Robert Lee Brehm
Robert Lee “Bob” Brehm, 70, died peacefully at his home in Scottsbluff, Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2005, after a courageous fight against cancer.
A funeral service will be held Monday, 10:30 a.m. at Zion Evangelical Church in Scottsbluff with Pastors Amos Harris and Doug Jones officiating. Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery with military rites by the Nebraska National Guard. In lieu of flowers, a memorial trust in his name has been established at Valley Bank in Scottsbluff to benefit the Prairie Haven Hospice and Zion Evangelical Church.

Bob was born Aug. 25, 1934, in Lincoln, the youngest of nine children, born to Eva “Best” Brehm-Fisher and Fredrich Brehm. Bob moved with his family to the Scottsbluff area in 1941.
Bob’s playful nature surfaced at an early age. Once, while his mother was working in the beet fields, his elder sister Marion, tied him to the clothes line to keep him from falling into the washtub.
Bob served his country for eight years during the Korean War as a Navy Seaman from 1951 to 1959. He served as part of the Pacific Fleet “CB’s” Construction Battalion building airstrips and Navy bases.
Upon returning to Scottsbluff, Bob married Donna Mae Green, Oct. 14, 1956. After the birth of their sons, they moved to California in 1962. He worked there as a truck driver for a grocery chain for twenty-nine years. Bob always missed the Scottsbluff area and in the mid 70’s, returned briefly with his family, for what they remember as their six month “vacation with their furniture”. Even though they spent another 20 years in California, Bob and Donna did finally return to their roots in Scottsbluff in 1995.
Both Bob and Donna have since been actively retired within the community. Bob served as Deacon at Zion Evangelical Church and as a Handi Bus driver. He loved people and enjoyed bringing a smile to all his riders. Bob will be remembered for his warm heart, wit and playfulness. Whether as a husband, father, grandfather, brother or friend, he will live on in the hearts of those who loved him.
Bob is survived by his wife, Donna; sons and daughters-in-law Gregory and Kimberly Brehm of Sacramento, Calif. and Daniel and Kathleen Brehm of Pollock Pines, Calif.; daughter and favorite son-in-law Michelle and Steve Bates of Tacoma, Wash.; five grandchildren Elizabeth and Erik Brehm of Pollock Pines, Calif., and Steven, Lauryn and Jacob Bates of Tacoma, Wash.; sisters-in-law Katherine Gerrie of Tonawanda, N.Y., Marian and her husband J.C. Worthington of Yorba Linda, Calif., and Betty Brown of Placentia, Calif.; brother Harvey Brehm of Bolivar, Mo.
Also surviving Bob are his brother-in-law Donald (Blacky) and his wife Norma Green; sister-in-law Esther and her husband Edgar Behling; sisters-in-law Helen Lambert of Dayton Ohio, Florence Green of Gering, Katherine Green of Scottsbluff and Esther Green of Scottsbluff.
Lillian M. Call
SIDNEY — Lillian M. Call, 81, a longtime Sidney resident, died Thursday evening January 20, 2005, at Memorial Health Center.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday afternoon, January 24 at the E-Free Church in Sidney with Pastor Doug Birkey officiating. Private burial services will be held at Greenwood Cemetery. The casket will be closed although friends may sign the register from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home. Memorials are to the family’s choice.
Owen Hess
Owen Hess, 91, of Scottsbluff, died Thursday, January 20, 2005, at The Residency in Scottsbluff. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m., Monday, January 24 at the First United Methodist Church in Scottsbluff with Charles Richardson officiating. A private family inurnment will be held at Sunset Memorial Park. Cremation has taken place at Sunset Memorial Park Crematory. A memorial has been established to the First United Methodist Church of Morrill, First United Methodist Church of Scottsbluff, or the Nebraska Alzheimer’s Association. Dugan-Kramer Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Owen was born on July 9, 1913, in Sioux County, Neb. to Harvey and Elizabeth (Albertson) Hess. He graduated from Morrill High School and married Carolyn Walker Hess August 16, 1936. Owen did custom grinding and thrashing in western Nebraska and eastern Wyoming and in 1947 purchased wheat farms in Goshen County, Wyo., which he operated until his retirement. Owen loved antique collecting, traveling, cards and helping others.
Owen was a member of the Morrill Methodist Church for many years where he served on the board before coming to Scottsbluff and joining the First United Methodist Church. He was also a member of the Oasis Lodge #271 AF & AM of Morrill where he received the Jordan Medal. He was a York Rite Mason and a member of the Tehamah Shrine of Hastings, a charter member of the Morrill Fire Department, a charter member of the Morrill Rotary Club, and a past member of the Morrill School Board, the Sunset Memorial Park Board and the Methodist Hospital Board.
Owen is survived by his wife: Carolyn; daughters and sons-in-law Lois and Ron Bartlett of Hiawassee, Ga., and Connie and Allen Meyer of Gering; grandchildren Sherry and Mark Duncan and Cathy and James Ingram all of Georgia, Kim and Myron Klein of Scottsbluff and Laurie and Ken Cosson of Loveland, Colo.; great-grandchildren Chris and Sean Duncan, Adam and Allie Ingram, Brandi Meier, and Meghan and Brett Klein.
His parents, five brothers and two sisters preceded him in death.
Albert Hoff
Albert Hoff, 76, of Gering, died Friday, January 21, 2005, at Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff. His funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, January 26 at Salem Congregational Church in Scottsbluff with Pastor Dale Brown officiating. Interment will be at Fairview Cemetery in Scottsbluff. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m. Tuesday at The Jolliffe Funeral Home in Scottsbluff. He was born June 10, 1928 in Bayard, Neb., the son of Conrad, Jr. and Mollie (Wise) Hoff. He attended school in Bayard and Carter Canyon. He farmed in the Gering Valley area all of his life. He was baptized and confirmed at Salem Congregational Church. He was united in marriage to Norma Jean Fulk on March 28, 1955, at Scottsbluff. To this union, five children were born.
He is survived by his wife Norma Jean Hoff of Gering; children Michael Hoff and Norman Hoff both of Gering, Sandra (Ron) Dean and family of Bayard, Connie (Merle) Hagen and family of Scottsbluff, and Cindy (Jeff) Rogers of Lincoln; grandchildren Megan and Christian Rogers of Lincoln; sisters Wilma (Robert) Lunniss of Gering, Dorothy Stuckert of Gering, Eleanor Dean of Scottsbluff, Shirley (Deitmar) Botzki of Gering, and Alvina (Donald) Detweiler of Scottsbluff; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, infant twin brothers, brother Conrad Hoff III, nephew Gary Detweiler, niece Sherry Detweiler, and brother-in-law Donald Stuckert.
Grace Johnson
HAY SPRINGS — Grace Johnson, 95, of Hay Springs, Neb., passed away January 20, 2005, at Pioneer Manor.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m., Tuesday, January 25, 2005, at the United Methodist Church of Hay Springs with Rev. Al Trucano officiating. Interment will be held at the Hay Springs Cemetery.
Surviving relatives include three daughters: Rosann Leis of Eatonville, Wash., Carolyn Goldschmidt (Marty) of Gig Harbor, Wash. and Janet Frimann (Lonnie) of Bayard, Neb.

Garold K. Mauler
Garold K. Mauler, 82, of Mesa, Ariz. died on Jan. 19, 2005. Services are not being held at the present time.
He was born June 6, 1922, to Florian (Pat) and Hazel Mauler of Taylor.
He lived in Sargent until 1938, and then moved to Scottsbluff where he received his education. He was employed at Cook Packing Co. and Swift & Co. in Scottsbluff until the plant closed in 1977. He served in the U. S. Army in World War II in Germany, France and Austria, receiving an honorable discharge in 1946.
He is a lifetime member of the VFW.
He married Marjorie Nelson on May 17, 1947, in Scottsbluff.
After retirement, they moved to Mesa, Ariz. and resided there until his death.
Survivors include his wife, Marjorie; one brother, Dick Mauler of Peoria, Ariz.; one niece, Debra Bohl; one great-niece, Megan Bohl; one great-nephew, Cody Bohl; and one great-great-nephew, Hunter Bohl, all of Gering.
His parents and one brother preceded him in death.
Donna Lee Richard
Donna Lee Richard, 67, of Scottsbluff, Neb., passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 22, 2005, at Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, January 25, 2005, at Zion Evangelical Church in Scottsbluff with Pastors Doug Jones and Amos Harris officiating. Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery. Donna was born to Edward and Dorothy (Zwink) McNeff on February 17, 1937, in Hastings, Neb. Donna grew up in Hastings and attended school in Hastings, graduating with the class of 1955 from Hastings High School.
Donna met and married Marvin H. Richard in Hastings, Neb., and from this union three children were born, Douglas Lee, Debra Jo and Marvin Allan. They lived in Hastings for a short time before moving to Scottsbluff where she had made her home ever since. During her children’s early years, Donna was active in the Bryant PTA, she was also a room mother, a Blue Bird leader and was the pitcher for all of the neighborhood baseball games in the family’s backyard. When the marriage ended in a divorce, Donna completed her nurse’s aide training and worked in that field for a number of years. Donna later worked at Holland Bakery and Safeway Stores, Inc. Donna worked for Safeway from December 1985 until September 2000, when ill health forced her early retirement.
Donna was a very loving and giving person and would do anything for anyone. She loved her family very much and was very proud of her children and grandchildren. She had a deep love for animals, she also enjoyed flowers, reading, shopping, traveling, dining out and collecting dolls. Donna enjoyed the time she spent with her friends and as her illness progressed, she looked forward to those telephone calls and visits. Donna made a number of close friends at work and she treasured those friendships deeply. Even though she had been ill for a number of years, she was always upbeat and had a positive attitude about life. Donna missed being able to attend church, but cherished the home visits from Pastor D and Pastor Harris and looked forward to the weekly recorded sermons.
Donna is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Doug and Cheryl Richard of Nampa, Idaho; daughter and son-in-law Deb and Len Burns of Gering, Neb.; son and caregiver Marv Richard of Scottsbluff, Neb.; grandchildren Lee Francisco of Ft. Collins, Colo., Sarah Francisco, Scottsbluff, Neb., Ashley Richard and fiancé Shawn Harper of Dalhart, Texas, Aryonna and Nathan Richard of Nampa, Idaho; brother William “Bill” McNeff of Tacoma, Wash.; sister Bonnie Pfitzer of Fresno, Calif.; sister and brother-in-law Yvonne and Ralph Kiko of Louisville, Ohio; special nephew and niece-in-law Randy and Terri Kiko of Louisville, Ohio; and special niece Nichole Kiko of Canton, Ohio; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
Donna was preceded in death by her parents, brother Donald McNeff (MIA, WWII), sister Maxine Resnais, niece Terri Kay Pfitzer, nephew Dick Allen Pfitzer, great-nephew Ryan Kiko and her canine companion of 17 years Boomer.
Arnold J. “Tim” Daly
ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Former Wyoming resident, Arnold J. “Tim” Daly, 89, a lieutenant colonel in the Air Force and an aircraft consultant, died Jan. 18 in Alexandria, Va. Burial will be on Monday, Feb. 14, 2005, following a funeral mass. Memorials may be made to the charity of your choice or sent to Demaine Funeral Home, 5308 Backlick Road, Springfield, Va., 22151.
Col. Daly was born in Casper, Wyo., on May 11, 1915. In his early years he worked with his father in the livestock business. He liked to recall trailing sheep into the Big Horn Mountains and eating out of the back of a chuck wagon. After graduation from Natrona County High School in 1932, he also worked for Safeway food stores in Casper, working his way up from clerk to manager. However, his love of flying began at an early age, and he took his first flying lesson at age 14. He was inducted into the Army Air Corps, at F. E. Warren Air Force Base in Cheyenne, Wyo. in 1942, and rose from the rank of private to lieutenant colonel.
During World War II, he served in the South Pacific with 433rd Troop Carrier Group, the largest in the world. During his military career as a pilot, he accumulated well over 10,000 hours of flying time in aircraft including transport planes, bombers and fighter jets. Among his military awards were the Distinguished Flying Cross with two oak leaf clusters, the Air Medal with four oak leaf clusters, and many other commendations for meritorious service throughout his career.
He flew as a pilot with Special Air Missions (SAM) out of Bolling Field in Washington, D.C., flying Congressmen, high ranking military and civilian members of the government, and White House staff. His assignment to the Alaskan Air Command included flying transport, under extreme conditions, into the famous Ice Island observation post in the Artic. In the 1960s, he was deputy base commander and base commander at Bitburg Air Force Base, Germany, the largest fighter base in Europe. He also held Top Secret and Crypto clearance, and was asked by Chuck Yeager to fly as a test pilot, a job he turned down because of his young family. His last command before retirement in 1966 was in Amarillo, Texas.
Col. Daly then became a market research executive for Page Avjet, which sold and serviced planes. In the 1980s, he formed his own company and became an independent aircraft consultant.
He attended the University of Maryland, George Washington University and a number of military schools including the Air Command and Staff College. A widely read man, Col. Daly was a contributing member of numerous organizations, both religious and secular, in particular, those working towards the alleviation of poverty and the promotion of understanding and peace for all peoples in the world. He was also a member of Queen of Apostles Catholic Church, the Franconia Orators Toastmasters Club and the Mount Vernon chapter of the Retired Officers Association.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Dorothy R. Daly of Alexandria; a son, Lawrence C. Daly of Alexandria; a daughter and son-in-law, David and Pat Daly Laucomer of Sioux County, Neb.; two grandchildren, Chris Laucomer and Carlye Laucomer Johnson and their spouses, Cary and Chad, all of Sioux County; two great-grandchildren, Quincey Johnson and Brady Laucomer; Mary Lou and Paul Rechard of Laramie; Nancy Grieve Baker of Casper; many nieces and nephews and a cadre of friends whose devotion and concern have been earned over a long lifetime.
A son, William Lance Daly, preceded him in death in 1971. Col. Daly will be buried with him at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors.
Kenneth Lee Shelley
Kenneth Lee Shelley, 72, of Gering, died Friday, Feb. 4, 2005 at Heritage Healthcare Center in Gering. Cremation has taken place at The Jolliffe Funeral Home Crematory in Scottsbluff and a memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2005 at The Jolliffe Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Ron Nuss-Warren officiating. Kenneth was born Dec. 2, 1933 at Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. He moved with his parents, Bill and Leona Whittaker to Maryville, Tenn. where he received his education. Kenneth moved to California where he worked as a mechanic and later drove truck. Most recently, Kenneth owned and operated K & M Auto in Blythe, Calif. He moved to the Scottsbluff/Gering area to be near his family in 2003.
He enjoyed fishing, loved animals, and was a great mechanic.
He is survived by his daughter Kandy Onstad of Scottsbluff; grandchildren Crystal K. Trout, Sara Moss and her husband Wolfe, and Summer Onstad all of Scottsbluff, Jennifer Evans of Yakima, Wash., and Nicole Evans of the Los Angeles, Calif. area; four great-grandchildren; sister Mildred Hilton and her husband Avery of Maryville, Tenn.; half-sisters Claudette Hudson of Tempe, Ariz. and Barbara Jean Baker of Modesto, Calif.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, son Donald Leon Evans, infant sister Yvonne Shelley, and a brother Cecil Shelley.
Lena Etta Mellish Stovall
TORRINGTON, Wyo. — Funeral services for Lena Etta Mellish Stovall, 91, will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2005 at the Lighthouse Ministries Church with Pastor Rick Carroll officiating. Burial will follow at Valley View Cemetery.
Mrs. Stovall died on Feb. 5, 2005 at Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff. Visitation hours at Colyer Funeral Home will be Monday from noon to 5 p.m.; Tuesday from 9 a.m. to noon. The casket will be open at the service.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the family. Arrangements are under the direction of Colyer Funeral Home.
Lucille E. Zwiebel
MORRILL — Lucille E. Zwiebel, 81 of Morrill, died Friday, Feb. 4, 2005 at her home. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2005, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Morrill with Pastor Barry Warpness officiating. Cremation will follow the service at Sunset Memorial Park Crematory in Scottsbluff. A private family inurnment will be held at a later date. Memorials may be given to Trinity Lutheran Church or to the donor’s choice.

SIDNEY — Katie Elisabeth Christiansen Anderson, 85, a longtime Sidney resident, died at her home in Sidney Wednesday evening, Feb. 9, 2005. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday morning, Feb. 12, at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Sidney with Pastor Edgar Schambach officiating. Graveside services and interment will be held at 10 a.m., CST Monday morning, Feb. 14, at the Ord Cemetery in Ord, Neb. She will be laid to rest beside her husband. Friends may call at the Gehrig Funeral Home from noon to 8 p.m., on Friday. The family has designated MHC Hospice as the memorial.
