Chester D. Snow

Chester D. Snow, age 83 of Tilden, Nebraska formerly of Columbus, Nebraska died Saturday December 8, 2001 at Beverly Health Care in Tilden. Graveside Services will be held 11: 00 a.m. Wednesday at the Tekamah Cemetery in Tekamah, Nebraska. Services will be performed by Reverend Harun Gatobu and the Tekamah Masonic Lodge.

Chester D. Snow was born January 28, 1918 in Competition, Missouri to Pleas and Margaret (Finley) Snow. He graduated from Tekamah High School in Tekamah, Nebraska. On August 1, 1938 he was united in marriage to Arlene Elliott in Logan, Iowa. The couple lived in farmed in Tekamah until moving to Columbus in 1965 where Chester worked for Behlen Manufacturing. He was affiliated with the Baptist Church and a member of the Masonic Lodge.

Joan Schwartzer Goodman

Joan (Schwartzer) Goodman, 46, of Lincoln, formerly of Columbus, died Saturday December 1, 2001 at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Lincoln. Funeral services are 10: 00 am Wednesday December 5, 2001 at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Columbus with the Rev. Christopher Grimmond officiating. Visitation will be from 4-8 pm Tuesday at St. Anthony Church with a Vigil service at 7 pm. Visitation will continue Wednesday morning from 9-10 am, also at St. Anthony Church. Interment will be in St. Bonaventure Cemetery.

Joan Goodman was born March 5, 1955 in Columbus to Frank and Kathleen (Holys) Schwartzer. She attended St. Anthony Parochial School and graduated from Columbus High School in 1973. She was previously married to Steven Goodman. Joan lived in Lincoln where she was currently the training manager for Wendy's Restaurants. She attended St. Mary's Catholic Church in Lincoln. Joan was a devoted mother and grandmother, enjoyed crocheting, reading, and music.

MERYL A. POTTS

Meryl A. Potts, 88, of Columbus died Saturday, December 8, 2001 at the Columbus Manor. Funeral services are 10: 30 am Wednesday, December 12, 2001 at the First United Methodist Church in Columbus with the Rev. Gary Main officiating. Visitation is on Tuesday from 4-8 pm at McKown Funeral Home and continues on Wednesday from 9: 30 am until service time at the church. Interment will be in Roselawn Memorial Cemetery.

Meryl was born June 11, 1913 in Newman Grove, Nebraska to Bertel and Agnes (Duhachek) Nelson. She received her education in Newman Grove. Following her education she moved with her family to California. On December 7, 1937 she married Ralph Potts in Yuma, Arizona. She and Ralph continued living in the Los Angeles area until 1947 when they returned to the Tilden, Nebraska area. In 1957 they moved to Columbus where they lived for many years before moving to Arizona for 5 years. In the early 1990's they returned to Columbus where she has lived since. Along with raising her family, Meryl worked for 12 years at Dale Electronics. She was also a hostess for many years at Louie's Restaurant in Columbus. She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Columbus. She belonged to the Western Guild Circle and delivered Meals on Wheels. She enjoyed traveling with her husband and gardening.

Eleanor Gonka

Eleanor Gonka, 77, of Columbus died on Sunday November 18, 2001 at Columbus Community Hospital. Funeral services are 10: 00 am Wednesday November 21, 2001 at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church with the Rev. Dan Keller officiating. The family will receive friends on Tuesday evening from 6-8 pm at McKown Funeral Home. There will be a Vigil service at 7 pm at the funeral home. Visitation will continue on Wednesday morning from 9 am until service time at the church. Inurnment will be in Columbus Cemetery.

Eleanor Kelly was born June 3, 1924 in London, England to Albert & Eleanor Janette (Perry) Kelly. She was raised in London. During World War II she met William Gonka where they married on March 23, 1945 in England. In 1946 Eleanor was one of the first War Brides to arrive in Platte Co. Nebraska. Along with her husband they owned and operated the Ron De Voo Lounge in Columbus. They later sold the Lounge and built and managed the Redwood Motel in Osceola. They sold the Motel and bought the Columbus Monument Co. and operated the business until they retired in 1980. She was a homemaker and devoted wife, mother and grandmother.

Emilia B. Micek

Emilia B. Micek, 88, of Columbus formerly of Duncan, died Monday November 12, 2001 at the Columbus Manor. Funeral services are 10: 30 am on Thursday November 15 at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Duncan with the Rev. Dave Korth officiating. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 3-5 pm at McKown Funeral Home in Columbus and after 6 pm at St. Stanislaus Church in Duncan. There will be a Vigil service at 7: 30 pm Wednesday at the church. Visitation will continue on Thursday from 9 am until service time at the church. Burial will be in St. Stanislaus Cemetery in Duncan.

Emilia was born November 9, 1913 in Platte County, Nebraska to John and Mary (Maslonka) Slusarski. She received her education at St Stanislaus Grade School and District 16 Country School. She lived in Platte County all her life and married Alphons Micek October 24, 1937 in Duncan, NE. She raised a family and worked as head cook for the lunch program for St. Stanislaus School. She was a member of St. Stanislaus Church, St Anns Sodality, Franciscan Order-3rd Order of St. Francis, and Legion of Mary. Memorials may be directed to the donors choice.

Hildegarde "Hodgie" Odgaard

Hildegarde "Hodgie" Odgaard, age 84, of Columbus, Nebraska died Friday November 30, 2001 at her home. Services 10: 30 a.m. Tuesday December 4, 2001 at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church in Columbus. Burial will be in the St. Bonaventure Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3: 00 p.m. - 8: 00 p.m. Monday with a 7: 00 p.m. Vigil Service at McKown Funeral Home. Visitation will continue on Tuesday from 8: 00 a.m. - 10: 00 a.m. also at the funeral home.

Hildegarde P. "Hodgie" Odgaard was born August 23, 1917 in David City, Nebraska to John and Mary (Sabata) Theewen. She graduated from Dwight Assumption High School. On June 28, 1942 she was united in marriage to Medrick C. "Odie" Odgaard in Santa Barbara, California. The couple spent most of their lives in Columbus where they owned and operated several businesses including the Columbian Bar, Keen Korner Restaurant and Lounge, J & M Bar, and the Tip Top Bar. She retired in 1995. Hodgie was a member of St. Bonaventure Catholic Church, DAV Auxiliary and the American Legion Auxiliary. She was a devoted wife and mother.

Fern Birkel, 78, of Columbus, died Friday November 30 at St. Joseph Hospital in Omaha. Funeral services are 10: 30 am Wednesday, December 5 at St. Isidore Catholic Church in Columbus with the Rev. Joseph A. Miksch officiating. Visitation will be on Tuesday after 3: 00 pm at McKown Funeral Home with a Vigil service at 7: 00 pm at the funeral home. Visitation will continue Wednesday morning from 8-10 am at McKown Funeral Home. Burial will be in All Saints Cemetery.

Fern K. Birkel was born May 24, 1923 in Bellwood to Samuel and Mattie (Zehr) Kiser. She was raised in Columbus and worked various jobs before she married Louis Birkel on September 24, 1945 in Belleville, KS. She raised a family, worked as a Clerk at T.G.Y. for 8 years, Woolworths for 8 years, Polly Shoe Store for 6 years, Columbus Meat Market, West End Grocery, and Luschen's IGA. She was a member of St. Isidore Church, Christian Mothers, Life member of the DAV Auxillary, and the VFW Auxillary. She enjoyed crocheting and baking. Memorials may be made to the donors choice.

Gay Harriman

Gay Harriman, age 71, of Columbus, Nebraska died Thursday November 8, 2001 at the Columbus Community Hospital. Funeral Services are 2: 00 p.m. Tuesday November 13, 2001 at the Bible Baptist Church in Columbus with Pastor Robert Walker officiating. Burial will be in the Roselawn Cemetery in Columbus. Visitation will be from 3: 00 p.m. - 8: 00 p.m. Monday and from 8: 00 a.m. - 12: 00 p.m. Tuesday at McKown Funeral Home. Visitation will continue on Tuesday at the Bible Baptist Church from 1: 00 p.m. until service time.

Luetta Gay (Armstrong) Harriman was born February 8, 1930 in Brunswick, Ne. to Frank and Luella (Keetle) Armstrong. She attended grade school at District 78 and graduated from Brunswick High School with the class of 1947. On October 25, 1947 she married Bernard Harriman of Clearwater, NE. They were married at Long Pine. They worked for the Chicago-Northwestern Railroad for 9 years.. In 1957 they moved to Columbus where they have resided since. Gay managed the lunch counter at Tooley Drug for 15 years and became acquainted with many people. Gay was faithful in her Christian beliefs and was always willing to help wherever she could. She taught Sunday School for 30 years and has been a member of the Bible Baptist Church since 1957. She enjoyed gardening and painting. In 1961 her mother came to live with her where she made her home for 36 years.
