Pauline "Polly" Determan

Pauline "Polly" Determan, age 89, of Columbus, Nebraska died Saturday November 8, 2003 at the Creighton Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska. Funeral Services are 10: 30 a.m. Wednesday November 12, 2003 at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church in Columbus with Reverend Mark Bridgman officiating. Burial is in the St. Bonaventure Cemetery. Visitation will be 3: 00 p.m. - 8: 00 p.m. Tuesday with a 4: 00 p.m. Rosary and a 7: 00 p.m. Vigil Service at McKown Funeral Home. Visitation will continue on Wednesday morning from 8: 00 a.m. - 10: 00 a.m. also at the funeral home.

Pauline "Polly" Determan was born August 30, 1914 in Fordyce, Nebraska to Joseph and Matilda (Kast) Goeden. She was married to Ben H. Determan on June 1, 1933 at St. John's Catholic Church in Paxton, South Dakota. The couple moved from Norfolk, Nebraska to Columbus in 1962. Polly was a member of St. Bonaventure Church for over 40 years where she was active with the Catholic Daughters of America and Perpetual Adoration. She also belonged to a garden club, bridge clubs and was a hospital volunteer. Her hobbies included golf, bowling, bridge, traveling and baking . She also was an avid sports fan.

Irene Ritchie

Irene Ritchie, age 84, of Columbus, Nebraska died Saturday November 8, 2003 at the Hillcrest Hospital in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Funeral Services are 10: 30 am Saturday, November 15, 2003 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Columbus with the Rev. Richard Bringewatt officiating. Visitation is on Friday from 4-7 pm at McKown Funeral Home and continues on Saturday from 9: 30 am until service time at the Church. There will be a 10: 15 am family prayer service on Saturday, also at the church. Interment is in Columbus Cemetery.

Irene Ritchie was born September 15, 1919 in Seward County, Nebraska to George and Eleanor (Sheeper) Richters. She attended District #66 School in Seward County. She married William Ritchie on June 11, 1946 in Baltimore, Maryland. The couple moved to Columbus in 1960. Irene was a homemaker and worked for Meadow Gold for 5 years. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Evening Guild, Christian Women's Club, Ladies Auxiliary, A.A.R.P.. She enjoyed gardening and cooking.

Ted Swirczek, Sr.

Thaddeus "Ted" B. Swirczek, Sr., 86, of Columbus died Thursday, November 13, 2003 at Columbus Community Hospital. Funeral services are 10: 30 a.m. Monday; November 17, 2003 at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Columbus. The Rev. Del Lape will officiate. Burial will be in the St. Bonaventure Cemetery. Visitation is Sunday after 4: 00 p.m. at the funeral home. There will be a Vigil service at 7: 00 pm Sunday, also at the funeral home. Visitation continues Monday morning from 8-10 at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the donors choice.

Ted B. Swirczek was born April 30, 1917 in Fullerton, Nebraska to Joseph and Anna (Warholoski-Hebda) Swirczek. He grew up in Fullerton and Columbus where he graduated from Kramer High School in 1935. While in high school, he was a member of the National Honor Society. He married Genevieve Jarosz on June 24, 1941 at St. Anthonys Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids, Nebraska. Ted was the owner and operator of Ted's Tavern "Ted's Tea Room". He was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church, Holy Name Society, Knights of Columbus-Council #938 and the Eagles Club. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, horse racing and playing cards.

Helen Shefcyk

Helen Shefcyk, 93, of Columbus died Wednesday, April 7, 2004 at the Village Manor Living Center in Lincoln. Funeral services are 10: 30 am Monday, April 12 at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church in Columbus with the Rev. Tom Weisbecker officiating. Visitation is on Sunday from 4-7 pm at McKown Funeral Home with a Vigil service to begin at 7 pm Sunday, also at the funeral home. Visitation continues Monday morning from 8-10 am at McKown Funeral Home. Interment is in St. Bonaventure Cemetery.

Helen A. Shefcyk was born July 17, 1910 in Polk County to Charles and Mary (Gonka) Iwan. She grew up in Polk County where she also attended schools. Helen married Leo Shefcyk on June 21, 1938 at St. Mary's Church-Pilsno. She was primarily a housewife and mother before going to work cooking for St. Bonaventure School until she retired. She enjoyed needlework, gardening, and canning.

Hazel E. Olcott

Hazel E. Olcott, age 86, of Columbus, Nebraska died Wednesday April 28, 2004 at the Columbus Community Hospital. Funeral Services are 11: 00 a.m. Monday May 3, 2004 at McKown Funeral Home in Columbus with Reverend Bill Ritter officiating. Burial is in the Bellwood Cemetery. Visitation is 4: 00 p.m. - 8: 00 p.m. Sunday and 10: 00 a.m. - 11: 00 a.m. Monday at McKown Funeral Home. Memorials may be directed to Donors Choice.

Hazel Olcott was born January 20, 1918 in Omaha, Nebraska to Frank and Liz (Petersen) Andersen. She married Harley L. Olcott on May 5, 1940 in Papillion, Nebraska. The couple lived in Omaha before moving to Columbus in the 1940's. Hazel owned and operated the 7-Mile Inn south of Columbus until her retirement in 1992. She was a member of the Bellwood Legion Auxiliary. Hazel enjoyed gardening and going to the horse races and casinos.

Fern Cranmore

Fern Uvene Cranmore, 89, formerly of Columbus, died Sunday April 25, 2004 at the Labette County Medical Center in Parsons, Kansas. Services are 10: 30 am on Thursday, April 29, 2004 at McKown Funeral Home in Columbus with the Rev. Dr. Paul Rowoldt officiating. Visitation is on Wednesday from 4-8 pm at McKown Funeral Home and continues Thursday morning from 9: 30 until service time. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, TN.

Fern Uvene Cranmore was born September 10, 1914 in Memphis, Texas to Oliver Lee and Rosa Valeria (Robert) Malloy. She moved to Colorado where she attended schools. Fern married Clifford Cranmore on December 16, 1930 in Trinidad, Colorado. They lived on a ranch in Western Nebraska and in Texas before returning to Nebraska in 1952, living in Cedar Rapids, Norfolk, and Columbus. Fern loved gardening, flowers, cooking, and especially her children and grandchildren.

She is survived by one son and two daughters, Robert "Dwane" (Marlene) Cranmore of Rapid City, SD, Betty (Jim) Woods of Parsons, KS, and Lois (Gerald) Demuth of Fredericksburg, VA; two sisters, Billie (Ray) Fuller and Eva Robison of Amarillo, TX, and five grandchildren; Ronald Greek, Jr., Robert Cranmore, Jr., Pamela Demuth-Duin, Gerald Demuth II, and Julie Demuth-Drobot, and one step-granddaughter, Cathy Classen. Mrs. Cranmore is also survived by eight great-grandchildren; Damara, Paige, Tynan, and Tristan Duin, Matthew, Zackery, and Paiglyn Cranmore, and Danny Calvert, and two "adopted" great-grandchildren, Mark and Eric Calvert.

She is preceded in death by her husband, two sons Kenneth and Marvin, two granddaughters, Vicki Greek-Calvert, and Tina Greek; five sisters and two brothers.

Edward J. Coan

Edward J. Coan, age 85 of Columbus died Friday; April 16, 2004 at the Beverly Health Care in Columbus. Funeral Services are 10: 30 a.m. Tuesday April 20, 2004 at St. Isidore Catholic Church in Columbus with the Reverend Joseph A. Miksch officiating. Burial will be in the St. Bonaventure Cemetery with military honors by the Monroe American Legion Swanson Post #322 Honor Guard. Visitation is 3: 00 p.m. - 8: 00 p.m. Monday with an 8: 00 p.m. Vigil Service at McKown Funeral Home. Visitation will continue Tuesday morning from 8: 00 a.m. - 10: 00 a.m. also at the funeral home.

Edward John Coan was born November 21, 1918 in St. Edward, Nebraska to Patrick and Eva (Sumovich) Coan. He received his education in Genoa where he grew up. On August 21, 1942 he entered the United States Army and served in the Signal Corp in Africa and Italy until October 12, 1945. He married Frances "Jeannie" Zimmerman on April 15, 1950 in St. Edward, Nebraska. Ed farmed in the Oconee area. From 1967-1983 he worked at the Alfalfa Mill in Monroe. He also worked part time at Husker Co-op in Columbus. Ed was an active member of St. Isidore Church where he served as head usher for many years. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Holy Name, American Legion Swanson Post #322 and V.F.W. #3704.

He is survived by:

Helen M. Torczon, age 77 of rural Columbus died Sunday; January 11, 2004 at the Columbus Community Hospital. Funeral services are 10: 30 a.m. Thursday; January 15, 2004 at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Duncan. The Rev. Dave Korth will officiate. Visitation will be Wednesday 4-8 p.m. at the McKown Funeral Home. A vigil will be held at 7: 00 p.m. at the McKown Funeral Home in Columbus. Visitation will continue Thursday morning 9: 30 a.m. until service time at the church. Burial will be in the St. Bonaventure Cemetery in Columbus.

Helen Marie Torczon was born April 16, 1926 in Tarnov, Nebraska to Albert A. and Victoria (Sutko) Staroscik. She graduated from Kramer High School in Columbus in 1943. She married Kenneth J. Torczon on May 8, 1952 At St. Bonaventure Church in Columbus. Helen worked for many years at Becton-Dickinson and enjoyed volunteering at various nursing homes. Her greatest enjoyment was spending time with her family and friends. She enjoyed flowers, gardening, traveling and Nebraska football. She was a member of St. Stanislaus Church, St. Ann's Sodality, VFW Auxiliary, Columbus Community Hospital Auxiliary, B-D Alumni and Catholic Daughters of America.

Hazel "Maxine" Blezek

Hazel "Maxine" Blezek, age 93, of Columbus, Nebraska died Sunday January 11, 2004 at her home. Funeral Services are 10: 30 a.m. Thursday January 15, 2004 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Columbus with Reverend Douglas Zurek officiating. Visitation is 9: 30 a.m. - 10: 30 a.m. Thursday with a 10: 15 a.m. Family Prayer Service all at the church. Graveside Services will be held 1: 30 p.m. Thursday at the Stanton Cemetery in Stanton, Nebraska.

Hazel "Maxine" Blezek was born January 21, 1910 in rural Stanton, Nebraska to Clarence E. and Mary Nancy (Purdy) Everson. She attended a country school near Stanton and high school in St. Charles, South Dakota where her father had a farm. She received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education and English from Wayne State College. She taught school in District #83 south of Stanton and later in Wolbach, Nebraska. She was married to John W. Blezek on June 20, 1941 at her parents home south of Stanton. To this union two sons, John and Ronald were born. The couple lived in Fort Worth, Texas while John was stationed in the U.S. Army/Air Force during WWII. Following his discharge they moved back to Nebraska. Maxine and John taught in several schools in Nebraska until retiring in Sidney, Nebraska in 1971. She was a member of the Eastern Star in Sidney and Wayne State Alumni Association.

She is survived by:
