Rev./Dr. W.R. "Jess" Borg, 73

(Dec. 15) HOUSTON - Rev./Dr. W.R. "Jess" Borg, 73, former Alliance resident, died Tuesday, Dec. 12, at Houston, Texas. During the 1950s, he was a teacher and coach at Alliance High School. He was affiliated with the Episcopal Church. His wife, Jayne Borg of the home in Houston; son Brant Borg of Omaha; and one grandson, survives him. His sister, Marjean Harling of North Carolina; and a cousin, Dale Borg of Alliance, also survive him. Rev./Dr. Borg's memorial service will be Saturday, Dec. 16, at Houston.

Emil A. 'Ted' SCHADWINKEL, 72

(Dec. 15) ALLIANCE - Emil "Ted" Schadwinkel, 72, died Dec. 14, 2001, at Box Butte General Hospital, after an extended illness. He was born Dec. 4, 1929, in Alliance, Neb., the oldest of three children born to Albert and Orletha (Weaver)Schadwinkel. He attended the Alliance Public Schools through his sophomore year, and then attended Kemper Military Academy in Boonville, Miss., where he graduated in 1947. After his high school graduation he attended Kemper Military Academy College, where he majored in Business Administration. While at the Academy, he played football and was on the college wrestling team . He enlisted in the Army in 1950, serving three years in the U.S. States Army, with 14 months of his tour of duty in Japan. He returned to Alliance in 1953.

He married his wife, Lola (Johnson) on Nov. 21, 1954, at the United Methodist Church in Alliance, Nebraska. At that time, he was employed as a baker in Schad's Bakery, a family-owned and operated business. He and his wife moved to Mullen, Neb., in 1955 where he worked in his father-in-law's business, and later owned and operated the Mullen Bakery. While in Mullen, he was in a partnership that operated the Mullen Theater. In 1964, the family moved back to Alliance where Ted worked in Schad's Bakery until it was sold. He then worked in the U.S. Post Office, retiring from there in 1988. He was a member of the United Methodist Church, where he served on various boards throughout the years and was an active member of the Methodist Men's Organization, as well as the Men's Prayer Group. He was a very active member in the Masonic Lodge, having served three years as Worshipful Master--two years in the Alliance Lodge No. 183, and one year in the Mullen Lodge No. 282.

On Dec. 5, 1997, he was coroneted a Knight Commander Court of Honor, in Sioux Falls, S.D., and on Oct. 7, 2001, he was coroneted Inspector General Honorary, which designated him a 33rd Degree Mason. This ceremony was to have been done in Charleston, S.C., but because of his failing health, it was performed in a ceremony at the Box Butte General Hospital in Alliance, Neb.. He was a member of the Tehama Shrine, Hastings, NE, and the Cattle Capital Shrine Club of Alliance where he had served as President. He drove the antique Shrine Fire Truck in all of the parades and celebrations, until his health would no longer permit him to do so. For the past two and one-half years, he had served as the Assistant Secretary of the Scottish Rite at the Masonic Temple. He was a former member of the Panhandle Forum where he served as their President for three years, and also a former member of the Alliance Arts Council, having served on the Board of Directors. He was a life-time member of the Elk's Lodge, and a member of the Eagles Club. He served as president of the Box Butte Credit Union for one year, and had served on the Board of Directors.

Ted was an avid sportsman and was a member of the Sky View Golf Course, the Men's Golf Association, and the Nebraska Seniors Golf Association. He loved to fish and hunt, and always enjoyed all of the school and sporting events, especially the ones that his grandchildren participated in. He was a proud fan of his son's Gering volleyball team. His entire life was well-lived, and he looked forward to each new day. Throughout his extended illness he never complained, and always maintaining a positive attitude. He was a friend to everyone, and will be greatly missed. His six grandchildren are going to miss his smiling face, and his sense of humor, as he was such a big part of their lives.

He is survived by his wife, Lola, his children and their spouses, and his six grandchildren. They are Sally and Steve Engelhaupt and children, Andrea and Tim of Hemingford, Craig and Robin Schadwinkel and children, Shaylah and Kayleigh, of Gering, and Sue and Trent Benzel and children, Erin and Bryan, Alliance. He is also survived by his brother Charles (Chick) and Mary Schadwinkel, Alliance, Neb., and their three sons, Michael, Mitchell, S.D., Andrew, and wife Mandie, and David all of Lincoln, Neb. His nieces and nephews are Dr. Ted and Julie Vorhies of Lincoln ,Kaylynn and Scott Conklin of Kansas City, Mo., and Dale and Sheila Vorhies of Hickman, Neb. Also surviving are his only cousin, Gene Lewis, and wife Mary Ann, Alliance, Neb., and the Lewis children: Tom and Deb Lettington, Alberta, Canada, Mary and Dave Essay, Alliance, Ann and Brad Bishop and Dr. Jon and Polly Lewis, Westminster, Colo., Jim and Leslie Lewis, Grand Island, Neb., Sarah Lewis, Aurora, Colo., and Matt Lewis, Kearney, Neb. He is also survived by his sister-in-laws and brother-in-laws and their children. They are Chester Johnson, Eleanor Weber, and Patricia Wallingford all of Denver, Colo., Bill Johnson of Madisonville Texas, and Don and Eileen Johnson of Omaha, Neb.,. His nieces and nephews are Scott and Nancy Weber, Robert Wallingford, and Stephen and Debra Humphrey, all of Denver, Jayne and J.J. Brooks of Anchorage, Alaska, Nancy and Loren Gilmore, and Marty Johnson, of Madisonville, Texas, and Donna and Tom Dobson of Omaha, Neb. Preceding him in death were his parents, sister, Kathryn Vorhies, and two infant grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at the United Methodist Church in Alliance on Tuesday, Dec. 18, at 2 p.m. with Rev. Mark Schutt officiating. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery. Memorials may be given to The United Methodist Church, The Cattle Capital Shrine Transportation Fund, The Scottish Rite Speech Clinic, Prairie Haven Hospice, or to the donor's choice. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

John L. Nielson, 30

(Dec. 16) ALLIANCE - John L. Nielson, 30, died Friday, Dec. 13, 2002, at Alliance due to injuries received in a motor-vehicle accident. He was born June 17, 1972, at Gordon, Nebraska to Marvin and Kathy (Jensen) Nielson.

He served in the U.S. Army during Desert Storm. He was a member of the American Legion and he enjoyed hunting, fishing and rodeos. On June 6, 1997, he married Amy Lynn Romick at Alliance. He worked in farming and ranching. He is survived by his wife Amy and son Caleb of the home. He also is survived by his parents Marvin and Kathy Nielson of Whitney; sister Karen Williams of Omaha; grandparents John and Opal Nielson of Ashby; nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

Mr. Nielson's funeral will be 2 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 17, at the Alliance Berean Church, with Pastor Dave Wilson officiating. Burial with military rites will be in the Alliance Cemetery. The family prefers memorials in lieu of flowers be sent to Community First National Bank, P.O. Drawer A, Alliance, NE 69301. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Irene Flood, 91

(Dec. 17) ALLIANCE - Irene Flood, 91, died Friday, Dec. 14, 2001, at Good Samaritan Health Care Center. She was born July 2, 1910, at Rosebud, S. D. to James and Elizabeth (Bridgeman) Guerue.

She was married in Rosebud to Dennis Flood. She is survived by her sons, Edward of Allen, S.D., and Wayne of Gering; 18 grandchildren; 54 great-grandchildren; and 22 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, one son, two daughters, five brothers and one sister.

A two-night wake service will begin at 4 p.m., Monday, Dec. 17, at the Indian Mission Church of God. Funeral services will be at the church on 2 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 19, with Reverend Don Mink officiating. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the church. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Lillie L. Sikorski, 94

(Dec. 18) STOCKBRIDGE, Ga. - Lillie L. Sikorski, 94, died Wednesday, Dec. 13, at Stockbridge, Ga. She was born April 24, 1906, at Strasbourg, France. Her parents were Max and Anna (Lattwein) Dierke.

She was married to Ralph J. Sikorski. He preceded her in death. Her son Walter Hilbig of Germany; two daughters, Alice Wade and Lilly Simmons, both of Stockbridge, Ga.; three grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren survive her.

Mrs. Sikorski's graveside service will be at 9 a.m. Monday, Dec. 18, at Crawford Cemetery, with Rev. Tim Pratt officiating. Chamberlain Chapel of Crawford is in charge of arrangements.

Edgar Hankins, 87

(Dec. 18) HAY SPRINGS - Edgar Hankins, 87, died Friday, Dec. 15, at his home in rural Hay Springs.

He is survived by his wife, Amelia "Molly" Hankins of the home at Hay Springs; his daughter Marilyn Redfern of Chadron; two sons, Dennis Hankins and Randy Hankins, both of Hay Springs; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Mr. Hankins funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 20, at Columbkille Catholic Church, with Father Karnish officiating. A rosary will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 19, at the church. Burial will be in Hay Springs Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Hospice Home Health Care of Chadron, in care of Chamberlain-Drabbels Mortuary of Hay Springs, P.O. Box 443, Hay Springs, NE 69347-0443.

John L. Green, 71

(Dec. 18) ALLIANCE - John L. Green died Sunday, December 17 at the Good Samaritan Health Care Center. He was 71 years old. He was born Oct. 27, 1929, at Fort Dodge, Iowa. He came to Nebraska in 1931 with his mother and brothers. He married Verna P. Wills on Nov. 26, 1948, at Alliance. Throughout his life, he worked on ranches, drove truck and started his own trucking business in 1972.

His survivors include his wife, his children and their spouses, Suzan and John Davis, Jody Green, John C. Green, Cindy Olson and Greg Pipitt, James and Connie Green all of Alliance, and Joyce and Jim Madison of Bell Fourche, S.D. Brothers, James P. Green and Gene Lore of Alliance, 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren also survive him. He was preceded in death by his parents Esther and Lyle Lore, two brothers, one sister, and two grandchildren.

Memorial services will be Thursday, Dec. 21, at 2 p.m. at the Bates-Gould Chapel. Reverend Dan Floyd officiating. Memorials may be given to the Sharon Davis Memorial Scholarship in care of Box Butte County 4-H, 415 Black Hills Ave., Alliance, NE, 69301 or a charity of the donor's choice. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Harold R. Ehrhart, 78

(Dec. 18) GERING - Harold R. Ehrhart, 78, died Friday, Dec. 15, at his home in Gering. He was born Marh 2, 1922, at Bayard. His parents were Jacob and Pauline (Greenwald) Ehrhart. He attended school in Bayard, graduating from Bayard High School in 1939. He then attended Business college at Denver.

He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II as a Radarman Second Class aboard the USS Cullman in the Pacific Theater, and was honorably discharged April 22, 1946. He married Viola I. Perrin on April 22, 1951. He owned and operated Ehrhart Bean Co. in Alliance from 1947 until 1978. He loved fishing, boating, gardening and living at Lake Minatare during summers. He was the longest active member of the North Platte Valley Boat Club, and was a lifetime member of of VFW Post No. 1517 of Alliance, BPOE Elks, American Legion Post No. 7 and the First United Methodist Church of Gering.

He is survived by his wife, Viola, of the home in Gering; his daughter Becki Thomlison of Gering; his son Al Ehrhart of Scottsbluff; two grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and five step-grandchildren. He also is survived by his brother Ed Ehrhart of Mesa, Wash.; and his sister Violet Chapin of Denver.

Mr. Ehrhart's funeral will be at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 19, at First United Methodist Church in Gering, with Rev. David Rowe officiating. Burial will be in Alliance Cemetery, with full military rites by VFW Post No. 1517 and American Legion Post No. 7 of Alliance. Visitation will be until 8 p.m. today, Dec. 18, Gering Memorial Chapel. Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church or Prairie Haven Hospice.

Hattie Ross, 99

(Dec. 18) RUSHVILLE - Hattie Ross, 99, died Sunday, Dec. 16, 2001, at Alliance. She had worked as a Nurses' Aide at the nursing home at Rushville. She was a lifetime member of the Rushville American Legion Auxiliary. She is survived by daughters, Irene Brammer of Alliance, Helen Bush of Merriman, Deloris Kutschara of Hay Springs, Frances Gillette of Phoenix, Ariz. and Mary Leva of Las Vegas, Nev.; sons Donald Ross of Hay Springs and Lee Ross of Las Vegas, Nev.; 15 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and 5 great-great-grandchildren. She also is survived by her brother, Ben Kozal of Hay Springs.

Mrs. Ross' funeral will be at 2 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 20, at the Cicmanec-Chambrlain-Pier Chapel at Rushville, with Pastor Scott Gillette officiating. Burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery at Rushville. A memorial has been established for the Alliance Hospice Program or the donor's choice.

Allan M. Thies, 70

(Dec. 19) HAY SPRINGS - Allan M. Thies, 70, a lifetime resident of Hays Springs, died Friday, Dec. 15, at Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff. He was born April 1, 1930, at Dawes County. His parents were Max and Wanda (Briggs) Thies.

He married Imogene Vybiral on Dec. 28, 1953, at Hay Springs. He was a farmer/rancher, and also was employed by Sipp Grain & Feed and Sheridan County Roads Department. He was a member of the St. Columnkille Catholic Church of Hay Springs.

He is survived by his wife, Imogene Thies of the home in Hot Springs; four sons, Jay Thies and Jeffrey Thies of Hot Springs, Anthony Thies of Paxton, Douglas Thies of Palisade, Colo.; daughter Julie Butler of Chadron; and five grandchildren.

Mr. Thies' memorial service will be at 2 p.m. today, Dec. 19, at St. Columnkille Catholic Church, with Father Robert Karnish officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date. Memorials may be made to the Hay Springs Ambulance Fund, in care of Security First Bank, P.O. Box 340, Hay Springs, NW 69347. Cicmanec-Pier Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Amy L. Sieger, 95

(Dec. 19) ALLIANCE - Amy Loretta Sieger, 95 of Oshkosh died Saturday, Dec. 8, 2001, at Highland Park Care Center in Alliance. She was born Nov. 25, 1906, at Alliance. Her parents were Lurton and Amy (Phillips) Jay.

She lived on a ranch southwest of Alliance until the family moved to a ranch northeast of Whitman in Cherry County. During her high school years she stayed in Alliance and worked at the St. Joseph's Hospital to pay room and board. Following graduation, she attended the Hospital School for nurses and graduated June 25, 1928, with her nursing degree. She was married to Leonard Sieger June 25, 1928, at Hyannis. He preceded her in death in 1976. They lived on his family ranch at Buffalo Gap, S.D., until 1977 when she moved with her son Donald to a ranch north of Oshkosh. She moved to Highland Park Care Center Oct. 27, 2001. She is survived by her son, Donald of Oshkosh; and many nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Sieger's funeral was Wednesday, Dec. 12, at the Holechek Funeral Home in Oshkosh with Pastor Cliff Transmeier of the Lisco Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial was be in the Oshkosh Cemetery. A memorial is being established and may be made in care of the family.

Harvey L. Kral, 62

(Dec. 19) ALLIANCE - Harvey L. Kral, 62, died Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2001, at Box Butte General Hospital. He was born July 30, 1941, at Woodrow, Colo. to Joseph and Fern Kral.

He graduated from Woodlin High School in 1959, at Woodrow. He farmed at Woodrow before moving to Alliance in 1983 where he also farmed and did custom farm work. He later worked for the Box Butte County Road Department and as a maintenance man for the Good Samaritan Village. He married Frances (Carter) Main Oct. 26, 1992, at Alliance. He was a member of the Apostolics of Alliance. He is survived by his wife Frances Kral of Alliance; daughter and son-in-law, Deanna and Jim Bessent of Ellsinore, Mo.; son, Rodney Kral, daughter, Danette Kral, and mother, Fern Kral, all of Brush, Colo.; brother and sister-in-law, Marvin and Donna Kral of Greeley, Colo.; sister, Rosalee Simmons of Lakewood, Colo.; sisters and brothers-in-law, Shirley and Les Sebesta of Littleton, Colo., and Frances and Herb Landstrom of Lakewood, Bonnie and Bill Lowe of Aurora, Colo., and Connie and Bill Faryna of Greeley; and five grandchildren. He also is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Joseph and Evelyn Kral of Woodrow. He was preceded in death by his father, brother John, son Roy Main, and one granddaughter.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., Friday, Dec. 21, at the Bates-Gould Chapel with Reverend Duane Wallace officiating. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the donor's choice. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Betty Gentry, 70

(Dec. 19) ALLIANCE - Betty Gentry, 70, of Alliance, died Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2001, at Tucson, Ariz. She was born Jan. 28, 1931 at Hyannis to George and Kathryn (Egan) Bunner.

She was a graduate of Hyannis High School and of Duchesne College at Omaha. She served as Grant county Treasurer for many years until her retirement in 1990. She is survived by her husband John; cousins in the area, Mary C. and Teresa Rock of Alliance, Rodger Egan of Scottsbluff, Tom Egan of Ashby and Teresa Johnson of Hyannis; and nephew Mike Bunner of Bingham. She was preceded in death by her parents, and three brothers, Robert, William and John. Funeral arrangements are pending.
