Barton L. Kline II, 77

(Aug. 27) LEXINGTON - Barton L. Kline II, 77, former Alliance resident, died Thursday, Aug. 22, 2001, at his home in Lexington, Neb. He was born Sept. 3, 1923, at Alliance. His parents were Barton and Beth D. (Eaton) Kline.

He attended school at Bridgeport through the eighth grade, and then graduated from high school at Gothenburg in 1941. He then attended Iowa State University. He served in the U.S. Army 1943-45. He married Marian Nisley on Aug. 15, 1943, at Gothenburg. He graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1950 with a degree in Education. He taught and coached at Holdrege for two years, and then the family moved to Lexington where he farmed and taught Earth Science at the junior high school until his retirement in 1987. He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Lexington, Rotary, "Three Coin Club," Dawson County Historical Society and Lexington Community Concert Association. He enjoyed music, Husker football, gardening and Eider hostels. He is survived by wife, Marian Kline of the home in Lexington; four sons, Kurt Kline of Lexington; Todd Kline of Hastings; Bart Kline III of Boise, Idaho, and Scott Kline of Salt Lake City; two daughters, Christin Roffers of Waverly and Gretchen Bricker of Colorado Springs; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and two step-grandchildren.

Mr. Kline's Celebration of Life was at 11 a.m. today, Aug. 27, at the United Methodist Church in Lexington, with Reverend Todd Karges officiating. Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery at Lexington. Memorials may be made to the donor's choice. Reynolds-Love Funeral Home of Lexington was in charge of arrangements.

Julia Colerick, 89

(Aug. 27) ALLIANCE - Julia Colerick, 89, died Saturday, Aug. 25, 2001, at Good Samaritan Health Care Center. She was born Feb. 29, 1912, at the homestead in Garden County, Nebraska to Tom and Nellie (Zauler) Patton.

She married Albert Colerick on May 6, 1934, in Antioch. She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Tom and JoAnn Colerick of Pinedale, Wyo., Harold and Insun Colerick of Alliance, daughters and sons-in-law, Kathy and Roger Yerdon of Alliance, and Margaret and Gene Lienemann of Sidney, Neb., brother Charles Patton of Sheridan, Wyo., sisters, Leota Dempsey of Townsend, Mont., Helen Young and Mary Hooper of Alliance, eight grandchildren, four great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, infant son and two brothers.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2001, at 2 p.m. at the Alliance Christian Church with Darrell Keith officiating. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery. Memorials may be given to Good Samaritan Health Care Center, Prairie Haven Hospice, Alliance Christian Church or to a charity of the donor's choice. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Norman J. Laursen, 82

(Aug. 27) SCOTTSBLUFF - MGYSGT Norman J. Laursen USMC RET, 82, of Scottsbluff, died Friday, Aug. 24, 2001, at his home at Wel-Life in Scottsbluff. A Mass of Christian burial will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Christ the King Catholic Church in Gering,with Fr. Gerald Harr officiating. Burial will be in the Hemingford Cemetery in Hemingford.

A Prayer Vigil will be held at 7 p.m. today at Dugan-Kramer Funeral Chapel. A memorial has been established to Nebraska Boy's Ranch or to Wel-Life assisted living, his home since 1999. Friends may call at Dugan-Kramer Funeral Chapel from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. today. The family will be present from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m. today. Norman was born Sept. 10, 1918, in Box Butte County on the Laursen family farm, to Marius and Martha (Petersen) Laursen. He received his education at District No. 79 in Box Butte County. He lived and worked on the Laursen family farm until he moved to Denver, Co where he lived until he enlisted in the USMC on Dec. 27, 1939. Within days of the attack on Pearl Harbor he was taken Prisoner Of War as one of the defenders of Wake Island. He was liberated on Sept. 14, 1945. He also served in Korea and Vietnam before retiring as Master Gunnery Sergeant of the United States Marine Corps on March 20, 1970 at Marine Headquarters at Washington DC. He resided in Scottsbluff and Hemingford, spending his last few years in Scottsbluff.

He was an avid ham radio operator and gardener. He is survived by his daughter Lynesa Laursen Ayers of New Bern, N.C.; Son GYSGT John Stanley Laursen, USMC, RET of Hubert, N.C.; one granddaughter; and one great granddaughter: He also is survived by brothers: Sherman Laursen of Alliance and Milford Laursen of Lakewood, Colo., and sisters: Alice Lysek of Gulf Breeze, Fla., and Marion Lysek of Thornton, Colo.

Elzetta M. Lucas, 82

(Aug. 27) BRIGHTON, Colo. - Elzetta M. Lucas, 82, died Friday, Aug. 17, 2001, at Brighton, Colo. Her parents were Elgetta and Arthur Kingry. She was married to Jay A. Lucas on July 5, 1941. She is survived by her daughters, Diane Prelle of Alliance and Susan Aden of Brighton, Colo.; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Lucas's funeral was Tuesday, Aug. 21, at Brighton, Colo.

Thomas Nathan Olson

(Aug. 27) PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Thomas Nathan Olson died Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2001, at Pittsburgh, Pa. His parents were Randall Lee and Dr. Kathryn Sylvine (Wildy) Olson. He is survived by his parents; grandparents Duane and Theresa Wildy of Alliance, and Alice Olson of Omaha; and great-grandmother Rose Dyke of Albany, N.Y.

Mr. Olson's graveside funeral was Friday, Aug. 24, at Homewood Cemetery in Pittsburgh. H. Samson, Inc., of Pittsburgh was in charge of arrangements.

Alexander Steffen, 87

(Aug. 27) ALLIANCE - Alexander Steffen died Sunday, Aug. 26, 2001, at Highland Park Care Center. He was 87. He was born Jan. 3, 1914, at Milwaukee, Wis., to Conrad and Mollie (Knaub) Steffen.

He married Eva Romick Dec. 14, 1941, at Kimball, Neb He was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church. He is survived by his wife Eva Steffen of Alliance; daughter and son-in-law, Sandra S. and Steve Waldron of Alliance; son, Larry A. Steffen of Bayard; sisters, Martha Steffen of Bayard and Anne Farrow of Almont, Mich.; half-brothers, Robert Heimbuck of Yuma, Ariz.; Alex Heimbuck of Tampa, Fla.; half-sister, Lydia Meter of Port Huron, Mich.; step-sisters, Kate Schmoll and Liz Miller of Bayard; step-brother, Hank Heimbuck of Port Huron, Mich.; grandchildren, Randy Waldron of Scottsbluff, Rusty and Natalie Waldron of Alliance, Libbie and Mike Puncochar of Hay Springs, Lance and Kara Steffen and LaRae and Mike Flood, all of Kearney; great-grandchildren, Chris, Jerrod, and Zachary Kalub, and Joshua Puncochar, all of Hay Springs, Soephia Steffen of Kearney, and Syndie Waldron of Alliance.

Graveside services will be Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2001, at 2 p.m. at the Oregon Trail Cemetery at Bridgeport. Reverend Richard Mueller officiating. Memorials may be given to the Immanuel Lutheran Church or to Prairie Haven Hospice. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Richard D. Hunter, 82

(Aug. 27) HEMINGFORD - Richard D. Hunter died Sunday, Aug. 25, 2002, at Highland Park Care Center in Alliance. He was born Aug. 11, 1920, to Robert and Zillah (Stewart) Hunter on the family ranch in Dawes County northwest of Hemingford.

He graduated from Hemingford High School in 1939. He served in the Marine Corp in the south Pacific for three years. On Oct. 31, 1944, he married Dorothy K. Breckner. After his military service he returned to the ranch and ranched his entire life on the place he was born. He was a member of St. Bridget Catholic Church, V.F.W. and the Bill Dowling American Legion Post No. 12 of Chadron. His survivors are his wife Dorothy, sons, Robert Hunter of Alliance, Gary and wife Sandy Hunter, Donald and wife Sherry Hunter and David Hunter all of Hemingford, daughters Susan and husband Steve Reams of Aurora, Colo., and Ann and husband Art Smith of Phoenix, Ariz., sister Margaret and husband Richard Householder of Alliance, brother Jack Hunter of Alliance, grandchildren Katie Herhalt, Kerry Herhalt, Ryan and Debbie Hunter, Shawn Hunter, Becky Hunter, Scott Hunter and Hunter Smith. His parents and three brothers in their youth preceded him in death.

Memorial services will be Wednesday, Aug. 28, at 10 a.m. at St. Bridget Catholic Church in Hemingford. Father Bryan Ernest will officiate. Inurnment will be in the Hemingford Cemetery. A rosary service will be Tuesday, Aug. 27 at 7 p.m. at St. Bridget Church. The family prefers memorials be given to the Hemingford Volunteer Firefighters Association, Prairie Haven Hospice or to a charity of the donor's choice. Linda Lulow, 55

(Aug. 27) TORRINGTON, Wyo. - Linda Lulow, 55, died Sunday, Aug. 25, 2002, at Torrington Community Hospital She was born Aug. 31, 1946, at Clarinda, Iowa. Her parents were Louis and Zona (McCormick) McGinnis.

The family moved to Alliance in 1959, and she attended St. Agnes Academy, graduating in 1964. She then attended Cosmetology school at Grand Island for two years. She was married to Michael Lulow on Aug. 29, 1966, at Alliance. In 1970, the couple moved to Torrington, Wyo. In 1976, she began work as a teacher's aide in the Goshen County School District. She is survived by her husband, Michael Lulow of Torrington; daughter Keri Lulow of Torrington; son Corey Lulow of Torrington; and three grandchildren. She also is survived by her sister, Theresa Wolski of Yoder, Wyo.; and three brothers, Mike McGinnis of Alliance, Jim McGinnis of Longmont, Colo., and Pat McGinnis of Hurst, Texas.

Mrs. Lulow's funeral will be at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 28, at St. Rose Catholic Church in Torrington, with The Reverend Father Kevin Koch officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. today at Colyer Funeral Home in Torrington, and 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Wednesday at the church. Memorials may be made to the Torrington Community Hospital Foundation. Colyer Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

William "Bill" Trabert, 78

(Aug. 27) CHADRON - William "Bill" Trabert, 78, died Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2002, at Alliance. He was born Sept. 24, 1923, in Alliance. His parents were Herman and Martha (Hickerson) Trabert.

Shortly after graduating from Alliance High School, he began working in the meat department for Safeway. He married Thera Blackmore on Sept. 2, 1946. Mrs. Trabert preceded him in death. Several years after marrying, he opened his own meat market in Chadron, and then "Herman's" restaurant and lounge. He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church and the Elks Club in Chadron. He is survived by three daughters, Janet Castle of Alliance, Diane Wieting of York and Mary Reinsbach of Parker, Colo.; one son, David Trabert of Lima, Peru; and nine grandchildren.

Mr. Trabert's funeral was Saturday, Aug. 24, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Chadron, with Father Ed Courtney officiating. Memorials may be made to Prairie Pines Assisted Living in Chadron. Chamberlain Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.

Gary Heyer Smith, 46

(August 28) GORDON - Gary Heyer Smith, 46, formerly of Gordon, died Thursday, Aug. 24, at Knoxville, Tenn. He was born Sep. 8, 1953, at Ogallala. His parents were George and Margery (Heyer) Smith. He married Cindy Ruffles on Nov. 6, 19993, at Knoxville, Tenn. He was a pilot for American International Air Cargo, and most recently flew for Polar Air Cargo. He was a U.S. Military veteran, and served during the Vietnam and Gulf Wars. He is survived by his wife, Cindy, of the home in Knoxville; his parents, George and Margery Smith of Gordon; his son, Chad Smith of Bartlesville, Okla; his daughter, Candace Dempsey of Bartlesville, Okla; and four grandchildren. He also is survived by his brother, George E. Smith of Ogden, Utah; and his sister, Lila Lieurance of Apple Valley, Minn. Mr. Smith funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 29, at he First Presbyterian Church in Gordon, with Rev. Vonne Blessman Anderson officiating. Burial will be in Gordon Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Gordon. Cicmanec-Pier Funeral Service of Gordon is in charge of arrangements.

Wilmer Russell, 87

(August 28) GORDON - Wilmer Russell, 87, died Friday, Aug. 25, at his rural home in Gordon. He was born Feb. 21, 1913, at Maywood. His parents were Harvey and Mary (Davis) Russell. He married Ruth A. Haller on Feb. 3, 1940, at Gordon. Mrs. Russell did July 21, 2000. He was a lifetime rancher south of Gordon. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. He is survived by three daughters, Mary Esther Wilson of Hot Springs, Dorothy Smith of Plattsmouth and Marilyn McGlathery of Spokane, Wash.; two sons, Robert Russell of Gordon and Ted Russell of Owasso, Okla.; 12 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He also is survived by his sister, Dessie Oliver of Portland, Ore. Mr. Russell's funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 30, at the First Presbyterian Church in Gordon, with The Rev. Vonnie Blessman Anderson officiating. Burial will be in Gordon Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Gordon, or the donor's choice. Margaret S. Prelle, 72

(August 28) ALLIANCE - Margaret Sarah (Ace) Prelle, 72, died Saturday, Aug. 26, at her home in Alliance. She was born Sep. 20, 1927, at Alliance. Her parents were Alvah W. and Mildred A. (Phillips) Muzzey. She was married to Joseph A. Prelle on Nov. 19, 1951, at Chadron. Mr. Prelle preceded her in death. She lived in Alliance except for the period from 1954 to 1966 when she lived in Baldwin Park, Calif., where she belonged to the Trinity Lutheran Church in Covina, Calif. After returning to Alliance, she worked for Dayco. After retiring she cared for many children in her home who knew her as Grandma Peg. She is survived by her three daughters, Charlene Fritchie of Lincoln, Pearl Bryson of Ft. Walton Beach, Fla., and Carol Dufek of Alliance; her son Terry Prelle of Sterling, Colo.; 11 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. She also is survived by two sisters. Nellie Athey of Alliance and Ethel Long of Yoder, Wyo.; and three brothers, Leroy Muzzey of Lexington, Leo Muzzey of Minatare, and Jesse Athey of Scottsbluff. Mrs. Prelle's funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 29, at the Bates-Gould Chapel in Alliance, with Pastor Hod Boltjes officiating. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery. Memorials may be made in care of the family at 724 Emerson Ave., Alliance, NE 69301. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Dortheia L. Dooley, 80

(Aug. 28) TORRINGTON, Wyo. - Dortheia L. Dooley, 80, died Sunday, Aug. 26, 2001, at Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff. She was born June 10, 1921, at Evansville, Ind. Her parents were Sheldon and Fern (McCoy) Mosier.

She graduated from Denver North High School in 1938. She was married to James Dooley on Sept. 20, 1940, at Denver. Mr. Dooley preceded her in death in 1971. The couple moved to Boulder, Colo., in 1946; Longmont, Colo., in 1950; Omaha in 1957; and Idaho Springs, Colo., in 1966. In 1968, they moved to Torrington where she was employed by Eastern Wyoming College as a dorm mother, cook and cafeteria cashier. She retired in 1998. She was a member of the First Wyoming United Presbyterian Church of Torrington; and enjoyed bowling, fishing, ceramics, roses and raising livestock. She is survived by her son Mike Dooley of Wheatland, Wyo.; two daughters, Lynda Young of Bingham and Lynn Fitzgerald of Guernsey, Wyo.; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Dooley's funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 30, at Colyer Funeral Home of Torrington, with Reverend Peggy Brown officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery in Torrington. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m. Wednesday and 9 a.m. until 1 p.m., Thursday at Colyer Funeral Home.

Doris Irene Nagelschneider, 84

(Aug. 28) HEMINGFORD - Doris Irene Nagelschneider, 84, died Sunday, Aug. 26, 2001, at Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff. She was born June 24, 1917, in Kansas City, Mo., to Ray P. and Florence (Shaeffer) McConnell.

She married Roy Nagelschneider on Nov. 9, 1938, in Sterling, Colo. He preceded her in death. Her survivors are her sons Larry and wife Rosemary Nagelschneider of Pueblo, Colo.; Roger and wife Pauline Nagelschneider of Tulsa, Okla.; sister-in-law, Geneice Rosenberger of Hemingford; sister Jean Hornback of Springfield, Mo.; four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be Thursday, Aug. 30, at 10 a.m. at the Congregational Church in Hemingford. The Reverend Walter Cline will officiate. Burial will be in the Hemingford Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the church or to the Hemingford Community Care Center. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Fredrick R. Albert, 76

(Aug. 28) RAMONA, Calif. - Fredrick R. Albert, 76, died Sunday, June 30, 2002, at Ramona, Calif. He was born Aug. 30, 1925, at Lincoln, Neb. Mr. Albert's memorial service for family and friends will be at 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 31 at Alliance City Cemetery, with Father Paul Mottl officiating. The American Veterans Color Guard, organized by Howard Watson, will present a salute.

Rudy Stanko Sr., 84

(Aug. 29) GORDON - Rudy Stanko Sr., 84, died Monday, Aug. 26, 2002, at his home in Gordon. He was born June 4, 1918, at Kleenburn, Wyo.

He learned the meat packing business from his father. He was an All-State football tackle for the Sheridan High Broncs While serving in the U.S. US Navy during World War II, he became a well know amateur heavyweight boxer, beating many notable fighters, including future world heavyweight champion Rocky Marciano. He won the heavyweight National AAU title in 1944, and had over a 100 amateur fights without a loss. He married Elizabeth "Chicky" Stanko were married in 1946. In 1952, he founded the Rocky Mountain Packing Company in Casper, Wyo. In 1971, he founded Nebraska Beef Packers in Gordon. During the 1990s and to present date, he has been involved in successful alfalfa farming operation. He was a member of the Elks club in Casper, Wyo., Veterans of Foreign Wars, Knights of Columbus, and American Legion in Gordon. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth; sons Rudy Stanko Jr. of Gordon and Robert Stanko of Fort Collins, Colo; and six grandchildren. He also is survived by his sister, Helen Burtus of Sheridan, Wyo., and brother Henry of Casper, Wyo.

Mr. Stanko's funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, August 31, at St. Leo's Catholic Church in Gordon. Burial will be in the Sheridan, Wyo., Community Cemetery. An informal wake will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 30, at the church in Gordon.

Bertha M. West, 89

(Aug. 29) ALLIANCE - Bertha M. West, 89, died Monday, Aug. 25, 2003, at the Good Samaritan Health Care Center. She was born Nov. 19, 1913, at Kimball, to Fritz and Matilda (Laymen) Retke.

She is survived by her children, Gary West and his wife Barb of Hastings, Minn., Raymond West of Alliance, Ronald West and his wife Dawn of Alliance, Dennis West of Ravenna, and Carol Gasseling and her husband Butch of Lincoln; 16 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren. She also is survived by two brothers, and two sisters. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Harry D. West, and two infant sons.

Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sep. 3, at the Bates-Gould Chapel, with Rev. Jerry Mercer officiating. Inurnment will be in the Alliance Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Good Samaritan Health Care Center. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Charles R. Smith, 92

Ella L. Smith, 86

(Aug. 29) MCCALLEN, Texas - Charles R. Smith, 92, died June 2, 2003, and Ella L. Smith, 86, died Dec.19, 1999. Both were longtime residents of Alliance until their move to McCallen in 1977. Their graveside memorial service will be at 9 a.m. Saturday, Sep. 6, at the Alliance Cemetery. Memorials have been established to the Alliance Old-timers Baseball Association.

Stanley 'Hap' Adamson, 74

(Aug. 29) ALLIANCE - Stanley Henry 'Hap' Adamson, 74, died Thursday, Aug. 28, 2003, at Regional West Medical Center at Scottsbluff. He was born Nov. 6, 1928, at Nonpareil, to Arista Stanley and Agnes (Keane) Adamson.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Following his discharge he returned to work for the C.B. & Q. Railroad where he had been employed prior to his military service. Following 18 years of service to the railroad he became employed by Alliance Lumber as foreman for 38 years. On April 29, 1953, he married Eloise McKinney at Hemingford. He was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church and a life member of The American Legion and Elks Club. He is survived by his wife, Eloise; children, Jerry and wife Jeanette Adamson of Salt Lake City, Utah, Rick and wife Kelly Adamson of Potter, Marlene Corbett of Alliance, Brenda Adamson and husband Richard Dougan of Cascade, Md., Lt. Daryl Adamson of Washington, D.C., Gunnery Sgt. David and wife Ladonna Adamson of Great Lakes, Ill., and Christine Rippe of Alliance; 15 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He also is survived by his brothers Charles and Donald Adamson of Alliance. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Leonard and Winferd, sister Gladys Serl and granddaughter Sherrie Williams.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 30, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, with Fr. Bryan Ernest officiating. Burial with military rites will be in Calvary Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
