Mary T. Kula, age 91, of Silver Creek, Nebraska died Tuesday May 28, 2002 at the Genoa Community Hospital. Funeral Services are 10: 30 a.m. Friday May 31, 2002 at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church - Krakow rural Genoa, Nebraska with Reverend Robert Nienaber officiating. Burial will be in Sts. Peter & Paul Cemetery. Visitation is after 4: 00 p.m. Thursday & 9: 30 a.m. until service time Friday at the church. There will be a Sts. Peter & Paul Altar Society Rosary at 4: 00 p.m. Thursday and a Vigil Service 7: 30 p.m. Thursday also at the church.
Mary T. Kula, was born March 19, 1911 to George and Veronica (Liss) Jurkowski. She attended school in Nance County, and married Alex Kula June 5, 1934 at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Krakow. She farmed along with her husband in Merrick and Nance Counties. Alex died on August 7, 1969. Mary lived in Columbus 4 years and then retired and moved to Silver Creek, Ne. She was a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Silver Creek and was a lifetime member of Sts. Peter & Paul Altar Society. She enjoyed raising her children, gardening, Polish music, and playing cards.

Geraldine L. Schwartz, 69, of Columbus died Saturday May 11, 2002 at Beverly Health Care in Columbus. Funeral services are 10: 30 am Wednesday May 15 at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church in Columbus. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 3-8 pm at McKown Funeral Home with a Vigil service at 7: 00 pm. Visitation will continue on Wednesday morning from 8-10 am at the funeral home. Interment will be in All Saints Cemetery in Columbus.
Geraldine L. Schwartz was born March 10, 1933 in Inavale, NE to Herbert & Ellen (Mattison) Lambrecht. She grew up in Red Cloud and graduated from Red Cloud High School in 1951. On September 23, 1951 she was united in marriage to Clayton Schwartz in Red Cloud. They lived in Potter, NE for a short time before moving to Columbus in 1954. She raised five children and enjoyed being a Cub Scout Den Mother, working with crafts, cross-stitch, gardening, fishing and being involved in Church activities. She returned to school where she earned her LPN degree in 1967 from Platte College-Columbus. She worked in the Behlen Community Hospital for a couple of years before going to work for Dr. Clinton Heine as his nurse. She worked for Dr. Heine for over 30 years before retiring in 1999. She was a member of St. Bonaventure Catholic Church.

Herbert L. Deden, 90, of Columbus died Tuesday May 21, 2002 at Columbus Manor. Services are 10: 00 am Friday May 24 at Peace Lutheran Church in Columbus with Rev. Michael V. Klatt and Rev. Ernest G. Smith officiating. Visitation will on Friday from 9: 00 am until service time at the Church. Interment will be in Columbus Cemetery with Military Honors by Hartman Post #84 American Legion Honor Guard. Memorials are suggested to Peace Lutheran Church.
Herbert L. Deden was born November 30, 1911 in Seward County, Nebraska to Albert and Minnie (Brandt) Deden. He moved with his family to Phillips Co., Colorado in 1921. He remained in Colorado where he worked for various farmers until he was drafted into the US Army in 1942. He served in the military and spent most of his active duty time in India. He was discharged on December 29, 1945. He returned to Phillips and Sedgwick counties in Colorado and after the death of his brother Dave in 1949 he helped his sister-in-law on the farm. In 1958 he moved to Pleasant Dale, NE to help care for his ailing father Albert. He and his mother Minnie moved to Columbus where he spent 18 years working for Behlen Manufacturing Company before retiring in 1977. Herb had lived at Prairie Village for 4 years before entering the Columbus Manor. He was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Columbus.

Funeral services are 10: 30 am Monday May 20, 2002 at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Silver Creek with the Rev. Dave Korth officiating. Visitation will be after 5: 00 pm Sunday at St. Lawrence church with a Vigil service set for 7: 30 pm. Visitation will continue Monday morning from 9: 30 am until service time at the church. Alvin B. Swertzic was born August 9, 1909 in Merrick County, Nebraska to John & Stella (Dubas) Swertzic. He attended Polk and Nance County School and farmed the family farm in Merrick County. He enjoyed playing cards, polka music, and buying new cars throughout his life. He was a member of the church.

Anita L. Latare, age 74, of Columbus, Nebraska died Sunday May 12, 2002 at Columbus Community Hospital. Anita L. Latare was born February 15, 1928 in Lost Nation, Iowa to August and Bernetta (Nissen) Jensen. She graduated from Lost Nation High School in 1946. She married Donald Latare on January 7, 1948 at Lost Nation, Iowa. The couple lived in Lost Nation before moving to DeWitt, Iowa and later to Columbus, Nebraska. Anita worked as a secretary for various places & also worked at Gibsons, Alco and was an Avon representative. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Eagles Auxiliary, A.A.R.P., & did volunteer work at the Columbus Hospital.

Myrtle A. Bivens was born November 15, 1916 near Genoa, Nebraska to Theodore W. and Hattie (Lutzke) Blair. She received her early education at rural district #30 in Nance County. In 1934 she graduated from Genoa High School. She married Carl H. Bivens on December 31, 1939 in Archer, Nebraska. Along with raising her family she worked at Dale Electronics in Columbus for 20 years. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Silver Creek where she was active with the U.M.W. and Bible study class.

Anthony G. Hilger was born July 3, 1919 in Cedar Rapids, Nebraska to Joseph and Mertle (Murphy) Hilger. He received his education in Cedar Rapids, Nebraska. Bud married Zathea I. Jackson on April 23, 1940 in Little Rock, Ark. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He worked along with Walt & Mike Behlen fabricating different steel presses at Behlen Manufacturing. He was a foreman for the tool & die department at Behlen for 34 years. He enjoyed woodworking as a hobby. Bud was a member of St. Bonaventure Catholic Church.

On October 26, 1947 Arlene was united in marriage to Delmer Ahrens in Columbus. The couple lived in Columbus where she worked for Nebraska Public Power District for 50 years retiring in 1991. Arlene was a member of St. Bonaventure Catholic Church and the American Legion Auxiliary.
