Leonard Campion

Friend resident, 81

Leonard Campion, 81, of Friend, formerly of Lincoln, died Sunday, Dec. 17, 2000.

He was born in York to William M. and Grace (Casebeer) Campion.

He was employed by the Veterans Administration Hospital in Lincoln. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Army. He was a member of the American Legion Post #7, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and was a Boy Scout leader.

He is survived by three sons, Greg Hitz of Pinebluff, Ark., Rick Campion of Beatrice, Mike Campion of Lincoln; three daughters, Dorothy Bolocao of Burchard, Sherry Jourdon of Friend, and Lois Kubicka of Lincoln; 22 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Otho; twin sister, Lenor; daughter, Donnie Grady; grandson, Greggie Hitz; and great-granddaughter, Gabriel McCullough.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Friday, Dec. 22, at Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home in Lincoln. Interment will be at Lincoln Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from noon on Wednesday until services at the funeral home.

Robert Salyard, Sr.

Pennsylvania resident, 74

York native Robert R. Salyard, Sr., 74, of Haverford, Penn., died in New York City, N.Y., on Dec. 14, 2000.

Salyard was born at home in York to Thelma (Roberts) and Floyd Salyard. He graduated as valedictorian from York High School in 1944. He joined the Navy V-12 program and served as battalion commander of the ROTC unit at Northwestern University. He was commissioned upon graduation and served as communications officer on two U.S. destroyers assigned to mine sweeping off the coast of Italy, the former Yugoslavia, and Greece. Salyard received the Navy Cross for rescuing a drowning sailor off the coast of Patras, Greece.

Salyard earned an MBA from Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration. During his business career of over 50 years, he served as president and Chief Executive Officer of five industrial companies: American Cement Corporation, AVC, Financial Corporation of Arizona, Builders Design Inc., and Sonobod Ultrasonics. In 1989, Salyard founded Salyard Management Company, which provided management and operations consulting services to company officers and boards of directors nationwide. He also served as a director of Spencer Trask Securities and Spencer Trask Holdings, Inc., of New York, N.Y.

He is survived by his wife, Ann Barriger Salyard of Haverford; three daughters, Lann Salyard Woehrle of Haverford, Lisa Salyard Brussell of Boulder, Colo., Molly Roberts Salyard of Haverford; a son, Robert Russell Salyard, Jr., of Woodland, Calif.; and two grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Shirley (Salyard) Barrett.

Services will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 20, at 10 a.m., at St. John Vianney Church in Gladwyne, Penn. A one-hour viewing will precede the mass. Following the service, burial will take place at Calvary Cemetery, Conshohocken, Penn.

Wayne Schmid

Bellwood resident, 81

Wayne Schmid, 81, of Bellwood died Sunday, Dec. 17, 2000, at Columbus Manor in Columbus.

He was born on Oct. 2, 1919, in Butler County to Rudolph and Agnes (Schrier) Schmid. He graduated from Kramer High School in Columbus in 1937.

He was married to Mary Rose Kosch on Sept. 21, 1943, in Shelby. He farmed all his life in Butler County. He served on District #13 rural Butler County School Board, the Natural Resource District Board-Lower Platte North, the Alexis Township Board, Bellwood Rural Fire Department Board, and the Bellwood Co-op Board.

Survivors include his wife of Bellwood; three sons, Kenneth (Gayla) Schmid of Bellwood, Thomas (Aloha) Schmid of Waco, and Jack (Susan) Schmid of Bellwood; three daughters, Marjorie (Michael) Chatterson of Alexandria, Ind., Diane Ward of Shelby, and Mary Kay (Mark) Hegl of Columbus; two brothers, Robert (Viola) Schmid and Bernard (Marcella) Schmid, both of Bellwood; 21 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a son-in-law, Bill Ward.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Dec. 20, at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Bellwood with Father Jeremy Hazuka presiding. Burial will be at St. Peter and Mary's Presentation Cemetery in Bellwood. Visitation will be on Tuesday, Nov. 19, from 3-5 p.m. at McKown Funeral Home in Columbus and after 6:30 p.m., in the church. A vigil will be held Tuesday, 7:30 p.m., at the church. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until the service time at the church.

Memorials can be sent to the donor's choice.

Viola Janssen

Viola E. I. Janssen, 91, of Utica, widow of Walter Janssen, died Dec. 20, 2000, in Seward. She was born Dec. 11, 1909, in Waco, daughter of Fritz and Rosina (Keehn) Volzke.

Survivors include her son, Richard Janssen of Chester, Ill., her daughters, Darlene Patterson/McBride and husband Cliff of Lincoln and Ruth Walsh and husband Billy of Golden Valley, Ariz.; a sister-in-law, Lillie Volzke of Broken Bow; seven grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; brothers, John, Alfred, Henry, Emil, and Martin Volzke; sisters, Wilhelmina Hoffman, Mary Scheele, Laura LIttler; great-grandchild, Benjamin Patterson; son-in-law, Lonnie Patterson.

Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 23, 2000, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Utica with the Rev. Robert Gadeken officiating.. Burial will be in Utica Cemetery. Visitation will be held Friday, Dec. 22 from 1:30 to 9 p.m. Memorials, in lieu of flowers, may be sent to the Lutheran Hour Ministry or Lutheran Women's Missionary League. Volzke Mortuary of Seward is in charge of arrangements.

Linus "Pat" O'Brien

Friend resident, 83

Linus R. "Pat" O'Brien, 83, of Friend died Monday, Dec. 18, 2000, at the Friend Manor in Friend. He was born to Patrick F. and Mary M. (Regan) O'Brien on Aug. 24, 1917, their second child, in rural Fillmore County.

As a young boy he attended District #69 Country School, St. Joseph Catholic School and later Friend Public High School. He was married to Pauline E. Britten on May 24, 1955, in Lincoln. To this union a son and daughter were born.

Together they made their home on a farm west of Friend in Fillmore County. He enjoyed his many years on the farm, continuing his work on the farm until 1992 when his health began to fail. The last years of his life have been spent at the Friend Terrace and in the Friend Manor. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Friend.

He is survived by his son, Patrick (Linda) O'Brien of Bradshaw; his daughter, Linda (Dave) Long of Norton, Kan.; four grandchildren; his sister, Margaret Ferguson of Friend; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Pauline, in 1994.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 22, 2000, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Friend with Father David F. Bourek officiating. Interment will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, rural Friend. A Rosary will be held on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at Lauber-Moore Funeral Home Chapel in Friend. Visitation is 1 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, 9-9 on Thursday at Lauber-Moore Funeral Home in Friend and one hour before services at the church on Friday. Memorials can be sent to St. Joseph Catholic Church, Friend.

Lauber-Moore Funeral Home in Friend is in charge of arrangements.

Amber Weitzel

Grand Island resident, 18

Amber Marie Weitzel, 18, of 4020 Sacramento, Grand Island, died Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2000, as a result of an auto accident near Kearney.

She was born on Sept. 4, 1982, in Fremont, Calif., to Lyle and Jackie (Bixenmann) Weitzel. She attended Newell Grade School, Walnut Middle School, and graduated from Northwest High School in May of 2000. While at Northwest, she was a member of the Northwest Vikettes for four years, and sang with the A Capella Singing Group that performed in New York.

She was currently a student at the University of Nebraska in Kearney. She was a member of the Alpha Pi Sorority, and a member of the UNK Dance Squad. She also worked part-time at Trade Home Shoes in Kearney.

Survivors include her mother and step-father, Jackie and Dr. John Bartu of Grand Island; her father, Lyle Weitzel of Grand Island; two sisters, Caitlin Weitzel, and Taylor Bartu of Grand Island; one brother, Bryce Bartu of Grand Island; grandparents, Judy and Lyle Tibbs of Grand Island, Bill and Lucy Bixenmann of Dell Rapids, S.D., Bryce and Phyllis Bartu of Seward; maternal great-grandparents, Bill and Lee Unzicker of Grand Island; maternal great-grandfather, Henry Wiese of Grand Island, as well as many cousins, aunts and uncles.

Funeral services will be on Saturday, Dec. 23, at 10 a.m., at the United Congregational Church in Grand Island with the Rev. Lonnie Logan officiating. Burial will be at the Grand Island City Cemetery. Visitation will be on Friday, Dec. 22, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to the A Capella Choir at Northwest High School. Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Dr. A. G. Zuspan

Lincoln resident, 93

Dr. A. G. Zuspan, 93, formerly of Aurora, died Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2000, in Lincoln. He was born on Dec. 12, 1907, to Wick and Rosa Bell (Allen) Zuspan in LaBell, Mo.

He grew up in Missouri. A.G. graduated from Kirksville Medical School, Culver-Stockton College and the University of Missouri at Columbia. His first job was in Tennessee for one year before he moved to Aurora.

A. G. was married to Helen Van Berg on June 14, 1938, in Canton, Mo. He was a family osteopath doctor for 55 years in Aurora before he retired in 1992. His wife died on Jan. 1, 1994. He lived in Lincoln following his retirement.

Dr. Zuspan was a member of the First Christian Church in Aurora, past member of the Aurora School Board and Aurora Planning Commission. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Tehama Shrine and Scottish Rite Valley, all of Hastings. Dr. Zuspan was also a member of the Nebraska Osteopathic Association. His parents, wife and brother, Farris Zuspan, preceded him in death.

He is survived by his son, Bill (Kathy) Zuspan of Lincoln; two grandchildren; brother, Newell Zuspan, 100, of Omaha and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Dec. 23, at 10:30 a.m. at First Christian Church in Aurora. Pastors Glenn R. Palmberg and Mary McQueen will officiate. Interment will be at the Aurora Cemetery. Visitation hours will be from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Higby Mortuary in Aurora. Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church.

Raymond L. Senff

York resident, 76
Raymond L. Senff, age 76, of York, died Wednesday, August 4, 2004 at York. He was born August 16, 1927 in York County to Fredrich and Myrtle (Nelson) Senff. A 1944 graduate of Bradshaw High School he enjoyed fishing and was a member of the York V.F.W. Raymond was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served during the Korean War. On March 23, 1951, he was married to Frances Jean Puterbaugh at York. They lived and farmed in York County until they retired to York.

Survivors include his wife Frances Jean of York; daughter Peggy (Mike) Hemmer of Ankeny, IA; three sons, Larry (Barb) Senff, Jim (Marianne) Senff and Kevin (Marcy) Senff all of York. He has ten grandchildren, three step grandchildren and four step great-grandchildren. Also surviving are his brother Garland (Helen) Senff of Bradshaw and sisters Darlene Olson of Lincoln and Donna Abel of Denver, CO. Preceding him in death were his parents, two brothers and two sisters.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday at the Metz Chapel in York at 1:30 p.m. Burial with military graveside services will be at the Council Cemetery west of York. Memorials may be directed to the Cancer fund or to the donor's choice. Visitation begins after 5:00 p.m., Thursday. Condolences may be emailed to metz@metzmortuary.com.

Corinne N. Rutledge

Lincoln resident, 23

Corinne Nichole Rutledge, 23, of Lincoln, died Sept. 2, 2003.
She was born June 23, 1980, to James Rutledge and Jolene (Matthes) Seachord in Seward.

She was a member of the St. John Lutheran Church in Seward, a 1998 graduate of Seward High School, a June 2003 graduate of the Culinary Arts Program at Southeast Community College, a chef at Chili's Restaurant and a physical fitness enthusiast.

Survivors include her mother, Jolene Seachord of Lincoln; father and step-mother, James and Geri Rutledge of Waco; brothers, Dustin Rutledge of Lincoln, Andy Seachord of Lincoln, Marshal Rutledge of Waco; sister, Alicia Seachord of Lincoln; grandparents, Ross and Artie Rutledge of Utica; best friend, Ben Nathan of Lincoln; aunts and uncles, Leann and Douglas Suellwold of Garland, Elaine and Harold Petersen of Garland, Matt and Regina Rutledge of Omaha; cousins and numerous friends.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Lester and Lola Matthes.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Sept. 5, at 10 a.m., at the Messiah Lutheran Church (1800 S. 84th St., Lincoln, NE 68506). Pastor Luther C. Biggs will officiate. Visitation will be Thursday from 7-9 p.m., with the family present. Interment will be at Lincoln Memorial Park.

Memorials may be sent to the Corinne Rutledge Scholarship Fund - Culinary Arts Program at Southeast Community College or the family's choice.

Pallbearers will be Jerome Walker, Scott West, Doug Pollak, Rafael Ortiz, Dan Wissink, Clint Rhodes, Danny Bye and Mike Will.

Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

William 'Bill' Frei

Hastings resident, 50

William H. "Bill" Frei, 50, of Hastings died Sunday, Dec. 10, 2000, in Osage Beach, Mo.

He was born July 9, 1950, to Robert H. and Betty (Laird) Frei in Yankton, S.D. He graduated in 1968 from Wagner Community High School in Wagner, S.D. He then graduated in 1972 from the University of South Dakota at Vermillion with a bachelor's degree in business and economics.

He moved from Vermillion to Hastings in 1972 where he began his career with Laird Motors. On Nov. 28, 1992, he married Barbara D. Bramblett. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Lochland Country Club, Mid-West Lodge No. 317 A.F. and A.M., Hastings Scottish Rite Bodies, Tehama Shrine Temple and Beta Theta Pi fraternity. He was a past member of the Regional Ford Dealer Advertising Board. He also served as past president of Sunrise Rotary Club and past ambassador of the Hastings Area Chamber of Commerce.

Survivors are his wife; one son, Nick of Brookings, S.D.; two daughters, Cari Frei of Panama City Beach, Fla., and Molly Frei of Hastings; his parents of Wagner; two sisters, Barb Hrdlicka of York and Bonnie Birger of Sioux Falls, S.D.; and one brother, Robert L. of Wagner.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church in Hastings with the Rev. Earl Higgins and the Rev. Dr. Carl Utley officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. Visitation is 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. with family present from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings and one hour prior to services Friday at the church.

Memorials may be given to the Hastings Community Foundation/Fire Department equipment.
