Wanda Harrison, 91

(Sept. 25) LINCOLN - Wanda Estelle Harrison, 91, of Lincoln, died Monday, Sept. 24, 2001, at Lincoln. She was born Feb. 2, 1910, at Eads, Colo. Her parents were Frank Allen and Rose Myra (Smith) Thompson.

She attended school at Eads, and moved to Gering in 1927, where her father worked for the Union Pacific Railroad. She attended high school at Gering, and attended business school at Grand Island following graduation. She was married to Albert Leonard Harrison of Gering in 1928. With their daughter Jacqueline, they moved to Alliance in 1948. She worked as a bookkeeper at Slagle Clinic for 18 years until her retirement in 1978, when she moved to Lincoln to be near her daughter. She had been a member of the United Methodist Church at Alliance, the Eastridge Presbyterian Church at Lincoln, and of their Friendship Club. At the time of her death, she was a member of Christ United Methodist Church. She enjoyed working crossword puzzles, was an avid fan of baseball, country music, and enjoyed a good laugh.

The lights of her life were her grandsons and great-grandchildren, and her favorite dogs, Chelsea and Wesley. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Jacqueline R. and Ben B. Akert; grandsons and spouses, Leonard A. and Becky Akert and Bruce E. and Solveig Akert; great-grandsons, Brian Akert, Brandon Akert and Erik Akert; great-granddaughter, Kelda Nelson; niece Lila Nan Pickett; cousins, long-time Gering classmates; and special friend Dorothy Stucky. She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Leonard Harrison, and her parents Frank Allen and Rose Myra (Smith) Thompson.

Mrs. Harrison's funeral will be at 3 p.m., Friday, Sept. 28, at Christ United Methodist Church, 4530 A St., with Pastor Mike McMurtry officiating. A memorial has been established to Cedars Home for Children. Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Bertha Elizabeth Wyland, 85

(Sept. 25) HEMINGFORD - Bertha Elizabeth Wyland, 85, died Monday, Sept. 22, 2002 at Hemingford Community Care Center. She was born Nov. 18, 1916, at Darbyville, Iowa, to Samuel and Iva (Glass) Hiner.

Her family came to Nebraska when she was two years old. She lived most of her life in the Hemingford area and graduated from Hemingford High School in 1935. She was married to Alfred Wyland on June 1, 1935. To this union ten children were born, Alfred, John, Carol, Norma, Kenneth, Donna, Donald, Robert, Thomas and Deborah. For many years she worked domestically for Lorene Cullan and Geneice Rosenberger. She is survived by her children, Alfred LeRoy and Candace Wyland of Las Vegas, Nev., John and Judy Wyland of Bridgeport, Carol and George Wickham of Hemingford, Norma and Jerome Kosmicki of Grand Island, Donna and William Meng of Gordon, and Deborah and Jerry Mundt of Hemingford; daughter-in-law Colleen Wyland of Hemingford; 24 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; and four great-great grandchildren. Her parents, husband, sons Kenneth, Donald, Robert and Thomas, two grandchildren, one great-grandchild, brothers Lorrine and Basil Hiner and sisters Cleo Roberts, Goldie Moore and Viola Osborn preceded her in death. She was an active member of the Scottsbluff Salon No. 630 8 and 40, Rebekah Lodge, American Legion Auxiliary Unit 9, Hemingford Firemen's Auxiliary, Wesleyan Service Guild and R.S.V.P.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 26 at the United Methodist Church in Hemingford, with Rev. Craig Collins officiating. Burial will be in the Hemingford Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Hemingford Community Care Center or the Hemingford Volunteer Firefighters Association. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Violet Lee Ball, 73

(Sept. 26) ARMOUR, S.D. - Violet Lee Ball, 73, died in a nursing home in Armour, S.D. She was born in Nonpareil to Archy and Barbara Ball.

Her survivors include her eight children, Gloria Hargus of Keystone, S.D., Charlott Martinez of Rockford, Ill., Dorenne Shepard of Custard, S.D., Randy Schmitz of Rockford, Ill., Sherrie Jordan of Wagner, S.D., Lloyd Thompson, Jr. of Alexandrea, S.D., Cindy Gonzalez of Rockford, Ill. and Joey Stickley of Rockford, Ill.; one sister, Barbara Florez of Biose, Idaho and one brother, Rex Ball of Biose, Idaho.

Graveside services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 27, at the Hemingford Cemetery with Pastor Craig Collins officiating. Clements-Wiese Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Maxine Leishman, 69

(Sept. 26) ARVADA, Colo. - Maxine Doris Leishman, 69, died Sunday, Sept. 23, 2001, at Mountain Vista Health Center in Wheat Ridge, Colo. She was born at Chadron. Her parents were Charles L. and Edith F. Beers.

She was a longtime resident of Arvada, CO. She was an Elementary Education graduate of Chadron State College. She taught fifth grade at Alliance and substituted in the Jefferson County Schools, Colo. for many years. She was a member of Tri-City Baptist Church at Westminster, Colo., where she taught Sunday school and sang in the choir. She is survived by her husband Robert W. Leishman of Arvada; two sons, Robert L. Leishman of Denver, Colo., and David Leishman; and three grandchildren. She also is survived by her twin sister, Nadine Beckenbach of Rapid City, S.D.; and sisters Jane Hetrick of Fremont, and Charlette Sause of Freehold, N.J.

Mrs Leishman's funeral eill be at 10 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 27, at Tri-City Baptist Church at Arvada, with Pastor Matt Olson officiating. Burial will be at Ft. Logan National Cemetery, Jefferson County, Colo.

Monte Hord, 46

(Sept. 26) PELHAM, N.Y. - Monte M. Hord died Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2001, as a result of the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center in New York City. He was born Aug. 24, 1955, in Grand Island. His parents were Thomas F. and Gloria M. Hord.

He grew up at Central City and worked on the Hord family's ranch and feedlot operations. He graduated from Central City High School in 1973, and the University of Nebraska in 1978. He married Lisa Sharp June 7, 1980. He is survived by his wife, Lisa; and three children, Molly and twins Sophie and Jackson. He also is survived by two brothers, Dan Hord of Wilmette, Ill., and Stacy Hord of Biloxi, Miss.; and two sisters Sara Beck of Lincoln and Debra Taylor of Colorado Springs, Colo.

Mr. Hord's memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 29, at Christ Episcopal Church at Central City, with the Rev. Del Funk officiating. A memorial has been established to the Hord Children's Educational Fund. Wagner Funeral Home in Central City is in charge of arrangements.

Hortencia Martinez, 57

(Sept. 27) ALLIANCE - Hortencia Martinez of Alliance died Monday, Sept. 25, at her home. She was 57. She was born Oct. 9, 1943, in San Isidro, N.L., Mexico to Ignacio and Emilia (Cabrera) Suarez. She was married August 31, 1960, to Salomon Martinez in Parlier, Calif. She has been an Alliance resident for 21 years. Previously she lived in California, Washington and Mexico. She was a member of the Hispanic Assembly of God Church.

Survivors are her husband, Salomon Martinez, father Ignacio Suarez, daughter and son-in-law, Leticia and Francisco Orozco, and a son, Humberto Martinez all of Alliance. Grandchildren, Angelly, Emely and Francisco Orozco, Jr., and Cody James Martinez.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, Sept. 27, at 7 p.m. at Hispanic Assembly of God Church the with Adolfo Reynaga officiating. Burial will be in Pesqueria Cemetery, Pesqueria, and N.L., Mexico. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Calvin A. Muhm, 79

(Sept. 27) ALLIANCE - Calvin A. Muhm died Tuesday, Sept. 26, at the Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff. He was 79 years old.

He was born December 6, 1920, to Alan and Garnet (Luke) Muhm at Chadron. He married Evelyn Hannah in September of 1940. He later married Rita Leisy on May 7, 1977, at Reno, Nevada. He had worked at the Alliance Creamery-Purina Foods from 1941 to 1979 when he then moved to Carson City, Nevada where he worked as a prison guard until his retirement in 1998 when he then returned to Alliance. In 1984 he received the Solar Energy Award from the former Secretary of Energy, Donald Odel. In 1988 he earned the State of Nevada GovernorÕs Award for designing the Capital Baptist Church in Carson City, Nev. He was a member of the Evangelical Free Church.

His survivorÕs include his children and their spouses, Julieann and Robert McChesney of North Platte, Bruce and Jean Muhm of Wichita, Kansas; step-children and their spouses, Darrel D. and Wilda Leisy of Atkinson, Delbert and Nancy Leisy of Hemingford, and A. Louis Leisy of Alliance. Also surviving him are his brother, Donald Muhm of Oxnard, Calif., six grandchildren, eight step-grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Preceding him in death were his parents, wife, Evelyn, one son, Calvin Muhm, Jr., and one sister, Phillis Muhm.

Funeral services will be Friday, Sept. 29 at 10 a.m. at the Evangelical Free Church. Reverend Robert Reuss, Jr. will officiate. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Nebraska ChildrenÕs Home or the Evangelical Free Church. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Don Bauer, 85

(Sept. 27) PARADISE, Calif. - Don Bauer, 85, died Monday, Sept. 25, at his home in California. He was born march 28, 1915, in Alliance. His parents were Charles and Maude (Ferbach) Bauer. He attended schools in the Alliance area until the eighth grade.

He was a farmer and rancher for 32 years before selling the family farm in Alliance. In 1969 he and his wife moved to paradise, Calif. He was a member of the Paradise Congregation of JehovahÕs Witnesses. He has served as an elder in all three congregations in the Paradise area. His survivors include his wife, Maxine; three brothers, Bernard Bauer of Alliance, Clifford Bauer of Centralia, Wash. and Frank Bauer of Roswell, N.M.; one son, Ronald Bauer of Paradise, Calif.; one daughter, Colette Whitehead of Omaha; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. At his request there were no services held. Rose Chapel of paradise, Calif. was in charge of the arrangements.

Marshall W. Turnipseed

(Sept. 27) COMMERCE CITY, Colo. - Marshall W. Turnipseed died Sunday, Sept. 24. He married Clea Banjoff on Alliance on April 24, 1939.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 2, at the Trinity Christian Center, 11980 Claude Court, Northglenn, Colo. A memorial has been established for the AlzheimerÕs Association. Donations may be sent to 789 Sherman Street, Suite 500, Denver, CO 80203.

Frank O. Wiggins, 58

(Sept. 27) LEWELLEN - Fank O. Wiggins, 58, died Monday, Sept. 25, in the Garden County Hospital in Oshkosh. He was born Nov. 27, 1941, in Alliance to Otis and Celia (Davis) Wiggins.

He graduated from Broadwater High School in 1959. On Oct. 23, he married Lairie Canmore at Broadwater. They farmed at Broadwater before moving to Bassett in 1950. In 1970 they moved to Hemingford where they farmed and operated a feed yard.

After retirement they moved to Lake McConaughy in 2000. His survivors include his wife Lairie; two daughters and sons-in-law, Kim and Kent Prochazka of Ft. Collins, Colo. and Tammy and Nick Dannar of Hemingford; three grandchildren; three sisters, Joy Kruse of Lincoln, Rose Curless of Kimball and Gail DeBoer of El Paso, Texas; a brother, Ralph Wiggins of San Francisco, Calif. and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 29, at the United Methodist Church in Oshkosh with the Rev. Jerry Mercer officiating. A memorial has been established for the Lewellen Rescue Unit. Holecheck Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Lloyd A. Softley, 99

(Sept. 27) ALLIANCE - Lloyd A. Softley, 99, died Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2001, at Highland Park Care Center in Alliance. Lloyd Alfred Softley, born July 16, 1902, at Hooper to Fred and Jennie (Ferguson) Softley.

He was married on Sept. 30, 1925, to Alice (Kleinschmidt) Softley. He is survived by two daughters and their spouses, Helen and the Rev. Bill Moore of Nebraska City, and Judy and Bill Wickham of Hartford, Conn.; two sons, Lloyd Jr. of Alliance, and Kenneth Softley of Topeka, Kan.; seven grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and one step-great-great grandchild. He was preceded in death by wife, parents, two sisters and five brothers. Mr. Softley worked for Bauman Oil Company in Grafton until joining Socony Vacuum Oil Company as a District Sales representative, which resulted in a move to Kearney in 1944. In 1955, he became bulk distributor for the re-named Mobil Oil Company in Chadron, retiring in 1968. Mr. Softley was active in Methodist Men, served as a volunteer Boy Scout leader, and enjoyed golf in retirement.

Memorial services will be held at a later date. Bates-Gould Funeral Home of Alliance is in charge of arrangements.

Paul C. Long, 94

(Sept. 27) ALLIANCE - Paul C. Long, 94, died Friday, Sept. 27, 2002, at Box Butte General Hospital. He was born Jan. 31, 1908, at Mullen, to Emmett E. and Sadie (Wilde) Long.

He graduated from Mullen High School in 1927. On Sept. 4, 1928, he married Eva O. Reigle at Alliance. They celebrated their 74th anniversary earlier this month. They owned and operated the Mullen Bakery and Telephone Exchange before moving to Alliance in 1942. He was employed the Live Wire Transfer and an electrician for the City of Alliance from 1944 to 1948. He was then employed by the C.B.& Q. Railroad until his retirement in 1976. He was a member of St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, a lifetime member of the Alliance Volunteer Fire Department, Eagles and Elks Clubs as well as organizations connected with the railroad. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golf and watching the Nebraska Cornhuskers, especially when his grandsons Randy and Tim Borg were members of the team in the early 1970's. He is survived by his wife Eva; children, Patsy and Dale Borg of Alliance, and Richard and Jeri Long of Los Angeles, Calif.; six grandchildren, Marcie Long of Kelseyville, Calif., David and Karen Long of Port Angeles, Wash., Sarah and Alan Stahl of Roselyn Wash., Randy and Carin Borg of Lincoln, Tim and Nancy Borg of Westminster, Colo., and Brenda and Tim McDonald of Alliance; and 11 great-grandchildren. He also is survived by his brother Emmett Glenn and Lou Long of Mullen, and sister Mary Teicheira of Danville, Calif. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Dorothy Brown.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Oct. 1, at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, with the Rev. John Adam officiating. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the church, Shrine Hospital Transportation Fund, or to a charity of the donor's choice. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Larry Haller, 61

(Sept. 28) ALLIANCE - Larry Lee Haller, 61, died Thursday, Sept. 27, 2001, at Highland Park Care Center in Alliance. He was born Feb. 25, 1940, at Gordon, Nebraska to Bernard and Lila (Alexander) Haller.

He married Carolyn Kearns August 1962 in Rushville. To this union 5 sons were born. On Feb. 25, 1994, he married Teresa Smith in Charleston, S.C. He lived most of his life in the Gordon area working in farming and ranching. His survivors are his wife Teresa of Alliance; sons and their wives, Leonard and Kim Haller, Richard and Barb Haller, John Haller all of Gordon, Harold (Herb) and Brenda Haller of Potter, Mark Haller of Rushville; step-children, Cheri and Russell Kendle of Bayard, Maryann and Mark Davis of Woodland, Calif.; and 19 grandchildren. He also is survived by one brother, Gary and Glenna Haller of Weatherford, Texas; one sister, Laura Jean and Harold McGrew of Hanahan, S.C., uncle Noel and Arvella Alexander and aunt Lorraine Alexander; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. His parents preceded him in death. He was a former member of the Marine Corp as well as a member of the Catholic Church, 4-H Board, Elks Club and lifetime member of the American Legion.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Monday, Oct. 1, Bates-Gould Chapel. Rev. Ed Hunzeker and Rev. Vince Parsons will officiate. Burial with military rites will be in the Alliance Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society or sent to the family at 320 Cheyenne, Alliance, NE 69301. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Florence James, 94

(Sept. 28) ABERDEEN, S.D. - Florence Ailcy James, 94, died Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2001, at the Aberdeen Living Center. She was born July 27, 1907 at Steele City. Her parents were Bert and Alice (Dobbins) Miller.

In 1918 the family moved to Hemingford where she graduated from high school in 1927. She married Andrew E. James at Hemingford on March 22, 1929. He preceded her in death Oct. 22, 1984. She lived at Hemingford until 1955, then at King Salmon, Ark. until 1967, Inman, Neb. until 1993, and Aberdeen until her death. She is survived by one daughter, Alice Condry of Aberdeen; seven grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Mrs. James memorial service will be at 3 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 29 at the Homestead Apartments 2324 Third Ave. SE, Aberdeen, with Sr. Helen Jean Washtak officiating. Burial of her cremains will be at 3 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 6, at the Hemingford Cemetery. Miller-Huebl Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
