Judith D. Johansen

COZAD — Judy Johansen, 65, of Cozad died April 17, 1999, at North Platte.

She was born icon Nov. 6, 1933, near Cozad to Walter and Leona Haug Laier. She attended rural Dist. 72 school and graduated in 1950 from Cozad High School. She attended Wesleyan University and later Lincoln General Nursing School, receiving her registered nurse’s degree. She worked and taught nursing in Omaha.

On Dec. 20, 1954, she married Keith Hadley Johansen. They moved to Dallas in 1958, where she worked as a nurse for several years. She returned to college, receiving a master’s degree in anthropology, which she taught at Southern Methodist University.

Mrs. Johansen lived in New York for a short time prior to returning to Cozad in the early 1980s. She was a member of First United Methodist Church.

Surviving her is a daughter, Cynthia (Les Chew) Johansen of Los Angeles; a son, Mark (Laurie) of Dallas; her mother of Cozad; a sister, Barbara Laier of Redondo Beach, Calif.; and a grandson, Keith Bradford Johansen.

Her father died the following day, April 18, 1999, at Cozad.

A memorial has been established.

Services for her and her father will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bob Neben officiating. Burial will be in the Cozad Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at Berryman Funeral Home.

Walter L. Laier

COZAD — Walter Laier, 91, died April 18, 1999, at Cozad.

He was born icon Jan. 6, 1908, to Gottlieb and Caroline Daiss Laier in Gosper County near Eustis. He attended rural Gosper County and Eustis High School.

On June 9, 1930, he married Leona Haug at the Haug family farmsite southwest of Cozad. They made their home on a farmsite southwest of Cozad, moving to Cozad in 1956.

During his entire lifetime, he was engaged in farming and cattle feeding.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church and a charter member of the Cozad Elks Lodge. He and his wife enjoyed spending the winter for several years at their condo at Sun City West, Ariz.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Barbara D. Laier of Redondo Beach, Calif.; two grandchildren, Mark (Laurie) Johansen of Dallas and Cynthia (Les Chew) Johansen of Los Angeles; and a great-grandson, Keith Bradford Johansen.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Judy Johansen, on Saturday, April 17, 1999; three sisters, Bertha Taege, Clara Messenger and Mary Castor; and four brothers, William, John, Chris and Paul.

A memorial has been established.

Services for Mr. Laier and his daughter, Judy, will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bob Neben officiating. Burial will be in the Cozad Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at Berryman Funeral Home.

Lela Munnell

SARGENT — Lela Munnell, 96, of Sargent, formerly of Brewster, died April 16, 1999, at the Goli Medical Center in Sargent.

She was born icon Sept. 21, 1902, near Callaway to John H. and Alice Colby Solt. She grew up and attended school in the Callaway area.

On June 30, 1928, she married Charles B. Munnell at North Platte. In March 1939, the couple moved to a ranch southeast of Brewster, where they made their home.

In 1964, she moved to Sargent. She spent many years taking care of elderly people in their homes. In May 1998, she entered the Goli Medical Center.

Survivors include 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband in July 1963; an infant daughter; two sons, Carl and Franklin; her parents; two sisters; and three brothers.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Pleasant Valley Gospel Church near Brewster with the Rev. Don Schauda officiating. Burial will be in the Brewster Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow.

Ralph Reynolds

GRANT — Ralph Reynolds, 69, of Grant died April 17, 1999, at Great Plains Regional Medical Center in North Platte.

He was born icon Aug. 7, 1929, at Imperial to John and Buelah Nedrow Reynolds. He grew up southwest of Imperial and graduated from Chase County Hospital in 1948.

On March 23, 1950, he married Maxine Bernard. They lived on different farms and ranches in Chase and Dundy counties until 1962, when they moved to Enders where he worked for the Enders Co-Op. In 1969, they moved to Grant, where he operated the farm fuel truck for the Venango Co-Op until his retirement in 1992.

Surviving him is his wife; a daughter, Shirley (Bob) Rhiley of Ogallala; three sons, Eldon of Hays, Kan., Jerry of North Platte and Duane of Grant; six grandchildren; a great-grandson; and a sister, Wava Brown of Benton, Ark.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Naomi Brown and Neva Twitty; and a brother, Albert Reynolds.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. today at the Grant Evangelical Free Church with Pastor Dennis Goodin officiating. Burial will be in the Grant Cemetery.

Bullock-Long Funeral Home is in charge.

Eddie Tepley

IMPERIAL — Eddie Teply of Imperial died April 17, 1999, at the Chase County Community Hospital in Imperial. He was 81.

He was born icon Jan. 26, 1918, in northeast Chase County to John and Martha Neverve Teply.

On Feb. 21, 1941, he was inducted into the U.S. Army and served in the Euopean Theatre during World War II. He was awarded the Purple Heart and Oak Leaf Cluster and the Silver Star for bravery. He was honorably discharged in 1945.

On Sept. 11, 1947, he married Patricia Mae Creasman.

Mr. Teply was a member of St. John’s and St. Patrick’s Catholic Churches. He was also a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans. He enjoyed fishing and hunting and he loved gardening.

Surviving him is his wife; a daughter, Cindy (Steve) Balsom of Imperial; two sons, David (Penny) of Imperial and Sam (Kristie) of Lexington; a sister, Charlotte Johnson of Imperial; a brother, John (Opal) of Champion; eight grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Berniece Teply of Imperial.

He was preceded in death by a son, Danny Joe; his parents; a sister, Josie Keller; and three brothers, Henry Frank, Charlie and Raymond.

A memorial has been established.

Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. MT today at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Imperial with the Rev. Greg Pawloski officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery at Wuaneta.

Liewer Funeral Home of Imperial is in charge.

Glen Robert Viehmeyer

BURLINGTON, Colo. — Glen Robert Viehmeyer of Burlington, Colo., a native of Arnold, died April 15, 1999, at the Kit Carson County Memorial l Hospital where he was under hospice care. He was He was 68.

He was born icon Dec. 29, 1930, in Arnold to Glenn and Catherine Viehmeyer. He graduated in 1959 from North Platte High School. He received his bachelor’s degree in agronomy from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. It was there on a blind date that he met his sweetheart and wife of 46 years, Carly Rogers. They married on Aug. 23, 1952, in Sheridan, Wyo., after which they finished their senior year of college.

After serving two years in the U.S. Army, and living in several towns in Nebraska, Kansas and Colorado, they settled in Burlington in 1966.

In search of his true calling, Rotary International, he was involved in sales of a variety of products, including center pivot irrigation systems, manufactured housing, carpentry and radio advertising for KNAB in Burlington.

His joys in life included his children, grandchildren, sailing, reading, traveling and intelligent conversation. His biting wit and humorous outlook on life will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Mr. Viehmeyer joined the Burlington Rotary Club in 1968, serving as its president in 1973-74. He worked with youth from all over the world while in the Rotary Youth Exchange Program for 10 years, serving as district chairman his last three years. This is where he was affectionately nicknamed “Pappabear.”

In July 1998, he began his term as district governor of Rotary District 5470, a position he held at the time of his death. He and his wife made many wonderful friends while visiting the 51 Rotary Clubs in the district and attending functions with his 26 other governor classmates from all the Midwestern states.

He was active in the Burlington United Methodist Church, serving on numerous committees and leading an adult Sunday school class for more than 30 years. He was also a member of the Carousel Toastmasters and the Rotary RV Fellowship.

Surviving him is his wife; two daughters, Kelly (Lynn) Spain of Dayton, Texas, and Susan (Paul) Doak of Arvada, Colo.; a son, Curt (Debbie Alman) of Fort Collins, Colo.; seven grandchildren, Jon Spain, Meryl, Andrew and Laine Saks, Michael Viehmeyer and Laura and Nathan Doak; a niece, Kate (John Chandler) Fine of Portland, Ore.; a nephew, Bill (Talle) Fine of Lake Jackson, Texas; a great-niece, Stephanie (Brand) Powell and a great-great-nephew, Bradley Powell, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; a brother-in-law, Steve (Nancy) Rogers of Sheridan, Wyo.; an aunt, Helen Wells of North Platte; and an uncle, Phillip Smith of Vancouver, Wash.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Joyce Fine; and a granddaughter, Janna Viehmeyer.

Memorials may be sent to the Bank of Burlington for the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International, Caring Hands Hospice or for Disaster Relief through the Burlington United Methodist Church.

Burial was April 19, 1999, in McCain Cemetery near the Stapleton family homestead.

Hendricks-Love Mortuary of Burlington was in charge.

Velda Katherine Young

IMPERIAL — Velda Katherine Young, 84, died April 17, 1999, at Great Plains Regional Medical Center in North Platte.

She was born icon Sept. 16, 1914, at Hayes Center to Daniel Blair and Sophia Elizabeth Fornoff May.

On Sept. 7, 1935, she married Robert P. Young in McCook. They moved to Imperial in 1950.

Mrs. Young was first of all a devoted wife and mother. In 1961, she began working at the Imperial Medical Clinic and retired in 1986 after 25 years. She loved people and always remembered names and faces.

She was a member of the Hayes Center Congregational Church. She was a faithful supporter of the Imperial United Methodist Church, and taught Sunday school.

Surviving her is her husband; a daughter, Dianne (David) McClatchey of Eustis; a son-in-law, Richard Rassfeld of Omaha; five grandchildren; a sister, Freda Leffler-Iles of Mesa, Ariz.; a sister-in-law, Lois May of Hayes Center; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Cheryl; a son, Dirk; her parents; three sisters; and two brothers.

Memorials may be given to the Imperial Senior Center or the United Methodist Church in Imperial.

Graveside services will be at 9 a.m. MT Wednesday in Palisade Cemetery. Memorial services will follow at 11:30 a.m. MT at the United Methodist Church of Imperial with Pastor Murray Schmechel officiating.

Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. today at Liewer Funeral Home in Imperial.

Helen L. Johnson

COMMERCE CITY, Colo. — Helen L. Johnson, 78, of Commerce City, Colo., died April 15, 1999, at her home.

She was born icon Sept. 27, 1920, to Hans and Mary Morrison Johnson at Arnold, Nebraska, where she attended school.

On Feb. 26, 1941, she married David A. Johnson in Gandy. The couple moved to Dunning, where she became a homemaker, until they moved to Portland, Ore. Upon returning to the Arnold area, during the time that her husband was in the service, she helped make many doughnuts and birthday cakes that were given to the soldiers during World War II at the North Platte Canteen. Later on, she owned and operated the Sportsman Cafe and the Goldenrod Cafe at Sidney.

Survivors include two daughters, Mary Jane (Harold) Owens of North Platte and Susan Elaine (Melvin) Suedekum of Tempe, Ariz.; two sons, Thomas D. of Ft. Morgan, Colo., and Rodney H. (Debbie) of Commerce City; a sister, Ann Christensen of Kearney, and a brother, Hans L. Johnson of Juniata; seven grandchildren, Tonya (Max) Long of Glade, Kan., Sherri and Michael Suedekum of Tempe, Ariz., Randy Johnson of Arvada, Colo., Tim, Josh and Karen Johnson of Commerce City; four great-grandchildren, Skye and Brenna Long of Glade and Lyric and Christopher of Denver.

She was preceded in death by her husband on Jan. 1, 1999; her parents, two sisters, Mabel Andre and Christy Olson; a brother, John H. Johnson, and a granddaughter, Bonny Jane Owens.

Memorials may be made to the donor’s choice.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Carpenter Memorial Chapel with Pastor Mark Hamel of the Phillipsburg, Kan., Wesleyan Church officiating. Burial will be in Floral Lawns Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be from 1-9 p.m. Sunday and from 9 a.m. to service time Monday at Carpenter Memorial Chapel.
