Lorene O. Reese

Age 93 of Nebraska City passed away on Sunday; April 19, 2009 at Duff’s Friendship Villa in Nebraska City.

Lorene was born icon on August 22, 1915 southwest of Nebraska City on a farm near Paul, NE; the daughter of Anton and Caroline (Schreiter) Komma. She was united in marriage to Elmer O. Reese on June 7, 1941 at St. Paulinus Catholic Church at Syracuse, NE; and to this union a son Anthony was born.

Lorene was a housewife, homemaker and was a devoted farm wife. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Christian Mothers and the former Belmont Neighborhood Club. She loved playing pinochle and the piano and was an avid Elvis fan. Her family and her church were here greatest loves!

Survivors include her son Tony Reese and wife Kim of Nebr. City, three grandchildren: Abby Reese of Nebr. City, NE, Trenton Reese of Omaha, NE and Tanya Anderson and husband Josh of Syracuse, NE; one great-grandchild Kylie Anderson; and a brother Earl Komma of Nebraska City; other family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband in April of 1975 and a brother Robert in 1943.

Funeral Services will be held Wednesday morning at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Nebraska City with Fr. Michael McCabe officiating the Mass. Burial will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery southwest of Nebraska City.

A rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Gude Mortuary in Nebraska City.

Memorials may be given to St. Mary’s Catholic Church or the Nebr. City Rescue Squad.

Mary F. Suedmeier

Mary F. Suedmeier, age 65 of Nebraska City, NE passed away on Wednesday, April 15, 2009 at the Ambassador in Nebr. City.

Mary was born icon on May 18, 1943 in Norton, KS; the daughter of Samuel Wilbur. and Phoebe Gertrude (Olds) Kline. She graduated from Lenora Rural High School in Lenora, KS with the class of 1961. Mary then attended and graduated from beauty school in Salina, KS. She was united in marriage to Harlan Suedmeier on December 1, 1963 in Lenora, KS and to this union two children were born: John and Keri.

In addition to her job of being a devoted mother and wife, Mary worked as the bookkeeper from 1974 to 1999 at Automotive, Inc, the family business. After selling the business, Mary assumed the bookkeeping duties at Little Giant. She was a member of the SE Nebraska Right to Life, the SE Nebraska Lutherans for Life, the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League (LWML) and Christ Lutheran Church in Nebr. City, NE.

She is survived by her beloved husband of 45 years Harlan “Sid” Suedmeier of Nebr.City; son John Suedmeier of Nebr. City; daughter Keri D. Hincker and husband Scott of Unadilla, NE; one grandson Samuel, devoted and beloved sister Linda Cheatham and husband Ron of Durham, NC, sister Debra Fletcher of Loveland, CO, sister Irene Gearhart and husband Dean of North Richland Hills, TX; brother-in-law Errol Bell of Hill City, KS, dear friend Dora Rottman of Nebr. City and other family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister Marjorie Bell.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, April 20, 2009 at the Christ Lutheran Church in Nebr. City with Rev. John Cotton officiating. Graveside interment services will be held at 2:30 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery south of Johnson, NE.

Visitation is open at the mortuary after 2:00 p.m. on Sunday. The casket will also be open an hour prior to the services.at the Christ Lutheran Church in Nebr. City.

Memorials may be given to ALS in the Heartland or SE Nebraska Lutherans for Life.

Vickie Jean Cooper

Vickie Jean Cooper, age 57 of Hamburg, IA passed away on Monday, April 13, 2009 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Nebr. City, NE after a 20 year long battle with heart disease.

Vickie was born icon on June 19, 1951 in Hot Springs, SD; the daughter of Williard L. and Gertrude (Fisk) Morris. She was united in marriage to Robert W. Cooper on October 11, 1968 in Weeping Water, NE. She attended and graduated from beauty school and worked as a beautician for many years.

Vickie was a very strong woman who guided an “Army Family” while Bob went as Uncle Sam deemed necessary between the United States and Germany. Vickie was a beautician for many years. She had many hobbies over the years like cake decorating, crocheting and gardening just to name a few.

She will be remembered as a strong woman who valiantly fought heart disease until the very end. She will be cherished and missed by a family who deeply admired her strength, guidance and will to survive against the longest of odds.

Vickie is survived by her husband of 40 years, Robert Cooper of Hamburg, IA; children: Terry Cooper of Hamburg, IA; Jody Voyles and husband James of Rock Port, MO; Carla Cooper of Rock Port, MO; Bobbi Rauch of Nebr. City, NE; siblings: Sharon Thompson and husband Jim of Prescott Valley, AZ; Duane Morris of Forsythe, MT; Gary Morris of Greenwood, NE; Richard Cooper and wife Pam and Everett Cooper all of Mountain Home, AR; Twila West and husband Mike of Wabash, NE; 9 grandchildren: Kelley, Mellissa, Billy, Amber, Devon, Samantha, Megan, Joey and Robbie and other family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her mother and father: Williard and Gertrude Morris and Bonnie and Ted Cooper; sisters Donna White and Mary Morris.

The family will greet friends from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 19, 2009 at the Rash-Gude Funeral Home in Hamburg, IA.

No formal memorial services will be held.

John A. Schlicker, Jr.

John A. Schlicker, Jr., MEMORIAL TRIBUTE

Age 64 of Nebraska City passed away peacefully at his home on Monday; April 13 surrounded by his loving family.

John was born icon on February 25, 1945 in Falls City, NE and lived there until he was 16 years old. He moved to Lincoln, NE to be near his favorite Uncle Tiny and Aunt Dixie Metzger. This move also gave him his first marriage in 1965 and three children: Irene Hirschman and husband Matt, Serena Schlicker and Johnny Schlicker. He later moved to Nebraska City, NE. This move gave him his second marriage on December 7, 1974 and two more children: Shannon Cole and husband Bert and Vanessa Kenter and husband Mike. He quit moving!

Boating, fishing and socializing were his hobbies. John Boy alias Big Bad John and Sweet Diane(their nicknames for each other) were frequently seen on the Missouri River and uptown. If he teased and tormented you in his laughing way, you knew you were a friend.

His favorite job was being bossed by Dick Hess of Hess Painting in Lincoln, NE. Upon Dick’s death, John established John-Dee Painting and Decorating. It was so successful that he apprenticed his son-in-law Mike for help. What an experience and good times for both of them! He retired in 2005.

Preceding him in death were his favorite aunt and uncle Tiny and Dixie, uncle’s Bill and Gary Schlicker, his beloved mother Gen and granddaughter Tayller Cole.

Surviving are his wife Diane of Nebr. City; five children: Irene Hirschman and husband Matt, Serena Schlicker and Johnny Schlicker all of Lincoln, NE; Shannon Cole and husband Bert of Auburn, NE and Vanessa Kenter and husband Mike of Nebr. City; 12 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and his best friend of 35 years Jim Stovall and family.

He will be greatly missed by so many who knew and loved him.

Services will be held Saturday morning at 11:00 a.m. at the Gude Mortuary in Nebraska City, NE.

Private inurnment services will be held at the Wyuka Cemetery in Nebr. City at a later time.

A memorial fund is being established in his memory.

Charles Edward “Ed” Mullenax

Charles Edward “Ed” Mullenax, age 67 of Nebr. City, NE passed away on Monday, April 13, 2009 at the Golden Living Center in Nebr. City.

He was born icon on January 11, 1942 in Nebraska City, NE; the son of Ocie and Dorothy (Reed) Mullenax. Ed was one who loved spending time with his family and friends. He was also an avid fisherman and Nebraska Football Fan. During his working years, he was a painter and general laborer.

He is survived by his children: Bill Mullenax of Bennet, NE; Tammy Moyer of Eagle, NE; Lori Hudson of Lincoln, NE; Lisa Mullenax of Fort Collins, CO; Jerry Mullenax of Palmyra, NE; Jennifer Mullenax of Lincoln, NE, Doshie Rodgers of Lincoln, NE; Lisa Poynor of Hamburg, IA; 11 grandchildren; sister Belva Barton and brothers: Bobbie “Bob” Mullenax of Nebraska City; Melvin Mullenax of Oscaloosa, IA and Chris Mullenax of Grand Rapids, Michigan; four nieces, nine nephews; other family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father Dorothy and Ocie, brother Clifford and sister Doshie and his wife Marlene Mullenax.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 16, 2009 at Gude Mortuary in Nebr. City, NE with Fr. Mark Cyza officiating. Burial will follow at Wyuka Cemetery in Nebr. City.

The family will greet friends from 7:00 - 8:00 p.m. on Wed. evening (Apr. 15) at the Gude Mortuary in Nebraska City

Memorials may be given to the family in Ed‘s memory.

Wanda L. Bennett

Wanda L. Bennett, age 91 of Hamburg, IA passed away on Saturday, April 11, 2009 at Tabor Manor in Tabor, IA.

Wanda was born icon on July 1, 1917 in Atchison County, MO; the daughter of Harry and Annie (Harmon) Bennett. She graduated from Hamburg High School with the class of 1934. She then attended the Van Scant School of Business in Omaha, NE where she graduated in accounting.

Wanda served in the US Navy WAVES enlisting in 1943 and served in various locations including Hawaii - a place she dearly loved. She retired from the Navy after 23 years of service to her country. After her retirement, Wanda worked for the U.S. Post Office for 20 years as both a letter carrier and a clerk. She was a member of many organizations including the A.P.W. Union and the Navy WAVES Retirement Group. She loved thoroughbred horses and traveled to numerous cities to spend time with the horses.

Wanda is survived by nieces and nephews: Beverly Gardner and husband Mo of Hamburg, IA; Nancy Alfsen and husband Jim of Bolinas, CA; Carol Gillman and Jack Bennett both of Stinson Beach, CA and many great nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.

Wanda was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers: Paul, Gail and Jack.

Memorial services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 21, 2009 at the Rash-Gude Funeral Home in Hamburg, IA. Burial will follow in the Hamburg Cemetery in Hamburg, IA with complete military services conducted by the Hamburg American Legion Post.

No visitation or viewing is scheduled.

Memorials to the American Cancer Society, the Salvation Army or the Hamburg Fire and Rescue.

Virginia F. Hamilton

Virginia F. Hamilton, age 91 of Hamburg, IA passed away on Friday morning; April 10, 2009 at the Ambassador in Sidney, IA.

Virginia was born icon on January 7, 1918 in Hamburg, IA; the daughter of Albert and Myrtle (Lloyd) Garst. She attended school in Hamburg and graduated from the Hamburg High School with the class of 1935. She then attended business school in Omaha, NE.

She was united in marriage to Edwin Hamilton on October 16, 1949 in Hamburg, IA. He preceded her in death in 1983 after 34 years of marriage.

Virginia worked for many years at the former Interstate Nurseries in Hamburg in the office performing various clerical duties. She was a member of the Eastern Star.

She is survived by her dear friend and care giver Paul Bennett of Hamburg, IA; a sister-in-law Phyllis Million of Rock Port, MO; niece Patricia Bright of Omaha, NE; cousins, other family and many friends.

Graveside funeral services will be held Tuesday morning (Apr. 14) at 11:00 a.m. at the Hamburg Cemetery, Hamburg, IA with Rev. Blaine Pritchett officiating. Burial will follow the services.

The family will greet friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday at the Rash-Gude Funeral Home in Hamburg, IA.

Memorials may be given to the Colonial Theater in Hamburg, IA in her memory..

Bessie B. Eloge

Bessie B. Eloge, age 89 of Nebraska City passed away on April 8, 2009 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Nebraska City.

She was born icon on November 5, 1919 at Tilden, NE; the daughter of Joseph F. and Antoinette (Pimper) Srb. She was united in marriage to Art Eloge on February 9, 1950 in Fremont, NE. He preceded her in death on June 20, 2002.

Bessie worked for many years at the Woolworth’s Store in Nebraska City.

She is survived by sisters-in-law Ardel Eloge of Lincoln, NE and Pauline Srb of Omaha, NE; nieces and nephews including Kathy Compton and husband Keith of Syracuse, NE and Larry Shephard and wife Linda of Council Bluffs, IA; great- nieces and nephews: Jon Compton and wife Darcie, Kim Shephard and wife Karey, Larry Del Shephard, Nikki, Angie and Bobbi Jo Shephard; other family and friends.

In addition to her husband Art, she was preceded in death by a sister Helen Shephard, brothers Clarence and Ervin Srb, infant siblings Ernest, Charles and Anna Marie Srb and a half brother Paul Mills.

Funeral Services for Bessie Eloge will be held Monday (April 13) at 2:00 p.m. graveside at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Plattsmouth, NE with Fr. Mark Cyza of St. Mary‘s Catholic Church officiating; burial will follow the services.

The family will greet friends from 1:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Gude Mortuary in Nebraska City prior to leaving for the cemetery.
