Mabel Emma Barrett, 100

(Sept. 19) TORRINGTON, Wyo. - Mabel Emma Barrett, 100, died Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2003, at the Goshen Care Center. She was born Sept. 14, 1903, at Springfield, the daughter of David Henry and Sylvia (Stepanek) Nicholson.

She received her education; graduating from Springfield High School. She attended Peru Normal and the University of Wyoming. On Dec. 5, 1925, she was married to Frank L. Barrett at Torrington, and they had two children. The couple lived at Bridgeport, Mitchell and Alliance, Neb., as well as Dana Point and Mt. Shasta, Calif., before moving to Torrington. She worked as a telephone operator, a teacher at Frontier School near Hawk Springs, Wyo., and at Thiele's Drug Store at Alliance. She was a fifty-year member of Eastern Star, a Daughter of the Nile, and the First Presbyterian Church of Alliance. She is survived by her daughter Mary Ellen (Robert) Kastner and of Torrington; a grandson Gerald M. Smith, II of Florida; grandson Michael B. Smith of Torrington; a granddaughter Su L.B. McKinney of Torrington; a grandson Franklin Barrett of Ft. Jones, Calif.; great-grandson Mark Smith of Florida; great-granddaughters, Monica Miura of Albuquerque, N.M.; Jennifer B. Smith and Donna May B. Smith of Torrington; great-grandson Devan Barrett of Ft. Jones; and two great-great- grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Frank in 1976, son Leonard in 1980, parents, two brothers, two sisters, and an infant sister.

Mrs. Barrett's funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 22, at the Colyer Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Thomas Hall officiating. Burial will follow in the Valley View Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to noon Monday at the Colyer Funeral Home and the casket will be open following the service. A memorial has been established to the Goshen Care Center. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Colyer Funeral Home.

Marie J. Erickson, 62

(Sept. 19) ALLIANCE - Marie J. Erickson, 62, died Thursday, Sept. 18, 2003, at Box Butte General Hospital. She was born Dec. 16, 1940, at Mahnomen, Minn., to Bernard and Agnes (Myhre) Nelson.

On June 13, 1964, she was married to Jake H. Erickson. In 1971 they moved to Alliance where Marie worked for the Game and Parks Commission. She later worked as a special education aid and as a teachers aid at Central Elementary School. She is survived by her husband, Jake; daughter and son-in-law, Michele and Kevin Piihl of Tucson, Ariz.; sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Kelli Erickson of Alliance, and Ken and Darlene Erickson of Gillette, Wyo.; grandchildren, Brittany Piihl, Ashley Piihl, Lindsey Erickson, Jacob Erickson, Nicholas Erickson and Conner Erickson. She is also survived by her brother Jean (Shirley) Nelson of Waubun, Minn., and sister Helen (Raymond) Leslie of Mahnomen.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 24, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, with Fr. Bryan Ernest officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. A wake service will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 23, at Holy Rosary Church. Memorials may be given to Prairie Haven Hospice, or to the American Cancer Society at, P.O. Box 102454, Atlanta, Georgia, 30368. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Robert L. "Bob" Johnson, 81

(Sept 20) GORDON - Robert L. "Bob" Johnson, 81, died Sunday, Sept. 17, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident near Alliance.

He was born Sept. 18, 1918, at Valentine. His parents were Edward and Mazie (Smith) Johnson. He married Marie Hathorn on March 29, 1941. She preceded him in death on Oct. 26, 1998. He had ranched in the Gordon and Merriman area.

At the time of his death, he carried the "Omaha World-Herald" from Alliance to Hay Springs, Rushville and Gordon. He enjoyed dancing and bowling. His survivors include his two sons, Jerry Johnson of Alliance and Curtis Johnson of Douglas, Wyo.; daughter, Lois Dentson of Wamsutter, Wyo.; four sisters, Ruth Harms and Gayle Hanna, both of Valentine, Betty Kreycik of Edmondton, Canada and Gwen Jensen of Ridgecrest, Calif.; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 20, at the Gordon Bible Church with the Rev. Jim Herr officiating. Burial will be held in the Gordon Cemetery. A memorial has been established for BobŐs family. Cicmanec-Pier Funeral Service is in charge of the arrangements.

William Lorenzo Adam, 97

(Sept 20) ALLIANCE - William Lorenzo Adam of Ashby died Tuesday, Sept. 19, at Good Samaritan Health Care Center in Alliance.

He was 97 years old. William Lorenzo, known as "Wren" or "Renz" to his family and friends, was born July 17, 1903 in Fairplay, Mo. to George Alexander and Emma May (King) Adam.

Wren moved from Missouri to Nebraska as a young child, with his parents in 1909, when they came to the Nebraska Sandhills to homestead. They located two miles north of Mother Lake in Cherry County. where Wren would reside until 1996, when he became a resident of Highland Park Care Center. He only recently transferred to Good Samaritan Health Care Center where he passed away.

Wren loved his Sandhills home where he grew up and spent most of his married life. He never had a desire to leave it. The Sandhills were his playground as well as his home. He loved to hunt and his fondest moments were those spent with his hunting dog, Pointer roaming the hills. He became a Master Mason of Zion Lodge #234 at Hyannis, Nebraska on Nov. 9, 1927. In December 1997, he received the Bronze Jordan Medal for maintaining a 70-year membership there, the longest time on record at the time. He also carried the distinction of being the oldest member of the Lodge at that time. A member since January 23, 1931, Wren was a life member of the Alliance Scottish Rite, as well as the Cattle Capital Shrine Club. He was also a member of the Golden Rule Chapter #134 Order of Eastern Star in Hyannis.

He married Goldie Hubbell on May 27, 1930 in Lead, South Dakota. She preceded him in death in 1985. His brothers, Donald, Wallace, Bernard and Maynard, also precede him in death. He is survived by his sister, Jen Donielson, of Alliance, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Friday, Sept. 23, at 10:30 a.m. at the First United Church of Christ in Hyannis. Pastor Bill DeLisle will officiate. Masonic Rites will be held at the church. Burial will be in the Hyannis Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Zion Lodge #234 in Hyannis, Nebraska. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Phillip F. Guntle, 64

(Sept. 20) ALLIANCE - Phillip F. Guntle died Friday, September 15 at his home. He was 64 years old. He was born October 18, 1935, to Elmer and Dorothy (Navel) Guntle in Topeka, Kansas. He married Kathryn M. Poyner on December 8, 1977, at Denver, Colo.

He had lived in Alliance since 1979, where he had been employed at the BNSF Railroad. His survivorŐs include his children, Phillip Guntle, Jr. of Castle Rock, Colo., Kim Gillham of Shreveport, La., Kelly Richardson of Farmington, Ark., and Karen and Mark Crouse of Bingham. Also surviving him are his mother, Dorothy Knoop, sister Linda Kovacs, brother Harold Guntle, all of Denver, Colo., and a sister, Mary Colmere of Morrison, Colo.

His father, his wife, and one brother, Charlie, preceded him in death. Memorial services will be Thursday, Sept. 21, at 11 am at the Indian Mission- Church of God. Reverend Don Mink will officiate. A memorial for an animal shelter will be established. Donations can be sent in care of Karen Crouse, P.O. Box 595-Bingham, NE 69335. Memorials may also be given to the Indian Mission-Church of God. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Margaret Wackerle, 73

(Sept. 20) ALLIANCE - Margaret L. "Peggy" Wackerle, 73, died Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2001, at her home. She was born December 15, 1927, at Burns, Wyo. to James T. and Sophie A. (Harms) Corrigan.

She married George D. Wackerle Aug. 28, 1948, at Kansas City, Mo. He survives at the home. She is also survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl and Greg Garrett of Alliance; grandsons, James Garrett of Alliance, Kurt Garrett of Chadron, and Chris Garrett of Alliance; great-granddaughter, Alexis Garrett of Alliance; and great-grandson, Jude Garrett of Alliance. She also is survived by her sister, Carole Castret of Kansas City, Mo.; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, and one sister.

Memorial services will be at 10 a.m., Monday, Sept. 24, at the Bates-Gould Chapel, with Rev. Ed Hunzeker officiating. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery. Memorials may be given to Prairie Haven Hospice. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Donald B. Hall, 75

(Sept. 20) ALLIANCE - Donald Bevington Hall, 75, died Thursday, Sept. 19, 2002, at Highland Park Care Center. He was born on Aug. 7, 1927, to Albon and Esther (Bevington) Hall of Alliance.

Much of his youth was spent in Alliance. In 1945, he graduated from high school at Curtis, Neb. In 1946, he enlisted in the Navy and served almost two years aboard the U.S.S. Curtiss. Following his discharge, he returned to work on the Morrill county ranch established in 1888 by his grandfather, Eugene A. Hall, and operated by his father, Albon B. Hall. Following his father's death in 1968, he became president of Hall Cattle Co. He married Edna Mae (Ditsch) Brown on Febr. 26, 1971. He retired from active ranching in 2000. He was a member of the Cattle Capital Shrine Club, serving as its president in 1972. He also was active as a member of St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, the Nebraska Cattlemen's Association, The National Cattlemen's Association, and the Scottish Rite and York Rite lodges. He especially enjoyed flying, golfing, and spending time at his cabin in the Black Hills. He is survived by his wife, Mae; children, Cory (Deb) Hall of Norwalk, Iowa, Cheryl Hall of Joplin, Mo., Steve (and Kim) Brown of Leavenworth, Kan., Larry (and Cindi) Brown of Desert Hills, Ariz., and Ron (and Cindy) Brown of Alliance; and grandchildren, Bryson, Whitney, and Trevor Hall of Norwalk, Jessica and Amanda Brown of Leavenworth, and Andrew Brown of Alliance. He also is survived by a sister, Nancy Lockhart, of Clovis, N.M.; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Jack Hall; and a half brother, Richard Beaumont.

Mr. Hall's funeral will be at 2 p.m., Monday, Sept. 23, at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, with Rev. Paul Mottl officiating. Burial with military graveside rites will be in the Alliance Cemetery. Memorials may be sent to Prairie Haven Hospice, St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, or the donor's choice. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Frances Hayward, 95

(Sept. 24) ALLIANCE - Frances Hayward, 95, died Sunday, Sept. 23, 2001, at Good Samaritan Health Care Center. She was born Aug. 6, 1906, in Hyannis to William and Alice (Monahan) Jones.

She graduated from Hyannis High School in May 1924. She attended a summer session at Kearney State Teachers College and taught one year at a rural school. On Aug. 4, 1925, she married Earl Hayward in Fort Collins, Colo. She was a member of the First United Church of Christ in Hyannis and an associate member of the First Presbyterian Church in Alliance. Frances was an over 50-year member of the Golden Rule Chapter 134 Order of Eastern Star of Hyannis, where she was Past Worthy Matron and Secretary for 11 years, life member of the Grant County Historical Society, American Auxiliary Society, American Legion Auxiliary, King's Daughters of United Church of Christ. She was also a Camp Fire Girls and 4-H Club leader, 31-year secretary for the Grant County Fair Board. Her survivors are her brother, Boyd Jones of Hyannis; sisters, Marie Jones of Alliance, Lois Mansfield of North Platte, and Ruth Perrett of Rapid City, S.D.; 17 nieces and nephews, and numerous great and great-great nieces and nephews. Her parents, husband, brother James and sister Margaret Kommers preceded her in death.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 26 at the Hyannis Cemetery, with the Reverend Bill DeLisle officiating. Memorials may be given to the Hyannis Cemetery. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Betty Leistritz, 68

(Sept. 24) LAKESIDE - Betty Irene Leistritz, 68, died Saturday, Sept. 22, 2001, at Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff. She was born March 21, 1933 in rural Box Butte County to Jack and Martha (Spetman) Dye.

She graduated from Alliance High School in 1950. She took 2 years of nursing training in Alliance and then graduated from Sisters of St. Francis School of Nursing in Minot, N. D. in 1953. She was married to Darrel Leistritz on June 30, 1954, in Alliance. To this union three children were born. Betty worked as a Registered Nurse providing home care for many patients. She also worked as Director of Nursing at St. Joseph's Gerontology Center in Alliance, Beverly Health Care in Sidney and Hemingford Community Care Center. She was a member of the Church of Christ and Past Regent of D.A.R. She is survived by her children, Jerry and Sherrie Leistritz of Lakeside, Lisa and Allen Bright of Antioch, and Jana Leistritz of Bridgeport; and grandchildren, Sara and John Fehringer, Jeffrey Leistritz, Andrew Leistritz and Abigail Bright. She also is survived by brothers, Erwin Dye, Frank Dye and Jim Dye of Alliance; numerous nieces and nephews. Her parents and a brother Cecil preceded her in death.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 26 at the Bates-Gould Chapel, with Reverend Jason Sparks officiating. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the American Red Cross. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Joe A. Rice, 71

(Sept. 24) GERING - Joe Arnold Rice, 71, died Thursday, Sept. 20, 2001, at Heritage Health Care Center in Gering. He was born Jan. 9, 1930 at Alliance. His parents were Clark James and May Lulu (Covalt) Rice.

He attended school at Broadwater until moving to Redington to help on the family farm. He served in the U.S. Air Force as an A&E Mechanic and Acft Maintenance F-89 D Crse. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. He worked as an auto mechanic, oil field worker and sanitation engineer prior to his retirement. He is survived by two daughters, Nancy Lou Bruckner of Gering, and Lorraine Lynn Deines of Riverside, Calif.; one son, Dale Mark Rice of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and six grandchildren. He also is survived by two sisters, Juanita Hashagen and Vivian (Jake) Nelson of Bridgeport; and three brothers, John Rice, his twin of Redington, Clark Rice of Faison, N.C., and Lyle Rice of McCoud, Calif.

Mr. Rice's funeral was held Monday, Sept. 24, at the Jolliffe Funeral Home at Bridgeport, with Pastor Jeff Twombly officiating. Burial with military honors was in the Alliance Cemetery. Memorials have been established to Heritage Health Care Center and Prairie Haven Hospice.

Emoline Cheney Crate, 89

(Sept. 24) BEATRICE - Emoline Cheney Crate, 89, died Sunday, Sept. 22, 2002, at Beatrice Community Hospital. She was born Aug. 8, 1913, at Alliance, to Charles and Blanche (Batton) Grassman.

On July 4, 1937, she was married to Everett Cheney at North Platte. Following his death in 1989, she married Charles Crate. He preceded her in death. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Eastern Star and P.E.O. She is survived by her daughters and their husbands, Deborah and Domer Bloskey of Woodland Park, Colo., and Sarah and Thomas Porto of Lincoln; grandchildren, Amanda and John Payne, Tonya Matejka, Mark Porto and David Porto. She also is survived by her sister Shirley Bauman of Alliance.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 26 the United Methodist Church, with Rev. Jerry Mercer officiating. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the P.E.0. Home, 413 N 5th Street, Beatrice, NE 68310 or to a charity of the donor's choice Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Nora W. Anderson, 93

(Sept. 25) ALLIANCE - Nora W. Anderson died Thursday, Sept. 21 at the Good Samaritan Health Care Center. She was 93 years old. She was born June 21, 1907 at Pottawattamie County, Iowa to Henry J. and Anna S. (Scheel) Deitchler.

At the age of 14, Nora moved with her family to a farm southwest of Hemingford. She was married to Knute Anderson on March 8, 1926. They were engaged in farming west of Hemingford until the early 1940Ős when they then moved to Alliance where Mr. Anderson was a mechanic at Newberry Hardware Store until he retired in 1956. Nora was employed at HestedŐs where she worked at the lunch counter for many years.

She started working at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home when it first opened in 1965, working in the kitchen before transferring to the laundry department where she remained until her retirement in 1990. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and was an active member of the St. JohnŐs United Lutheran Church for many years. She was also a member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary. Her survivorŐs include her children and their spouses, Norman and Darlene Anderson of Hemingford, Gladys and Benjamin Thomas of Los Angeles, Calif., and Betty and Douglas Essert of Yoder, Wyo.

She is also survived by her brother, Fred Deitchler of Lakewood, Colo., sister, Fern Meisenhelder of Pueblo, Colo., special friend, Norma Jean Powers of Weatherford, Okla., seven grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. Preceding her in death were her parents, husband, and two brothers.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, Sept. 26, at 10:30 a.m. at the St. JohnŐs United Lutheran Church. Reverend Kent Bryant officiating. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Good Samaritan Village. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Roger D. Grasmick, 55

(Sept. 25) ALLIANCE - Roger D. Grasmick age 55 died Sunday, September 24, at Box Butte General Hospital in Alliance. He was born June 30, 1945 at Cheyenne, Wyo. to Jacob and Esther (Ring) Grasmick. He recieved his education in the Scottsbluff Schools.

He married Joyce A. Schilreff on January 25, 1964, in Scottsbluff. In 1968 they moved to Alliance. Roger worked for the GibsonŐs store in Alliance serving as manager. He later worked for the City of Alliance, Alliance Housing Authority and Western Sugar Company.

His survivors are his wife, Joyce, son and daughter-in-law, Tracy and Romona Grasmick of Sidney; daughter and son-in-law, Julie and Roger Gabelhause of Alliance; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Patricia and Charles Halstead and Sharon and Robert Schledewitz of Morrill; and a brother, Michael Grasmick of Scottsbluff. Two grandchildren, Camden and Crystal and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews also survive him. His parents preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, Sept. 27, at 2 p.m. at the Bates-Gould Chapel. The Reverend Mark Schutt will officiate. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery. Memorials may be sent in care of the family at P.O. Box 1007, Alliance, NE 69301. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Curtis Hansen, 89

(Sept. 25) BELLEVILLE, Kans. - Curtis Hansen, 89, died Sept. 21, 2001, at the Belleville Health Care Center. He was born Jan. 15, 1912, at Rural Munden, Kan. His parents were William and Elfreda (Christensen) Hansen.

He graduated from Belleville High School in 1932, and attended Kansas State University. He married Blanche Novak March 23, 1938. He was a farmer and stockman. He is survived by his wife Blanche of the home; five sons, Larry Hansen of Alliance, Joe Hansen, Bill Hansen, Dennis Hansen and Randy Hansen of Belleville; one daughter, Joyce Hansen of Grand Junction, Colo.; twelve grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and seven step-great-grandchildren.

Mr. Hansen's funeral was Tuesday, Sept. 25, at Bachelor-Faulkner-Dart-Surber Chapel at Belleville, Pastor Shelby Bailey officiating. Burial was in Pleasant Hill Cemetery at rural Belleville.
