Gerald W. Awtry

McCOOK — Gerald W. Awtry, 74, of McCook died Dec. 6, 1997, at Linden Manor Nursing Home in North Platte.

He was born icon Jan. 15, 1923, to Oliver Edward and Lydia Gifford Awtry at Stockville, where he attended elementary schools in rural Stockville and graduated from high school in 1942.

On Sept. 26, 1943, he married Doris B. Nelsen at Fort Wayne, Ind.

Mr. Awtry served with the Army 72nd Troop Carrier Squadron during World War II. He worked for McCook Equity for 28 years and DayCo for 11 years before retirement.

He was a member of Memorial United Methodist Church and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He enjoyed woodworking, especially making furniture.

Survivors include his wife of McCook; a daughter, Sandy (Dick) Foran of North Platte; two sons, Dennis (Donna) of North Platte and Wayne of Omaha; a brother, Dale (Norma) of Ogallala; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Beulah Wind; and a brother, Wayne.

A memorial has been established.

Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Carpenter Breland Chapel with Dr. Douglas A. Delp officiating. Inurnment will be at 2 p.m. at Fort McPherson National Cemetery at Maxwell.

Carpenter Breland Funeral Home is in charge.

Richard L. “Dick” Church

LEXINGTON — Richard L. “Dick” Church, 37, of Lexington died Dec. 7, 1997, in an accident near Lexington.

He was born icon June 16, 1960, at Osceola to Harold and June Scott Church. He attended school and graduated from Clarks High School in 1978, and attended Grand Island Community College for two years.

On June 16, 1977, he married Marge Ziemba at Yankton, S.D. The couple moved to Lexington from Clarks in 1991.

Mr. Church was an agronomist at Farmland Co-Op.

He attended St. Ann’s Catholic Church. He was president of the Lexington Wrestling Federation and was a 15-year member of the Nebraska Wrestling Federation. He was active with the wrestling program at Lexington as his son, Shawn, was a Lexington wrestler. He also enjoyed hunting and being outside with his son calling in the ducks and geese.

He was a member of the Lexington Booster Club.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, April Church of Lexington, a student at the University of Nebraska at Kearney; a son, Shawn of Lexington; two sisters, Tammy Church of Clarks and Melody Church of Osceola; a brother, Jeff (Lori) Church of Stromsberg; his mother-in-law, Theresa Ziemba of Fullerton; nieces and nephews and many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents and his father-in-law.

Memorials are suggested to his children.

A Wake Service will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, with Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Thursday at the church with the Rev. Don Buhrman officiating. Burial will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at Pierce Chapel Cemetery at Clarks.

Reynolds-Love Funeral Home is in charge.

Firmin Q. Feltz

OGALLALA — Firmin Q. Feltz, 86, of Ogallala, a longtime area attorney, died Dec. 7, 1997, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.

He was born icon May 22, 1911, in Keystone to Firmin Q. and Alice M. Walker Feltz.

Survivors include his wife, Evelyn of Ogallala; a daughter, Kerry (John) Himler of Louisville, Ky.; a son, John “Chip” (Penney) of Ogallala; six grandchildren, Jonathan, Joshua and Jullian Himler and Chrissa, Bo and Jess Feltz; a sister, Georgia Lawler of Paxton; and a brother, Gene (Ruby) of Ogallala.

He was preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers.

A memorial has been established.

Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. today at St. Luke’s Catholic Church, with Mass of Christian Burial at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the church with the Rev. Art Faesser as celebrant. Burial will be in the Ogallala Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today at Gubser Funeral Home, which is in charge, and from 6 p.m. to time of Rosary at the church.

Merle V. Henry

HASTINGS — Merle V. Henry, 87, father of Robert M. Henry of North Platte, died Dec. 6, 1997, at Park Place Nursing Center in Grand Island.

He was born icon Aug. 21, 1910, at Wormer, Kan., to Perry and Lucy Ward Henry.

On June 15, 1932, he married Helen Boltz. She preceded him in death on July 6, 1988.

Mr. Henry was a mechanic for the State of Nebraska Highway Department and had lived in Hastings since 1946.

Survivors include a daughter, Evelyn (Elmer) Layher of Grand Island; two sons, Robert M. (Carolyn) of North Platte and Kenneth E. (Marcia) of Cheyenne, Wyo.; 13 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Alice Peter; his parents and two sisters.

A memorial has been established.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Brand-Wilson Chapel in Hastings, with the Rev. Bill Liddell officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery at Hastings at a later date.

Visitation will be 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and 8 a.m. to service time Wednesday at Brand-Wilson Chapel, which is in charge.

Alice C. McEvoy

Alice C. McEvoy, 76, formerly of North Platte, died Dec. 6, 1997, at Denver.

She was born icon March 7, 1921, to Marion J. and Ruth Ella Codner Amis at North Platte, where she was raised and graduated from North Platte High School in 1939. She attended Nebraska Wesleyan University for two years.

In 1941, she married Robert Faulkner. He preceded her in death.

On Sept. 10, 1945, she married William R. McEvoy in Goodland, Kan. He preceded her in death. In 1949, she moved to Colorado.

Mrs. McEvoy was the former proprietor of Lemon’s Cafe in the early 1940s.

She was a member of Calvary Presbyterian Church, Business and Professional Women, Does and Epsilon Sigma Alpha Sorority, all in Denver.

Survivors include two daughters, Carolyn McEvoy and Colleen Dingmann, both of Aurora, Colo., and a grandson, Daniel Dingmann of Greeley, Colo.

She was also preceded in death by a son, Robert D. Faulkner Jr. and her parents.

Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at North Platte Cemetery with the Rev. Virgil Taylor of the Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial will be in the North Platte Cemetery.

Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. Wednesday and from 8:30 a.m. to noon Thursday at Carpenter Memorial Chapel, which is in charge.

Hayes McGraw

BROKEN BOW — Hayes McGraw, 77, died Dec. 7, 1997, at the Sargent Nursing Home.

He was born icon Aug. 25, 1920, to Charles and Emily Bader McGraw on a farm near Gates, where he attended school and graduated at the age of 16.

The fall following graduation, he began teaching in a rural school. He received his bachelor’s degree from Kearney State College in 1954 and his master’s degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1957. He taught in rural and town schools in Nebraska, and he also taught at Wayne State College, Kearney State College and Westmar College in LeMars, Iowa.

Mr. McGraw was the Custer County superintendent for 16 years. He was a Professional Penman and held a professional and teacher’s certificate in manuscript and cursive writing. He enjoyed many sports, raising flowers and he also performed as a clown at many county fairs and celebrations.

Survivors include a sister, Carol Swartz of Grand Island and a brother, Myron of Gates; four nieces; and a nephew.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, James T. and Max.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow, with burial in the Broken Bow Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at Govier Brothers Mortuary.

Earl McGregor

GRAINTON — Earl McGregor, 91, a lifetime resident of Hayes County, died Dec. 5, 1997, at the Chase County Community Hospital in Imperial.

Funeral services were Monday at the Grainton United Methodist Church with Pastor Delano Cunningham officiating. Burial was in the Wallace Cemetery.

Bullock-Long Funeral Home of Grant was in charge.

F.W. McKnight

ATHENS, Ga. — F.W. McKnight, a former pastor of First Baptist Church in Maxwell, died Dec. 7, 1997. He was 79.

He was born icon to Clark Conley and Margaret Davis McKnight at Cathage, Mo. He was a 1948 graduate of Rockmart Bible College in Denver and was awarded a Doctor of Divinity Degree from Pillsbury Baptist College in Owatonna, Minn., in 1959.

Dr. McKnight was the first dean for Bible Baptist College in Denver and served on many college and association boards throughout the years. He was serving as interim pastor of Temple Baptist Church in Athens at the time of his death. He conducted jail ministries in each town where he pastored.

Survivors include three daughters, Rachel Chandler of Athens, Connie McCloud of Chattanooga, Tenn., and Carolyn McKnight of Portland, Ore.; a sister, Mary Swihart of Lowrey City, Mo.; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a niece.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Elnora Stover McKnight, on Dec. 2, 1997, and a daughter, Elnora Ann Jones.

Memorials are suggested to the Temple Baptist Church missionary fund.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Temple Baptist Church with the Revs. Lee Ayers and Bill Ricketts officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Baptist Church Cemetery.

Lord and Stephens Funeral Home, East, is in charge.

Dorothy L. Real

OGALLALA — Dorothy L. Real, 74, of Ogallala died Dec. 6, 1997, at the Ogallala Community Hospital.

Survivors include her husband, James of Ogallala; a son, Mike of Davenport, Iowa; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Elnor Day of Crystal Springs, Miss., and Lois (George) Tiller of McCook.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Johnston.

Memorials have been established to the Osteoporosis Foundation and St. Luke’s Catholic Church.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. MT Wednesday at Draucker Funeral Home with the Rev. John Schlaf officiating. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. CT in Fort McPherson National Cemetery in Maxwell.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. today at Draucker Funeral Home, which is in charge.
