Osmunda Avendano

Osmunda Avendano, 27, died Wednesday February 20, 2002 at St. Joseph Hospital in Omaha. Funeral services are 8: 00 am Saturday February 23 at Iglesia Pentecostes Pan de Vida Church (1257 26th Avenue) in Columbus. There will be a prayer service on Friday at 7: 00 pm at the church. Visitation will be held at the church until services Saturday. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Cemetery.

Osmunda Avendano was born March 25, 1974 in Honduras to Mauricio & Osmunda Izaquirre. She grew up in Honduras before moving to California 10 years ago. In 1996 she married Roberto Avendano in California. She moved to Columbus 2 years ago. She was a member of Iglesia Pentecostes Pan de Vida Church in Columbus where she sang and taught Sunday school.

Donald C. Jones

Donald C. Jones, 47, died Sunday April 21, 2002 at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island. Funeral services are 10: 30 am Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church in Silver Creek with the Rev. Bev Minor officiating. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 4-7 pm at McKown Funeral Home in Silver Creek. Visitation will continue at the Church on Wednesday from 9: 30 am until service time. Interment will be in Roselawn Memorial Cemetery in Columbus. Memorials may be directed to the family's choice.

Donald was born on April 19, 1955 in Fullerton to Clarence and Dolores (Heins) Jones. He grew up on the farm outside of Silver Creek before moving into Silver Creek where he attended schools. He graduated from Silver Creek High School in 1973. On May 31, 1975 he married Sharon K. Peterson at the United Methodist Church in Silver Creek. He farmed and worked for Becton-Dickinson in Columbus. He enjoyed hunting, playing cards, spending time with his friends and family, and was a member of Ducks Unlimited.

Steven W. Szatko

Steven W. Szatko, age 81, of Grand Island, Nebraska died Friday April 12, 2002 at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island. Funeral Services will be 9: 30 a.m. Tuesday April 16, 2002 at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Clarks, Nebraska with Reverend Don Cleary officiating. Burial will be in Ss. Peter & Paul Cemetery - Krakow, rural Genoa, Nebraska. Visitation will begin after 5: 00 p.m. Monday with a 7: 00 p.m. Vigil Service at St. Peter's Church in Clarks. Visitation will continue Tuesday morning from 8: 30 a.m. until service time also at the church.

Steven W. Szatko was born April 6, 1921 in Greeley County, Nebraska to James & Victoria (Gembica) Szatko. He attended school at Krakow while living at the dormitory. Following school he returned to the family farm in Greeley County. Steve served in the U.S. Navy Sea Bees during WWII. He then returned to the Fullerton area where he owned and operated a garage. On June 3, 1947 Steve was united in marriage to Rose Nowak. He farmed in the Fullerton & Silver Creek areas until 1956 when he moved to Omaha, Nebraska. He worked as a heavy equipment mechanic until 1986 when he retired and returned to the Clarks area. In 1994 Steve moved to Grand Island.

Rev. Gerald C. Messman

Rev. Gerald C. Messman, age 97, of Lincoln, formerly of Duncan, Nebraska, died Friday; March 1, 2002 at Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital in Lincoln. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10: 30 a.m. Tuesday; March 5, 2002 at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Bellwood, Nebraska with The Most Reverend Fabian W. Bruskewitz and the Very Reverend Robert A. Roh officiating. Burial will be in the St. Peter's Cemetery in rural Bellwood, Nebraska. Visitation will be Monday after 5: 00 p.m. at the church in Bellwood. A rosary will be held at 7: 00 p.m. also at the church. Visitation will continue Tuesday morning from 9: 30 a.m. until service time at the church.

Rev. Gerald C. Messman was born August 15, 1904 in Zwevegkem- West Flanders, Belgium to Frank and Emma (Vervaecke) Messman. He attended boarding school in Belgium before beginning his college education. He studied Classics at St. Umandus-Courtrai, Belgium from 1920-25. He then attended Petit Leminaire Roulers from 1925-1927 where he studied Philosophy. From 1928-31 he attended American College in Louvain, Belgium. He was ordained July 12, 1931 at the American College by Rt. Rev. Bishop J. Murray for the Diocese of Lincoln. He began serving as Assistant Pastor in Hastings, Nebraska on September 14, 1931. He then served as Pastor in Benkelman, Stratton, Cambridge, Roseland and served the mission church in Logan all in southern Nebraska. On October 30, 1949 he was appointed Pastor of St. Peters Church in Bellwood. During his tenure in Bellwood the current church was built. On September 8, 1959 he was appointed Parish Priest Consultor. Rev. Messman retired to Duncan, Nebraska on July 1, 1975. He lived in Duncan until moving to Lincoln in 2001.

He is survived by nieces and nephews.

Frank O. Bosak

Frank Otto Bosak, 87, of Dorchester died Sunday March 3, 2002 at his home. Funeral services are 10: 30 am Wednesday at the United Methodist Church in Dorchester. Visitation will begin on Tuesday at 10: 00 am at Kuncl Funeral Home in Crete. Visitation will continue on Wednesday beginning one hour prior to service time at the church. Interment will be in the Dorchester Cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. Elizabeth Home Care Services, Dorchester United Methodist Church, or donor's choice.

Frank Otto Bosak was born on June 8, 1914 southeast of Pleasant Hill to Frank and Anna (Krejci) Bosak, the youngest of three sons. He attended Evergreen District # 25 school and later, Crete High School. On December 28, 1936, he was united in marriage to Clara Ella Taborek. Two children were born to this marriage, Betty and Larry. Frank and Clara farmed near Wilber for a couple years and later Frank worked at the Crete Mills. During WWII they made their home in Lincoln where he worked in the Stop Nut Factory. In July 1945 they moved to Dorchester and Frank began a long career at the Dorchester Farmers Coop Elevator. On January 1, 1948, he became the general manager, a position he held for thirty years. Under his management, the elevator began to prosper and grow. He retired in 1976.

Frank was a member of the Dorchester United Methodist Church for over fifty years. He also served as a town board member and was a volunteer firemen. He was a quality woodworker of which his family and friends have many wonderful treasures. Frank and Clara enjoyed fishing and traveling and made many trips to Ten Mile Lake, MN with family and friends.

He is survived by his wife Clara, daughter Betty (John) Potter of Dorchester, son Larry (Jean) Bosak of Columbus, grandchildren Carey, Jack, and Tiphanie Potter of Lincoln, Jenny, Amy, and Stacey Bosak of Omaha, great-grandchildren Joe and Kate Potter, special Niece: Alvina Remmers and family, special nephew Alvin and Charlene Kalkwarf and family, sisters-in-law Helen Bosak, Bernice Bosak and Donna Taborek, several nieces and nephews. Frank was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Robert and Rudolph.

Arthur E. Jaworski

Arthur E. Jaworski, age 84, of Columbus, Nebraska died Monday March 18, 2002 at his home. Services are 10: 30 am Thursday March 21 at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church in Columbus. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 3-9 pm at McKown Funeral Home with a Vigil service at 7: 30 pm. Visitation will continue on Thursday from 8-10 am at McKown Funeral Home. Burial will be in St. Bonaventure Cemetery with Military Honors by Hartman Post # 84 American Legion Honor Guard. Memorials are suggested to American Legion Baseball or to the donor's choice.

Arthur E. Jaworski was born February 11, 1918 in Columbus, Nebraska to Emil and Lena (Ewert) Jaworski. He graduated from Kramer High School in Columbus. Art worked various jobs in Columbus before entering the military in 1942. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1942 - 1943. He married Bernice K. Yosten on December 25, 1942 at Camp Rucker, Alabama. Following his discharge from the service the couple made their home in Columbus. He worked for Loup River Public Power and then became a buyer for Becton Dickinson from 1963 - 1976 when he retired. Art became deeply involved in the organized baseball programs of the Legion, as chairman of the American Legion Athletic Committee and later became the first president of the Cornhusker American Legion Baseball League. He helped to organize Legion sponsored youth programs, the Juniors, the First National Bank Blues and the Legion Reds. For many years Art and Bernice helped organize American Legion Baseball programs all over the state. In 2001 Art was inducted in the Columbus Baseball Hall of Fame. Art ran the American Legion from 1948 - 1955 and was Commander of the Legion in 1966. He served on the City of Columbus Board of Parks and Recreational Commissioners from 1970 - 1982. He was a life member of the Hartman Post #84 American Legion, served on the Honor Guard, the Disabled American Veterans Pawnee Chapter #20, 40 & 8 Columbus Voiture 841. Art was a member of St. Bonaventure Catholic Church in Columbus.

Craig Kralik

Craig Kralik, age 32, of Columbus, Nebraska died Saturday April 6, 2002 at Methodist Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska. Services are 10: 30 a.m. Wednesday April 10, 2002 at St. Isidore Catholic Church in Columbus with Reverend Joseph A. Miksch officiating. Burial will be in the All Saints Cemetery in Columbus. Visitation is after 5: 00 p.m. Tuesday with a 7: 00 p.m. Vigil Service at St Isidore Church. Visitation will continue Wednesday morning from 8: 00 a.m. - 10: 00 a.m. at McKown Funeral Home. Memorials may be directed to the family.

Craig Kralik was born November 15, 1969 in Columbus, Nebraska to Daniel and Bonnie (Nelson) Kralik. He graduated from Columbus High School in 1988. On June 4, 1994 he was united in marriage to Tamara Harding at Trinity Lutheran Church in Columbus. Craig worked for Trowbridge Motor Company before going to work for Coca - Cola Bottling Company. He loved sports and was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan. Craig enjoyed golfing and spending time with his family.

Lillian Rowlands, age 74, of Columbus, Nebraska died Tuesday April 23, 2002 at the Columbus Community Hospital. Services are 10: 30 a.m. Friday April 26, 2002 at St. Bonaventure Church in Columbus with Reverend Tom Weisbecker officiating. Burial will be in the St. Bonaventure Cemetery. Visitation is 4: 00 p.m. - 8: 00 p.m. Thursday with a 7: 00 p.m. Vigil Service at McKown Funeral Home. Visitation will continue Friday morning from 8: 00 a.m. - 10: 00 a.m. also at the funeral home.

Lillian was born May 27, 1927 in Columbus, Nebraska to Frank and Lillian (Berney) Dietz. She graduated from St. Bonaventure High School in Columbus and attended Duschene College in Omaha. She returned to Columbus where she worked for N.P.P.S. She married Donald E. Rowlands on November 7, 1948 at St. Bonaventure Church in Columbus. From 1972-1983 they lived in York until returning to Columbus. She was a homemaker. She enjoyed being with her grandchildren and their dogs. She also enjoyed playing bridge and dancing. She was a member of St. Bonaventure Catholic Church in Columbus.

She is survived by:

Funeral Services are 10: 00 a.m. Saturday April 27, 2002 at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Silver Creek with Reverend Dave Korth officiating. Burial will be in the St. Lawrence Cemetery in Silver Creek. Visitation will begin on Friday after 5: 00 p.m. with a Vigil Service at 7: 30 p.m. at St. Lawrence Church in Silver Creek. Visitation will continue Saturday morning from 9: 00 a.m. until service time also at the church.

Anna Starostka was born October 27, 1908 in Clarks, Nebraska to Metro and Mary (Demboski) Beck. She grew up on a farm near Clarks where she attended country school. On February 12, 1931 Anna was united in marriage to Edward Starostka. He died January 9, 1950. Anna lived in the Clarks and Silver Creek before moving to Stromsburg. She enjoyed reading, sewing, and dancing. She was a member ot St. Lawrence Church and St. Lawrence Altar Society.

Visitation continues Thursday from 10: 00 a.m. until service time also at the funeral home.

Valjean H. Sohl was born December 25, 1937 in Madison, Nebraska to Herman C. and Maria (Severin) Sohl. He graduated from Leigh High School. Val worked in Omaha, Nebraska before moving to Columbus where he went to work for Lueschen I.G.A. He married Helen Galley on June 7, 1958 at St. Bonaventure Church. Val also worked for Oasis Bar, Curly's Bar in Leigh and then Joe & Al's Grocery Store until retirement. He enjoyed playing fast pitch softball in his younger years and recently enjoyed selling pumpkins at Halloween.
