Fretta A. Aldrich

Fretta M. Aldrich, age 92, of Oviedo, Florida formerly of Columbus, Nebraska died Sunday August 12, 2001 at the Columbus Community Hospital. Funeral Services will be held 10: 00 a.m. Saturday August 18, 2001 at the Baldwin-Fairchild Funeral Home in Oviedo, Florida with burial in the Chapel Hill Cemetery in Oviedo, Florida.

Visitation will be held in Columbus on Wednesday from 5: 00 p.m. - 8: 00 p.m. at McKown Funeral Home. A Prayer Service will be held at 6: 30 p.m. Wednesday at McKown Funeral Home with Reverend Gary Main officiating.

Fretta M. Aldrich was born January 10, 1909 in Marselles, Illinois to Homer and Nora (Pope) Donnelly. She married Harry Aldrich in Marselles, Illinois in 1924. The couple lived in Illinois until 1945 when they moved to Columbus, Nebraska. They owned and operated the Keen Korner Motel and the Elms Mobile Home Park in Columbus until retiring and moving to Oviedo, Florida.

She is survived by:

Fr. Flavius Czuba, O.F.M.

Fr. Flavius Czuba, O.F.M., of Indian River, MI, died Sunday April 15, 2001 at the Florida Hospital in Orlando, Florida. Funeral services will be held at 10: 30 am Thursday at St. Anthony Catholic Church (562 17th Avenue) in Columbus with Fr. Harry Speckman, O.F.M. officiating. Visitation will begin at 3: 00 pm Wednesday at McKown Funeral Home. There will be a Vigil service beginning at 7: 00 pm Wednesday at McKown Funeral Home. Visitation will continue on Thursday at St. Anthony Church from 9: 00 am until service time. Burial will be at the St. Bonaventure Cemetery.

Fr. Flavius was born Allen Czuba November 8, 1921 in Clarks, NE to Steve and Kathryn (Kush) Czuba. He moved to Fullerton, Nebraska in 1922 and then moved to Columbus, NE in 1926. He attended St. Anthony Elementary School in Columbus and in 1935 went to St. Joseph (Minor) Seminary in Westmont, Illinois. He entered the Franciscan Novititate in Teutopolis, Illinois in 1941. In August of 1942, Allen entered Our Lady of Angels Seminary in Cleveland, Ohio for two years of philosophy. In 1944 he entered the St. Joseph Theological Seminary in Teutopolis, Il. He was ordained at St. Francis Church in Teutopolis on December 19, 1947 and celebrated his first mass at St. Anthony Church in Columbus, NE on December 21, 1947.

His first assignment was chaplain of Prison Farm in Vandalia, Il. He then went to St. Stanislaus Church in Cleveland, Ohio where he taught at the grade and high school until 1952. He was associate pastor at Immaculate Conception Church in Omaha, NE from 1952-1954. He was the associate pastor and athletic director at St. Stanislaus Church in Cleveland, Ohio from 1954-1958. From 1958 to 1966, Fr. Flavius was guidance counselor and teacher at the St. Francis High School in Petoskey, Michigan and also Pastor of St. Nicholas Church in Larks Lake, Michigan from 1958-1971. During this same time Fr. was Pastor of Holy Cross Church in Cross Village, Michigan and St. Ignatius Church in Good Hart, Michigan. From 1971-1973 Fr. Flavius was Pastor for a short time at St. Anthony Church in Columbus, spent three months at the Catholic Theological Union as Pastor in Chicago, Il and the returned for a short time as Associate Pastor at St. Bonaventure Church and school in Columbus, NE.

From 1973 to 1977 Fr. Czuba was Pastor of St. James Church in Riverton, Il and also Pastor of St. Joseph's Church in Buffalo, Il. While at St. Joseph's Church a new church and hall were built. He then came back to Columbus, NE and became Pastor of St. Bonaventure Church and School from 1977-1985. In 1985 he became Pastor of St. Philip Church in Stone Lake, WI until 1987. He then traveled to Washburn, WI where he was Pastor of St. Louis Church with a Mission at Cornucopia, WI until 1993.

Since 1993, Fr. Flavius has been Senior Associate Pastor at the Cross of the Woods Church in Indian River, MI, the home of the world's largest Crucifix.

Fr. Flavius celebrated his 50th Jubilee as a Priest on September 7, 1997 at the Cross of the Woods Church in Indian River, MI and again on September 21, 1997 at his home Parish, St. Anthony's Church in Columbus with a third celebration at St. Bonaventure Church in Columbus where he had been the Pastor for eight years.

Elon W. Brewer

Elon W. Brewer, age 85, of Columbus died Monday April 9, 2001 at the Edgewood Vista in Columbus. A Memorial Service will be held at a later date. Visitation is Tuesday April 10, 2001 from 3: 00 p.m. until 8: 00 p.m. at McKown Funeral Home in Columbus. Burial will be at the Roselawn Memorial Cemetery in Columbus.

Elon W. Brewer was born November 21, 1915 in Spalding, Nebraska to Daniel and Bessie (Wanker) Brewer. On July 16, 1938 he was united in marriage to Erma Rae Crowe in Schuyler, Nebraska. Elon served in the U.S. Army during World War II from August 1945 to September 1946. The couple lived in Columbus where he worked for Beatrice Foods, Henke Manufacturing, and also owned and operated Elon's Drive Inn. Elon enjoyed collecting small gas engines and was a member of the Antique Tractor and Small Gas Engine Club.

Elaine Borchers

Elaine Borchers, 81, of Grand Island, formerly of Columbus, died Tuesday, December 4, 2001 at Lakeview Nursing Home in Grand Island. Funeral services are 10: 30 a.m. The Rev. Timothy White will officiate. Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Columbus. Visitation will also be Thursday from 9: 30 a.m. until service time at the church. Burial will be in the Columbus Cemetery.

Elaine was born May 29, 1920 on a rural Bellwood, Nebraska farm to B.R. and Fern (McClotchey) Creech. She attended school in rural Bellwood and graduated from Octavia High School. Following high school she baby sat and worked as a hired girl for several area families. She then worked at Woolworths Dime Store in Columbus.
Elaine married George Borchers June 30, 1951 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Columbus.
She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church for 60 years where she taught Sunday School for many years. She was a member of the Trinity Circle and Quilters Ladies. Along with her husband she cleaned Trinity Lutheran Church for 10 years. She enjoyed flowers, gardening and spending time with her family.

Vera R. Brand

Vera R. Brand, age 72, of Silver Creek, Nebraska died Wednesday December 5, 2001 at Lincoln LGH West in Lincoln, Nebraska. Funeral Services are 10: 30 a.m. Friday December 5, 2001 at the United Methodist Church in Silver Creek with Reverend Bev Minor officiating. Burial will be in the Silver Creek Cemetery. Visitation is 4: 00 p.m. - 8: 00 p.m. Thursday at McKown Funeral Home in Silver Creek. Visitation will continue on Friday from 9: 30 a.m. until service time at the church.

Vera R. Brand was born April 25, 1929 in Gage County, NE to John & Mabel (Van Winkle) Andrews. She married Charles Brand on June 30, 1947 in Marysville, KS. She lived all of her married life in Silver Creek. She worked at Dale Electronics in Columbus for 17 years before owning and operating Vera's Cafe in Silver Creek until 1994 when she sold the business due to illness. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Silver Creek, the United Methodist Women, and the American Legion Auxiliary.

David Jacobson

David C. Jacobson, age 27, of Columbus, Nebraska died Tuesday; July 3, 2001 at the Columbus Community Hospital. Funeral Services will be 10: 30 a.m. Friday; July 6, 2001 at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church in Columbus with the Reverands Tom Weisbecker, Steve Emmanuel and Dorsie Ivy officiating. Burial will be in the Columbus Cemetery. Visitation is from 4: 00 p.m. until 9: 00 p.m. Thursday and from 8: 00 a.m. until 10: 00 a.m. Friday at McKown Funeral Home in Columbus.

David was born February 5, 1974 in Columbus, Nebraska to David & Betty (Walker) Jacobson. He attended District #84 Grade School and Lakeview High School. He married Kristin Wolfgram on August 16, 1996 in Columbus, Nebraska. David worked for Island Supply Welding, Leffers Electric, Dick's Electric in Blair and was currently working for Marley's Electric in Columbus. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, classic cars and Jimmy Buffet music. He was a loving father and enjoyed spending time with his family.

Violinda Ebner

Violinda M. Ebner, age 96, of Columbus died Sunday; June 17, 2001 at David Place in David City, Nebraska. Funeral services are 10: 30 am Wednesday, June 20, 2001 at St. Isidore Catholic Church in Columbus. The Rev. Joseph Miksch will officiate. Burial will be in the St. Bonaventure Cemetery. Visitation is Tuesday 3-5 pm at the McKown Funeral Home and after 6: 00 pm at the church. a vigil will be held at 7: 00 pm also at the church. Visitation will continue Wednesday morning from 8: 00-10: 00 am at the funeral home.

Violinda was born July 19, 1904 in Platte County to Adolph & Mary (Schumacher) Liebig. She graduated from St. Joseph High School in Platte Center in 1923. She then graduated from Kearney State Teachers College. She taught school in rural Platte County Schools. She married William C. Ebner September 2, 1925 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Platte Center.
She was an active mermber of St. Isidore Catholic Church. She was a member of Christian Mothers, taught CCD for 12 years active in the quilting and sewing circles.

She is survived by:

Reverend Will Sanborn officiating. Burial will be in the Roselawn Memorial Cemetery in Columbus. Visitation is from
3: 00 p.m. - 8: 00 p.m. Tuesday and on Wednesday from 8: 00 a.m. until service time all at McKown Funeral Home.

JoAnn Johnson was born May 9, 1929 in Milford, NE to Viola Wozny. She graduated from Kramer High School in Columbus in 1948. After her schooling she worked for Consumer Public Power. She married Loren Johnson on September 20, 1952 in Columbus. The couple lived in Omaha where she worked as a secretary for Westinghouse Electric from 1952-1958. She returned to Columbus where she was a secretary for Scheidegger Engineering until retiring. She was a life member of the P.T.A. and was active in Girl Scouts.

Larry A. Jarecke

Larry A. Jarecke, 65, of Columbus died Saturday, July 21 at Immanuel Medical Center in Omaha. Funeral services are 10: 00 am Wednesday, July 25 at St. Isidore Catholic Church in Columbus with the Rev. Joseph A. Miksch officiating. Visitation will be on Tuesday at McKown Funeral Home from 3: 00-8: 00 pm with a Vigil service to be held at 7: 00 pm. Visitation will continue on Wednesday from 8-9: 30 am at McKown Funeral Home. Burial will be at All Saints Cemetery in Columbus with Military Honors by Hartman Post #84 American Legion Honor Guard.

Larry was born in Fullerton, Nebraska to Harry & Minnie (Stopak) Jarecke on September 8, 1935. He graduated from Fullerton High School in 1953. He served in the US Army during the Korean War. He married Jane Shanahan on April 27, 1963 in Dubuque, Iowa. He worked for GTE for 36 years in various communities in Iowa and Nebraska. He has lived in Columbus since 1973. Larry retired in 1994. He was a member of St. Isidore Catholic Church and Holy Name Society. He was a member of The Knights of Columbus Council #938 where he served as the Grand Knight. He was also a member of the Eagles Club and the VFW Post #3704 in Columbus. Larry continued to work part time at the Columbian Village. Larry enjoyed spending time with his family. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and woodworking.
