Madeline Bedient, 86

(Sept. 4) ALLIANCE - Madeline Bedient, 86, died Sept. 3, 2002, at Good Samaritan Health Care Center. She was born June 14, 1916, in Garden County, the ninth of ten children born to John and Minnie Wait.

She was married to Stanley Bedient on March 5, 1938, at Harrisburg. She taught in rural schools of Sheridan and Box Butte Counties for nine years following completion of normal school work at Chadron. She was a bookkeeper at the Alliance National Bank from 1952-1979. Madeline was a longtime member of the Eastern Star, VFW Auxiliary, life member of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 7 where she served as unit president in 1970-71, and Alliance Methodist Church. She was active in and subsequently worked for Weight Watchers International. She will be remembered for her good spirits, compassion and concerns for others, and an incredible memory for names, dates, figures, and locations. She is survived by her husband, Stanley, of Alliance; sons and daughters-in-law Steve and Patti Bedient of Crescent City, Calif., and Douglas and Barbara Bedient of Murphysboro, Ill.; grandchildren, Traci (Dustin) Atwood of Sugarland, Texas, Margo (James) Bedient Dilworth of London, England, and John (Stephanie) Bedient of South Bend, Ind.; and great-grandchildren, Sierra and Derrick Atwood of Sugarland, and Emma, Madeline and Jack Dilworth of London. She also is survived by one sister, Elna Sampy, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 7, at the Hemingford Cemetery, with Paul Sullivan officiating. Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Friday, Sept. 6, at Bates-Gould Funeral Home at Alliance. Memorials may be made to the American Legion Auxiliary, in care of Ellen Christensen, 932 Toluca, Alliance, NE 69301; Prairie Haven Hospice, P.O. Box 21, Alliance, NE 69301-0021; or a charity of the donor's choice in lieu of flowers. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Ruth C. Burnham, 94

(Sept. 4) ALLIANCE - Long time Alliance resident Ruth Catharine (Laird) Burnham, 94, died Monday, Sept. 2, 2002, at her home. She was born Dec. 22, 1907, at Cozad to John W. and Blanche C. (Montgomery) Laird.

She graduated from Cozad High School in 1925 and Cotner College at Lincoln in 1929 with a Bachelor's Degree in Music Education. She worked on her Master's Degree at Northwestern University at Evanston, Ill. She taught music in the Adams school system in 1929-1930 before becoming the music teacher in the Beatrice City Schools from 1930-1933. She was married to Arnold G. Burnham at Lincoln on May 29, 1933. He preceded her in death in 1971. She and her husband lived at Oconto for one year before moving to Bridgeport in 1934 where they lived for seven years. They moved to Alliance in 1941. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Alliance, the first Slagle Memorial Library Board, and PEO. In 1977, she was instrumental in the donation of the Slagle Clinic building to the City of Alliance for use as the Slagle Memorial Library. She was President of the Community Concert Association and a driving force in raising monies and bringing fine arts concerts to Alliance. She was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers. She is survived by three children, Bonnie R. Speck of Alliance, Robyn A. Burnham of Springerville, Ariz., and Arnold G. Burnham, M. D. of Fort Collins, Colo.; seven grandchildren, Michael S. O'Brien, James A. O'Brien, Bonnie E. O'Brien, William L. O'Brien, Joey L. Brost, Rebecca A. Brost, and Ruth C. E. Reniers; four great-grandchildren, Sean P. O'Brien, Colleen E. O'Brien, Alexander M. Winston and Josef V. B. Potmesil; and one great-great-grandchild, Kennedy O'Brien, She also is survived by her brother Richard of Alturas, Calif., and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 7, the First Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Stephen Roosa and Fr. Paul Mottl officiating. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established to the First Presbyterian Church of Alliance or the Carnegie Arts Center. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Dale R. Hopp, 62

(Sept. 4) ALLIANCE - Dale Raymond Hopp, 62, died Monday, Sept. 1, 2003, at Charter Oak, Iowa. He was born Nov. 5, 1940, at Worthington, Minn., to Raymond and Leona (Vogt) Hopp.

He was baptized at St. John's Lutheran School at Charter Oak. He graduated from Charter Oak High School in 1958, and was a member of the Iowa National Guard and Reserves. He was married to Sharon Naab on June 4, 1961, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church at Ute, Iowa. They were blessed with three wonderful children, Brenda Sue, Bridget Sue and Steven Dale. In 1968, he became a Trooper with the Nebraska State Patrol, and was stationed at Oakland, Columbus and Lincoln. In 1977, he was employed by Burlington Northern Railroad as a brakeman at Alliance until his retirement in 1992. He is survived by his daughters, Brenda (Allan) Hanson of LaQuinta, Calif., and Bridget (Mark) Vaughn of Alliance; son, Steven (Trista) Hopp of Alliance; grandchildren, Ashton and Tavyn Hanson, Bryce and Brooke Vaughn, and Alex, Taylor and Jordon Hopp. He also is survived by brother Don (Leanna) Hopp of Charter Oak; sister Sharon (Dennis) Dahms of Clear lake City, Texas; and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Mr. Hopp's funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Sept. 8, at the Huebner Funeral Home, Charter Oak, Iowa.

Jennie May Donielson, 88

(Sept. 5) ALLIANCE - Jennie May Donielson, 88, died Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2001, at Highland Park Care Center.

She was born April 16, 1913, in a sod house on the family ranch north of Ashby to George and Emma May (King) Adam. Following her father's death her mother moved to Newcastle, Wyo. to homestead there. Jennie lived there until 1935 when she was married. To this union twin daughters were born. In 1953 Jennie and her girls moved to Alliance until 1956 when they moved to Denver. She lived there until returning to Alliance in 1992. During her life Jennie enjoyed the field of art. She worked as a Photographer's re-toucher and colorist for several studios and had done oil painting on commission for many years. She is survived by her daughter Nancy May Donielson of Sun City, Ariz.; grandson Troy and Laura Poff of Denver, Colo.; and numerous nieces and nephews. Her parents, daughter Cynthia, and 5 brothers preceded her in death.

Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m., Friday, Sept. 7 at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church in Alliance. The Reverend John Adam will officiate. Memorials may be given to the Carnegie Arts Center. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Ida Mae Kirkhart, 89

(Sept. 5) GORDON - Ida Mae Kirkhart, 89, died Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2001, at Gordon Countryside Care. She was born Oct. 4, 1911, at Murdo, S.D. Her parents were Frank and Ethel Pearl (Greenough) Morsett.

She was married to Orville Kirkhart in 1953. They lived in Oklahoma where Orville farmed until his death in 1983. She then returned to Gordon and had been a resident of Gordon Countryside Care since 1991. She had worked as a cook at the Coffee Shop Cafˇ at Martin, S.D. She is survived by one brother, Robert Morsett of Rushville; and nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Kirkhart's funeral will be at 11 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 6, at the Cicmanec-Chamberlain-Pier Funeral Home with Rev. James Herr of the Gordon Bible Church officiating. Interment will be in the Gates Cemetery at Laverne, Okla. A memorial has been established for Gordon Countryside Care. Donations may be sent to Community first Bank, P.O. Box 250, Gordon, NE 69343-0250. Cicmanec-Chamberlain-Pier Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Rick Ziegler, 50

(Sept. 5) MARTIN, S.D. - Rick Ziegler, 50, died Sunday, Sept. 2 at Rapid City Regional Hospital. He was born Sept. 13, 1950, at Hot Springs, S.D. His parents were Raymond and Dorothy (Karns) Ziegler.

He married Patty Hein July 13, 1973; they divorced. They had one daughter. He married Mary Anderson, Aug. 5, 1983. He had owned and operated Ziegler funeral Home at Martin at the time of his death. He also had owned and operated Ziegler Furniture Store from 1979 to 1996. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving in Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, and Stuttgart, West Germany. He was a member of St. Katherine's Episcopal Church at Martin, VFW, American Legion, Pioneer Lodge 219 AF&AM, Ducks Unlimited and Pheasants Forever. He is survived by his wife Mary of the home; and one daughter Amber Ziegler of Rapid City. He also is survived by a sister, LaVerne Arnold of Martin.

Mr. Ziegler's funeral will be at 10 a.m., Friday, Sept. 7, at the American Legion Auditorium at Martin. Burial will be in the Martin Community Cemetery. A memorial has been established with a specific designation yet to be made. Ziegler Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Jessie "Janet" Burt, 68

(Sept. 5) VALE, S.D. - Jessie "Janet" Burt, 68, died Sunday, Sept. 1, 2002, at the Sturgis Community Health Care Center, Sturgis, S.D. She was born Jan. 13, 1934, at Hyannis, to Andrew and Jessie (Haney) Jones.

She graduated from Alliance High School, then moved to Rapid City, S.D., where she married. She then moved to Vale, S.D., where she lived with her family of dogs until her death. She is survived by one son, Richard (Sue) Rust of Denver, Colo.; two dayghters, Nancy Dyer of Casper, Wyo., and Kathy (Jerry) Flaigg of Sturgis; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She also is survived by three sisters, Berneice Wright, Maxine Osborne and Shirley Gillespie; brother, William "Billie" Jones; and two brothers-in-law, "Doc" Gillespie and Bill McMaster.

Mrs. Burt's funeral will be at 2 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 7, at the United Methodist Church at Sturgis, with Pastor Keith Nelson officiating. Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday, Sept. 6, at Kinkade Funeral Chapel at Sturgis and one hour prior to the service on Saturday.

E. Dean Buffington, 81

(Sept. 5) OSCEOLA - E. Dean Buffington died Aug. 11, 2003, at Osceola. He was born June 8, 1922, at Horace.

He graduated from High school at Padrona, Colo., before moving to Alliance that same year. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1942, and served until 1945. During that time, Sgt. Buffington served in North Africa and Italy where he earned the Infantry Combat Medal, Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. His main vocation was dry cleaning, which he learned while living at Alliance. He and his wife, Maxine, moved to Osceola in 1959, where they owned and operated a dry cleaning business until their retirement in 1987. He is survived by his wife, son Ron, daughter Susan, four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He also is survived by one brother, John.

Mr. Buffington's funeral was Wednesday, Aug. 13, at Osceola.

Delores "Dee" Jensen, 80

(Sept. 6) GORDON - Delores "Dee" Jensen, 80, died Tuesday, Sept. 5, at the Gordon Memorial Hospital. She was born July 25, 1920, at Wakefield. Her parents were Howard and Blanche (Kinder) Goshorn.

She was married to Hans Rodney Jensen on Jan. 17, 1946. He preceded her in death. She and her husband lived in Commerce City, Colo. and in Alliance. She returned to Gordon in 1993. She was a homemaker, but had also worked for J.C. Penny and Jones Cleaners.

Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 7, at the Gordon Cemetery. A memorial has been established for the Gordon American Legion.

Donations may be sent to the Community First National Bank, P.O. Box 250, Gordon, NE 69343. Cicmanec-Pier Funeral Service is in charge of the arrangements.

Vera P. Deitchler, 88

(Sept. 6) PUEBLO, Colo. - Vera P. Deitchler, 88, died Friday, Sept. 1, in Pueblo, Colo. She was born June 22, 1912, near Hemingford. She and her husband, Harry, owned and operated United Rentals, which later became A-1 Rentals until selling the business and retiring in January of 1973.

She was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene. Her survivors include her two daughters, LaVora Bates of Aurora, Colo. and V. Marlene Laursen of Keller, Texas; sister, Marcene Stewart of Pueblo, Colo.; seven grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; three great great grandchildren; two step grandchildren; six step great-grandchildren and 12 step great-great-grandchildren. Her husband, four brothers and one step grandchild preceded her in death.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 6, at the First Church of the Nazarene. Burial was in the Mountain View Cemetery. A memorial has been established for the First Church of the Nazarene Memorial Fund or to the Gideons. Davis Mortuary is in charge of the arrangements.

George W. Fanning, 77

(Sept. 6) NYSSA, Ore. - George W. Fanning, 77, died Friday, Aug. 25, at a Boise hospital. He was born Oct. 2, 1922, in Alliance. His parents were Charlie and Delta Case Fanning.

He was raised and educated in Alliance. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corp. during World War II serving in the Aleutian Islands and also in the United States. Following his discharge he drove truck in the oil fields for Schlumberger Company in Colorado, Utah and New Mexico. He also worked road construction, building homes and churches.

He graduated from Chadron Teachers College. He married Yvonne Johnson on Jan. 18, 1964, at Twin Falls, Idaho. They moved to Nyssa, Ore. in 1964 when George accepted a teaching position at Nyssa High School. He retired in 1984. He was an active member of St. Bridget's Catholic Church and the American Legion.

His survivors include his wife Yvonne of Nyssa, Ore.; two daughters, Valerie Burns of Meridian, Idaho and Tonya Surface of Sacramento, Calif.; a son, Charlie Fanning of Boise, Idaho; nine grandchildren; one brother, Rusty Fanning of Alliance; three sisters, Doris Campbell of Alliance, Lavonna Porter of Ontario, Ore. and Aletha Bostron of Twin Falls, Idaho; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A son, his parents, a brother and two sisters preceded him in death. Vigil with Rosary was held at 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 28, at St. Bridget's Catholic Church in Nyssa. Burial with military honors was in the Hilltop Memorial Cemetery. Lienkaemper Chapels is in charge of the arrangements.

Amie L. Griffith-Lockman, 25

(Sept. 6) ALLIANCE - Amie L. Griffith-Lockman, 25, died Saturday, Sept. 2, at her home following a brief illness. She was born Dec. 14, 1974, in Colorado Springs, Colo. to Thomas and Patricia (Rinard) Griffith.

She graduated from Alliance High School in 1994. She had worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant in area nursing homes and with home health care. Her survivors include her daughter, Kaitlyn Marie Griffith of Alliance; father and step-mother, Thomas and Pauline Griffith of Colorado Springs, Colo.; sister, Jessica Greathouse of Alliance; two brothers, Justin Griffith of Omaha and Joseph Griffith of Alliance; grandparents, Elden Lewis of Alliance, Nellie Haywood of Canon City, Colo. and Bill and Mabel Rinard of Denver, Colo. Numerous uncles, aunts and cousins also survive her.

Her mother and grandmother, Joyce Lewis, preceded her in death. Funeral services will be Friday, Sept. 8, at 2 p.m. at the Bates-Gould Chapel. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for her daughter and may be sent to 804 West Tenth Street, Alliance, NE 69301. Memorials may also be given to St. Jude's Children's Hospital. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Rose B. Dyke

(Sept. 6) ALBANY, N.Y. - Services were held at Blessed Sacrament Church at Albany, N.Y., for Rose B. Dyke. Mrs. Dyke passed away Aug. 30, 2001, surrounded by her family.

She was the wife of the late Thomas J.B. Dyke. She was a graduate of Columbia University. She is survived by her daughters, Angel B. and Josephine B. Dyke of Albany and Theresa Wildy and husband Duane of Alliance, and Ann Marie Mastroianni and husband Anthony of New Canaan, N.Y.; grandchildren, Thomas and Cheryl Wildy of Omaha, and Dr. Kathryn and Randall Olson of Pittsburgh, Penn.; great-grandchildren, Elisa Rose and Alexa Marie Wildy of Omaha and Carl Robert Olson of Pittsburgh. She also is survived by niece Josephine R. Spinelli and husband Louis of Rochester, N.Y.; nephews, Vincent, Gerard and Peter Ligouri of Long Island, N.Y.
