Norval Weers

Cheyenne, Wyo., resident, 79

Norval W. Weers, 79, of Cheyenne, Wyo., died Thursday, Dec. 7, 2000, at the VA Medical Center in Denver, Colo.

He was born Oct. 6, 1921, in Haxtun, Colo., and had lived in Cheyenne for five years with prior residence in Bradshaw, for 23 years; at Berthoud, Colo., for 14 years; and Yoder, Wyo., from 1984 to 1995 when he moved to Cheyenne.

He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II. He was a fighter pilot with the 325th Fighter Group (Checkertails) in the European Theater. On his 37th mission, he was captured by the Nazis and spent the rest of the war in a Prisoner of War camp, Stalag Luft I.

In civilian life, he taught flying and was a crop duster for 15 years. When he moved to Colorado, he worked for Woodward Governor Company in Fort Collins, Colo., until he retired in 1984.

He was a member of First Christian Church, Masonic Lodge #29 in Torrington, Wyo., Ex-POW's Frontier Chapter, VFW, American Legion, and was past master of the Masonic Lodge in Hampton.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Weers of Cheyenne, whom he married Sept. 5, 1942, in York; four daughters, Nancy Jolley of Las Vegas, Nev., Karen MacShane of Chicago, Ill., Beth (Dale) Niemann of York, and Kathy (Gary) Dankroger of Firth; two brothers, Harold Weers of Longmont, Colo., and Ronald Weers of Menifee, Calif.; four sisters, Carol Wallace of Durant, Okla., Marian Lemmon and Nadine Hisam, both of Fort Collins, Colo., and Betty Eggleston of Rowlett, Texas; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Irene Weers, and three grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Dec. 12, at 1 p.m. at First Christian Church in Cheyenne with Dr. Murray Frick officiating. Memorials may be sent to the American Autoimmune Related Diseases Association, Inc., 22100 Gratiot Ave., East Detroit, Mich., 48021.

Services are under the direction of Wiederspahn-Radomsky Chapel of the Chimes in Cheyenne.

Barbara Mae Clark

Nevada resident, 61

Barbara Mae Clark, 61, of Las Vegas, Nev., died Sunday, Dec. 10, 2000, in Las Vegas.

She was born May 12, 1939, in Nebraska to Reuben and Erma (Murphy) Bailey.

She is survived by her husband, Charles, of Las Vegas; one son, Roger Clark of Junction City, Kan.; a daughter, Candace Hawkins of Henderson, Nev.; one brother, Darrell Bailey of McCool Junction, Neb.; sisters, Marilyn Reasland of Omaha and Linda (Jim) Dey of Gresham.

Funeral services will be on Saturday, Dec. 16, at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in York. Burial will be in the St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery. A rosary will be held on Friday at 7 p.m. at Metz Mortuary in York.

Gladys Broz

Fairmont resident, 90

Gladys Pauline Broz, 90, of Fairmont, formerly of McCool Jct., Neb., died Friday, Dec. 15, 2000 at Fairmont.

She was born Sept. 14, 1910 in Seward County, Neb., to Alfred and Maebelle (Moulton) Anderson and was a 1930 graduate of York High School. She was an avid gardener, loved animals and polka dancing. On June 10, 1942 she was married to Leonard Marc Broz in Muskegee, Okla.

Survivors include one daughter, Donna (Elden) Luethke of Fairmont; two grandchildren, Brad (Michele) Luethke and Brandon (Kristin) Luethke, all of Lincoln. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one son and one brother.

Services are 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Metz Chapel in York. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery in York. Memorials may be directed to the family. Visitation begins Sunday afternoon.

Metz Mortuary in York is in charge of arrangements.

Roger Wullenwaber

Ericson resident, 57

Roger Lee Wullenwaber, 57, died at his home in Ericson on Monday, Dec. 11, 2000.

He was born Aug. 21, 1943, to Otto Henry and Evelyn Pearl (Morris) Wullenwaber in Seward. Roger graduated from Utica High School in 1960.

On Nov. 9, 1963, Roger married Janet Elrod in Utica. Roger worked as vice-president for Hughes Brothers Inc. in Seward. In 1972 they bought a farm near Staplehurst. He continued to work for Hughes Brothers. In 1979 they moved into Staplehurst. Roger retired early in 1989 from Hughes Brothers. He continued to be self-employed, doing a variety of things. In 1996 they moved to the sandhills to make their home in Ericson. They owned the Sandhills Western Store and Ericson Cash Feed Service.

Roger was a charter member of the Jaycees in Utica where he helped with the rodeo. He was on the fire and rescue unit in Utica. He served on the school board at Our Redeemer Lutheran School and served as village clerk while living in Staplehurst.

He is survived by his wife, Janet Wullenwaber of Ericson; one son, Matt (Traci) Wullenwaber of Lincoln; one daughter, Michelle Leffers and friend Riley Renner of Ericson; three grandchildren; two brothers, Norman (Priscilla) Wullenwaber of Hollywood, Fla., and Gary Wullenwaber of Seward; two sisters, Janice (Ivan) Cradick of Utica and Connie (Bruce) Horn of York.

Roger was preceded in death by one brother, Leland, and his parents.

Memorial services were held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 14, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Burwell with the Rev. Allen Bergstrazer officiating. Memorials are suggested to the American Diabetes Association or the family. Hitchcock Funeral Home in Burwell is in charge of the arrangements.

Floyd King

York resident, 84

Floyd J. King, 84, of York, died Thursday, Dec. 14, 2000, at York.

He was born in Grafton on March 30, 1916, to Cleveland and Clara Belle (Swartz) King.

On Aug. 19, 1939, he was married to Mildred Thorne at York. He worked at Tom's Produce, York Public Schools, York State Bank, and after his retirement did part-time work at the 16th Street Car Wash. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Nazarene Church of York.

Survivors include his wife, Mildred, of York; one son, Douglas (Sheri) King of Lincoln; three daughters, Twila (Gary) Bell of Hugoton, Kan., Norma (Wilfred) Pohl of York and Marlene Woodard of Beatrice; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and six step-grandchildren. Also surviving are his sister, Carmen Lewis of Hastings; two brothers, Clifford (Ann) King of Fairfield, Calif., and Condon (Lois) King of Lincoln; and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents, two brothers and two sons-in-law.

Funeral services will be held Monday, Dec. 18, at 2 p.m., at the Nazarene Church at York with the Rev. Will Hayworth officiating. Burial will be at the Greenwood Cemetery at York. Visitation will begin at noon on Saturday, Dec. 16.

Memorials may be directed to the church or the family.

Margaret Hoover

York resident, 89

Margaret "LaDell" Hoover, age 89 years, of York, and formerly of Wellington, Kan., died on Friday evening, Dec. 15, 2000, at The Hearthstone Care Center in York.

LaDell was born on Dec. 23, 1910, at Pittsburg, Kan., to Thomas P. and Anna L. (Alterman) Griggs.

She was united in marriage to Robert K. Hoover on Sept. 10, 1930, at Kansas City, Kan. The couple lived in Coffeyville, Wichita, Liberal, Topeka, and Wellington, Kan., prior to moving to York in 1984.

LaDell was a longtime member of Faith Lutheran Church at York. She served as Sunday School teacher for many years and had been a longtime member of the Lutheran Women's Missionary League. She and her husband were honored with a card shower in September in observance of their 70th wedding anniversary.

Survivors include her husband, Robert K. Hoover of York; two daughters, Shirley (and her husband, Clarence) Knorr of York and Sharon L. (and her husband, Dean) Mallory of Rockvale, Colo.; one son, Madison F. "Max" (and his wife, Marcia) Hoover of York; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; two sisters: Audrey Humphrey of Lawrence, Kan., and Mary Elizabeth Riley of Kansas City, Kan.; one brother, Clyde (and his wife, Millie) Griggs of Kansas City, Kan.

LaDell was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas P. and Anna L. (Alterman) Griggs, and three brothers (Armand, Ivan, and Thomas Griggs).

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m., on Monday, Dec. 18, 2000, at Faith Lutheran Church in York with Pastor Arthur P. Schauer officiating. Interment was in Greenwood Cemetery at York. Visitation began at 1 p.m., on Sunday at the Lewis Funeral Chapel in York.

Memorials may be directed to the Alzheimer's Unit at The Hearthstone Care Center or Faith Lutheran Church. Lewis Funeral Chapel of York was in charge of arrangements.

Philip Sack

Denver, Colo., resident

Philip Ward Sack died at his home in Denver, Colo., on Nov. 30, 2000.

He grew up in Gresham and was the son of the late Andrew and Jean Sack.

Ward was a 50-year member of Friendship Lodge #185 AF&AM; and El Jebel Motorcycle Patrol of the Englewood Shrine Club.

Survivors are his wife Beverly; two children, Sherry (Mike) Weber of New York and Michael Sack of Pennsylvania; six grandchildren; sisters, Lynne (Roger) Weld of Lincoln, Sandra (Gordon) Metzger of Sonoma, Calif.; three stepchildren, 10 step-grandchildren; one step-great-grandchild; one uncle, Gerald (Janet) Burgess of Gresham; cousins, nieces and nephews.

Memorials may being sent to the Transportation Fund for Crippled Children at the Shrine Hospital.

Harvey Friesen

Henderson resident, 89

Harvey Friesen, 89, of Henderson died Sunday, Dec. 17, at Lincoln. He was born in York County on March 19, 1911, to George P. and Magaretha (Quiring) Friesen.

On Nov. 27, 1940, he was married to Martha M. Mierau at Henderson and they lived and farmed near Henderson for many years. Harvey was a member of Bethesda Mennonite Church.

Survivors include his wife, Martha Friesen of Henderson; two sons, Ivan (Rachel) Friesen of Freeman, S.D., and Erwin (Marcia) Friesen of Nebraska City; daughter, Eulene Fern (Barry) Hieb of Tucson, Ariz.; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Also surviving are his sister, Justina (Wilbur) Norquest of Henderson; sisters-in-law, Geraldine Friesen of Henderson and Edna Friesen of York. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Henry and Alden.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the Bethesda Mennonite Church at Henderson with the Rev. Weldon Martens officiating. Burial will be at the Bethesda Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Mennonite Disaster Service.

Berdean Neujahr

Seward resident, 76

Berdean A. Neujahr, 76, of Seward died Dec. 16, 2000.

She was born on Aug. 6, 1924, to Herman A. and Bertha A. (Bluhm) Neujahr. She was a member of Friedens United Church of Christ in Seward.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Larene (Walter) Nordmeyer.

She is survived by her sister, Edna (Walter) Niemann of Staplehurst; sister-in-law, Delores Nordmeyer of York; two nephews, two nieces and cousins.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2000, at 2 p.m. at Friedens United Church of Christ in Seward with the Rev. Alvin Smith officiating. Visitation will be today, Monday, Dec. 18, from 3 to 8:30 p.m. and Tuesday, Dec. 19, from 9 to 11 a.m. at Wood-Zabka Funeral Home in Seward. There will also be visitation for one hour prior to services at the church. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Seward.

Memorials can be sent to Friedens United Church of Christ or the donor's choice. Wood-Zabka Funeral Home of Seward is in charge of arrangements.
