Joseph Timms

Joseph Timms, age 74, of Columbus, Nebraska died Tuesday September 2, 2003 at the Columbus Community Hospital. Funeral services are 10: 00 a.m. Saturday at the McKown Funeral Home in Columbus. The Rev. Joseph Miksch will officiate. Visitation is Saturday from 8-10 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in David City.

Joseph William Timms was born March 20, 1929 in David City, Nebraska to James Brittain and Helen Barbara (Kozisek) Timms. He grew up on a farm in the David City area where he attended public school. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War from July 12, 1952 until March 24, 1954. Joe embraced hard work. He worked as a painter for many years. Riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle was his passion. He was the oldest living member of the American Veterans Motorcycle Club. He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting and fishing.

Arnold "Buster" Langan

Arnold Langan, age 86, of Columbus died Sunday; September 28, 2003 at the Columbus Community Hospital. Funeral Services are 10: 30 a.m. Wednesday; October 1, 2003 at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church. The Rev. Tom Weisbecker will officiate. Burial with military honors by American Legion Hartman Post #84 Honor Guard will be at the Ss. Patrick/Joseph Cemetery in Platte Center. Visitation will be after 5: 00 p.m. on Tuesday at the church. A vigil will be held at 6: 30 p.m. Tuesday evening also at the church. Visitation will continue Wednesday morning 9: 30 a.m. until service time at the church.

Arnold "Buster" Langan was born August 27, 1917 in Platte Center, Nebraska to Edward and Minnie (Kamm) Langan. He received his education in Platte Center. He married Stella Pachunka on November 11, 1939 at St. Bonaventure Church in Columbus. He served in the Unites States Navy during WWII from November 13, 1943 until November 22, 1945. He was employed by the Union Pacific Railroad for forty years until his retirement. The couple lived in Platte Center and Columbus before moving to Omaha in 1960. In 1984 they returned to Columbus.

Loraine "Ginger" E. Bergman

Loraine "Ginger" E. Bergman, 78, of Columbus died Friday September 12, 2003 at Columbus Community Hospital. Services are 11: 00 am Tuesday September 16 at McKown Funeral Home with Pastors Ken and Brant Taylor officiating. Visitation is on Monday from 3-6 pm at McKown Funeral Home. Inurnment is in Columbus Cemetery.

Loraine "Ginger" Emily Bergman was born May 11, 1925 in Clarkson, NE to Joseph and Emma (Molacek) Janda. She grew up in Clarkson and in Kansas where she graduated from high school. After high school she mostly lived in Columbus. She married Ernest Reece Bergman on July 2, 1948 in Albion. She worked for a short time at Tooley Drug before devoting her life to being a housewife, mother, and spending a lot of time caring for her grandchildren. Ginger loved to go shopping, play cards. and listening to polka music on the radio every Sunday morning. She was a long time member of the Eagles Auxiliary.

She is survived by two children; Richard Bergman of Columbus and Pegg Bergman of Northridge, CA, one brother: Milo Janda of Denver, CO, one sister; Erma Hahn of Alliance, NE, three grandchildren; Troy (Laura) Bergman of Columbus, Todd (Vicki) Bergman of Denver, CO, and Jaime Petersen of Northridge, CA, and three great-grandchildren; Trevor, Hunter, and Aleesha Bergman all of Denver, CO.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother; Joe Janda and one sister.

Agnes Fix

Agnes Fix, age 75, of Columbus died Tuesday; November 5, 2003 at Bryan LGH East in Lincoln. Funeral services are 10: 30 a.m. Monday at St. Bonaventure Church in Columbus. Visitation is Sunday 3-6 p.m. with a 5: 00 p.m. vigil service at McKown Funeral Home. Visitation will continue Monday morning 8: 00 a.m. until 10: 00 a.m. Burial will be in the All Saints Cemetery.

Agnes Fix was born July 20, 1926 in Columbus to Felix and Winifred (Moyer) Fix. She was raised in Columbus where she received her elementary education at St. Bonaventure Grade School and graduated from Kramer High School in 1944.On July 1, 1944 she married Robert C. Fix in Maryland. She traveled with her husband during his military career and returned to Columbus in 1956. Agnes worked in the family business, Felix Fix Shoe Repair for many years. She was a member of St. Bonaventure Church where she maintained her Holy Hour for 25 years and a member of Legion of Mary.

Agnes is survived by 1 daughter Carolyn Fehringer of Lincoln; 1 sister Irma and her husband Cy Janicek of Columbus; three grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, 1 daughter: Deborah Marie Brunken, 1 brother Felix Fix Jr.

Arthur Pillen

Arthur Pillen, 71, of Platte Center died Friday, November 28, 2003 at Columbus Community Hospital. Funeral services are 10: 00 am Monday, December 1, 2003 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Platte Center with the Rev. Rod Kneifl officiating. Visitation begins on Sunday after 5 pm at St. Joseph's Church in Platte Center. There will be a Vigil service at 7: 00 pm Sunday, also at the church. Visitation continues Monday morning from 9 am until service time at the church. Interment is in the Ss. Patrick/Joseph Cemetery in rural Platte Center with military honors by American Legion Post #283.

Arthur Pillen was born June 15, 1932 in Platte County to Henry and Gunda (Melcher) Pillen. He graduated from Platte Center High School in 1950. Art married Elverine Foltz on October 7, 1953 at St. Joseph's Church in Platte Center. Art served in the US Army during the Korean War. He returned to the Platte Center area where he farmed and fed livestock. He enjoyed football games and playing cards. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church where he served on the school board, church council, ushered, and was also a cantor. He was a member of American Legion Post #283 and the Farm & Home CO-OP Board.

Bernie Johansen

Bernard "Bernie" Johansen died Saturday, November 8, 2003 at his home in Columbus. Funeral services are 11: 30 am Tuesday, November 11, 2003 at St. Isidore Catholic Church in Columbus with the Rev. Joseph A. Miksch officiating. Visitation will begin on Monday after 5: 00 pm at St. Isidore Church with a Vigil service at 7: 00 pm, also at the Church. Interment is in All Saints Cemetery.

Bernard Groomes Johansen was born March 21, 1952 in Columbus to George W. and Etta Garnett (Spaulding) Johansen, Sr. He grew up in Columbus and graduated from Columbus High School in 1970. He married Sandra Lee Schuurmans on December 26, 1992. Bernie was part owner of Johansen Construction, worked for Kaneb Pipeline for a few years, and has owned Turning Point gas station since 1996. He loved classic cars, boating, spending time with his family, traveling, and his two dogs Butch and Sonny. Bernie was a member of many community organizations and clubs including the Optimist Club in Columbus. He had a wonderful sense of humor and was always joking and smiling.

He is survived by: Wife Sandra Johansen of Columbus, Son Matt (Kristy) Spawn of Columbus, Daughter Michelle (Brad) Ternus of Monroe and their daughter Madison, Son Steve Spawn of Columbus, Daughter Sarah Johansen of Columbus, Mother Garnett Johansen of Columbus, Brother Buster Johansen of Fort Pierce, Florida, and Sister Candy Johansen of Rancho Mirage, CA, and several nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by: Father George Johansen and Brother Edward Johansen

Erma A. Hajek

Erma A. Hajek of Columbus died Wednesday, November 5, 2003 at her home. Funeral services are 10: 00 am Saturday, November 8, at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Columbus with the Rev. Del Lape officiating. Visitation will be on Friday from 3-5 pm at McKown Funeral Home and after 6 pm at St. Anthony's. There will be a Vigil service Friday at 7: 00 pm, also at St. Anthony's. Visitation continues Saturday morning from 8-9: 30 am at McKown Funeral Home Interment is in St. Bonaventure Cemetery.

Erma Hajek was born April 21, 1923 in Stanton County, Nebraska to Emil & Bessie (Podany) Hajek. She grew up in Stanton County and graduated from Clarkson High School. She went on and graduated from Wayne State Teachers College in 1942. She taught grade school for two years. She married Leander "Lee" Hajek on August 22, 1946 at St. Cyril & Methodius Church in Clarkson. They lived on a farm north of Clarkson for 15 years before moving to Columbus. In Columbus she went to work for Dale Electronics for 26 years. She was an avid reader and a published author. Erma volunteered at the Hospital Gift Shop and for Meals on Wheels. She loved her grandchildren and grandbabies and was a devoted catholic member of St. Anthony's Church. She enjoyed watching football, dancing, working outdoors, birds, traveling and working on the computer.

She is survived by:

Frank Jelinek

Frank Jelinek, age 89, of Columbus, Nebraska died Tuesday November 25, 2003 at the Beverly Health Care in Columbus. Funeral Services are 10: 30 a.m. Saturday November 29, 2003 at the McKown Funeral Home with Reverend M. Wendell Davis officiating. Burial is in the Columbus Cemetery. Visitation is 4: 00 p.m. - 8: 00 p.m. Friday and 9: 30 a.m. - 10: 30 a.m. Saturday at McKown Funeral Home.

Frank Jelinek, Jr. was born May 14, 1914 in Stanton County to Frank D. and Rosie (Wasko) Jelinek. He attended District #30 School in rural Clarkson. On May 10, 1944 he was united in marriage to Mildred A. Kozisek in Schuyler, Nebraska. The couple farmed and were quite involved in the cattle business, including raising Pinzgauer cattle on a farm south of Clarkson, Nebraska until 1975. In 1975 they moved to Columbus and Frank went to work for Fleischer Manufacturing in the sub-assembly department. From 1980 - 1998 he worked part-time at the Columbus Sales Pavillion. He loved gardening and raised two large gardens for many years. He enjoyed listening to the radio especially to Czech music programs, farm market and weather reports.

Philip Meade Austin

Philip Meade Austin, 8 days, of Olathe, Kansas died Wednesday, November 19, 2003 at Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri. Funeral services are 9: 30 am Saturday, November 22 at St. Isidore Catholic Church with the Rev. Joseph A. Miksch officiating. Burial will be in the St. Bonaventure Cemetery. Visitation is 5: 00 p.m. - 8: 00 p.m. Friday and 8: 00 a.m. - 9: 00 a.m. Saturday at McKown Funeral Home in Columbus.

Philip Meade Austin was born November 11, 2003 at Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri to Brian and Brenda (Dohmen) Austin. Philip passed away due to complications from a congenital diaphragmatic hernia.

Kenneth G. Mimick, 51, of Columbus died Wednesday, November 19, 2003 at Columbus Community Hospital. Services are 10: 30 am Friday at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Columbus with the Rev. Del Lape and Rev. Joseph A. Miksch officiating. Visitation is Thursday from 5-8 pm at McKown Funeral Home with a Vigil Service at 7: 30 pm, also at the funeral Home. Visitation continues on Friday from 8-10 am at the funeral home. Interment is in St. Bonaventure Cemetery with Military Honors by Hartman Post #84 American Legion Honor Guard.

Kenneth G. Mimick was born May 12, 1952 to Adam and Helen (Gonka) Mimick. He attended St. Anthony School and graduated from Columbus High in 1970. In 1972 he entered the US Army. Following his discharge in 1974 he returned to Columbus where he worked various jobs including working for D & L. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and was a member of the VFW.
