Merle Kirkman Davis

Merle Kirkman Davis, 87, died April 16, 1997, at the Pilgrim Haven Health Center in Los Altos, Calif.

She was born icon to R.A. and Velma Caster Kirkman on June 6, 1909, in Lenore, Kan.

She was a teacher at Cody Elementary School and later in suburban Denver, where she met her husband, Melvin J. Davis, a Safeway manager. They moved to Honolulu to join their daughter and lived there for many years before returning to the mainland.

Survivors include her husband of Redwood City, Calif.; a daughter, Pam Joske, of Honolulu; a son, Donald of Redwood City; two brothers, Jim Kirkman of North Platte, and Paul Kirkman of Lubbock, Texas; and a niece, Donna Steward (Bert) Linn of rural Bushnel.

She was preceded in death by her parents. In lieu of flowers, the family is suggesting cash donations to the Hawaii Nature Center, 2131 Makiski Height Drive, Honolulu, Hawaii 96822. Graveside services will be in Honolulu.

The Menlo Park Chapel of Spangler Mortuary, Menlo Park, Calif., is in charge of arrangements.

George Alfred Florea

THEDFORD — George Alfred Florea, 69, of Hastings, former Thedford rancher, died April 16, 1997, at the Mary Lanning Hospital in Hastings.

He was born icon July 29, 1927, at Thedford to Claude A. and Mary Elizabeth Adkins Florea. He grew up there and graduated from Thedford High School in 1945. He entered the Navy in 1945 and, after discharge, attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

On March 27, 1952, he and Wilma Hudson were married and made their home on a ranch south of Thedford. After retiring from ranching, they moved into Thedford where he worked for the NRD. They moved to Hastings a few years ago.

He was a member of the American Legion Post 230 of Thedford.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Jackey Roumpf of Hastings; a grandson, Michael Roumpf of Hastings; a great-granddaughter of Hastings; five sisters, Jean Shears of Broken Bow, Rose Miles of O'Neil, Hazel Smith of Thedford and Laura Belle of Lafayette, Colo.; and a sister-in-law, Elsie Florea of Sargent. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother.

Memorials are suggested to the family.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. CT Saturday at the Bethel Assembly of God Church in Thedford with the Rev. C.E. Rohde officiating. Burial will be in the Hillcrest Cemetery in Thedford.

Visitation is from 8-10:30 a.m. Saturday at the church.

Arnold and Mullen Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Gertrude L. Lindstedt

GOTHENBURG — Gertrude L. Lindstedt, 82, of Gothenburg died April 17, 1997, at Gothenburg Memorial Hospital-Long Term.

She was born icon August 15, 1914, north of Gothenburg on Rock Island Table to Alfred T. and Clara A. Carlson Lindstedt. She spent her many years living with her family and in 1969 moved to Slack Nursing Home. She has lived at the Gothenburg Memorial Hospital-Long Term since 1984.

She attended the Seventh Day Adventist Church.

Survivors include three sisters, Ione Lundquist and June Ackerman, both of Marysville, Wash., and June Ackerman of Lexington; a brother, Edwin "Bud" Lindstedt of Gothenburg; and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were her parents; a sister, Lucille Lambertus; and a brother, Conrad.

Memorials are suggested to the Gothenburg Memorial Hospital-Long Term.

Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Blase Memorial Chapel, Gothenburg, with Pastor Larry Viter officiating. Burial will be in the Gothenburg Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Blase Memorial Chapel in Gothenburg, which is in charge of arrangements.

Robert Scott 'Pete' Tinlin

HASTINGS — Robert Scott "Pete" Tinlin, 57, of Hastings, formerly of Gothenburg, died April 15, 1997, at Mary Lanning Hospital-Hastings.

He was born icon Aug. 23, 1939, at Chicago, Ill., to Daniel Scott and Ingrid Townsend Tinlin. He graduated from Burbank High School in San Antonio, Texas, in 1958. He served in the Army in Cambodia for a period of time. He moved to Gothenburg in 1967.

On January 22, 1983, he married Donna Defruiter Engberg in Lexington. They moved to Hastings in 1988.

Survivors include his wife; seven daughters, Betty (Matt Imler), Scarlett, Angel, Bobbi, Danielle, and Samantha, all of Hastings, and Mary Anne of Kearney; and a brother, Dan of Gothenburg.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Bill.

A memorial has been established.

Services will be at 1:30 Friday at the Blase Memorial Chapel in Gothenburg with the Rev. Karen Kaye officiating. Burial will be at Fort McPherson National Cemetery in Maxwell with military honors at graveside by the Gothenburg Firing Squad.

Visitation is from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to noon Friday at Blase Memorial Chapel, which is in charge of arrangements.

Barbara J. Shacklett

ARAPAHOE — Barbara Shacklett, 74, of Arapahoe died April 16, 1997, at the Tri-County Hospital in Lexington.

She was born icon Sept. 24, 1922, at Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, to Glenn and Gladys Ashe Campbell. She graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School and from Iowa Wesleyan College.

On June 13, 1943, she married Robert Shacklett. Following his discharge from the service, the couple made their home in Iowa, Omaha and North Platte before moving to Arapahoe in 1965. She taught school at North Platte and Arapahoe until her retirement in 1987. She had continued her education with post graduate courses at Kearney State College.

She was a member of the Methodist faith, Nebraska Teacher's Association and American Legion Auxiliary.

Survivors include a daughter, Pamela (Harold) Brummer of Maywood; two sons, Mark and James (Zareen), both of Arapahoe; two sisters, Elaine Devine of Tampa, Fla., and Shirley Burns of Maplewood, Mo.; four grandchildren, Shauntelle (Steve) Rinas, Tamara (Garth) Brummer-Cowan and Natasha (Meher) Shacklett; and a great-grandchild, Mackensie Rinas.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1987 and a sister, Virginia Bytheway.

A memorial has been established.

Graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Fort McPherson National Cemetery at Maxwell with the Rev. James Johnson officiating. The body was cremated.

Berryman Funeral Home of Cozad is in charge of arrangements.

Vernon C. Ekstrom
Vernon Clare Ekstrom, 90, of North Platte died Oct. 9, 1997, at Great Plains Regional Medical Center.
He was born icon Dec. 17, 1906, to Walter and Lulu Price Ekstrom at Clyde, Kan. He graduated from Minneapolis (Kan.) High School and then attended two years of college at Concordia, Kan.

On Sept. 1, 1956, he married Frances Larson in Julesburg, Colo.

Mr. Ekstrom owned and operated an implement dealership for many years in North Platte.

Survivors include his wife; a son, James of Englewood, Colo.; a stepson, Donald Larson of Yuma, Ariz.; three sisters, Wilma McGhaey of Colorado, Florence Miller of Parsons, Kan., and Bernetha Beneda of Concordia; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Virginia; his parents; a sister, Esther Ekstrom; and a brother, Virgil.

A memorial has been established.

Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Adams and Swanson Chapel with the Rev. Wayne Paulsen of First Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be in North Platte Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday at Adams and Swanson Funeral Home.

Myrtie B. Henry
COZAD — Myrtie B. Henry, 81, died Oct. 9, 1997, at Hilltop Estates in Gothenburg.
She was born icon March 15, 1916, near Cozad to William and Mae Pearson Scrutchfield. She lived her entire life in the Cozad area.

On Jan. 18, 1933, she married Jesse Henry at Lexington. The coupled farmed north of Cozad until 1959, when they moved to Cozad.

Mrs. Henry was a dispatcher for more than 22 years for the Lexington Police Department.

In her younger years, she enjoyed fishing and camping. She loved gardening, dancing and playing the organ.

In 1949, she received the first private pilot's license issued to a woman in Dawson County.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church since 1950 and a 50-year member of the Order of Eastern Star and Priscilla Rebekah Lodge.

Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Kathryn (Glen) Cherry of Cozad and Marlene Scott of Denver; a son, Harold (Dorthy) of Cozad; 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter.

She was preceded in death by two grandsons, Clifford Lee and Mick Van Cleave; three sisters; and 11 brothers.

Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice.

Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bob Neben officiating. Burial will be in Cozad Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1-9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Berryman Funeral Home.

Dorothy Howard
BROKEN BOW — Dorothy Ann Howard, 66, of Broken Bow died Oct. 8, 1997, at Jennie Melham Hospital in Broken Bow after an extended illness with cancer.
She was born icon Nov. 16, 1930, at Dunning to George Joseph Jr. and Margaret Ann Iverson Fisher. She graduated from Brewster High School in 1948. She attended Chadron and Kearney State Teachers' College and then taught three years until having her family.

On Aug. 17, 1950, she married Victor "V.C." Howard at St. Anselm's Catholic Church in Anselmo. They lived in Blaine County until 1953, when they moved to Sherman County. Mrs. Howard began working for the Ordnance Plant in Grand Island in 1965 and worked there for five and a half years.

In 1967, the couple moved to Litchfield, where they lived until semi-retiring and moving to Broken Bow in 1988. In 1967, the couple established the V.C. Howard Hay Company in Litchfield. She was a working partner in the company for 26 years, retiring in 1993 after becoming ill.

She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Broken Bow, St. Joseph's Altar Society and the Catholic Daughters of America. She enjoyed bowling and playing the slot machines.

Survivors include her husband; three daughters, Vicki (Paul) Peters of Casper, Wyo., Debra (Bill) Schlund of Tooele, Utah, and Emma (Mark) Whitaker of Loudonville, Ohio; two sons, Brad (Michele) and Brent (Ronda), both of Litchfield; four sisters, Odetta (Bill) Huffman of Whitman, Georgia (E.B.) Howard of Merna, Donna (Wayne "Pete") Smith of Maryville, Mo., and Sharon (Merlyn) Rieber of Loup City; a foster brother, Warren (Connie) Bryant of Casper, Wyo.; 12 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two infant sons and her parents.

Rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. today at St. Joseph's Catholic Church. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the church with the Rev. Bob Rooney officiating. Burial will be in the Litchfield Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. today at Govier Brothers Mortuary.

Carol Jeanette Kieselhorst
Carol Jeanette Kieselhorst, 57, of North Platte died Oct. 8, 1997, at the Gothenburg Community Hospital.
She was born icon March 26, 1940, to Jarold and Inez Soloman Sukraw at Maxwell, where she attended school and graduated from high school in 1958. Following graduation, she attended Kearney State College. She taught at several rural Lincoln County schools and Maxwell Public School for 38 years.

On Aug. 30, 1975, she married Kenneth Kieselhorst at Hershey. He preceded her in death on Sept. 28, 1993.

She is survived by two daughters, Marcia (Alan) Hajek of Sidney and Monna (Garth) Hardy of Dillon, Colo.; a son, Jaye (Linda) Kieselhorst of Grand Island; her mother, Inez E. Sukraw of North Platte; two sisters, Sharon (Jack) Wyttenbach of Sauk City, Wis., and Marilyn (Stephen) Morton of North Platte; two brothers, Morris (Jeannette) Sukraw of Gothenburg and Loren (Cathy) Sukraw of Maxwell; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by her father and a brother.

A memorial has been established to the Maxwell Public School Scholarship Fund.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Messiah Lutheran Church with the Rev. Sacia Young officiating. Burial will be in Plainview Cemetery at Maxwell.

Visitation will be from 8;30 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at Adams and Swanson Funeral home, and prior to services Saturday at the church.
