Donald D. Brodrick, 79

(Oct. 16) CHADRON - Donald D. Brodrick, 79, died Oct. 13, 2001, at his home. He was born March 4, 1922 at Chadron. His parents were Ralph and Alma (Henning) Brodrick.

He was a member of The American Legion, VFW, Chadron Elks Lodge 1399 and the USS Asiatic Fleet. He is survived by daughters, Sherry Rhoads and husband Ed of Alliance and Teri Childs of North Platte; sons, Don Brodrick and wife Sandy and Jim Brodrick and wife Cindy all of Chadron; step-son Jim Rogers and wife Patty of Wenatchee, Wash.; 18 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. He also is survived by his brothers Julian Brodrick and wife Doris of Rapid City, S.D. and Dean Brodrick and wife Margie.

Mr. Brodrick's funeral will be at 2 p.m., Friday, Oct. 19 at First Baptist Church at Chadron, with Pastor Richard Sutterlin officiating. A memorial has been established for Chadron Sharing and Caring Christmas Dinner. Donations may be sent to First National Bank of Chadron. Chamberlain Chapel of Chadron is in charge of arrangements.

Mable P. Kozal, 91

(Oct. 17) CHADRON - Mable P. Kozal, 91, died Monday, Oct. 7, 2002, at Crestview Care Center. She was born May 24, 1911, on a ranch south of Chadron, to Edwin and Edna (Thomson) Mann.

She was married to Frank William Jezek of Hemingford on April 24, 1924. They farmed and ranched in the Table Communities for many years. He preceded her in death on March 26, 1962. She was married to Lawrence Kozal on Nov. 26, 1964. They made their home south of Chadron. He preceded her in death on Jan. 2, 1981. She was a teacher in Dawes and Box Butte Counties all of her teaching career. She is survived by one son, Robert (Delores) Jezek of Littleton, Colo.; sister-in-law, Evelyn Mann of Chadron; and many relatives and family. She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands; daughter, Ina Jezek; brothers Charles, Thomas and Jack Mann; and sister, Eva Hussey.

Mrs. Kozal's funeral was at 11 a.m., Friday, Oct. 11, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, with Fr. Ed Courtney officiating. Burial was at Calvary Cemetery. Vigil services were at 7 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 10. At the church. Chamberlain Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

Grace L. Brost, 85

(Oct. 18) ALLIANCE - Grace L. Brost, 85, died Tuesday, Oct. 17, at her home in Alliance. She was born May 26, 1915, at Central City, to Andrew and Laura Jane (Mahanna) Ibson. Grace graduated from Central City High School in 1933 and moved to Alliance in 1941.

On Oct. 14, 1952, she married Walter W. Brost. She worked in an attorney's office, and worked for many years in the Employees Credit Union. Grace was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, and the Eagles Auxiliary where she worked as the auditor for 40 years.

Her survivors are her children, Rose Mary and Larry Kopf of Richland, Wash., and Walt Brost of Colfax, Wash.;. and nieces Joyce Lavant of Belle Plaine, Iowa; and Patricia Lapinsky of Phoenix, Ariz.; nine Grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. Her parents, husband, three brothers and one sister preceded her in death.

Mrs Brost's funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 21 at the Bates-Gould Chapel in Alliance, with The Reverend Ed Hunzeker officiating. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery. Memorials may be given to Prairie Haven Hospice, P.O. Box 21, Alliance, NE 69301. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Helen B. Mayer, 99

(Oct. 18) CHADRON - Helen B. Mayer, 99, died Monday, Oct. 16, at Crestview Care Cent4er in Chadron. She was born March 20, 1901, at Rochelle, Il. Her parents were William and Mary Alice (Birden) Jones. She is survived by two granddaughters, including Lois Yoakum of Chadron.

Her graveside service will be at Hope Cemetery in Lemon Grove, Calif. Chamberlain Chapel of Chadron is in charge of arrangements.

Joy L. Morley, 77

(Oct. 18) CHADRON - Joy L. Morley, 77, died Monday, Oct. 16, at Crestview Care Center in Chadron. She was born Jan. 1, 1923, at Sac City, Iowa. Her parents were Lloyd and Pearl (Campbell) Gates.

Her husband, Lucien, died in 1997. She is survived by her son, Timothy Morley of Hartford, Wis.; daughters, Pamela Heiser of Chadron and Ann Jernberg of Hartford; and six grandchildren. Mrs. Morley's body has been cremated.

Her memorial service will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 26, at United Methodist Church in Chadron, with Rev. Kelo Kaleuat officiating. Memorials may be made to the Chadron Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department, in care of Community First Bank of Chadron. Chamberlain Chapel of Chadron is in charge of arrangements.

Peter L. Madden, 69

(Oct. 18) SCOTTSBLUFF - Peter Logan Madden, 69, died Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2001, at his home. He was born Sept. 29, 1932, at Oshkosh. His parents were Peter Leo and Ithyl (Billingsley) Madden.

He graduated from Garden County High School in 1950. He served in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1955, and worked is Oshkosh, Grant and Alliance following his discharge. He married Buelah Joyce "B.J." Glassmeyer Nov. 12, 1960, at Alliance. He worked as a X-ray technician and teacher at Denver, then owned and operated Western Manufacturing Co. at Scottsbluff. He served as a substitute X-ray tech for Panhandle area hospitals until his death. He was a member of the American Legion, ASRT and CSRT, and was ARRT certified. He is survived by his wife B.J. of the home; and sisters, Eva Ditsch of Alliance, Myrtie Kurkowski of Grant and Frances Wernke of Fullerton, Calif.

Mr. Madden's funeral will be at 10:30 a.m., Friday, Oct. 19 at Christ the King Catholic Church in Gering, with Father Gerald Harr officiating. Burial will be at 1 p.m., Monday, Oct. 22 at Fort Logan National Cemetery with military honors by the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Memorials may be given to the family to be used to a scholarship fund. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 18 at Jolliffe Funeral Home at Scottsbluff, and from 9 a.m. until service time, Friday, Oct. 19 at the church.

Beulah L. Driml, 92

(Oct. 18) ALLIANCE - Beulah L. Driml, 92, died Wednesday, October 16, 2002 at Box Butte General Hospital. She was born June 22, 1910, at Mason City to John D. and Susie (Rumary) Sims.

She was married to Louis Driml on Feb. 2, 1928, at Broken Bow. She was a member of the First Baptist Church. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Carol Driml of Alda; sons, Norman Driml of Long Beach, Calif., and Frank Driml of Lake Elsinore, Calif.; 13 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. She also is survived by her sister, Bernice Tieso of Sunnyvale, Calif.; and daughter-in-law, Shirley Driml of McCook. Her parents, husband, son Richard, two brothers, seven sisters, and one great-grandchild preceded her in death.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Monday, Oct. 21, at First Baptist Church, with Rev. Don Mink officiating. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the John D. Sims Memorial Park, in care of Robert Driml, 4954 West Highway 30, Lot 5, Alda, NE, 68810. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Ardes L. Van Houten, 84

(Oct. 19) SHERIDAN, Wyo. - Ardes L. Van Houten, 84, longtime resident of Alliance, died Wednesday, Oct. 18, at Westview Health Care Center in Sheridan, Wyo. She was born Oct. 3, 1916, at Antioch, Neb. Her parents were William R. and Rebecca Brown. She was raised in Antioch, and graduated from Antioch High School.

She was married to Dan Orley Van Houten on Nov. 22, 1937, at Alliance. Mr. Van Houten died Oct. 2, 1988. She was a homemaker, and enjoyed dancing and gardening. The couple lived in Alliance for many years while Mr. Van Houten was employed by Burlington Northern Railroad. After being transferred to many locations, the couple returned to Alliance in the 1970s. After Mr. Van Houten's retirement in 1984, the couple moved to Sheridan.

She is survived by her two daughters, Sharon Jensen of Boise, Idaho, and Nancy Schaffer of Sheridan, Wyo.; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. She also is survived by her brother, William Brown of Sheridan. Mrs. Van Houten's private family graveside service will be Saturday, Oct. 21, at Elks Cemetery in Sheridan, with Rev. Doug Goodwin officiating. Memorials may be made to Westview Health Care for "Care Haven," in care of Delphine Tower, First Interstate Bank, P.O. Box 2007, Sheridan, WY 82801.

Rev. Erling O. Duus, 60

(Oct. 19) NEW MEXICO - The Reverend Erling O. Duus, 60, a former minister of the Hemingford Congregational Church, died Tuesday, Oct. 17, at the home of his brother in New Mexico. He was born on July 12, 1940, the son of the Reverend Vagn Duus, a Lutheran minister.

Erling Duus graduated from Northern Iowa University in 1962 with a B.A. in History. He later received his Master's degrees from Indiana University (History, 1965) and Vanderbilt University (Divinity, 1970). In addition to serving as a Congregational minister in Hemingford, and in Utah and Arizona, he worked for seven years as a minister in the Unitarian-Universalist Association and for six years in the South Dakota Conference of the United Methodist Church. His writings include "Danish American Journey," "American Christianity" and the "American Church, The Tragic, Sacred Ground, Jesus Walks in the Garden of the Parque Central and Other Honduran Essays," as well as numerous essays.

His "The Dying of Protestantism" appeared in the theological journal Prism. He served as national chairman of the Folk School Association of America in the 1980s, and has worked and taught in Honduras for the last several years. He is survived by his brother Verner and sister Sybil. REQUIESCAT IN PACE. .

Desma E. Doyle, 94

(Oct. 19) ALLIANCE - Desma E. Doyle, 94, died Tuesday, Oct. 17, at Good Samaritan Health Care Center. She was born July 3, 1906, at Lucas, Iowa. Her parents were Harley and Cozette (Scott) Niswender. Her family moved to Gillette, Wyo. in 1919.

She was married to Kenneth E. Doyle on March 4, 1926, at Gillette. Mr. Doyle preceded her in death. The couple moved to Alliance in 1930. She worked for many years as a nurse's aid at St. Joseph's Hospital. She was a member of the First Christian Church, Royal Neighbors, Rebekah's, Eagles Auxiliary and the Gold Age Club.

She is survived by her son Harley Doyle of Alliance; three grandchildren, including Joyce Lundy of Alliance; and nine great-grandchildren. Mrs. Doyle's memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 23, at the Bates-Gould Chapel in Alliance, with The Reverend Walter Cline and Reverend Mark Schutt officiating. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Prairie Haven Hospice or to the First Christian Church.

Paul A. Kunzman, 73

(Oct. 19) ALLIANCE - Paul A. Kunzman, 73, died Thursday, Oct. 18, 2001, at Box Butte General Hospital. He was born in Osmond on Oct. 27, 1927, to Albert and Irene (Krings) Kunzman.

His family moved to Alliance in June 1938. He graduated from St. Agnes Academy in 1945. After serving in the U.S. Army in Japan from 1946 to 1948, he was employed by the U.S. Postal Service in Alliance until 1957. He worked as an insurance adjuster and salesman and later purchased an abstracting business in 1968. He retired from Kunzman Title Company in 1994. He married Aggie Dillon on Aug. 18, 1953, at Holy Rosary Church in Alliance. He coached boys' basketball, golf, and girls' basketball at St. Agnes for more than 30 years. He was elected to the St. Agnes School Board and the St. Agnes Foundation, and was a Box Butte County Commissioner from 1971 to 1974. He was on the committee to build the Alliance Golf Course and the present clubhouse building, and was on the Board and served as president of the Panhandle Men's Club. Instrumental in bringing State Golf Match Play to Alliance in 1955 and State Stroke Play in 1956 and 1975, he helped to establish the Nebraska Panhandle Senior's Golf Association, of which he was secretary from 1967 until his death. He served on the Nebraska Golf Association for 16 years and the Nebraska Golf Hall of Fame Committee, and was President of the Panhandle Golf Association and served on the Board for 25 years. Ten times he won the City of Alliance Golf Championship. He was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, the Elks Club, the American Legion, the Eagles Club, and Panhandle Men's Golf Association.

He is survived by his wife, Aggie; his sister Vonnie Elliott of Hereford, Texas; by his seven children, Sheri Bottger of Lincoln, Ed Kunzman of Chicago, Ill., Carol Kleinsasser, Billy Kunzman, Sandi Willey and Jane McGhehey, all of Alliance, and Anne Grubb of Hurst, Texas; his grandchildren, Andrea Kreger, Kristin Bottger, Sean Bottger, Jared Moscrip, Casey Moscrip, Hilary Moscrip, Paige Kunzman, Ri Kunzman, Brianna Thompson, Rahne Kunzman, Billie Kunzman, Richard Willey, Aaron Willey, Gretchen Willey, Jill McGhehey, Conor McGhehey, Tate McGhehey, Molly McGhehey, Elizabeth Grubb and Sarah Grubb; and great-grandson Joseph Kreger. His parents preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Monday, Oct. 22 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church. Fr. Bryan Ernest and Fr. Vince Parsons will officiate. Burial with military rites will be in Calvary Cemetery. A wake service will be at 6 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 21 at Holy Rosary Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the St. Agnes Foundation, 1104 Cheyenne, Alliance or to a charity of the donor's choice. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Larry R. Shetler, 56

(Oct. 19) DELTA JUNCTION, Alaska - Larry Roger Shetler, 56, died Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2001, of a sudden heart attack. He was born Aug. 2, 1945, at Ft. Myers, Fla. His parents were Zelden "Shorty" and Delores (Brown) Shetler.

He grew up and attended school at Alliance until his graduation when he moved to Ottawa, Kan. He served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam. He married Gail Carmichael Sept. 9, 1978, at Delta Junction. He worked as an electrician and high power lineman at Fort Greeley Army Base. He was the coach of the Delta Junction High School Rifle Team, and was extremely proud of his son Mike who shot in the Junior Olympics last summer. He is survived by his wife, Gail Shetler; and 18-year-old son Robert Carmichael "Mike" Shetler both of Delta Junction. He also is survived by two sisters, Donna Peckham of Rogers Ark., and Diane Pilmer of Meridian, Idaho; niece, Shawn Curran, nephews, Scott Peckham, Brent Peckham, Jeff Cunningham, Todd Peckham and Chad Peckham; nine aunts and uncles; and numerous cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents.

A memorial has been established to the University of Alaska Fairbanks Rifle Team. Donations and condolences may be sent to the family, Gail and Mike Shetler, P. O. Box 534, Delta Junction, AK 99737. Cremation will be at the Chapel of the Chimes at Fairbanks, Alaska, with a Memorial service on Saturday, Oct. 27 at Delta Junction.
