Infant, Erin Lyn Hawk

(Nov. 14) ERIE, Colo. Ð Erin Lyn Hawk of Erie, Co. died Tuesday, Nov. 7 at Avista Hospital in Louisville, Co. The daughter of Troy M. Hawk and Traci L. Kramer Hawk, she was born Nov. 7.

Survivors include her parents and sister Emmily of Erie; paternal grandparents Jim and Jeryl Hawk of Alliance; maternal grandparents, Marlene Kramer of Grant and Terry and Leanna Kramer of Ogallala; two great grandmothers, Maxine Culton of Alliance and Lucille Grover of Ogallala.

Memorial services were held Sunday, November 12, at the First United Methodist Church in Lafayette, Co. The Rev. Linda Wells officiated. Avalon Funeral Home in Lafayette was in charge of arrangements.

George H. Paist, 70

(Nov. 14) HEMINGFORD - George Howard Paist, 70, died Nov. 13, 2002, at the Hemingford Community Care Center with his family by his side. He was born Mar. 5, 1932, at Hyannis, to Howard Eugene and Elsie (Osgood) Paist.

He graduated from Hemingford High School in 1951. He moved to Virginia and owned and operated his own plumbing business. He married Dolores (Price) Curtis on May 15, 2000. He is survived by his wife Dolores; children Carla Monroe of Carey, N.C., Sarah Hutchinson of Moorseville, N.C., Mark Paist of McLean, Va., David Curtis of Omaha, Alan Curtis of Pine Bluffs, Wyo., Carolyn Campbell and Brent Curtis of Hemingford; 15 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He also is survived by his sister Roberta (Bertie) Conlon of McLean, Va. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Betty (Holzworth) Long, brother Richard Holzworth and grandson Nathan Curtis. At his request no funeral will be held.

There will be a celebration of his life on from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 16, at his home at 520 Box Butte Ave., Hemingford, hosted by his wife and children. Memorials may be given to Prairie Haven Hospice or Hemingford Community Care Center. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Margaret Ettle, 80

(Nov. 14) ALLIANCE - Margaret Vernelle Cox Ettle, 80, died Nov. 12, 2002, at her winter Arizona home at Tucson, Ariz. She was born Feb. 7, 1922, to Purl and Minnie (Whitaker) Stone at Mitchell.

She graduated from Mitchell High School in 1940 and went to work for the Union Pacific Railroad; later she worked for and retired from Burlington Northern Railroad. She is survived by her husband Dale Ettle; son Anthony Cox of Kansas City, Kan.; daughter: Cathy Freeman of Cerrus, Calif.; grandchildren: Jaimi Freeman, Steven Cox, Denton Campbell, Rebecca and Sterling Wells, Adam and Michelle Scott, and great-granddaughter, Boadecia Skye Campbell. She also is survived by her mother-in-law, Vesta Ettle of Alliance; daughters-in-law, Kathleen Novak, Gillette, Wyo., Junetta Wells and Diane Scott of Weatherford, Texas; and brothers, Warren Stone of Mitchell, Roger Stone of Bethany, Mo., and John Stone of Dodge City, Kan. She was preceded in death by her parents, four sisters and one brother.

A memorial service will be held at Alliance at a later date. Memorials may be given to Hospice or the donor's choice.

Leonard J. Abbott, 79

(Nov. 14) ALLIANCE - Leonard James "Jack" Abbott, 79, died Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2002 at his home. He was born Aug. 5, 1923, at Whitman to Willard and Frances (Gadient) Abbott.

He served in the U.S. Navy for four years in the European Theatre as a signalman. On July 27, 1946, he married Mildred Stoner and they have lived in Alliance for 56 years. He worked for A.H. Jones Co. for 15 years before going to work for the Post Office where he worked for 28 years as a letter carrier. Following his retirement he drove the Senior Bus for part-time for several years. He is survived by his wife Mildred; sons and daughters-in-law, Thomas and Marjorie Abbott of Scottsbluff, and William and Lylaine Abbott of Lincoln; granddaughters Amanda and Lisa Abbott, and grandsons Justin Abbott and Jason (Laura 0 Abbott. He also is survived by several nieces and a nephew. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Jean Crum. He was a member of Holy Rosary Church, American Legion Post 7 and Eagles.

Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 16, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, with Fr. Vince Parsons officiating. Burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery. A wake service will be at 7 p.m., Friday, Nov. 15 at Holy Rosary Church. Memorials may be given to Holy Rosary Church, Prairie Haven Hospice, Senior Center, Nebraska Boys Ranch or to a charity of the donor's choice. Bates-Gould Funeral Home of Alliance is in charge of arrangements.

Rose L. Christian, 69

(Nov. 15) ALLIANCE - Rose L. Christian died Monday, Nov. 13, at Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff. She was 69. She was born Jan. 8, 1931, at Burwell, Neb., to Frank and Mary (Mach) Janicek.

She married Dean Sample on Dec. 23, 1947. He preceded her in death. She then married Barry Christian on Dec. 31, 1976, in Alliance. He also preceded her in death, as well as her parents, sons Erwin and Alton and a sister, Evelyn Turvey.

Survivors are her children, Dianne Arnold of Lyons, Colo., Bruce Sample of Scottsbluff, Dwayne Sample of Lincoln, Danny Sample and Darcy Sample of Alliance, Aldon Sample of Arthur, Wendy Mohler of Alliance; sisters, Lorraine Barker of Cheyenne, Wyo., Darlene Halm of Grand Island, Neb.; 21 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Friday, Nov. 17, at 2:00 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Alliance. The Reverend Mark Schutt will officiate. Burial will be in the Hemingford Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the United Methodist Church or to the Alliance Volunteer Fire Department. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Doris E. Schenbeck Colson, 90

(Nov. 15) GERING - Doris Eilene Schenbeck Colson, 90, of Gering died Monday, Nov. 13, at Beverly Healthcare. She was born July 16, 1910, at Neosha Falls, Kan. Her parents were Frank and Olive (Spencer) Schenbeck. She graduated from Gering High School in 1927, and attended the St. Joseph School of Nursing in Denver.

She was married to Robert B. Colson in 1931 at Lexington, after which the couple moved to Gering Valley to begin farming and ranching. Upon retirement, they moved into Gering and developed the Colson Addition. Mr. Colson preceded her in death. She was a member of the Gering Methodists Church, a co-leader for the Robidoux Livestock 4-H club and a longtime member of the North Platte Valley Historical Society.

She is survived by her sons, Don Colson of Alliance and Leo Colson of North Platte; daughter Marilyn Reinmuth of Gering; 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She also is survived by her sisters, Florence Colson of Grant and Lois Stewart of American Fork, Utah.

Mrs. Colson's funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 17, at Dugan-Kramer Funeral Chapel, with Rev. John Reinmuth officiating. Burial will be in West Lawn Cemetery in Gering. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. Wednesday, and from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. Thursday. Memorials may be made to Nebraska Children's Home.

Lois F. Fairhead, 73

(Nov. 15) MERRIMAN - Lois F. Fairhead, 73, died Tuesday, Nov. 13 at her home at rural Merriman. She was born June 13, 1928, at Hyannis. Her parents were Howard E. and Ruth (Lee) Lichty.

She was married to Joy C. Fairhead Feb. 1, 1948, at Alliance. She was a 53-year resident of the Merriman Community. She was a member of the Church of God at Gordon, and had previously been a member of the Eastern Star, D.S.R. and the Nebraska Cattlewomen. She and her husband had taken special interest in the Black Hills C.F.O. She is survived by her husband Joy C. Fairhead of the home; son John Fairhead of Merriman; daughters Sarah Crouse of Lincoln, Nancy Gompert of Mitchell and Mary Young of Gordon; and 13 grandchildren.

Mrs. Fairhead's funeral will be at 2 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 17, at the Church of God at Gordon, with Rev. Harlen Wheeler officiating. Burial will be in the Gordon Cemetery. Cicmanec-Chamberlain-Pier Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Coralee Lee, 78

(Nov. 15) ALLIANCE - Coralee Lee, 78, died Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2002 at Box Butte General Hospital. She was born the only child of Clay Owen "String" and Ethel Mae (Todd) Beagle on Oct. 7, 1924, at Alliance.

She attended Alliance schools and graduated from Alliance High School in 1942. She was married to 1st Lieutenant John Lombardi at the chapel of the Alliance Air Base on Nov. 21, 1942. He preceded her in death in 1984. She later married Kenneth "Dobby" Lee at Filer, Idaho, Oct. 17,1987. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 7, the VFW Auxiliary, the Eagles, and Eastern Star. She is survived by her husband, Kenneth "Dobby" Lee of Alliance; daughter and son-in-law, Diane and Butch Greiffendorf of Breedsville,Mich.; daughter, Gina R. Lombardi, and son-in-law, Tom Case of Alliance; son, Joseph M. Lombardi of League City, Texas; step-daughter and son-in-law, Debra E. and Mark Schroeder of West Point; and step-son and daughter-in-law, Dennis E. and Liz Lee of Alliance; grandchildren, Rick Greiffendorf, and Clay O. Greiffendorf, both of Michigan, John Lombardi of Ohio, Lori Lombardi, J. Michael Lombardi, Jr., and Arianna Lombardi, all of Texas; step-grandchildren, Phillip Lee of Maryland, and David Schroeder and Jeff Schroeder of Nebraska; great-grandchildren, Rick Greiffendorf, Jr. and Brenden Greiffendorf of Michigan, Lily Marie Lombardi-Hobbs of Texas, and Madison Elizabeth Lombardi of Ohio; and step-great grandchild, Morgan Lee of Maryland. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband John Lombardi.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 16, at the First Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Dr. Stephen Roosa officiating. Memorials may be given to the Coralee Lee Memorial Scholarship Fund in care of Community First National Bank, P.O. Drawer A, Alliance, Nebraska 69301. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Rose Swanson, 90

(Nov. 15) ALLIANCE - Rose Swanson, 90, died Thursday, Nov. 14,2002, at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home. She was born Dec. 15, 1911, at Alliance, to Karl and Margaret (Weinell) Kohrman.

She was married to Carl Swanson at Chadron on Feb. 24, 1936. Except for a few years at Mitchell, she lived her entire life in Alliance. She worked at St. Joseph's Hospital for a number of years. She was a member of the United Methodist Church and RSVP . She is survived by her children Don Hoppe and Leroy (Judy) Swanson of California, and Floyd (Barbara) Swanson of Alliance; ten grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren. She also is survived by her sisters Anna Forsstrom and Margaret Ridgely both of Alliance; and numerous nieces and nephews. Her husband, a son, one grandson, her parents, two brothers and two sisters preceded her in death.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 30, at Bates-Gould Funeral Home in Alliance. Memorials are suggested to the Methodist Church, the Knight Museum Partners or the Special Care Unit at Good Samaritan Nursing Home.

Albert Reddish, 77

(Nov. 16) ALLIANCE - Albert T. Reddish, a longtime Alliance attorney, died Tuesday, Nov. 14, at Rapid City Regional Hospital. He was 77. Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 18, at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church in Alliance with the Reverend Paul Mottl officiating. Inurnment will be in St. Matthew's Episcopal Church Columbarium.

He was born Sept. 27, 1923, in Alliance to Robert O. and Ruth (Tibbitts) Reddish. On May 28, 1976, he was married to Marilyn Ashley in Alliance. Reddish's education included the Alliance Public Schools and the University of Nebraska where he received his B.A. in 1945. He then attended the University of Michigan Law College where he received his Juris Doctorate in 1948 and was admitted to the Nebraska State Bar that year.

He returned home to Alliance to practice with his father who had been a longtime lawyer in Alliance. His first community service included being a member of the Board of Education from 1951 to 1959, and he was president of the board in 1957 to 1958. As a member of the 16th Judicial District Bar Association, he became president in 1971-1973. He later became President of the Western Nebraska Bar Association. His service in the Nebraska State Bar Association included being a member of the Real Estate Practice Guidelines Committee beginning in 1954 and he was Chairman of such committee from1992-1995.

He served on the Executive Committee of the section of Real Estate Practice Probate and Trust Law from 1959-1965. He became Chairman of the Unauthorized Practice of Law Committee in 1955 and continued as such until 1969. He was a member of the Executive Committee of Taxation Section from 1962-1965, and he served in the Nebraska Bar House of Delegates representing the 16th Judicial District from 1973-1977. In 1975 he became Chairman of the Forms Standardization Committee until 1984.

He was a member of the American Bar Association during his practice and was a Fellow in the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel. Reddish became an expert in Estate Planning, Probate, Taxation and Real Estate Law. He wrote many seminar papers and lectured at many seminars conducted by the Nebraska Continuing Legal Education Program. Among his many awards from the Nebraska State Bar Association were the George Turner Award and the Nebraska State Bar Foundation Outstanding Legal Educator Award. He received his 50-year of practice of law Certificate in 1998. Mr. Reddish was also a member of St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, Masonic Lodge No. 183 A.F.& A.M., Elks, Order of Eastern Star and served for several years on the Alliance Library Board.

His survivors are his wife Marilyn; children, Albert "Tibb" Reddish of Lincoln, Jim Benish and Tom Reddish of Grand Island, Nancy Youngman of Lincoln, Scott Ashley of Glendale, Ariz., Steve Ashley of Rapid City, S.D., and Paula Christiansen of Yuma, Ariz.; and 8 grandchildren. His parents, one brother and one sister preceded him in death.

Memorials may be given to St. Matthew's Church, Alliance Public Library Learning Center, Carnegie Arts Center or to a charity of the donor's choice. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Susann Runs Along The Edge-Red Bear, 40

(Nov. 16) ALLEN, S.D. - Susann Runs Along The Edge-Red Bear, 40, died Thursday, Nov. 14, 2002.

She is survived by sons, Frank Red Bear and Moses Red Bear, both of Allen, Brian Red Bear, Darren Red Bear and Kadin Red Bear, of Alliance; daughter Pearl Red Bear of Nashville, Tenn.; and numerous grandchildren. She also is survived by her father, William Whirlwind Horse of Allen; brothers, Raymond Whirlwind Horse and Mike Whirlwind Horse, of Alliance, Paul Whirlwind Horse of Chadron, John Whirlwind Horse and Moses Whirlwind Horse, all of Allen; ans sisters Verna Sanchez and Maria Whirlwind Horse of Alliance, Cheryl Hedelson of Hannibal, Mo., Pauline Hairy Shirt and Molly and Martha Whirlwind Horse of Allen, Billy Whirlwind Horse of Batesland, S.D., and Crystal Whirlwind Horse of Chadron.

Her funeral will be at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Nov. 20, at St. John of the Cross Catholic Church, with Rev. Frank Smith, officiating, A two-night wake will begin at 1 p.m., Monday, Nov. 18, at the church. Burial will be in St. John of the Cross Catholic Cemetery. Sioux Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Willadell De Haven, 77

(Nov. 17) CRAWFORD - Willadell De Haven, 77, died Wednesday, Nov. 15, at Ponderosa Villa in Crawford. Her survivors include grandson Michael Baker of Alliance. Mrs. De Haven's funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 20, at Memorial United Methodist Church, with Rev. Henrietta Stemley officiating.
