John Bierbower

John Bierbower, 69, of Aurora, died Wednesday, June 20, 2007 at Hamilton Manor in Aurora.

Funeral services were Saturday, June 23 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Aurora with Fr. Dennis Hunt and Rev. Karl Larson officiating. Burial was in the Aurora Cemetery.

John Richard Bierbower, youngest son of James C. and Margaret (Luby) Bierbower, was born icon Sept. 25, 1937 in Lincoln. Shortly thereafter the family moved to Giltner where his father owned and operated the Giltner Gazette newspaper.

He attended Giltner Public Schools where he participated in baseball, basketball and track. He earned honorable mention all-state Class D team in basketball. He graduated in 1954 as valedictorian of his class at the age of 16.

He attended Western State College in Gunnison, Colo. on a track scholarship. Later, he attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, majoring in economics. He graduated in 1960.

He married Mary Louise Oswald June 11, 1960 at St. Mary's Catholic Church.

During his life, he was employed as an auditor for Gulf Oil, then as a sales representative for W.R. Grace. He then began farming in the Giltner area and continued until his retirement in 2000.

He was an active member in many organizations and in the community. He spent time in the U.S. Navy, earning an honorable discharge. For 20 years he served as a volunteer for the Aurora Fire Department. For four years he represented the First Ward on the Aurora City Council and later served on the Aurora Planning Commission. He was a board member for Farmer's Union and was a member of the Lion's Club, St. Mary's Catholic Church and was involved in the Jaycee racing program.

He loved playing with his grandchildren. He enjoyed meeting with his friends and family and "actively discussing" a wide variety of subjects. He followed the Nebraska Cornhuskers football team, attending many home, away and bowl games. He also was an avid car and racing enthusiast. He traveled with his wife and five children to many destinations over the years.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Bierbower; five children, Julie (Philip) Shively of Aurora, Linda (Kevin) Gustafson of Giltner, John H. Bierbower of Aurora, Jane (Lee) Hathaway of Scottsdale, Ariz. and David (Terri) Bierbower of Lincoln; seven grandchildren, Jennifer Harney, Grace Hathaway, Avery Hathaway, Reid Gustafson, Sara Hathaway, Jill Bierbower and Joel Bierbower; one brother, Dr. Robert Bierbower of Shelby; one sister, Joan Kersey of College Station, Tex.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, James "Mick" Bierbower; four sisters, June Bierbower, Margaret DeBord, MaryLou Albracht and infant sister Barbara.

Dennis Land

Dennis Land, 58, of Kearney died Thursday, June 21, 2007 at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.

Funeral services were Saturday, June 23 at the O'Brien – Straatmann Funeral Home in Kearney with Rev. Dr. Marvin Koelling officiating. Burial was in the Aurora Cemetery.

Mr. Land was born icon April 24, 1949 in Aurora to Marvel and Betty (Grigsby) Land. He grew up in Aurora and received his education there.

He married Carla Hansen on June 27, 1970 in Hampton. On April 16, 2002, he married Rita Joslin in Kearney. They lived in Kearney where he was owned Heartland Sandblasting and Heartland Tree Service. Work was his hobby. He enjoyed 4-wheeling and camping and he loved his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Rita of Kearney; sons, Derick of Aurora and Dustin of Kearney; daughters, Janet (Shawn) Miller of Firth, Heather (Dan) Telford of Scottsbluff and Destiny Land of Aurora; step-daughter, Jennifer (Michael) Godfrey of Chicago, IL; parents, Marvel and Betty Land of Aurora and father and mother in-law, Alfred and Virginia Garcia of Albuquerque, N.M.; sister, Mary Land and husband Charlie Moore of Giltner; five grandchildren, Brysen Godfrey, Wyatt Telford, Cole Miller, Rylee Miller and Breanna Telford; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by several aunts and uncles.

Louise Daniel

Former Aurora resident Louise A. Daniel, 83, of Lincoln, died Tuesday, June 19, 2007 in Lincoln.

The family is honoring her request for no services. Following cremation there will be a private family burial in the Aurora Cemetery.

Mrs. Daniel was born icon Oct. 16, 1923 in Middleburg, Va., to Davenport Blackwell and Lena Foster (Downs) Allison. She graduated from Washington Lee High School in Arlington, Va. and earned an associate degree from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln.

She served as a sergeant in the United States Marine Corps, Women's Reserve. She married Edward G. Daniel, Aug. 25, 1945 in Arlington, Va.

Survivors include her children, Allison (Gary) Petersen of Walton; Jane (Brian) Awford of Cranbrook, England and Edward A. Daniel, of Owings Mills, Md.; grandchildren, Daniel (Sondra) Petersen, Megan Petersen,Nicola Awford, Jane Daniel, Louise Daniel; two great grandchildren.

Memorials are directed to the Aurora Alice Farr Library, c/o Hamilton Community Foundation, Box 283, Aurora, NE 68818.

Ruby Hilligas

Ruby Hilligas, 93, of Aurora, died Wednesday, June 20, 2007 at Memorial Community Care in Aurora.

Her body was anatomically donated and she requested no services. Higby-McQuiston Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. Condolences may be e-mailed to the family through the mortuary website at higbymortuary.com.

Ruby Barbra Hilligas, daughter of Ed and Lena (Satory) Hilligas, was born icon Aug. 24, 1913 north of Hampton on the Hilligas homestead. She was raised on the family farm and graduated from Marquette High School. She moved to Lincoln where she graduated from beauty school. She worked as a beautician in Lincoln for many years until she returned to Aurora in the 1970s.

She spent her last years at Colonial Corners, East Park Villa and then Memorial Community Care.

She was a lifetime member of the E.U.B. Church in Marquette, then transferred to Aurora United Methodist Church.

She loved to travel, crochet, quilt and make craft items.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Lottie.

Sandy Young

Sandy Young, 53, of Friend, died Saturday, June 23, 2007 at her home.

Funeral services were Tuesday, June 26 at the Friend Christian Assembly with Pastor Andy Majorins officiating. Interment was at Andrew Cemetery in Friend.

Sandra Joy Klute was born icon on March 18, 1954 in York to Herbert and Joy (Bailey) Klute. She attended St Peter's Lutheran School in Hampton and always cherished the Bible teaching she received there. She graduated from Hampton High School in 1972.

She married her high school sweetheart, Dale Roy Young, Jr. on Oct. 6, 1973. They began their life together in Grand Island and then lived in San Diego, Calif. before permanently making their home in Friend in 1979. They built their business, Young's Welding and Repair, together and she worked alongside him until just before she died.

She was a devoted Christian and dedicated her life to serving God and others. She was a faithful volunteer, teaching Bible school, Sunday school, AWANA, Joy Club and many Bible studies, including a weekly Bible study at the Friend Manor for many years. She was an active member of Moms In Touch and the Friend Chamber of Commerce and organized the Friend 4th of July celebration in addition to other community events.

She was a wonderful cook and gardener and generously shared these talents with others until she was not longer able to do so. Many subscribers of the Friend Sentinel were readers of her "From My Perspective" articles, which perfectly captured her sense of humor, practical approach to life and desire for others to know God as she did.

Her family was very important to her and they will always cherish their memories of her wonderful sense of humor, endless patience and her courage through her 16 year struggle with Parkinson's Disease.

Survivors include her husband of 33 years, Dale Young, Jr. of Friend; four daughters, Karen (Shawn) Hanneman of Weeping Water, Laura (Kirk) Steffensen of Cheney, Susan (Matt) Kathol of Hartington and Christy (Aaron) Svehla of Hartington, and four grandchildren: Brayden Kathol, Laney Kathol, Chase Svehla and Hunter Svehla, all of Hartington; her father-in-law, Dale Young, Sr. of Hampton; five sisters, Carol (David) Dittberner of Alexandria, Minn., Ruth (Roger) Heins of Sutton, Linda (Warren) Creager of Stillwater, Minn., Judy (Dick) Johnson of West Point and Betty (Vern) Blase of Grand Rapids, Mich.; three brothers, Fred Klute of Atlantic, Iowa, Dale (Shawna) Klute of Kearney and Dan (Kim) Klute of Stromsburg; two sisters-in-law, Pam (John) Janzen of Aurora and Jamie (Mark) Muramoto of West Valley City, Utah; other relatives and friends, particularly her "adopted" daughter, Jessica Krasser.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Herbert and Joy Klute, and her mother-in-law, Darlene Young.

George S. Molczyk

George S. Molczyk, 76, of Grand Island, died Thursday, June 21, 2007 at St. Francis Medical Center.

Services were Monday, June 25 at St. Leo's Catholic Church with Fr. John R. Rademacher officiating. Burial was in the Grand Island City Cemetery.

Mr. Molczyk was born icon March 25, 1931 at Spalding, the son of Charles Stanley and Dorothy F. (Kowalski) Molczyk. He attended grade school in St. Libory and high school in Alda, quitting in the tenth grade to work for the Union Pacific Railroad to help support the family.

On June 19, 1951 he married Dorothy E. Wendt.

In 1953 he got laid off from the UPRR so they moved to Omaha where he worked for Ed Burns remodeling old houses until he got laid off after 2½ years. They then moved to Long Beach, Calif. and in 1956 they returned to Grand Island where he was employed in the Montgomery Wards Automotive Department. In 1959 he began working for the Grand Island Fire Department as a firefighter, retiring after 21 years. From 1960 to 1964 he was co-proprietor of Molczyk's Coin Shop in Grand Island.

During his retirement, he worked for the Propane Co. in St. Paul, then as a driver for 12½ years on the Hall County Handi-Bus/Senior Citizens Industries. During his retirement, he also worked as a security guard at Husker Harvest Days and at Fonner Park.

He explored many interests throughout the years, including fishing, inventing new fish baits, growing giant Australian worms, bodybuilding, woodworking and home improvement, camping, traveling, wine making, gardening and coin collecting. He enjoyed Nebraska football and was an armchair quarterback. He loved to visit with his brother Ray, his children and grandchildren.

Survivors include one son, Larry (Dorothy) Molczyk of Aurora; five daughters, Cathy (Tim) Bartlett of Grand Island, Doris (Daryl) Bartlett of Grand Island, Beverly (Scott) Meyers of Grand Island, Gail (Ron) Evans of Anchorage, Alaska, Karen (Bill) Earl of Grand Island; one brother, Raymond (Adeline) of Grand Island; two sisters, Rose Zelasney of Schuyler and Lorraine (Mel) Oberschulte of Grand Island; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy E. Molczyk; brother, Clement; grandson, Joshua; and his parents.

Memorials are directed to the family.

Donna Christenson

Donna Mae Christenson, 62, of Riverside, Calif., died at her home on June 7, 2007 after a long bout with cancer.

Private family services will be held in Riverside on June 29. In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations be made to the American Cancer Society.

She was born icon Jan. 5, 1945. She married former Marquette resident Larry Christenson and was the daughter-in-law of longtime Hamilton County residents Roland and Doris Christenson.

Survivors include her husband, Larry; her father, Ray Kelsey; one sister, Judy; two brothers, Dennis and Danny; three step-children, Robin (Jamie) Christenson, Karensa Christenson, all of California and Jeff (Brenda) Christenson of Sterling, Colo; three brothers-in-law, Gerald (Linda) Christenson of North Platte, Doyle (Katherine) Christenson of Marquette and Murry (Marilyn) Christenson of Grand Island; many nieces, nephews and friends.

Vickie J. Cline

Vickie J. Cline, 50, of Central City, died Sunday, June 24, 2007 at her home in Central City after a battle with cancer.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, June 27, 2007 at 10 a.m. at Wagner Funeral Home in Central City with Pastor Doug McHargue officiating. Burial will be in the Central City Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday, June 26, from 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home.

She was born icon on Aug. 2, 1956 in Sherman, Texas to Ernest and Barbara (Twigger) Soard. She grew up in Joplin, Mo. and graduated from Parkwood High School in 1974.

She married Robert Cline on Aug. 3, 1974 in Miami, Okla. They lived in Central City where she worked for Don's Electric and the Central City Mall until 1988. She then worked at Waffles and More and the Bowling Alley up until the time of her death.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Central City, the VFW Auxiliary Post # 534 in Joplin, Mo. She was an avid golfer and enjoyed bowling, cards and spending time with friends. Her greatest joy was her grandchildren. She battled a long fight with cancer and will forever be known for her bravery and strength.

Survivors include her father and stepmother, Ernest and Phyllis Soard of Joplin, Mo.; a son, Robert D. Cline Jr. (Stephanie) of Malcolm, a daughter, Chris (Shane) Welte of Central City; four grandchildren, Alex Cline, Zackary Cline, Cassidi Cline and Zander Welte; a brother and sister-in-law, Eddie and Linda Soard of Joplin, Mo. and two sisters and a brother-in-law, Janie Patrick of Webb City, Mo. and Patti and David King of Charlottesville, Va.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Barbara Soard.

Leila Ackerson

Former Hampton resident Leila L. Baack Ackerson, 77, died on April 24, 2007 at home in Omaha after a long battle with cancer.

A memorial service was held in Omaha at Kountze Memorial Lutheran Church on May 1.

She was born icon Jan. 26, 1930 to Barthold and Lillie (Brauer) Baack of Hampton. She attended Hampton High School and then the University of Nebraska School of Nursing.

She worked as a registered nurse at Clarkson Hospital in Omaha for 27 years.

She was married to Earl (Don) Ackerson for 53 years until his death in 2006.

Survivors include her son, Randy (Susan) Ackerson and two grandchildren of Wichita, Kan. and daughter, Linda Ackerson of Omaha; and two sisters, Marlene Troester of Aurora and Glenda Borkenhagen of Omaha.

STOCKALL

Michael K. "Doc" Stockall, 47, of Whitman, died May 16, 1997 at his home in Whitman. He was born icon June 15, 1949 at North Platte to Robert I. and Grace Maire Dillon Stockall. He graduated from North Platte High school in 1967 and attended McCook Community College and Mid-Plains Community College for a few years.
Mr. Stockall entered the U.S. Army, serving at Fitzsimmons Medical Center in Denver. It was there that his nickname of "Doc" started.
He was discharged on July 21, 1976, and was employed by Burlington Northern Railroad until h e was diagnosed with cancer in March 1996.
Survivors include his father Robert Stockall of North Platte; his wife, Vicky, of Whitman; two daughters, Jody (Kevin) Wilde of Belle Fourche, SD and Sara of Whitman; a son, Casey of Whitman; a granddaughter Katie; two brothers, Roger (Sandy) of Hershey and Lynn of North Platte; a sister Linda (Howard) Morrison of North Platte; his stepmother, Nadine Stockall of North Platte; a sister-in-law, Joyce (Mark) Pollick of Denver; and several nephews and nieces.
Services were held May 20, 1997 at the Odean Colonial Chapel in North Platte and the Whitman Community Church in Whitman with the Rev. Lloyd Lenz officiating. Military honors followed with burial in the Whitman Cemetery.
Memorials are suggested to the Stockall children for an education fund or to the Whitman Cemetery.

RUBY MCCREATH

Ruby McCreath, 93, a resident of Seneca since 1912, died May 16, 1997 at the Pioneer Memorial Rest Home in Mullen.
She was born icon January 21, 1904 at Ortella Valley to Sam and Elizabeth McGinnis. She married William 'Bill' G. McCreath at Chappell on July 26, 1937. They lived in Seneca where Ruby owned and operated the Burlington Cafe.
Mrs. McCreath was a member of the VFW Auxiliary, of which she had been president and was a member of the Thedford American Legion.
Survivors include a nephew, Max E. McGinnis of Cheyenne, WY and a niece, Jone Farrell of Council Bluffs, IA and many great and great great nieces and nephews.
Services were held May 21, 1997 at the Seneca Church of Christ with the Rev. Linda Martin officiating. Burial was in the Purdum Cemetery.
Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice.

NEAL E. JAMES

Neal E. James, age 81, of Kimball, NE died May 19, 1997 in the Kimball County Manor at Kimball. He was born icon May 11, 1916 to Fay and Sallie (Holland) James at Mullen, NE.
He graduated from Mullen High School in 1933. On September 19, 1936, he married Maxine L. Toombs at York, NE. They worked on many ranches in he Sandhills area before opening the Kimball Locker Plant in 1949. He retired in 1976.
Neal was a charter member of the Kimball Chamber of commerce and a member of the Junior Chamber of Commerce. He served on the board of directors for the Kimball County Agriculture society and the Nebraska Locker and Processors Association. He also served on the city council and Kimball-Banner County Fair Board. He was a member of the Kimball Volunteer Fire department and the Eagles Club Aerie 3889 and an honorary member of the Kimball FFA Chapter.
Survivors include his wife, Maxine of Kimball; daughter, Vera Cunningham of Denver, CO; daughter-in-law, Marilyn James of Escondido, CA; brothers and sisters-in-law, Wesley and Maxine James of Lincoln, NE, Eugene and Dorothy James of Mullen, NE and Dolores James of Purdum, NE; sisters and brothers-in-law, Clara Stoner of Portland, OR, Iola and Estel Hamilton of Alliance, NE and Betty and Erik Levine of North Platte, NE; grandchildren, Roxy and husband Bill Doogan of Larkspur, CO, John James of Washington, D.C., Jeff James of Lincoln, NE and Brandon Cunningham of Scottsbluff, NE; great grandchildren, Pierce and Connor Doogan; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his son Stephen L. James; sisters, vera James and Florence Pew; and brother, Harold James
Services were held Friday, May 23, 1997 at the Cantrell Funeral Home in Kimball with the rev. Dwayne Hunzeker officiating. Burial was in the Kimball Cemetery. A memorial has been established in care of the family.
