Zelma L. Waltman, 81

(Dec. 8) CHADRON - Zelma L. Waltman, 81, died Wednesday, Dec. 6, at Crest View Care Center in Chadron. She was born July 13, 1919, at Wood Lake, Neb. Her parents were John and Sadie (Downing) Day. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary.

She is survived by three daughters, Patricia Crapson of Wauneta, Claudette Gust of Rapid City and Edwina Leischer of Loveland, Colo.; 26 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Waltman's funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 11, at Chamberlain Chapel in Chadron, with Pastor Rod Smith officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery at Chadron. Memorials may be made to Chadron Senior Center or Chadron Community Center, in care of Chamberlain Chapel, P.O. Box 970, Chadron, NE 69337. Chamberlain Chapel of Chadron is in charge of arrangements.

Gene Grimes, 70

(Dec. 9) ALLIANCE - Gene Grimes, 70, died Saturday, Dec. 7, 2002, at his home. He was born Dec. 10, 1931, near Russell, Iowa, to Frank and Thelna (Garrett) Grimes.

He was in the United States Army from 1951 to 1953. He was a rancher for his grandparents for 29 years, a farmer, and owner of Grimes Trucking for 40 years. He was a former member of PRCA and the Old Timers Rodeo Association. He also was a member of the Eagles and American Legion. He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann; sons and daughters-in-law, Sid and Carolyn, Larry and Vickie of Alliance, Ron and Janet of Ellsworth, Wes and Sheryl of Hot Springs, S.D., Will and Candice of Keystone, S.D., and John and Miranda of Austin, Texas; daughters Karen Adams of Sturgis, S.D., and Barb and Pat Hill of Orangevale, Calif.; two step-children Cliff and wife Tish and Michelle of Tampa, Fla.; 14 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He also is survived by brothers Walter of Chariton, Iowa, and Bill and wife Kathy of Newton, Iowa; sister Elna and husband Bill Lambert of Milford. His parents and an infant brother preceded him in death.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 10, at the funeral home. Cremation will then take place followed by a graveside service at 10 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 12 at the Alliance Cemetery, with Rev. Jerry Mercer officiating. The family prefers memorials be given to a charity of the donor's choice. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Frank Marquez Sr., 93

(Dec. 9) SCOTTSBLUFF - Frank Lawrence Marquez Sr. 93, died Saturday, Dec. 7, 2002, at his home, surrounded by his family. He was born Aug. 10, 1909, at La Calera, Gto, Mexico, the son of Amador A. and Micaela (Mendez) Marquez.

The family moved to Chanute, Kan., when he was seven years old. He attended Wolcott Elementary School at Chanute. He worked for the Sante Fe Railroad as a laborer for many years prior to his marriage. On June 22, 1929, he married Mary Louise Hernandez at Chanute. During the depression, the couple went to Minnesota to work the sugar beet campaigns. They moved to the Stegall community in 1933 where Frank worked for various farmers. He enjoyed driving truck during beet and wheat harvest. He retired in 1982 and the couple moved to Scottsbluff in 1993. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church at Lyman, and most recently, St. Agnes Catholic Church at Scottsbluff. He is survived by his wife Louise Marquez of Scottsbluff; children Anthony (Ruby) Marquez of Gering, Richard (Christina) Marquez of Thornton, Colo., Daniel C. (Dolores) Marquez of Torrington, Wyo., Frank Marquez, Jr. of Alliance, Victor (Linda) Marquez of Chesterfield, Va., Julie (Larry) Mason of Scottsbluff, Mike (Florence) Marquez of Cheyenne, Wyo., Margie Ernest of Gering, Ralph (Eloise) Marquez of Mitchell, and Andrew Marquez of Scottsbluff; 45 grandchildren; 68 great-grandchildren; 8 step-great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. He also is survived by his brother Threnee Marquez of Scottsbluff; sisters Lenore Marquez of Scottsbluff and Domitila Cabral of Lakewood, Colo.; several nieces and nephews; and special family friends Daren Sever and Roberta Rudden both of Alliance. His parents, son Frederick, infant daughter Rosalie, two brothers Ignacio and Theodore, two infant sisters, two grandchildren; and sisters-in-law Frances, Refugia, and Carmen preceded him in death.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, Dec. 11, at St. Agnes Catholic Church at Scottsbluff, with Father James O'Kane officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Scottsbluff. A vigil service will be conducted at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 10, at the church. Visitation will be from noon to 5 p.m., Tuesday at Jolliffe Funeral Home and prior to the vigil at church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Prairie Haven Hospice or to the family for a memorial to be designated at a later time.

David P. Stark, 90

(Dec. 10) ALLIANCE - David P. Stark, 90, died Friday, Dec. 7, 2001, at Box Butte General Hospital in Alliance. He was born Sept. 18, 1911 at Enid, Okla., to John E. and Ada (Miles) Stark.

His family moved to Alliance in his infancy. He married Bertha Buckley on Feb. 12, 1936, at Bridgeport. He farmed in the Alliance area until retiring in 1974. He was a member of the First Christian Church. His survivors include his sons and their wives, John and Sharon Stark of Clay Center, Robert and Beth Stark of Hastings, and Thomas and Donna Stark of LaVista; 13 grandchildren; 23 great- grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. He also is survived by one brother Jim Stark of Vancouver, Wash. His parents, wife, son Frank, daughter Ruth, and a brother Donald preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 11, at the First Christian Church, with Rev. Walter Cline officiating. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the First Christian Church. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Ted C. Hood, 40

(Dec. 10) ALLIANCE - Ted C. Hood, 40, of Alliance died Saturday, Dec. 8, 2001, at Torrington, Wyo. He was born Oct. 16, 1961, an Alliance to Earl T. and Kathryn M. (Odell) Hood.

On Feb. 15, 1980, he married Genie C. Lockridge. He worked as a sales representative for Simplot Soil Builders. He was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus. He is survived by his wife, Genie; daughter Amanda Hood and son William Hood both students at the University of Nebraska at Kearney. He also is survived by his mother Kathryn Hood of Alliance; brothers Tom Hood and John Hood of Alliance; sisters and brothers-in-law, Peggy and Dan Sindelar of Euless, Texas, Patty and Gary Kulas of Alliance, Cheri and Andy Phillips of Boyd, Texas, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Mary Rae and Greg Broekemier of Kearney, Ann and Gary Rammell Tetonia, Idaho, Joan and Tom Abbott of Gering; his aunt Loretta Hood of Alliance, and numerous nieces and nephews. His father preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Dec. 12, at Holy Rosary Church with Father Bryan Ernest officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. A wake service will be at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 11, at Holy Rosary Church. Memorials may be given to the Knights of Columbus or the American Heart Association. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Earl O. Bauer, 86

(Dec. 10) ALLIANCE- Earl Oren Bauer, 86, died Sunday, Dec. 9, 2001, at Highland Park Care Center. He was born August 20, 1915, in Box Butte County to Herman and Myrtle (Carey) Bauer.

He married Lillian Henderson Feb. 14, 1938, in Alliance. He ranched east of Alliance his entire life. He was a member of the United Methodist Church and he enjoyed his active membership in the Panhandle Country Music Association. He shared his love of music with the residents of all the area nursing homes and the former St. Joseph's Hospital. He is survived by his wife, Lillian; daughters and husbands, Betty and Theo Bedient of Hemingford and Kathy and Phil Ward of Lincoln; son and wife, Marvin and Shara Bauer of Ainsworth; six grandchildren, Kim and Cliff Payne, Brenda and Jerry Nunes, Roger and Suzanne Bedient, Matt and Denise Bauer all of Alliance, Rodney and Heather Bauer of Lincoln, Kenny and Jennifer Ward of Pearland, Texas; and13 great-grandchildren. He also is survived by his sister and her husband, Emily and Robert Messersmith of Alliance, and sister-in-law, Norma Prall of Alliance. His parents, three brothers, Oscar, Orville and Ralph Bill, and grandson James Bedient, and granddaughters-in-heart, Mary Lynn Bauer and Cheralee Hickman preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Wednesday, Dec.12, at the United Methodist Church in Alliance, with Rev. Mark Schutt officiating. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery. The Earl Bauer Memorial Fund has been established for the Alliance High School Music Department. Donations may be sent to Betty Bedient, 261 CR 70, Hemingford, NE 69348. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Larry E. Burk, 70

(Dec. 10) CHADRON - Larry E. Burk, 70, died Sunday, Dec. 8, 2002, at Chadron, Neb. He was born May 9, 1932, at Chadron. His parents were Earl E. and Maude M. (Burk) Burk.

He was a member of the Amateur Trap Shooting Association, American Legion and United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife Phyllis W. (Wilson) Burk of Chadron; sons Randy Burk of Chadron and Dr. Rick Burk of Tigard, Ore.; and two grandchildren. He also is survived by his brother Phillip Burk of Rhode Island; and two sisters, Betty McHenry and Cleo Nordstrom, both of Chadron.

Mr. Burk's funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 12, at The United Methodist Church in Chadron, with Rev. McCreary and K.F. Kaleuati officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery at Chadron. Memorials may be made to Chamberlain Chapel, P.O. Box 970, Chadron, NE 69337. Chamberlain Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mable Gross, 94

(Dec. 11) HEMINGFORD - Mable L. Gross of Hemingford died Monday, Dec. 11, 2000, at Box Butte General Hospital. She was 94. She was born June 4, 1906, at Carroll County, Iowa to John and Alvina (Hagge) Kaschube.

She graduated from Hyannis High School and attended Nebraska Wesleyan College and the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. She married John H. Gross on Dec. 19, 1928, in Hyannis. They moved to Hemingford in 1945. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Eastern Star American Legion Auxiliary of Hemingford.

Her parents, husband, and her brother Gerald Kaschube preceded her in death. Her survivor include a niece Dorothy Gross of Ainsworth, Neb., and her children and their families, and a sister-in-law Martha Kaschube of Mullen, Neb.

Funeral services will be Thursday, Dec. 14, at 2 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Hemingford. The Reverend Craig Collins will officiate. Burial will be in the Hemingford Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Hemingford Community Care Center or to a charity of the donor's choice. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Earl Jensen, 80

(Dec. 11) ALLIANCE - Earl S. Jensen, 80, passed away Saturday, Dec. 9, 2000, at Sacred Heart Hospital in Eau Claire, Wis. He was born Feb. 12, 1920, at Burton, Neb., to the late Hans and Hannah Jensen. During WWII he served in the Army from Jan. 1942 to Oct. 1945 in Puerto Rico and Antique. He married Gertrude Swanson on June 8, 1948. She preceded him in death on Feb. 28, 1996.

He moved to Chippewa Falls, Wis., in June 2000 from Alliance. In 1968 he moved to Alliance from Valentine, Neb., and owned Jensen Furniture of Alliance from 1968 to 1973. He worked for Burlington Northern Railroad from May 1977 to June 1987 when he retired.

He is survived by four children, Carol and Steve Young of Superior, Wis., Howard and Susan Jensen of Alliance; Wayne and Debbie Jensen of Sterling, Colo.; and Kathryn and Clyde Forsland of Chippewa Falls, WI; one sister, Ione Burkhardt of Washington State, eleven grandchildren: Brian and Jeffrey Young both from Superior, WI; Michelle Young and Jeanette Bolinger from Alliance, Josh and Chad Jensen from Alliance; twins Luke and Laura Jensen from Sterling, Colo., and Kelsie, Christopher and Kendra Forsland of Chippewa Falls, Wis.; and four great-grandchildren: Dylan, Shelbie and Austin of Alliance; and Zachary from Superior, Wis.; several nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends. He was also preceded in death by four sisters.

Funeral services will be Friday, Dec. 15, at 10:30 AM at Bates-Gould Chapel. Dale De Raad and Ron Thomke will be the speakers. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery. Memorials may be given to Good Samaritan Health Care Center Eye Machine Fund, P.O. Box 970, Alliance, NE 69301.

Charles L. Petersen, 71

(Dec. 11) RUSHVILLE - Charles LeRoy Petersen, 71, of Rushville died Friday, Dec. 8, at Crest View Care Center in Chadron. He was born Oct. 8, 1929, at Antelope, Neb. His parents were Martin and Beatrice Nettie (Hayne) Petersen.

He was a member of American Legion Henry Davis Post No. 161 at Rushville. He is survived by two daughters, Karen Rondell of Watertown, S.D., and Nina Marie Petersen of New Hyde, N.Y.; and three grandchildren.

He also is survived by his sister, Mary Ann Mueller of Duncan, Ariz. Mr. Petersen's funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 13, at Chamberlain Mortuary in Rushville, with Rev. Millican officiating. Burial will be in Abold Cemetery in Rushville. Chamberlain Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Inez War Bonnett, 67

(Dec. 11) ALLIANCE - Inez M. Little Chief War Bonnett, age 67, died Friday, Dec. 8, 2000, at Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff. She was born Feb. 12, 1933, at Norris, S.D., to John and Viola (Brings A Pipe) Little Chief.

She married John War Bonnett on May 4, 1952. Mrs. War Bonnett lived in Alliance for 30 years where she worked as a nurse's assistant and day-care provider. She had a good long life and loved her family and friends. She lived the life she wanted. Throughout her life, she always enjoyed attending pow-wows and making star quilts.

Her survivors are her husband, John War Bonnett Sr. of Alliance; children, Phyllis War Bonnett of Rapid City, S.D., John War Bonnett Jr., Glen War Bonnett, Larry War Bonnet of Alliance, Fred War Bonnett of Rushville, Ill., Daniel War Bonnett of Alliance, Jim War Bonnett of Tucson, Ariz.; daughter-in-law, Gery War Bonnett of Alliance; sisters, Adeline Black Calf, Ethelene Wounded Shield, Effie Kills In Water; brother Pierre Wounded Shield; 16 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, one son Floyd War Bonnett, one great-grandchild and one brother.

Funeral services will be Thursday, Dec. 14, 2000, at Saint Agnes Hall in Parmelee, S.D. Bill Little Thunder, Brother Don Mink and Rev. William Graham officiating. Burial will be in White Horse Cemetery at Parmelee. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Robert L. Blodgett, 84

(Dec. 11) CHADRON - Robert L. Blodgett, 84, died Wednesday, Dec, 6, at Crest View Care Center in Chadron. He was born Nov. 29, 1916, at Springfield, Neb. His parents were Fred and Bessie (Glaze) Blodgett.

He is survived by his wife, Edna Blodgett of the home in Chadron; son Robert B. Blodgett of Corvaillis, Ore.; daughter Sharon Smith of Ogden, Utah; two stepdaughters, Donna Anderson of Upland, Neb., and Darlene Davis of Chadron; and four grandchildren.

Mr. Blodgett's funeral, with full military services provided by the Veterans Honor Guard, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 9, at Chamberlain Chapel, with Rev. Ken Peterson officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery. Memorials may be made in care of Community First Bank of Chadron. Chamberlain Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
