Virginia Foster, 88

(Oct. 9) HASTINGS - Virginia Foster, 88, former Alliance resident, died Saturday, Oct. 5, 2002, at Perkins Pavillion. She was born Oct. 20, 1913, at Hutchinson, Kan. Her parents were William Noah and Lydia (Montgomery) Sidinger.

She graduated from Hutchinson High School, Hutchinson Junior College and Kansas State University with a B.S. in Journalism. She was married to Dr. Neil C. Gustafson on Aug. 30, 1940. Dr. Gustafson died in the mid-1960s. She was married to John B. Foster on July 8, 1967. The couple moved to Alliance for 11 years where she organized a four-county genealogical society and began a home-based business in genealogical supplies, traveling as a vendor to workshops in seven states. She also was the editor of Family Records Association Journal for nine years. Mr. Foster died in April 1999. She was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority and the First Presbyterian Church of Hastings, and served on the National Board of First Mates. She is survived by her daughter, Deborah Lyons of Grand Island; her sons, Stephen C. Gustafson of Peoria, Ill., and Mark M. Gustafson of Tempe, Ariz.; five grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

Mrs. Foster's funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 11, at First Presbyterian Church in Hastings, with Dr. Carl W. Utley officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens in Hastings. Visitation will be until 9 p.m. today, 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. Thursday, and 9:30 a.m. until service time Friday. Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church of Hastings. Butler-Volland Funeral Home of Hastings is in charge of arrangements.

Mary E Carder, 81

(Oct. 10) CHADRON - Mary E Carder, 81, died Monday, Oct. 9, at Chadron Community Hospital. She was born Jan. 3, 1919, in Buffalo Gap, S.D. Her parents were George F. and Julia (Ellin) Carder.

She was a member of the Chadron State College Alumni Foundation, Grace Episcopal Church and The Order of the Eastern Star. She is survived by her sister Ruth (Tom) Journey of Mesa, Ariz. She also is survived by her great niece Julie Ravenscroft of Hyannis. Ms. Carder's memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct 13, at Prairie Pines.

Burial will be at St. Mark's Episcopal Church Columbarium in Mesa, Ariz. Chamberlain Chapel of Chadron is in charge of all arrangements. Memorials may be made to the Chadron State College Foundation.

Albon "Jack" Hall, 79

(Oct. 10) ALLIANCE - Jack Hall died Monday, Oct. 9, at Box Butte General Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.

Jack is survived by his wife, Mary Ann, and his children and their spouses: Bob and Robyn Nason of Alliance; Jose and Lynn Sanchez of Jacksonville, Texas; Dan and Beth Hall of Palmer, Alaska; and Gene and Francis Shaw of Lakeside. Stepdaughters: Connie Smith of Ranier, Wash.; Kay Cook of Salinas, Calif.; and Heidi Owens of Los Gatos, Calif. Surviving, also, are 17 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. Surviving siblings are Don and Mae Hall of Alliance; and Bob and Nancy Lockhart of Logan, N.M. He is mourned, too, by his first wife Mildred Hall of Jacksonville, Texas, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Jack was born Sept. 22, 1921, in Alliance, to Albon B. and Esther (Bevington) Hall. He grew up in Alliance and on the family ranch, Hall Cattle Company, in Morrill County. He married Mildred Gorman, and they raised their four children in the Letan area south of Alliance. He joined the Navy during World War II and served mostly in the Pacific Theatre on a minesweeper and with the Shore Patrol. Jack retired from ranching in the early 70's and began new endeavors in San Jose, Calif. When he retired, he was a Lt. in the Kaiser-Permanente Security Force in the Silicon Valley. He and Mary Ann married Jan. 22, 1983, and traveled extensively during retirement Everywhere they went, they left beautiful roses and friends behind them. Jack and Mary Ann returned to Alliance in 1998 to be closer to family, renew old friendships, and to make new ones. His good nature and unflagging sense of humor will be sorely missed by those he leaves behind.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, Oct.r 12, at Saint Matthew's Episcopal Church. Memorial donations requested as donor's choice. .

Viola B. Flowers, 97

(Oct. 10) GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - Viola B. Flowers, 97, died Saturday, Sept. 29, 2991, at her home. She was born April 28, 1904 in Kipaka County. Her parents were George N. and Bertha (Beers) Davis.

She was married to Harry G. Flowers Feb. 17, 1921. She is survived by two daughters, Reva E. Morgan of Alliance and Doris Juffaker of Grand Junction, Colo; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren and one great-great-great-grandchild.

A memorial has been established to Hospice of the Grand Valley, 2754 Compass Dr., Suite 337, P.O. Box 60307, Grand Junction, CO 81504.

William L. Trapp, 55

(Oct. 11) ALLIANCE - William L. Trapp, 55, of Alliance died at his home Friday, Oct. 6, He was born Oct. 13, 1945. His parents were Kenneth H. and V. Grace Trapp. He graduated from Hill City High School in Hill City, S.D., in 1963.

He was employed with Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad as a conductor for many years. Four daughters survive him. TaLisa Burrington and Petrina Spellman, both of Coeur D'Alene, Idaho; and Megan and Karoline Trapp of Rifle, Colo.; and three granddaughters. His sister Susan Clark of Madison Wis.; and former wives Penny (Tyler) Trapp and Kathy Trapp also survive him.

Mr. Trapp's memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Alliance, with Father Jim Golka officiating.

Michael F. Essay, 81

(Oct. 11) ALLIANCE - Longtime area businessman Michael F. Essay Sr., 81, died yesterday, Oct. 10, at the Highland Park Care Center. He was born Oct. 4, 1919, to Elias and Martha (Mohanna) Essay in Alliance.

He graduated from St. Agnes Academy in 1937. During World War II, he served in the Army Air Corp. He married Barbara Essay on Sept. 29, 1947, at Lincoln. They then moved to Toledo, Ohio, where he worked for the Standard Oil Company. In 1949, he returned home to Alliance and became involved in the family business, and later became part owner of the Pepsi Cola Bottling Company.

He was a member of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, a lifetime member of the Alliance Volunteer Fire Department, Elks Lodge, American Legion, and the Eagles. He was also a major contributor to the Box Butte General Hospital expansion project, the Carnegie Arts Center, and various other community organizations.

Mr. Essay's survivors include his children and their spouses, Michael F. Jr. and Dona Essay of Alliance; Mary and Ron Zimmerman of Lincoln; Margaret and Patrick McDaniel of Bailey, Colo.; Jean and Terry Olson of Lake Park, Minn.; Joan and Joe DeSalvo of Canon City, Colo.; and Judy and Scott Bowker of Frisco, Texas. Also surviving him are his longtime special friend Vyvienne Juzenas of Alliance, brothers and sisters-in-law, John and Blanche Essay, and Elias and Joan Essay, all of Alliance, sister Freda Malooley of Indianapolis, Ind.; 12 grandchildren, one great-grandchild and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his parents, his wife, three brothers, and two grandchildren.

Mr. Essay's funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 13, at the Holy Rosary Catholic Church, with Father Bryan Ernest officiating. Burial with military rites will be in the Calvary Cemetery. A rosary service will be at 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 12, at the church. Memorials may be given to St. Agnes Academy or the Holy Rosary Catholic Church. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of the all arrangements.

James McAndrew, 76

(Oct. 11) ALLIANCE - James J. McAndrew, 76, died Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2001, at Clarkson Hospital in Omaha. He was born Jan. 15, 1925, in Shenandoah, Pa. to James J. and Edith M. (Jordan) McAndrew.

He enlisted in 1943 at the age of 18 in the U.S. Army Air Corp. He served nearly three years, primarily in England and Germany. He achieved the rank of sergeant before being honorably discharged in 1946 from Fort Meade, Md. He married Daisy Perry Feb. 17, 1945, in Cobridge, Stoke-On-Trent, England. Before moving to Alliance, Jim served as an accountant for the Locust Mountain Coal Company in Pennsylvania. Upon coming to Alliance, he was office manager for the Henry Fricke Construction Company before joining the accounting firm of Crum, Miller and Melick. He became a certified public accountant in 1966, practicing in Alliance and Bayard for 35 years, most recently with the accounting firm McAndrew and Johnson. He was a member and trustee of the First Baptist Church of Alliance. He also was a member of the Nebraska CPAs, American Legion Post #7, Alliance VFW, Fraternal Order of Eagles, B.P.O.E., Masonic Lodge and Tahama Temple Shrine Club. He is survived by his wife Daisy of the home, one daughter Gillian Salvador of Denver, Colo.; four sons, James E. of Johnston, Iowa, Gerald T. of Bellevue; Thomas J. of Beaver Crossing; and Kevin R. of Naples, Italy; 12 grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. He also is survived by two sisters, Peg Palachick of Catawissa, Pa. and Marcille Straub of Shenandoah, Pa. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Lila Welna and Doris Fredricks of Pennsylvania, and his twin brother Thomas of Alliance.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 13 at the First Baptist Church in Alliance with the Reverend James Rowe officiating. Burial with military rites will be in the Alliance Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the First Baptist Church of Alliance or to a charity of the donor's choice. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Dale M. Gering, 78

(Oct. 11) HAY SPRINGS - Dale Martin Gering, 78, died Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2002, at the VA Hospital at Hot Springs, S.D. He was born March 10, 1924, in rural Gering, to Charles and Pansy Gering. He was the youngest of five children.

He graduated from Gering High School in 1942. He then enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in Europe during World War II. On July 10, 1946, he married Patricia Ruth Dayton of Gering. After farming with his brother, Cleo, for two years near Gering, the couple moved to Mirage Flats in 1949. The family lived on Mirage Flats until 1963 when they moved to Hay Springs. He was self-employed in the dairy industry until his retirement. He bought cream, wool and was the local "Milk Man" for many years. He was active in local sports teams and was an avid sports fan his entire life. He is survived by his wife, Pat; sons, Chuck and Geary of Torrington, Wyo., Brad and Deb of Alliance, Marc, Mike and Cathy of Cheyenne, Wyo. and Troy of London, England; daughters Cretia and Dave Hadley of San Diego, Calif., Cinda and Dennis Koinzan of Stromburg and Lori Heiting of Hay Springs; 17 grand children; and seven great-grandchildren. He also is survived by brother, Cleo Gering of Gering; sisters, Mary Sylvester of Danville, Calif., and Vida Jacobs of Williamsville, Ore.; a large extended family and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Inez Dougherty; son, Doug; granddaughter, Nichol Koinzan; and son-in-law, Tim Heiting.

Mr. Gering's memorial service will be at 10 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 12, at the United Methodist Church of Hay Springs, with Rev. Eric Parker officiating. Burial of his ashes with Military Rites will be at the Hay Springs Cemetery. Memorials have been established for the Hay Springs Little League Baseball/Softball teams and the Hay Springs American Legion Post No. 239/ Memorials may b3 sent in care of Chamberlain-Drabbels, P.O. Box 443, Hay Springs, NE 69347-0443.

Lewis H. Roberts, 68

(Oct. 12) CEDAR CITY, Utah - Lewis Howell Roberts, 68, died Thursday, Oct. 5. He was born March 5, 1932, at Wellfleet, Neb. His parents were Lewis Howell Sr. and Elodia (DeVries) Roberts. He married Ardella Sellmer on June 4, 1955, at Bridgeport.

He was a truck driver for the Keebler Company, retiring in 1995. He was a member of VFW Post No. 9332. He is survived by his wife, Ardella Roberts, of Westminster, Colo; daughter Sheryl Weber of Arvada, Colo.; son Mark Roberts of Arvada, Colo; four grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter. His sisters also survive him, Nelta Herbert of Denver and Jean Lossi of Fort Collins, Colo.

Mr. Roberts' funeral was Monday, Oct. 9, at Rundus Funeral Home, Broomfield, Colo.

Iola T. Fawcett, 79

(Oct. 12) Iola T. Fawcett, 79, died Tuesday, Oct. 10, at her home in Alliance. She was born March 1, 1921, at Hyannis. Her parents were Thomas and Nellie (Bohart) Judge.

She was married to George Fawcett on Aug. 1, 1958, at Sturgis, S.D. Mr. Fawcett preceded her in death. Two daughters survive her, Cathie Conklin of Eugene, Ore., and Gail Kulas of Hemingford; her son, Tom Fawcett of Portland, Ore.; step-sons Jim Fawcett of Hamilton, Ala., and John Fawcett of Grand Forks, N.D.; four granddaughters; eight step-grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Her sister, Clara Conklin of Gering, also survives her.

Mrs. Fawcett's graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 14, at the Alliance Cemetery, with the Reverend Walter Cline officiating. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Make A Wish Foundation, and sent in care of Gail Kulas, 186 CR 62, Hemingford, NE 69348. Bates-Gould Funeral Home of Alliance is in charge of arrangements.

Donald A. Cox, 88

(Oct. 12) MULLEN - Donald Alexander Cox, 88, died Saturday, Oct. 7, at Hooker County. He was born May 7, 1912, at Calf Creek Valley. His parents were Minnie Kirk and Alexander Bryant Cox.

He attended rural school at District No. 40's Calf Creek precinct through the eighth grade, and graduate from Mullen High School in 1929. He attended the University of Nebraska for one year, returning home to work the family farm during the Depression years. He married Donna Grayson Osborn on Aug. 23, 1935, at North Platte, and established their home on the Cox Ranch. Mrs. Cox died in 1994.

He was a member of the Methodist Church, Cherry Creek Extension Board, Mullen Masonic Lodge and Scottish Rite. He also served as president of the Nebraska Section of the International Society of Range Management, and as chairman of the International Society of Range Management. He is survived by his daughter Beverly Franch and son Marvin Cox, both of Mullen; six grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Cox's funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 14, at the United Methodist Church in Mullen, with Rev. Mark Danielson officiating. Burial will be in Cedarview Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. MDT Friday at Mullen Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the United Methodist Church or Eastern Star Children's Home, c/o Box 87, Mullen, NE 69152; or Don Cox NE Range Society Scholarship.

Charlie Tschacher, 16

(Oct. 12) NORFOLK - Charles Leonard Tschacher, 16, died Monday, Oct. 8, 2001, at Norfolk. He was born Sept. 24, 1985, at Alliance. His parents were Kay Hardin and Leonard Tschacher.

He attended rural schools in the Alliance and Chadron areas, then Chadron Middle School and High School. He was in his sophomore year at Norfolk Senior High. While in the Chadron area he played baseball, football, and basketball and wrestled. He attended a trip with the United Methodist Youth Group to Denver, Colo., where one of the highlights was helping to serve a meal at a city mission. He also traveled to Washington, D.C. with students from Chadron City Schools. He worked at Camp Norwesca and McDonalds at Chadron. He was currently employed at Whiskey Creek Steak House at Norfolk. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing video and computer games and spending time with his friends and younger brother, Logan. He enjoyed being outdoors and working with his father. He enjoyed trips to the Ozarks, the Great Passion Play and Yellowstone National Park with his family. He was a member of the Chadron United Methodist Youth Group and a confirmed member of the Chadron United Methodist Church. He is survived by his father, Leonard Tschacher of O'Neill; mother and stepfather, Kay and Kent Hardin of Norfolk; and one brother, Logan of Norfolk. He also is survived by his grandmother Bernice Mitchell of Sterling, Colo.

Mr. Tschacher's funeral will be at 10 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 13 at the United Methodist Church at Chadron, with Rev. Jon Albrecht and Rev. K.F. Kaleuati officiating. Burial will be in Hemingford Cemetery. A Rosary service will be held at 7 p.m., Friday, Oct. 12 at Chamberlain Chapel at Chadron. A memorial has been established to the United Methodist Church Youth Group and Chadron City Schools. Donations may be sent to Chamberlain Chapel, P.O. Box 907, Chadron, NE 69337. Chamberlain Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
