Gerald Wayne Johannes, 84

(Aug. 30) RENVILLE, Minn. - Gerald Wayne Johanns, 84, died Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2001, at Renville, Minn. He was born Dec. 13, 1916, in rural Underwood, N.D. His parents were Philip Edward and Opal (Snyder) Johannes.

He attended school in North Dakota, graduating from high school in 1935. He then attended Minot State Teachers College. He married Dorothy Duelholm on April 3, 1941, at West Point, Mont. He was employed by U.S. Rubber Co. at Des Moines, Iowa, until 1947, when the couple returned to the family farm in Underwood, N.D., farming there until 1958. He attended Lutheran Bible Institute in Minneapolis, Minn., and, from 1964 until 1985, was a nursing home administarator in Alliance, Kearney and Broken Bow, Neb., and Traer, Iowa. Upon retirement, the couple operated Pops Ice Cream Palor in Forest City, Iowa, until they moved to Renville in 1993. He was a member of Emden Christian Reformed Church, men's Bible study, Renville Lions Club and Gideons International. He is survived by his wife Dorothy of the home in Renville; three sons, Jerry Johannes of Alliance, David Johannes of Hemingford and Peter Johannes of Sidney; two daughters, Michal Ann Haakenson of Olivia and Shirley Northwood, Iowa; 12 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Mr. Johannes' funeral services were held in Renville, Minn., and Washburn, N.D. Dirks-Blem

Funeral Service of Renville, Minn., was in charge of arrangements.

Frank Kuskie, 80

(Aug. 30) HAY SPRINGS - Frank Kuskie, 80, died Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2002, at Mirage Flats.

He is survived by his wife, Rose Mary Kuskie of the home at Mirage Flats; two sons, Larry Kuskie of Alliance and Charlie Kuskie of Chadron; three daughters, Jeanie Snyder of Rushville, Joann Ross of Gering and Joyce Meredith of Bondurant, Iowa; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He also is survived by three sisters, Elaine Talbot of Rushville, Jean Alcorn of Chadron and Carol Warren of Pratt, Kan.

Mr. Kuskie's funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 31, at St. Mary's Holly Church, with Father Tom Miles officiating. Burial will be in Holly Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Hay Springs Ambulance Fund, in care of Chamberlain-Drabbels Mortuary, P.O. Box 443, Hay Springs, NE 69347.

Josh J. Veach, 26

(Aug. 30) LOVELAND, Colo. - Josh J. Veach, 26, former Alliance resident, died Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2003, at McKee Medical Center, Loveland, Colo.. He was born Jan. 11, 1977, at Moline, Ill. His parents were Scott Raymond and Carol Anne (Wahe) Veach.

He graduated from Alliance High School in 1995. He was a former resident of Lincoln, Neb., and had resided at Loveland for the past three years. He was employed in electronics manufacturing with Celestica, R.P.M. Electronics Flextronics Manufacturing. He enjoyed golfing, skateboarding, computers and sketching with pen and ink. He is survived by his parents, Scott and Melanee Veach of Alliance, and Terry and Carol Wignall of Loveland; grandparents Vernon Wahe of Estill Falls, Tenn., and Martha Wahe of Moline, Ill.; and special friend Ali Ross of Loveland. He was preceded in death by his brother, Aaron Veach.

Mr. Veach's funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 30, at Allnutt Funeral Service/Hunter Chapel in Loveland. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until service time Saturday. A final service will be in Moline, Ill. Memorials may be made to the Rocky Mountain Lions Eye Institute, in care of Allnutt Funeral Service, 2100 N. Lincoln Ave., Loveland, CO 80538.

Ladie M. Washburn, 87

(Aug. 31) PELL CITY, Ala. - Ladie M. Mashburn, 87, died Wednesday, Aug, 29, 2001. She was married to William F. Mashburn. Mr. Washburn preceded her in death. She was a seamstress and a supporter of gospel music.

She is survived by her son, Ray Mashburn of Alliance; three grandchildren, including Melinda and Matthew Fifield of Alliance; and three great-grandchildren, including Erin Lyn an Jeremy Fifield of Alliance.

Mrs. Mashburn's funeral will be at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 1, at Ridout's Trussville Chapel, Ala., with Revs. Amos Mashburn and Bobby Parker officiating. Burial will be in Jefferson Memorial Trussville, Ala. Memorials may be made to American Heart Association or donor's choice.

Jon Ward Hall, 65

(Sept. 1) ALLIANCE - Jon Ward Hall, 65, died Friday, Aug. 29, 2003, at Box Butte General Hospital. He was born Aug. 2, 1938, at Alliance to Ward J. and Mildred Lou (Currell) Hall.

After graduation from Alliance High School in 1956 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served until his retirement in 1975 as a Senior Chief Petty Officer. He served in Vietnam with the 32nd Naval Construction Battalion. He was a "Plank Owner," working on the pre-commissioning of the USS Independence CVA62. On Oct. 17, 1959, he married Johanna Pike at Brooklyn, N.Y. Following his retirement from the Navy, Jon returned to Alliance with his family and he joined his family in the operation of the family business, Hall's Hardware. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Shriners, Eagles, American Legion, V.F.W., and the Panhandle Golf Association. He is survived by his wife Johanna; daughters, Linda Jines of Alliance, Sandy Mann and Greg Morava of Lakeside; and son Ward William Hall of Las Vegas, Nev.; and grandchildren Jessica Jines, Samantha Jines, Tyler Jines, Jacob Mann and Joseph Mann. He also is survived by sisters, Pam Schnell of Scottsbluff, and Sue Lehl of Alliance. He was preceded in death by his parents and his son-in-law, Allen Jines.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 3, at the United Methodist Church, with Rev. Jerry Mercer officiating. Memorials may be given to the Heart of the Hills Fire Protection District, c/o Ed Dentler, HC 68 Box 7, Lakeside, NE 69351. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Beverly A. Jines, 62

(Sept. 2) HEMINGFORD - Beverly Ann Jines, 62, died Saturday, Aug. 30, 2003, at Hemingford Community Care Center following a long battle with Huntington's Chorea disease. She was born March 16, 1941, at Alliance, to George and Anna (Sass) Lee.

On Sept. 12, 1957, she was married to Harold (Smokey) Jines. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl and Lerick Johnson, and daughter-in-law, Linda Jines; and grandchildren Derek and Carley Johnson, Jessica, Samantha and Tyler Jines all of Alliance. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son Allen and brother Kenny Lee. Following organ donation to Harvard Brain and Tissue for scientific research of Huntington's disease, cremation took place and no services are planned. A memorial has been established to McLean Hospital for Beverly A. Jines memorial fund. Donations may be sent to Mailman Research Center, McLean Hospital,115 Mill Street, Belmont, MA 02478-9106 or to Cheryl Johnson, 419 Cheyenne, Alliance, NE 69301. Mary M. Burton, 75

(Sept. 3) KEARNEY - Mary M. Burton, 75, of Riverdale died Friday, Aug. 31, 2001, at Good Samaritan Hospital at Kearney. She was born September 16, 1925, at Alliance to William and Pearl G. (Jones) Burton.

She grew up in Bingham and graduated from High School at the University of Nebraska School of Agriculture at Curtis. She graduated from Oklahoma A & M University at Stillwater, Okla. with a degree in teaching. She then taught school in the Sandhills and then at Pleasanton. She then became an instructor for the United States Air Force and taught school at Air Force bases in the Philippines, Turkey, and England. She then moved to Kearney and worked as a travel agent until her retirement in 1987. She is survived by her brother, Ivan Burton of Riverdale; sister, Gwendolyn Darby of Pleasanton; and several nieces and nephews. Her parents and one brother preceded her in death.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 5 at the Bingham Lutheran Church, with Reverend Bill DeLisle officiating. Burial will be in the Bingham Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the donor's choice. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Noah Star, 74

(Sept. 3) GORDON - Noah Star, 74, of Gordon died Saturday, Aug. 26, 2001, at Crest View Care Center at Chadron. He was born Jan. 22, 1927 at Potato Creek, S.D. His parents were Philip and Elizabeth (Bear Nose) Star.

He had worked for Saults and son, First National Bank and the Gordon Sale Barn. He was a member of the Gordon Church of God. He is survived by one daughter Bernice Star-Simeon; and one brother Kenneth Star of Potato Creek, S.D.

Mr. Star's funeral will be at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Sept. 4, at the Church of God at Gordon, with Rev. Don Mink officiating. Burial will be in Gordon Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m., Monday, Sept. 3, at Cicmanec-Chamberlain-Pier Funeral Home at Gordon.

Margaret A. Housh, 87

(Sept. 3) WAUWATOSA, Wis. - Margaret A. Weinel Housh, 87, died Thursday, Aug. 22, 2002. She was born on Jan. 19, 1915, at Alliance.

She is survived by one son, Richard W. Housh; daughter, Marian Roundy; five grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. She also is survived by two sisters, Martha Beckman and Emma Weinel.

Mrs. Housh's funeral will be at 2 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 4, at the Chamberlain-Drabbels Mortuary at Hay Springs. Burial will be in the Hay Springs Cemetery.

Wayne Piper Sr., 72

(Sept. 3) ASHBY - Wayne A. "Red" Piper Sr., 72, died Monday, Sept. 1, 2003, at Regional West Medical Center. He was born Oct. 31, 1930, at Gordon, to Sam and Frances (Macumber) Piper.

He grew up on a ranch south of Gordon. On April 30, 1955, he married Emalou Broemer of Gordon at Gering. They had four children, Donna, Wayne, Kenneth and Connie. He spent most of his life working on ranches - 17 years for Don Vinton south of Gordon, and MaryAnn Vinton south of Whitman, and 27 years working and managing the Davis and Davis Estate north of Hyannis. He retired in 2002 to care for his wife and because of ill health. In addition to his passion for ranching, he enjoyed spending time with family, fishing and visiting with people. He is survived by daughters, Donna (Cliff) Benner of Stuart and Connie (Keith) Blaylock of Mitchell; son Wayne Piper Jr., of Hyannis; and grandchildren Toby Neal, Corey and Casey Benner, and Brittany, Nicole and Emily Blaylock. He also is survived by his twin brother, Blaine (Cathy) Piper of Fergus Falls, Minn., brother, Dale (Jerri) Piper of Gordon; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mr. Piper's funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Ssept. 4, at the United Church of Christ at Hyannis. Memorials have been established to the Grant County Fire and Rescue Unit, the Cancer Society or the donor's choice. Mullen Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Dr. E. "Doc" Von Tour, 86

(Sept. 4) Memorial services will be held at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Sept 6, at the American Legion in Alliance for longtime rancher and Sandhills veterinarian, Dr. E. "Doc" Von Tour.

He died in his home at Azle, Texas, on Aug. 27, at the age of 86. He was born July 1 1914. He served as veterinarian from 1942 to 1993 in Alliance and throughout the Sandhills. His contributions in this field are considered legendary.

He received the highest honor bestowed at the National Veterinary convention in Kansas City. He was recognized for having developed the splint (cast) for bulls, as well as inventing the penis operation for bulls, before which in both instances, injured bulls had to be shot. Known also for his work in Africa and Australia, he set up A1 programs in South Africa for that country's largest rancher, Mr. Ghant, he also taught people there how to set bulls' legs. He was past president of the National Veterinary Association, and was founder of the "On Top" Hereford Bull Sale.

Known to all as "Doc," as one rancher recalled: "He didn't have 'business acquaintances' ... they were all his friends. He was a legend as a veterinarian and even more a legend as everyone's friend." Probably no one was better known, loved and respected in states west, north and south of - as well as in Nebraska - than "Doc" Von Tour. A rancher friend said of him, "If ever there was a man who put the Sandhills on the map, it was 'Doc'."

"Doc" is survived by his wife Patsy of Azle, Texas, daughters: Judy (Jim) Fistler of Alliance and Jean (Sid) Thurston of Hyannis; sons: Robert Michael (Patti) Von Tour of Houston, Texas, and Michael Basler of Honolulu, Hawaii; and Stacy Von Tour of Denver, Colorado; grandchildren: Mark and Jennifer Sheets of Alliance; Chisum Thurston of Hyannis, and Celinda Knight of Malibu, Calif. His first wife, Virginia Von Tour, preceded him in death; daughter, Joan M. Knight; and grandson, Brian Knight. A Dr. E. Von Tour Scholarship fund has been established at Community First Banks.

Arthur P. Schaer, 79

(Sept. 4) GORDON - Arthur P. Schaer, 79, died Friday, Sept. 1, at his home. He was born march 13, 1921, in Sheridan County. His parents were Alfred and Emma (Gerber) Schaer. He married Wilma Zlomke on June 8, 1944. He was a lifetime resident of the Gordon area.

He worked as a farmer and rancher. His survivors include his wife of Gordon; four daughters, Jo Ann Schaer of Scottsbluff, Shirley Russell of Owasso, Okl., Linda Simonson of Gordon and Jackie Monk of Central City; one brother, Ben Schaer of Gordon; three sisters, Rose Schaer Petersen Reitz of Rushville, Ann Stone of Cherryvale, Kan. and Mildred Stava of Gordon; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 5, at the Grace Lutheran Church in Gordon with Vicar Scott Shields officiating. A memorial has been established for the First Presbyterian Church. Donations may be sent to the Community First Bank of Gordon, P.O. Box 250, Gordon, NE 69343. Chamberlain-Gates Mortuary is in charge of the arrangements.

Mollie Lehl, 90

(Sept. 4) SCOTTSBLUFF - Mollie (Gettman) Lehl, 90, died Sunday, Sept. 2, 2001, at her home. She was born Nov. 21, 1910, in Frank, Russia, of German parents, Fredrick and Anna Margaret (Kaufman) Gettman.

The family came to Canada in 1913 and then to Scottsbluff. She was educated in Scottsbluff and received her citizenship in 1936. She was married to Daniel P. Lehl Nov.19, 1935, at Emmanuel Congregational Church in Scottsbluff. She and her husband farmed in the valley until 1946, when they moved to Hemingford where they raised wheat and cattle for thirty-five years. They retired from farming in 1979 and returned to Scottsbluff. She was a member of the Emmanuel Congregational Church, where she taught Sunday School and sang in choir. She was a member of the Emmanuel Ladies Circle and the Church Brotherhood. She is survived by two daughters Jean Ann Votruba of Scottsbluff and Sandra Piekarski of Warren, Mich.; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She also is survived by one sister, Mary Jane Parsons of Fullerton, Calif.

Mrs. Lehl's funeral will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 6, at the Emmanuel Congregational Church at Scottsbluff, with Pastor Larry Scovil officiating. Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Emmanuel Congregational Church. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 5, at Jolliffe Funeral Home, and Thursday, Sept. 6 at the service. Jolliffe Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Lowell D. Andersen, 53

(Sept. 4) SENECA - Lowell D. Andersen, 53, died Monday, Sept. 3, 2001, at Great Plains Regional Medical Center at North Platte. He was born June 14, 1948 in Alliance. His parents are Dwayne and Nadene (Anspach) Andersen.

He graduated from Thedford High School in 1966, and served three years in the U. S. Navy. He married Judy Wernke May 18, 1968. The later divorced. He was a volunteer fireman and EMT, and a ranch mechanic. He was a partner in L&L Repair at Mullen and operated a repair shop at Ault Colo. He is survived by Judy Andersen of Ault, Colo.; daughter Terri Sharp of Casper, Wyo.; son Kevin Andersen of Ault, Colo.; and five grandchildren. He also is survived by his parents, grandmother, Louise Anspach of Mullen; and four brothers, Darrell Andersen of Alliance, Dean Andersen of Mullen, Allen Andersen and Randy Andersen of Thedford.

Mr. Andersen's memorial service will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 8, at the Seneca Auditorium, Seneca, with Rev. Linda Martin officiating. Inurnment with Military Honors will follow the service at the Seneca Cemetery. The family will be available from 9:30 a.m. Saturday until the service begins. Memorials are established to the Seneca Auditorium Fund or Seneca Cemetery. Arnold & Mullen Funeral Homes in charge of arrangements.

Elizabeth "Betty" Sullivan, 67

(Sept. 4) ALLIANCE - Elizabeth "Betty" Sullivan, 67, died Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2002, at Regional West Medical Center at Scottsbluff. She was born Oct. 9, 1934, at Alliance to John and Vera (Wait) Moscrip.

She graduated from Alliance High School in 1952. She met her future husband, Paul Sullivan, while they both worked for KCOW Radio. They were married on June 9,1963, at Alliance. After their marriage they lived at Sterling, Colo. until 1972 when they moved to Bozeman, Mont. While there she established an answering service and saw it grow from 11 clients to 200 in seven years. They returned to Alliance in 1983 where she worked for the Alliance Times-Herald. She retired in 1997. She was added to the Lord's church in fall of 1974 when she was baptized in the Bozeman Church of Christ. She was a member of the Alliance Church of Christ. She is survived by her husband, Paul; sons Steve and Lora Sullivan of Alliance, and Don Sullivan and Deidra Lockman of Lincoln; and grandchildren Katy, Sorcha, McKenna and Deven. She also is survived by brothers, sisters and spouses, Dick and Kathy Moscrip of Fruita, Colo., Bob and Karen Moscrip of Scottsbluff, Bill and Marion Moscrip of Alliance, Mary and Doug Edwards of Hastings, Rex and Sara Moscrip and Max Moscrip of Alliance. Her parents and brother Jerry Moscrip preceded her in death.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Friday, Sept. 6, at the Bates-Gould Chapel, with Ron Kretz officiating. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
