Hazel G. Nelson

SARGENT — Hazel G. Nelson, 89, of Sargent died Sept. 24, 2000, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.

She was born icon Aug. 20, 1911, near Mason City to James P. and Mary Hess Drake. They moved to Loup County when she was young. She attended country school through the eighth grade.

On June 9, 1935, she married Ralph Nelson. They lived in Grand Island, Broken Bow and Almeria. She was a mail carrier in the Sandhills for 12 years. They retired in Sargent in 1981. Her hobbies were playing the organ, fishing and traveling to Arizona and Oregon to visit family and friends.

Mrs. Nelson is survived by her husband; two sisters, Norma (Hank) Cornelison of Sargent and Barbara (Keith) Blauvelt of Thedford; and cousins, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Pearl, Vesta and Lola; and three brothers, Archie, Roland and Lyle Allen.

Memorials are suggested to the Sargent Health Center Activities Department.

Services were Sept. 28, 2000, in Sargent with the Rev. Bill Smith officiating. Burial was in Fort McPherson National Cemetery.

Rhoad Funeral Home of Sargent was in charge.

Sheryl A. Nicholas

LaHARPE, Kan. — Sheryl A. Nicholas, 83, former manager of Pawnee Springs Ranch at Maxwell and three other Nebraska ranches then owned by Peter Kiewit, died Oct. 1, 2000 at LaHarpe, Kan.

He was born icon there Sept. 25, 1917 and grew up on a dairy farm. He was the first Eagle Scout in the LaHarpe Scout Troop, was president of his high school class and graduated number one in the class in 1935.

He attended Iola Junior College and Kansas State College, graduating with a bachelor of science degree in agronomy in 1939. He was training to be a county extension agent when he landed a job with the Soil Conservation Service and was assigned to St. Paul. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on Dec. 9, 1940, and served four years, two of them at Cold Bay, Alaska. He rejoined the Soil Conservation Service after his separation from military service in 1945.

He moved to North Platte in 1947 to establish a new office for the Soil Conservation Service. He was supervisor for the SCS district here until 1954 when he was hired by Kiewit to manage four large ranches with headquarters at Pawnee Springs. The operation included more than 84,000 acres in Lincoln, Logan, McPherson and Thomas counties.

He introduced irrigation for the alfalfa fields on the river valley and built a $500,000 pellet plant used for producing feed pellets for cattle on the ranches.

He married to Louise Vineyard at LaHarpe. They were divorced in 1970.

In 1972, he married Ruby Laurenzana at Kansas City, Mo.,

He retired in 1985 and moved with his wife to their home town of LaHarpe. He was a 32nd Degree Mason, belonging to the Moran/LaHarpe lodge, a member of the LaHarpe Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Iola American Legion.

Mr. Nicholas is survived by his wife; a daughter, Susan A. Johnson of Jacksboro, Texas; a son, Arthur E. Nicholas of Del Mar, Calif.; a sister, Phyllis Loveland of LaHarpe; a brother, Philip of Lake San Marcos, Calif.; 13 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Sidney; his parents; and a sister, Joyce Lust.

Memorials are suggested to the Allen County Hospice in Iola, Kan.

The body was cremated and memorial services will be at a later date.

Andrew 'Andy' Eaton

Andrew "Andy" Wayne Eaton, 82, of North Platte died Oct. 1, 2000, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.

He was born icon June 6, 1918, to Harry and Ruth DuGuay Eaton at Oconto. He was the first baby born icon in Custer County during World War II. He lived on the farm until he moved to Gothenburg to live with an aunt so he could attend high school. He graduated in 1935. He participated in track, football, basketball and baseball. He attended diesel mechanic school in California and then served in the U. S. Army 134th Infantry from December 1940 to December 1945. He attained the rank of captain. He also served 23 years in the Nebraska National Guard and retired as a captain in 1969.

On June 15, 1941, he married Olive L. French in Little Rock, Ark. He was a mechanic at the Ford-Lincoln-Mercury Garage for many years and he retired in 1975. He then served as Lincoln County Veterans Service Officer, retiring in 1986. He was commander of the Honor Guard firing squad for military funerals.

Mr. Eaton was a member of the First United Methodist Church. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1504, 40 et 8, and Post 163 of the American Legion, where he served as post and district commander. He was also a member of SAL, the Eagles and Disabled American Veterans. He was an admiral in the Great Navy of the State of Nebraska. He had been a resident of the Nebraska Veterans Home in Grand Island since May 1999. He was an avid sports fan, especially of the Nebraska Cornhuskers.

Survivors include his wife; four daughters, Ellen Ruth Warath of North Platte, Andrea (Ken) Schau of Sioux Rapids, Iowa, Bonita (Randy) Enochs of New York and Peggy (John) Tanner of Columbus; a son, Gary of North Platte; two sisters, Marge (Bob) Jones of North Platte and Ruth (Don) Haase of Lincoln; a brother, Calvin (Barb) Eaton of Cozad; 13 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; 6 step-grandchildren; eight step-great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother; a son-in-law; a grandson and two great-grandsons.

Memorials are suggested to the 40 et 8 Nurses Scholarship Fund or the 20th Century Veterans Memorial Fund.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Adams and Swanson Chapel in North Platte with the Rev. Perry Edwards officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Fort McPherson National Cemetery at Maxwell.

Visitation will be today from 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Dora G. Johnston

CALLAWAY — Dora G. Johnston, 85, of Callaway died Sept. 30, 2000, at the Callaway District Hospital.

She was born icon Oct. 7, 1914, at Berlin, Germany, to Paul Richard and Emma Kruger Malkenthin. She had a sister and two brothers. After she graduated from school, she was a fashion model for a time.

On. Sept. 4, 1948, she married August "Augie" Johnston. Her husband had been serving in the U.S. Armed Services in Berlin. They moved to the Johnston family farm west of Callaway Oct. 29, 1948. They were involved in farming and ranching for 32 years. She enjoyed caring for the animals during her years on the farm. She never returned to Germany. They moved to Callaway in 1980. Her husband died Aug. 28, 1981. They had no children.

Mrs. Johnston is survived by nieces and nephews in Germany.

She was also preceded in death by her parents.

Memorials are suggested to the Callaway District Hospital Foundation.

Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in Rose Hill Cemetery in Callaway with the Rev. Lincoln Justice officiating.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the Timm-Reynolds-Love Funeral Home in Callaway.

Marcella Lee

GRANT — Marcella Lee of Englewood, Colo., died Sept. 30, 2000, at the Julia Temple Alzheimer's unit in Englewood. She was 81.

She was born icon Oct. 7, 1918, in Chase County to Adolf and Bertha Teply Voda. She attended rural school through the eighth grade.

On Dec. 30, 1939, she married Wayne Lee at Wallace. They lived on their farm southeast of Elsie for 28 years. They retired in 1968 and moved to Loveland, Colo. After her husband died in 1997, she was moved to the Harvard Square assisted living complex and then was moved to the Julia Temple Alzheimer's unit in 1998. She had been an active member of St. John's Catholic Church.

Mrs. Lee is survived by her daughter, Phyllis Neff, both of Englewood; a brother, Ed (Rosemary) Voda of Ogallala; two grandsons, Brian and Nathan Neff of the Denver area; and other relatives and friends.

She was also preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Cecella Neverve and Frances Jewell.

Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in the Grant Cemetery with the Rev. Joe Stelle officiating.

Bullock-Long Funeral Home is in charge.

Dorothy Louise Leth

Dorothy Louise Leth, 81, a lifetime resident of North Platte died Sept. 30, 2000, at Chancellor Place at Aspen Park in North Platte.

She was born icon Jan. 30, 1919, to Arthur S. and Georgia M. Raasch Allen in North Platte. She attended school in North Platte and graduated from North Platte High School.

On Feb. 27, 1940, she married Lee H. Leth Sr. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and was active in the ladies groups. She enjoyed living in the country and growing her gardens. Her grandchildren were important to her and she showed their pictures to everyone.

Mrs. Leth is survived by a son, Robert (Angela) of Gordon; a sister, Gertrude Hake of Grant; a brother, Robert Allen of Kent, Wash.; and three grandchildren, Emma, Kayla and Scott Leth, all of Gordon.

She was preceded in death by her husband on Feb. 8, 1996; a son, Lee Jr. on March 25, 1997; her parents; and two sisters, Mildred Leth and Elsie Joy.

Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church in North Platte with the Rev. James Hawley officiating.

The body was cremated and there will be no visitation. Those wishing to sign the register book may do so from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. today, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday at Adams and Swanson Funeral Home in North Platte.

Vic McCormick

GRANT — Vic McCormick, 94, of Grant died Oct. 1, 2000, at the Grant Hospital.

He was born icon Nov. 12, 1905, near Madrid to Luther and Mary Quarnburg McCormick. He attended school in Madrid through the tenth grade.

On June 25, 1925, he married Carrie Wheeler at Julesburg. They lived in Grant, where he worked for the Co-op. In 1945, they moved to Elsie where he helped build, and later managed, the Elsie Co-op. In 1959, they returned to Grant. He and his son established McCormick and Son. In 1995, he moved to the Golden Ours Convalescent Home.

Mr. McCormick is survived by three daughters, Virginia (Glenn) Ford of Grant, Geneva (Merrill) Leonard of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Janette (Larry) Miller of Peoria, Ill.; a son, Garnie (Jan) of Apple Valley, Minn.; 15 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife in 1993; two sons, Richard, an infant, in 1941 and Duane in 1999; his parents; three sisters; and six brothers.

A memorial has been established.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. today at the Grant United Methodist Church with the Rev. Larry Nothstine officiating. Burial will be in the Grant Cemetery.

Margaret A. Myers

ARNOLD — Margaret A. Myers, 100, of Arnold died Sept. 29, 2000, at the Callaway District Hospital.

She was born icon Aug. 28, 1900, at Wolbach to Anders and Sarah Steenson Carlson.

On Aug. 6, 1924, she married Glen A. Myers in Central City. They had four children. They had a store along with the Post Office in Logan for four years. Then they moved to Stapleton and operated the Eastside Service station and the service station in Gandy. After four years they moved to Arnold to operate a cafe, bar, pool hall and dance hall. She was a member of St. Agnes Altar Society and the American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed sewing and making clothes, quilts and afghans. She also enjoyed fancy work.

Mrs. Myers is survived by two sons, Bob and Jim (Thema); a daughter-in-law, Doris Myers; two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Carlson and Ruth Johnson; a brother-in-law, Paul (Olivia) Kelley; 13 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband; a daughter, Lois Ann Nelson; a son, Dean; three sisters; four brothers; and two grandsons.

Memorials are suggested to the St. Agnes Catholic Church or the Arnold Emergency Medical Technicians.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the church in Arnold with the Rev. James Novakowski officiating. Burial will be in the Arnold Cemetery.

Rosary will be at 7:30 p.m. today at the church.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today at the Arnold Funeral Home.

Roy Troyer

CHEYENNE, Wyo. — Roy Troyer of Cheyenne, Wyo., formerly of Arnold, died Sept. 29, 2000, while swimming near his fishing boat in the east arm of the Llewelen bay of Lake Powell in Utah. He was 67.

He was born icon Jan. 12, 1933, in Arnold, Neb., to Bert and Blanche Troyer. He and his two sisters, Louise and Joanne, grew up in Arnold. The family lived in Porland, Ore., from 1941 and 1945, and his father worked on war ships. In 1951, he accepted a football scholarship to the University of Nebraska, where he excelled at nose tackle and linebacker.

In 1953, Roy was drafted and served two years in a mechanized division of the Army, cleaning up the ruins of bombed-out Germany. In 1955, Roy returned to Nebraska and earned a bachelor's degree in teaching at Kearney State College. He also earned All Conference Linebacker in his senior year.

He married and moved to Cheyenne in 1957, where he accepted a football-coaching job at Carey Junior High School. In 1968, he earned a master's in education at the University of Wyoming. He accepted the post of secondary principal at Johnson Junior High school and head principal at East High School in 1972. In 1980, he joined a business partnership in Cheyenne that invested in various development opportunities across Wyoming. His most recent business venture was the formation of the Rim Rock West Development Company that planned and built new communities across Wyoming.

On Dec. 22, 1983, he married Sandi in Vail, Colo. They traveled and fished extensively. Roy loved the outdoors and was an accomplished hunter, scuba diver and snow skier and he enjoyed boat fishing.

Mr. Troyer is survived by his wife; his three surviving children, Scott Troyer, Marla Bonds and Stephanie Brocker and their their families; stepchildren, Steve, Keylee Jo; and six grandchildren.

A memorial celebration will be at 3 p.m. Friday at the Hitching Post Inn.

The body was cremated in Kanab, Utah, by Mosdell Mortuary.
