Etta K. Jessup

Etta K. Jessup, age 90, of Columbus, Nebraska died Tuesday February 16, 2004 at the Columbus Community Hospital. A Memorial Service will be held at a later date in Colorado.

Etta Katherine Jessup was born March 27, 1913 in Carbondale, Colorado. She graduated from Carbondale High School and attended the University of Northern Colorado for one year. In 1936 she was united in marriage to Frank Wald "Bill" Jessup.

Leo J. Dowd

Leo J. Dowd, age 93, of Columbus, Nebraska died Wednesday; February 11, 2004 at his home. Funeral Services are 10: 30 a.m. Monday; February 16, 2004 at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church in Columbus with Reverend Tom Weisbecker officiating. The Holy Rosary will be said 3: 00 p.m. Sunday at McKown Funeral Home. Visitation is from 6: 30 p.m. - 9: 00 p.m. Sunday with a 7: 30 p.m. Vigil Service at St. Bonaventure Church. Visitation continues Monday morning from 9: 30 a.m. - 10: 30 a.m. also at the church. Burial is in the St. Bonaventure Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the St. Bonaventure Building Fund, Columbus Community Hospital Foundation or donors choice.

Leo J. Dowd was born April 1919, 1910 in Wolbach, Nebraska to John Henry and Rose (McNally) Dowd. In 1939 he was united in marriage to Eileen P. O'Malley in O'Neill, Nebraska. Mr. Dowd began his business career in 1932. He was the founder of Dowd Oil Company in Schuyler and Columbus, Dowd Grain Company of Aurora and O'Neill, Dowd & Stolz Transfer, Inc. of Norfolk, Dowd and Schutt Gravel Company of Schuyler, Dowd Industries of Columbus, and O'Neill Farms in Holt County. Dowd was president of St. Marys Hospital in 1972 and was instrumental in bringing about the merger with Behlen Hospital to form what is now Columbus Community Hospital.

Mr. Dowd volunteered for many community organizations including serving as president of the Platte College Foundation; director of the executive board of the Mid-American Boy Scouts; member of the 21st District Court Judicial Nominating Commission; and president of Industries, Inc., a community corporation that made land available to new industry. He served as a trustee of St. Bonaventure Parish, served as chairman of the Building Committee for the new St. Bonaventure School Library, served three terms as Grand Knight for the Knights of Columbus Council at Schuyler, served one year as state membership chairman for the Knights of Columbus, served as president and remained as chairman emeritus of the Omaha Archdiocesan Educational Foundation, and was a member of the Archbishop's Committee for Educational Development.

Deanna Carman

Deanna Carman, age 61, of Columbus, Nebraska died Wednesday February 18, 2004 at her home after a courageous battle with Breast Cancer. Funeral Services are 10: 30 am Monday, February 23 at St. Anthony Catholic Church. Visitation is from 3-7 pm Sunday at McKown Funeral Home with a Vigil Service at 7 pm, also at the funeral home. Visitation will continue on Monday from 8-10 am at McKown Funeral Home. Interment will be in St. Lawrence Cemetery in Silver Creek. There will be a lunch served at the Eagles Club, 3205 12th St., immediately following the services at the church. Memorials are suggested to the wishes of the family.

Deanna Sue Carman was born December 23, 1942 in Genoa to Noble and Josephine (Cyza) Davis. She grew up in Columbus where she attended schools before moving to Silver Creek. She worked for Behlen Manufacturing for 19 years. She moved to Columbus six years ago. She was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church, Eagles Auxiliary where she was currently Grand Mother, WDS Support Group, Christian Women, and Breast Cancer Support Groups. She enjoyed shopping, collecting angels, caring for the elderly, and spending time with her family.

She is survived by:

June M. Rezac

June M. Rezac, age 76, of Madison, Nebraska formerly of Columbus died Tuesday April 6, 2004 at the Countryside Home in Madison. Funeral Services are 10: 30 a.m. Friday April 9, 2004 at the First United Methodist Church in Columbus with Reverend Bill Ritter officiating. Burial is in the Columbus Cemetery. Visitation is 4: 00 p.m. - 8: 00 p.m. Thursday at McKown Funeral Home and from 9: 30 a.m. - 10: 30 a.m. Friday at the Church.

June M. Rezac was born June 14, 1927 in Lincoln, NE., to Fred & Anna (Nordgren) Anderson. She graduated from Newman Grove High School in 1945. June married Leonard Rezac on June 18, 1945 in Belleville Kansas. They later moved to Columbus where she worked at St. Mary's Hospital, Becton-Dickinson, & Dale Electronics, before opening Sunset Antiques in Columbus for 5 years, she also did Antique Shows in various states for 14 years.
June worked as a volunteer for the Commodites Program. June was a member of the First United Methodist Church and was also a member of the United Methodist Women. She enjoyed collecting antiques, dolls, quilting & embroidering. She also was a member of the Country Family Band where she played the piano.

Merlene R. Ek

Merlene R. Ek, age 68 of Columbus, died Friday; June 4, 2004 at the Immanuel Medical Center in Omaha. Funeral services are10: 30 a.m. Monday; June 7, 2004 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Columbus. The Rev. Douglas Zurek will officiate. Visitation is Sunday 4-8 p.m. at the McKown Funeral Home and Monday 9: 30 a.m. until service time at the church. Burial will be in the Columbus Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Trinity Lutheran Church and the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

Merlene Rae Ek was born March 13, 1936 in Laurel, Nebraska to Raymond C. and Irma Louise (Clausen) Pehrson. She graduated from Laurel High School in 1953. She moved to Omaha and was united in marriage to Donald E. Ek on December 4, 1964 in Papillion, Nebraska. The couple lived in Omaha and North Platte before moving to Columbus in 1971. Merlene worked for Region IV North Star Services. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, taught Sunday School, and the Breast Cancer Support Group.

Anna Maria Hunter

Anna Maria Hunter, 61, of Columbus died Sunday, May 23, 2004 at her home in Columbus. Services are 10: 00 am Wednesday at McKown Funeral Home with the Rev. Bill Bond officiating. Visitation is on Wednesday from 9 am until service time. Interment is in the Grand Island Cemetery.

Anna Maria Hunter was born September 21, 1942 in Grand Island, Nebraska to Frank & Evelyn ( ) Dunham. She received her education in Grand Island and graduated from Grand Island High in 1960. She married Cornell Sober Jr. on December 31, 1960 in Grand Island. She received her Associated Degree from Central Community College-Platte Campus and earned her Bachelors Degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She moved to Columbus in the 1960's. Along with raising her family she sold insurance in the Columbus area for several years. She enjoyed cats, reading and music.

She is survived by two daughters; Sabra (Rick) Schmidt of Monroe & Cara (fiance' Mike Emerson) Urkoski of Monroe, five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

She is preceded in death by her parents and her husband Cornell Sober, Jr.

Eugene C. "Doc" Walter

Eugene C. "Doc" Walter, age 87, of Columbus died Friday, May 21, 2004 at Columbus Community Hospital. Memorial Services are 11: 00 a.m. Tuesday May 25, 2004 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Columbus with Reverend Richard Bringewatt and Reverend Roland Jank officiating. Military Honors will be conducted by Hartman Post #84 American Legion Honor Guard. The family will receive friends from 6: 00 p.m. - 8: 00 p.m. Monday at McKown Funeral Home. A Private Family Graveside Service will be held in the Humphrey Cemetery.

Eugene C. Walter was born November 3, 1916 in Humphrey, Nebraska to Edward and Minnie (Schroeder) Walter. He graduated from Humphrey High School in 1934 and attended Wayne State Teachers College and the University of Nebraska graduating in 1942 with a Bachelor of Science and D.D.S. degree. After graduation, he joined the Navy and served three years with a Medical Company of the 2nd Marine Division in the Pacific area. His Unit received the Presidential Unit Citation during the battle at Tarawa. Upon his return to the U.S., he served at the Naval Pre-Flight School and Naval Air Station in Iowa. On June 3, 1946 he received a honorable discharge and began his dental practice in Columbus. In 1950 he was called to active duty during the Korean War. His duty included service at the Naval Gun Factory, Washington D.C., Naval Hospital, Bethesda, Maryland and foreign duty aboard the cruiser New Port News. He resumed his practice in 1954. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Hartman Post #84 American Legion, V.F.W. #3704, University of Nebraska Alumni, Sigma Phi Epsilon, and Xi Psi Phi fraternities.

Jil M. Evans of Richland died Friday June 8 in Columbus. Memorial services are 11: 00 am Monday June 11 at the First United Methodist Church in Columbus with the Rev. Gary Main officiating. Jil's family will receive friends at the church from 10: 00 am until service time on Monday.

Jil was born April 3, 1957 in Schuyler to Ernest & Thelma (Cameron) Evans. She moved to Columbus at age 5. She graduated from Columbus High School in 1975. She worked with the Columbus Police Department for 21 years. She enjoyed flowers, gardening, and animals. Jil was a member of the First United Methodist Church. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society or to Donors Choice.
