Frances Brown

COLUMBUS - Frances Brown, 85, of Columbus died Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2000, at Arbor Manor in Fremont.

Services are pending with McKown Funeral Home in Columbus in charge of arrangements.

Wayne Leonard Anthony, 67, of Nebraska City, died at St. Mary’s Community Hospital in Nebraska City on April 16, 2008. He was born icon April 11, 1941 in Omaha to Leonard and Violet (Anderson) Anthony. He married Mary Jane Folkerts on Jan. 27, 1963 in Talmage.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Jane Anthony of Nebraska City; sons Shane Anthony and wife Kyna of St. Charles, Mo., and Blane Anthony and wife Emily of Talmage; one granddaughter, Gretchen Anthony; brother Warren Anthony and wife Joan of Elkhorn; sister Joyce Madsen of Omaha; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Harvey and Mary Folkerts of Rochelle, Ill.; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother-in-law Raymond Madsen; and parents-in-law, Harvey and Aleta Folkerts.

He lived in Talmage before moving to Nebraska City four years ago.

He worked as an accountant for various local accounting firms for several years prior to his retirement.

He formerly served in the Nebraska National Guard.

He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Talmage of which he served on the church board and taught Sunday school; Talmage American Legion; past treasurer for Respite; member of Nebraska City Rotary Club; and served on the Talmage Rural Fire Department Board of Directors.

He loved music, farming, outdoors, family and friends.

Visitation is 1-9 p.m. Friday at Marshall Funeral Chapel with the family greeting friends from 6-8 p.m.

Funeral services are at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 19, at Faith Lutheran Church in Talmage. Rev. Douglas Allen, Rev. Marsha Anderson and Rev. William Dressen will officiate.

Burial will be at St. Paul Cemetery, Talmage.

Pallbearers are Kenneth Kruse, Keith Edmonds, Jerry LaVigne, Ray Gadeken, Craig Schroeder, Doyle Schroeder, Ben Burns, Don Wittler and Paul Peterson.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Faith Lutheran Sunday School or Talmage Fire Department.

Marshall Funeral Chapel of Nebraska City is in charge of arrangements.

Earl T. Story

Earl T. Story, 96, of Nebraska City, died April 15, 2008 at the Morton House. He was born icon on June 20, 1911 on the family farm west of Rossville, Kan., the son of Thomas Daniel and Laura Elizabeth (Hovey) Story. He married Viola Mae Johnson on June 2, 1936 in Clarinda, Iowa.

He was baptized on April 28, 1926 in Auburn. He graduated from Nebraska City High School in 1930 then worked at Safeway Grocery Stores from 1932-1947. He served in the United States Navy during World War II from Sept. 1, 1943 to Dec. 10, 1945.

He and his wife settled in Nebraska City where they owned and operated West End Grocery “The Little Pink Store” from 1955 until 1973 when he retired.

He told stories and enjoyed telling about “his” kids coming into the store to buy penny candy. He often said that he raised two generations of kids at the store. He enjoyed golfing until he was 93. He was a member of Western Star Lodge #2, the Eagles Aerie #968 in Nebraska City, the Elks, the American Legion Post #8 and U.C.T.

He is survived by nieces and nephews Don Fiel, Una Mae, Janice Fiel, John Fiel, and Beverly Gola, all of California, Barbara Duncan and husband Charles of Lincoln, Zoe Thummel and husband Bill of Nebraska City, Shelly Jackson and husband Kenny of Omaha, Debra Concannon and husband Terry of Shawnee, Kan., Sharon Reddy and husband Paul of Las Cruces, N.M. and Billie Sandahl of Nebraska City; five great-nieces and nephews, Patricia Ann Reinhardt and husband Mark, Penny Asher and husband Keith, Billy Duncan and wife Desiree, Matt Thummel and MayreneThummel; 10 great-great-nieces and nephews; special friends Richard Borrego, Larry DeFreece and Roger Pieper; and other family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Vi; brother Dick Story and wife Audrey; and sisters Rosa Hess and husband Wally and Leona Fiel and husband Jack.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 19, at Gude Mortuary in Nebraska City with Rev. Jerry Albright officiating. Burial will follow at the Wyuka Cemetery with full military honors being presented by the Nebraska Army National Guard Funeral Honors Detail.

There will be open visitation after 3 p.m. on Friday, April 18, at the mortuary. Memorials may be directed to the First Christian Church.

Gude Mortuary is in charge of the arrangements.

W. Gail Powers

W. Gail Powers, 89, Tabor, died Monday, April 14, 2008, at his home.

Surviving locally are his wife, Darlene, Tabor, and sister, Karen Weatherhead and her husband Stan, Tabor.

Graveside services for the interment of ashes are Friday, April 18, at 2 p.m. at the Tabor Cemetery.

There will be no viewing or visitation. A memorial fund was established.

Crawford-Marshall Funeral Chapel, Tabor, is in charge of arrangements.

Vernon “Brick” Llewellyn

Vernon “Brick” Llewellyn, U.S. Army Reserve, 89, Fresno, Calif., formerly Nebraska City, died recently.

Llewellyn and his brother, Marvin, attended and graduated from Nebraska City High School. He was administrator assistant for the local National Guard 134th unit. In 1942, they all left for Little Rock, Ark., to train for World War II assignments. The unit was split up. Llewellyn was assigned to the Aleutian Islands until the end of the war. After World War II, he returned to Nebraska City and married Violet Harger, who preceded him.

Llewellyn and his family moved to California where he was in the same capacity for the National Guard until he retired.

His brother, Marvin, has multiple sclerosis and lives at the newest Eastern Nebraska Veterans Home at Bellevue.

Danny Dean Dappen

Danny Dean Dappen, 56, of Rapid City, S.D. and formerly of Nebraska City, died Tuesday, April 1, 2008 at the Rapid City Regional Hospital in Rapid City. He was born icon Jan. 30, 1952, in Nebraska City to Merle Gene and Nadine Esther (Curry) Dappen.

He graduated from Nebraska City High School then the University of Nebraska in 1976 with an M.B.A. in marketing and management. He worked in business in Minneapolis, Minn., and Lawrence, Kan., before retiring in South Dakota to be near his sister, Donna.

He was preceded in death by his father on Jan. 9, 1977; mother on July 24, 2007, several aunts and uncles.

He is survived by his sister, Donna Johnson of Rapid City; niece Ericka Meyer and husband Kevin of Portland, Ore.; two aunts, Francis Curry of Warsaw, Mo., and Darlene Banasik of Sheraton, Iowa; other relatives and many friends.

Visitation will be held on Monday, April 14, at 10 a.m. with the family greeting family and friends from 10 a.m. until service time at Peterson Mortuary Chapel.

Memorial service will be held on Monday, April 14, at 11:30 a.m. at Peterson Mortuary Chapel. The family will hold a private interment of ash at Wyuka Cemetery in Nebraska City at a later date.

Memorials are suggest to the first Christian Church in Nebraska City.

Peterson Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Nadine Esther Dappen

Nadine Esther Dappen, 81, of Rapid City, S.D., and formerly of Nebraska City, died Tuesday, July 24, 2007, at the Rapid City Regional Hospital in Rapid City. She was born icon on Jan. 23, 1926 near Fairfax, Mo., to Bert Franklin and Flosie (Baker) Curry. She graduated from the Rock Port High School in 1943. She moved to Nebraska City in 1945. Nadine and Merle Gene Dappen were married Feb. 22, 1948, in Omaha. She was a beautician and ran a Fanci Beauty Shop out of her home.

Robert Bruce Huber

Robert Bruce Huber, 79, Nebraska City, died Wednesday, March 19, 2008, at his home. He was born icon Dec. 3, 1928, at Nebraska City, son of George and Daisy (Price) Huber. He married Joan Volkmer Feb. 18, 1958, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Paul.

Huber served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean conflict from 1951-53. He was a hard-working and dedicated farmer who worked hard to provide for his loving family. He was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church near Avoca. He was a proud father and grandfather who always enjoyed spending time with his family.

Surviving are his wife, Joan, Nebraska City; five daughters, Kris Barrett and husband Jerry, and Gayle Wurtele and husband Lou, all Nebraska City; Lisa Buchholz and husband Jim, Otoe; Lori Everett and husband David, Union; and Nadine Meyer and husband Bill, Avoca; 13 grandchildren; siblings, Mary Staack, Syracuse; Beatrice Stastny, Yerington, Nev.; Dorothy Gruenemeyer, Indianapolis; Ben Huber, Schuyler; Yvonne Smith, Boise, Idaho; and Karen Reinecke, Huntington, Calif.; and a host of other family members and friends.

He was preceded by his parents and a grandson.

Funeral mass was Monday, March 24, at St. Paulinus Catholic Church, Syracuse. Interment was at St. Mary’s Cemetery. Military services were conducted by members of the U.S. Marines Funeral Honor Detail.

Memorials may be given to Tabitha Hospice, ALS of the Heartland or Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Avoca.

Irene C. Wellsandt

Irene C. Wellsandt, age 90 of Talmage passed away on Thursday afternoon; August 21, 2008 at the Ambassador in Nebraska City.

Irene was born icon on February 26, 1918 near Cook, NE ; the daughter of John H. and Minnie (Holtgrewe) Schacht. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ-Osage near Cook. She attended rural school near her farm home and graduated from Talmage High School with the class of 1936. She was united in marriage to Norman Ernest Wellsandt on April 16, 1940 at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ-Osage, and to this union two children.

The early years of their marriage were spent on a farm near Paul. In the fall of 1961 they moved to her parents farm northwest of Talmage. In October of 1977 she moved into Talmage where she resided until moving to the Ambassador on December 21, 2007 due to declining health. Irene was a devoted wife and mother who loved caring for her family. She enjoyed cooking and collecting cookbooks and recipes. On the weekends you would often see Irene following Norman to many dances, where he was the drummer for several local bands. Later on, Irene enjoyed attending her grandson’s activities. She was one who never met a stranger and she developed many friendships as a result of her warm personality. During her early retirement years, she worked at WOTA in Nebr. City and The Diamond in Talmage. She was a member of St. John’s United Church of Christ- McWilliams and the Eagles Auxiliary.

Those left to cherish her memory include her son Robert Wellsandt and wife Diane of Diller, NE; grandchildren; Jason Wellsandt of Diller, NE, Matthew Wellsandt and fiancé Cheryl Leong of Centennial, CO and Michael Wellsandt and special friend Liz Heine of Omaha, NE; nieces; JoAnn Wellsandt and husband Bud of Omaha and Debra Brown and husband Ron of Yukon, OK; other family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband Norman on October 19, 1977, an infant daughter, sister Rosalyn Biere and her husband Elmer and special friend Arnold Biere.

Funeral Services will be held Tuesday; August 26, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. at St. John’s Church of Christ Church-McWilliams near Talmage, NE with Rev. Curtis Rieger officiating. Burial will follow at St. Paul’s Cemetery in rural Talmage, NE. A family prayer service will be held at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at the church. There will be open visitation at the mortuary from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday.

Naomi Frakes

Naomi Frakes, 100, died on Friday, Aug. 15, 2008 at her home in Nebraska City surrounded by her family. She was born icon on Dec. 25, 1907 in Percival, the daughter of Frank and Emma A. (Harris) Lord. She married George Frakes on July 27, 1932 at Holton, Kan.

She was a devoted wife and mother. She was a member of Cornerstone Church and had a deep love for Jesus.

She is survived by her daughters Nadine Frakes of Nebraska City and Chris Jordan and husband Jerry of Bellevue; grandchildren Angie Carvell and husband Josh and their children, Victoria Christine and Alexandria Michele, and Brandon Jordan and wife Katie and their children, Alexis Michele, Cean Scott and Kaelan William; other family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband George on Dec. 28, 1986 and two brothers, Asa and Sturgis, and a sister, Ethel.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 19, at Gude Mortuary in Nebraska City with the Rev. Rob Connor officiating. Burial will follow at Wyuka Cemetery in Nebraska City. Family visitation will be Monday evening from 6-8 p.m. at the Gude Mortuary.

Memorials may be directed to Cornerstone Church, Tabitha Hospice or St. Mary’s Hospital Foundation.

Rich B “Bob” Golden

Rich B “Bob” Golden, age 81 of Thurman, IA; passed away on Thursday; May 14, 2009 at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Bob was born icon on December 9, 1927 at Thurman; the son of Basil W. and Marie (Bobbitt) Golden. He attended country school and then graduated from the Sidney High School with the class of 1946. He was united in marriage to Ila J. Hickey on February 18, 1950 at the Presbyterian Church in Red Oak, IA.

Bob was a long-time farmer in the Thurman, IA area. He also was an avid pilot and loved to fly his airplane. He was very active in the community. He served on the Fremont County Board of Trustees from 1972 to 2008; was treasurer of the Grandview Cemetery since 1960 (49 years); served on the Drainage District Board and an elder for the Presbyterian Church. Bob also served his country for six years in the National Guard.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Ila of Thurman, IA; children Cynthia Henderson and husband James D. of Westboro, MO and Gregory J. Golden and wife Teresa of Thurman, IA; 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; sister Rosemarie Hall of Thurman, IA and other family and friends.

He was preceded in death by a son Rich Bobbitt “Rick” Golden, Jr. in 1984; an infant daughter Eleanor; brother James Golden and his parents.

Funeral Services will be held Monday; May 18, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at Rash-Gude Funeral Home in Hamburg, IA with Keith Hickey officiating. Burial will follow the service at Grandview Cemetery at rural Sidney, IA.

The family will greet friends from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday (May 17) at the Rash-Gude Funeral Home in Hamburg.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Sidney Fire/Rescue Dept. in Sidney, IA.

Frances Aileen Bohlen

Frances Aileen Bohlen, age 92 of Nebraska City, NE; formerly of Percival, IA passed away on Sunday; May 10, 2009 at Golden Living Center in Nebraska City.She was born icon on July 25, 1916 in Thurman, IA; the youngest child of Jefferson Frank and Ida May (Fletcher) Cloyd. She was united in marriage to Oscar Bohlen on December 19, 1936 at Maryville, MO.

Oscar and Aileen lived and farmed in the Percival, IA community for many years. They moved to Nebraska City in 1984. She was a housewife and homemaker and also worked as a telephone operator. She was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles #968 Auxiliary.

She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews and dear friends and caregiver Kent and Lana Roumpf of Nebraska City.

She was preceded in death by her husband Oscar on April 18, 2004, three brothers and four sisters as well as her parents.

Graveside services will be held Wednesday; May12, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. at the Wyuka Cemetery in Nebraska City with Keith Hickey officiating. Burial will follow the service.
