Phyllis Ahlschwede

Phyllis Darlene Ahlschwede, 85, of Grand Island, former long-time York resident, died Sunday, Oct. 1, at Grand Island.

She was born Nov. 18, 1914, near Dorchester to Fred and Edna (Scott) Kleinholz. Phyllis was a 1931 graduate of Dorchester High School.

On Feb. 14, 1938, she was married to Clarence J. Ahlschwede at Dorchester. Phyllis was a cook at Willard School in York for 25 years. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of York, UMW, Nite Owls Extension Club and the Chat-N-Chew Club.

Survivors include her son, Earl (Virginia) Ahlschwede of Grand Island, and her daughter, Marlene (Paul) Schreiter of Holdrege. Also surviving are five grandchildren, Matthew Ahlschwede of Grand Island, John Ahlschwede of Omaha, James Ahlschwede of Lincoln, Scott Schreiter of Lincoln and Sarah Schreiter of Holdrege; and her sister, Fern Horan of Exeter.

Her parents; her husband, Clarence; and her brother, Frederick, preceded her in death.

Funeral services will be held at the Metz Chapel in York on Wednesday, Oct. 4, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Karen Kennerly officiating. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery at York. Visitation will begin Tuesday morning. Memorials are suggested to the First United Methodist Church in York or the Salvation Army. Metz Mortuary of York is in charge of arrangements.

Matilda Hiebner

Matilda E. Hiebner, 80, of Henderson died Sunday, Oct. 1, 2000, in Henderson.

She was born July 1, 1920, on a farm in York County near Henderson to David M. and Margaret (Huebert) Epp. She attended District #95 and graduated from Henderson High School in 1938.

On Aug. 25, 1940, she married George G. Hiebner at Henderson. The couple farmed in the Henderson area until retirement. She also worked as a kitchen aid at the Henderson Nursing Home for several years. She was a member of the Bethesda Mennonite Church in Henderson.

Survivors include her husband, George of Henderson; a son, LaRoy (Brenda) Hiebner of Henderson; a daughter, Roberta (Tim) Bergen of Aurora; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one brother, Elmer D. Epp of Henderson.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Donald E. Epp; and one sister, Margaret Ott.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 4, at the Bethesda Mennonite Church in Henderson. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Henderson Health Care or the Nebraska Children's Home Society. Metz Mortuary in Henderson is in charge of arrangements.

Frederick Lauerman

Frederick Joseph Lauerman, 79, of Stromsburg died Saturday, Sept. 30, 2000, at the Midwest Covenant Home in Stromsburg.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, Oct. 4, at the Stromsburg Baptist Church at 10 a.m., with the Rev. Duane Tweeten officiating. Visitation will be held Tuesday, Oct. 3, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Palmer Funeral Home in Stromsburg. Burial will be at the Stromsburg Cemetery.

Gayla Rae Taylor

Gayla Rae Taylor, 54, died Friday, Sept. 29, 2000, at her home in York.

She was born March 4, 1946, at Stromsburg to Calvin Morris and Nola Rae (Schoch) Gilmore. She attended and graduated from York Public Schools.

On June 6, 1964, she was married to Edwin Jack Taylor Sr. at York. Gayla was a member of the Nazarene Church of York. Music was an important part of her life. She sang in church choirs, York Mother Singers for many years, solos, small groups and with others entertained in area nursing homes.

Gayla is survived by her husband, Edwin Taylor Sr. of York; two daughters, Edwina Gay (Tom) Carr of York and Jackie Rae (Dean) Soltesz of Hebron; a son, Edwin Jack Taylor Jr. of York; four grandchildren, Bryan Ray, Dean Edward Jr., Desiree Elizabeth and John Robert Soltesz of Hebron. Also surviving are her mother, Nola Rae Gilmore of York and father and mother-in-law, Max and Dorothy Taylor of Geneva; aunts, uncles, a brother and sister-in-law; and nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were her father, Calvin Gilmore; an infant sister, Virginia Marie Gilmore; and her grandparents.

Funeral services will be held at the York Church of the Nazarene with the Rev. Will Hayworth officiating, on Tuesday, Oct. 3, at 1 p.m. Burial will be at the Greenwood Cemetery, York. Memorials may be directed to the Nazarene Church or to the family. Metz Mortuary of York is in charge of arrangements. Paid.

Marion Bussard

Fairmont resident, 87

Marion Bussard, 87, of Fairmont, former Lushton resident, died today, Thursday, Oct. 12, 2000, in Fairmont. Services are pending at Metz Mortuary in York.

Ester Dyer

Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif., resident, 98

Ester Mae Dyer, 98, of Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif., died Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2000, in California.

She was born Feb. 14, 1902, near Lanark, Ill., to Henry J. and Agnes M. (Milroy) Seng. She graduated from McCool High School in 1920 and attended York College for two years. She taught school in York County country schools and at McCool for six years. She then was a longtime X-ray technician, first working for the Bell Clinic and then for York General Hospital for 25 years before retiring in 1967.

She was a member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in McCool and the Quilting Bee, also at the church.

She is survived by one son, Denzel L. (Helen) Dyer of Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif., three grandsons, two great-granddaughters, cousins, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and one sister.

Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m., Friday, Oct. 20 at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in McCool with the Rev. Michelle Olson officiating. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery in York. Memorials may be directed to the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in McCool. Visitation begins after 5 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 18.

Metz Mortuary in York is in charge of arrangements.

Robert Siegel

Edmond, Okla., resident, 53

Robert Siegel, 53, of Edmond, Okla., died Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2000, at his home in Edmond.

He was born May 6, 1947, at Riverton to Louis and Alice (Hall) Siegel.

He married Patricia Chambers on April 17, 1970, in York. He was a maintenance supervisor at Wal-Mart in Edmond. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church in El Paso, Texas, and the York Elks Lodge #1024.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia, of Edmond; son, Joel (Dawn) Siegel of Yukon, Okla.; daughter, Kimberly Siegel of Edmond; brothers, Louis Siegel of Stapleton, and Ben Siegel of Las Vegas, Nev.; sisters, Rose Melvin of Chappell, Virginia Bohac of Kimball, and Anna Marie Mitchell of Omaha.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 14, at Metz Chapel in York. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery in York. Visitation will be Friday evening at Metz Mortuary, which is in charge of arrangements.

Maysel Jorgensen

Central City resident, 90

Maysel Jorgensen, 90, of Central City, formerly of Hampton and Aurora, died at Long Term Care in Central City on Monday, Oct. 16, 2000.

She was born on Jan. 11, 1910, in Hamilton County. She grew up and received her education in Aurora. As a young woman, she worked in homes for different families, including helping in the home of her sister-in-law, Hilda Wert.

She married Immanuel Jorgensen in 1929. They farmed near Hampton working side by side on the farm. They lived on the farm until their retirement in 1971 when they moved into Hampton. Immanuel died in 1988. She continued to live in Hampton until moving to Community Care in Aurora and then to Central City Care Center in 1996. She was a member of the United Lutheran Church in Hampton.

She is survived by one brother, Fred Fowler of Moxee City, Wash.; many nieces and nephews including Bonnie (Clarence) Blase of Hordville, Donna Isaacs of Baltimore, Md., Betty Peirce of Red Cloud, Melvin Larsen of Ames, Iowa, Eugene Larsen of Omaha, Norman Larsen and Keith Wert, both of York.

She was preceded in death by her husband and two sisters, Maxine and Viola.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Oct. 19, at 2 p.m. at the United Lutheran Church in Hampton with Pastor Shari Duminy officiating. Burial will be in the United Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation is Wednesday, Oct. 18, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the church.

Solt Funeral Home in Hampton is in charge of arrangements.

Dorothy Petersen

Geneva resident, 79

Dorothy T. Petersen, 79, of Geneva died Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2000.

She was born to Robert and Belle (Bakeman) Thomas on Feb. 27, 1921, at Geneva.

Survivors include her son, Richard Petersen of rural Grafton; daughter, Virginia (Tom) Watters of San Antonio, Texas; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services will be held Friday, Oct. 20, at 10:30 a.m., at the Congregational United Church of Christ in Geneva. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m., on Thursday, Oct. 19, at Farmer and Son Funeral Home in Geneva. Graveside services will be held at Geneva Public Cemetery in Geneva. The Rev. Jay Mitchell will officiate.

Leo Rau

Phoenix, Ariz., resident, 78

Leo George Rau was born July 17, 1922, in Utica. He was two years younger than his only sibling, William, who died at the age of 16.

Leo was a high school basketball star and also an accomplished clarinetist who could play by ear. After graduating from Utica High School in 1940, he attended Lincoln School of Commerce for one year after which he went to Long Beach, Calif. He worked in the postal department for the Douglas Aircraft Company at Long Beach until Dec. 11, 1942, when he was called to serve in the U.S. Army during World War II. In the Army, he was a troop mail carrier, often traveling to the European front in France and Germany.

After serving three years in the Army, Leo attended the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. He graduated in 1950 with a B.S. in business administration and was a lifelong "Big Red" Cornhusker fan. While at the University, he married Anne Marie Pavel of Staplehurst on Aug. 24, 1948. Together they had five children.

After a successful 12-year career as a buyer in the cosmetic department of the Gold's Company in Lincoln, Leo and his family moved to Phoenix, Ariz., in 1964, where he was a department manager for Revco drug store. His wife, Anne, died in 1968 after 20 years of marriage. Leo was an excellent and loving father, raising the five children by himself. Leo accepted a position with the City of Phoenix as a business license inspector, where he served for 15 years until his retirement in 1987.

Leo was an accomplished ballroom dancer and enjoyed traveling with his family and friends. Leo made numerous friends with whom he stayed close all of his life. His Catholic faith was of utmost importance to him and he regularly attended St. Jerome's Church in Phoenix.

As his health diminished from diabetes, Leo moved to the Beatitudes Nursing Home in Phoenix, where he resided for the past seven years. He stayed quite active in the numerous programs at the Beatitudes, especially balloon volleyball.

Leo is survived by his long-time special friend Shirley Buck; son Michael Rau; daughter and son-in-law Patricia and Doug Royse; daughter and son-in-law Deborah and Jerry Hermann; son David Rau; son Thomas Rau; grandchildren Robb Royse, Dan Rau, Ryan Royse, Andrew Rau, Peter Rau, Kyle Hermann, Victoria Rau, Neil Hermann, and Nicholas Rau; brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, cousins and friends.

Leo was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Elizabeth (Spohn) Rau, his brother William and wife Anne.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. with a rosary at 7 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 19, 2000, at Hansen Mortuary, 8314 N. 7th St., Phoenix, Ariz. Services will be at 10 a.m., Friday, Oct. 20, 2000, at St. Jerome's Catholic Church, 10815 N. 35th Ave., Phoenix, Ariz.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, Greater Phoenix Chapter, 1 E. Camelback Rd., Phoenix, Ariz. 85012.

R. Hugh Suddarth

Rising City resident, 61

R. Hugh Suddarth, 61, of Rising City died Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2000, at St. Joseph Hospital in Omaha.

He was born on May 15, 1939, in David City to Earnest and L. Pearl (Boyers) Suddarth. He graduated from Rising City High School in 1956.

On May 17, 1959, he was married to Marlene E. Ruth in Rising City where they lived his entire life. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1956 to 1962.

Suddarth was a farmer and worked as petroleum salesman for Farmers Co-op Business Association in Rising City. He was a member of the Composite Lodge No. 81, AF & AM; Scottish Rite, Order of Eastern Star; a former member of the Circle Mound Cemetery Board and the Shelby Legion Post No. 296.

Survivors include his wife, Marlene, of Rising City; sons, Nevin (Janene) Suddarth of Coralville, Iowa, Zachery (Lori) Suddarth and J. B. (Joan) Suddarth, all of York; and seven grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant brother.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Oct. 20, at 10 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Rising City with the Rev. Eugene Beye officiating. Burial will be in Circle Mound Cemetery, Rising City. A prayer services will be held Thursday, at 7 p.m. at Roberts Funeral Home in David City. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Thursday, at the funeral home. Memorials may be made in care of the family.
