Mary Florence Shiltz

Mary Florence Shiltz, 86, of North Platte, died Jan. 15, 1999, at the North Platte Care Centre. She was born icon on Dec. 23, 1912, at Loomis, to Crete O. and Anna M. Peterson Cobb. She graduated from Grant High School with the class of 1930. She came to North Platte in 1942 and had resided here since. For a number of years, she was employed at Tucker’s Restaurant as a salad maker. She married George Shiltz on Nov. 24, 1967. She was a member of the Methodist Church. She was heavily involved with Brownies and Girl Scouts in North Platte since 1942.

Survivors include three sons, Dale (Marlene) Peregrine of Hershey, Richard A. Peregrine of Florida and Robert G. (Patty) Rich of Denver, Colo.; a brother, Andrew Cobb of California and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three husbands and two daughters, Mary Jane and Anna Mae.

Her remains were cremated. Memorial services will be held at a later date. Adams & Swanson Funeral Home is in charge.

Lee W. Waterfield

Lee W. Waterfield, 83, of North Platte, died Jan. 15, 1999, at home. She was born icon on March 23, 1915, in North Platte, to Marvin and Estelle Badelle West.

She married Elliott Waterfield who preceded in death. She lived in West Palm Beach, Fla., before returning to North Platte 12 years ago.

Mrs. Waterfield was a member of the Eagles Auxiliary and received her 10-year pin in 1998.

Survivors include four nieces, three nephews and a sister-in-law, Grace West.

She was preceded in death by her husband, a sister, two brothers and a nephew.

There will be no services.

Carpenter Memorial Chapel is in charge.

Leona E. Nichols

MAYWOOD — Leona E. Nichols, 80, of Fontana, Calif., formerly of Curtis, died Dec. 21, 1998, of heart failure at Community Hospital in San Bernardino, Calif.

She was born icon March 24, 1918, at Curtis to William L. and Lulu Wills Linnemeyer. She lived in Fontana for the last 42 years. She worked as a cook for Cameo Lodge Guest Home. She was a home health care provider for 15 years and retired about 10 years ago.

Survivors include two daughters, Patricia Mills of Fontana and Wilda McFatrich of Prairie Grove, Ark.; two sons, William A. of San Bernardino and Jack D. of Scottsbluff; two sisters, Veda Saeger of Portland, Ore., and Doris Phillips of Cambridge; two brothers, Richard Linnemeyer of McCook and Lewie Linnemeyer of Dannebrough; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 27, 1999, at the First Christian Church in Maywood with interment at a later date.

Wetzel Funeral Home of Curtis is in charge.

Marvin J. Richards

LINDSTROM, Minn. — Marvin J. Richards, 71, of Lindstrom, former North Platte resident, died Jan. 12, 1999, at his home.

He was born icon on Aug. 21, 1927, in North Platte. He moved to St. Paul, Minn., in 1950, and later to Shoreview, Minn., before retiring to Lindstrom and Mesa, Ariz.

Mr. Richards was a World War II veteran. He worked for the Northern Pacific Railroad Communications Department, Hamms Brewery as a Senior Maintenance Supervisor and Johnston Coca Cola Bottling Group, retiring as Vice President of Operations.

Survivors include his wife Ardyce; three daughters, Carol (Mark) Earle, Deanna (Paul) Lorinser and Sarah (Don) Eagan; a son, Joseph (Roxanne); two sisters, Elaine (Rose) Hudson and Gwen (Jim) James; a brother, Scott (Milly); 10 grandchildren, Holly, (Matt) Schultze, Monica Earle, Timothy, Teresa Lorinser, Jessica, Eric, Mark Eagan, Joshua, Brittany, Mallory Richards; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Ardis.

A Memorial has been established.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Chisago Lakes Evangelical Church in Lindstrom with a private family interment to follow.

Grandstand Funeral Home of Lindstrom is in charge.

Harold Neil “Tuff” Bruce

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Harold Neil “Tuff” Bruce, former resident of Hershey, died Feb. 13, 1999, in Bermuda Dunes, Calif. He was 84.

He was born icon Aug. 25, 1914, in Hershey.

Mr. Bruce was a veteran of World War II, where he wrote the initial first aid booklet used in the field.

On June 25, 1933, he married Faye Bedker in North Platte. The couple moved to Connecticut in 1935. They lived in the Bay Area from 1935 to 1952, where he worked for the Coca-Cola Bottling Company. In 1954, they moved to San Luis Obispo, Calif. where he was active in many organizations, including the Elks Lodge, Al Malaikah Shrine, King Davids Lodge and Scottish Rite Masons. He also had a perfect attendance while a Rotarian.

He and his wife opened the Pepsi-Cola Bottling Company in 1954, which he operated until its sale in 1970. In addition, in 1964 he and a group of local businessmen and professionals were granted a federal charter, originating the First National Bank of San Luis Obispo. As CEO and manager, he negotiated the buyout of the bank by Wells Fargo in 1979 and then retired at the age of 65.

He had desert property from 1976 to the time of his death and for several years he raised thoroughbred horses in that area.

He was a man worthy of respect and will be missed by all who knew him.

Survivors include a daughter, Judy B. Haas of Payson, Ariz.; a son, Truman of Hemet, Calif.; six grandchildren, David of Corvallis, Ore., Stephen of Los Angeles; Mark of Summit, N.J., Bruce Pierce of Bonney Lake, Wash., Ron Pierce of Phoenix and Don Pierce of Moscow, Idaho; and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years; a sister and two brothers.

Memorials are suggested to King David Lodge No. 209 F&AM, 859 Marsh Street, San Luis Obispo, Calif. 93401.

He will be interred with his wife in Riverside National Cemetery in Riverside, Calif.

Palm Springs Mortuary of Cathedral, Calif. is in charge.

Leo Richard Hill

OGALLALA — Leo Richard Hill, 61, of Ogallala, died Feb. 15, 1999, at the Poudre Valley Hospital in Fort Collins, Colo.

Survivors include two sons, Donald (Carol) of Sedgwick, Colo. and Lawrence Ray (Peggy) of Boelus; a step son, Rick of Ovid, Colo.; two sisters, Violet (Paul) Gomez of Savannah, Ga. and Caroline Fox of Grand Island; two brothers, Larry (Christina) and Frank, both of Ovid, Colo.; three grandchildren and two step grandchildren.

A memorial has been established.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. MT Saturday at the Draucker Funeral Chapel. Interment will be in the Ogallala Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1 to 6 p.m. today at the Draucker Funeral Home in Ogallala.

Mary L. Huffman

Mary L. Huffman, 78, of North Platte, died Feb. 16, 1999, at Centennial Park Retirement Village.

She was born icon Nov. 22, 1920, in Stapleton to John and Margaret T. Beckius Becker. She graduated from high school in Stapleton in 1938 and taught school one year at Pinkerton School northwest of Tryon.

On Sept. 4, 1939, she married Elmer Huffman. The couple operated the Huffman Produce and Feed Store in Stapleton until 1947. They continued to make their home in Stapleton until they moved to North Platte in 1954. They owned and operated the House of Spirits Liquor Store for nine years. She was bookkeeper for several different businesses. Her husband preceded her in death on Jan. 18, 1984.

Mrs. Huffman was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and the Eagles Auxiliary.

Survivors include nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; six sisters, Cecilia Oman, Thersia Pooschke, Catherine Fifield, Regina Walz and Margaret Kramer; an infant sister and two infant brothers.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to North Platte Catholic Schools Endowment Fund or the donor’s choice.

A prayer vigil will be at 7 p.m. Friday at Carpenter Memorial Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Richard Piontkowski as celebrant. Burial will be in Floral Lawns Memorial Gardens.

Carpenter Memorial Chapel is in charge.

Orville L. Kern

Orville L. Kern, 78, of North Platte, died Feb. 18, 1999, at Centennial Park Nursing Home.

He was born icon on Nov. 14, 1920, at Boone, Iowa to Lloyd and Florence Lamb Kern. He served in the Army Air Force during World War II and was honorably discharged in 1946. He came to North Platte in 1948 and remained until his death.

On May 6, 1949, he married Phyllis Gamble at the First Presbyterian Church in North Platte. He began working for Union Pacific railroad in 1948 and retired in 1980 as a crew dispatcher.

Mr. Kern was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and P.R. Halligan Post No. 163 of the American Legion. He was also a member of the Brotherhood of Railway Clerks. He loved to camp and fish.

Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Karen Pierson of Denver, Kathleen (Wes) Newtson of Benkelman and Keta (Matthew) Smith of North Platte; three sisters, Hazel West of Payson, Ariz., Lois (Albert) Teeters of Jamestown, Ohio, and Shirley (Henry) Geller of Langston, Pa.; two brothers, Harold (Alberta) of Omaha and Gaylord Dean (Betty) of Albuquerque, N.M.; nine grandchildren, Michael Pierson, Krystal Traver, Keta Newtson, Miranda Newtson, Katie Jo Newtson, Scott White, Sara Dolan, Lindsey Smith and J.C. Smith; and two great-grandchildren, Brandon and Jarib Johnson.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Charles; and a twin brother, Otto.

A memorial has been established to the Veteran’s Memorial.

His body was cremated.

Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Adams & Swanson Chapel with the Rev. Eric Meissner of the Messiah Lutheran Church officiating. Inurnment of the cremains will take place at a later date.

Mildred Knapp

BROKEN BOW — Mildred Knapp, 88, formerly of Broken Bow, died Feb. 14, 1999, at the Chula Vista Care Center in Chandler, Ariz.

She was born icon Aug. 23, 1910, on a farm southeast of Broken Bow to James Madison and Elizabeth Martha Rogers. She married Ralph Clinton Knapp on Aug. 29, 1936 in Loup City.

Mrs. Knapp started her nursing career in Broken Bow at the General Hospital. She was a supervisor at the Broken Bow Community Hospital. She retired in 1978 and moved to Chandler, Ariz in 1993.

Survivors include a daughter, Jackie (Emery) Peace of Chandler; a son, Jim (Judy) of St. Louis, Mo.; a sister, Goldie Taylor of Landers, Calif.; three grandchildren, Michael Peace of Chandler, Bradley Peace of Gladwater, Texas, and Tammy Jo Knapp Carr of Roanoke, Va.; two great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; five sisters and four brothers.

Her body was cremated.

A memorial service will be held in Broken Bow at a later date.
