Gene Swearengin

Gene Swearengin, age 71 of Nebr. City, NE passed away very suddenly on Friday; August 14, 2009 at BryanLGH East Medical Center in Lincoln, NE.

Raymond E. Swearengin was born icon on February 16, 1938 in Delaware, OH; the son of Charles David and Carrie Evelyn (Stultz) Swearengin.

He was united in marriage to Jayne Eloge on July 15, 2002 in Nebraska City, NE.

Gene worked most recently at Wyuka Cemetery in Nebraska City and for many years drove truck for Spring Air Mattress Company. He was a member of the Jehovah’s Witnesses.

He is survived by his wife Jayne Swearengin of Nebr. City, NE; children; Jesi Swearengin and wife Jeni of Nebr. City; Thaddaeus “Jody” Swearengin and wife Amanda of Robinson, TX; Stoney Swearengin and wife Samantha of Nebr. City, NE; daughters: Cinnamon Swearingen of Robinson, TX and Sparkel Swearengin of Lincoln, NE; step-children: Michael Henner and wife Amy of Omaha, NE; Michelle Henner of Nebr. City; Matthew Henner and wife Rayla of Nebr. City; his mother Carrie Swearengin of Nebr. City; 12 grandchildren; a brother Richard Swearengin and wife Dorothy of Faribault, MN; other family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father in 1981.

Memorials services for Gene Swearengin will be held Wednesday evening (Aug. 19) at 6:30 p.m. at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witnesses in Nebraska City, NE. Burial will be held at a later date.

Neva (Calkins) Hatten Hageman

Neva (Calkins) Hatten Hageman was born icon on April 4, 1923 to parents George and Ruth (Kempf) Calkins, at home on the family farm, Northwest of McCook, NE, in Hayes County. She passed away on August 12, 2009 at The Ambassador in Nebr. City, NE, coincidently, 30 years to the day after her husband Clyde passed away.

Neva attended elementary school in a one-room school house, near the farm, and went to high school in Wilsonville, NE. After graduation, she enrolled in Beauty School in Beatrice, NE. Following the completion of the required course there, she came to Nebraska City to work for Myrtle Taylor in her Beauty Shop, where she remained until after the start of World War II when she went to work at Martin Bomber Plant in the Education Dept. In 1944, she left the Defense Plant to marry Clyde Hatten and went with him in the Air Force for their first year together. After the war they came back to Nebraska City where they stayed to raise their family of four sons and establish Hatten Construction Co. Clyde passed away suddenly with a heart attack in 1979.

With the help of her son, Roger, Neva managed Hatten Apartments for a few years and in 1986 she was remarried to Warren (Bud) Hageman. They enjoyed their retirement years together and traveled a lot. They also loved their Arizona home and friends where they spent the winter months. Following a few months of illness, Bud passed away in 2003.

Neva was a long-time member of First United Methodist Church, a Charter member of Opti-Mrs, member of P.E.O. Chapter FV, a Cub Scout Den Mother, a lifetime member of P.T.A., a Red Cross Volunteer at St. Mary’s Hospital and was an active participant in the Women’s Golf Assoc. -- both in Nebr. City and Tucson.

Those left to cherish Neva’s memory include sons Michael Hatten and wife Sharon of West Des Moines, IA and Gregg Hatten and wife Karen of Bonita Springs, FL; daughter-in-law Loretta Hatten of Ida Grove, IA; step-daughters Debra Concannon and husband Terry of Shawnee, KS and Sharon Reddy and husband Paul of Albuquerque, NM; 6 grandchildren: Jeff Hatten and wife Melody of Colorado Springs, CO; Amy Becker and husband Jess of Denver, CO; Susan Hatten, Jenny Hatten, Benjamin Hatten and Cooper Hatten all of West Des Moines, IA; 4 great-grandchildren: Spencer Hatten, Tanner Hatten, Aden Becker and Owen Becker; several nieces and nephews and sister-in-law Margaret Brawner and husband Jack of Nebr. City, NE; other family and many friends.

Neva was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, one brother, two sons Roger and Douglas, as well as both husbands.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 15, 2009 at the First United Methodist Church in Nebraska City, NE with Rev. Jeff Kelley officiating; burial will follow at Wyuka Cemetery in Nebr. City, NE.

The family will greet friends on Saturday morning at the church from 9:30 a.m. until the service at 10:00 a.m.

Visitation is open from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday at Gude Mortuary.

Memorials may be given to the First United Methodist Church, Am. Cancer Society or Nebr. City Vol. Fire Dept.

Harry B. Straw III

age 58 of Nebraska City, NE passed away on Tuesday, August 11, 2009 at his home.

Harry was born icon on January 5, 1951 in Nebr. City, NE; the son of Harry B. and Mary (Williamson) Straw, Jr. He attended school and graduated from high school, and later attented trucking school.

He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War entering service on October 6, 1972. He was honorably discharged on February 27, 1976.

Harry was united in marriage to Wanda Jean Wichman on January 12, 1982 in Council Bluffs, IA. He was a truck driver was various companies including Viking Ship Trucking Co., Mares Trucking, Nationwide Trucking, F.C.C., N & W Trucking and D&D Trucking.

He is survived by his wife Wanda Straw of Nebr. City, NE; four children Randy Bolton and wife Laura of Nebr. City, NE; Michael Straw of Beaumont, TX; Greg Bolton and wife Shannon of Nebr. City, NE and Tanya Bolton of Nebr. City, NE; seven grandchildren; his mother Mary Hutt of Green Bay, IA; siblings Michael Straw of Oskaloosa, IA; Henry Straw of West Plains, MO; April Sterling of Sioux Falls, SD; Debbie Brown of Bellevue, NE; Fred Straw of Sioux Falls, SD Tony Hutt of Omaha, NE; Ron Hutt of Ohiowa, NE and Mildred Hutt of Green Bay, WI; other family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Harry Straw, Jr.; brothers Bryce Hutt and Stephen Straw and his grandparents.

Memorial services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 15, 2009 at Gude Mortuary in Nebr. City with Pastor Rob Connor of Cornerstone Church in Nebr. City officiating.

Graveside inurnment services will held on Monday, August 17, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at Wyuka Cemetery in Nebr. City, NE with complete military services conducted by the Nebr. Army National Guard Funeral Honors Detail.

Dale Lee Culbertson

Dale Lee Culbertson, age 72 of Riverton, IA passed away on Monday morning; August 10, 2009 at the VA Medical Center in Omaha, NE.

He was born icon on October 30, 1936 at Deepwater, MO; the son of Fred Lynn and Oris Glenna (Miller) Culbertson. He was united in marriage to Mary K. Greenwood on September 28, 1964 at Shenandoah, IA.

Prior to his marriage, he served in the US Air Force. He entered service on March 14, 1955 and was honorably discharged on December 11, 1959.

Dale worked at the former Morton House Kitchens in Nebraska City for some 15 years. He also worked at the Farragut and Riverton Elevators.

He is survived by his wife of Mary Culbertson of Riverton, IA; children: Cheryl Kimpston and husband Jim of Riverton; Roger Guilford and wife Debbie of Farragut, IA; Linda Culbertson of Riverton; Fred Culbertson of Riverton; Sandy Parmenter and husband Jeff of Riverton and Michael Culbertson of Riverton; 12 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; three brothers: Kenneth Culbertson and wife Joyce of Shenandoah, IA; Wayne Culbertson of Shenandoah, IA and Max Culbertson of Nemaha, NE; other family and friends.

Memorial services will be held Saturday morning (Aug. 15) at 11:00 a.m. at the Church of Christ in Riverton, IA with Pastor Clarence Schaffner officiating. Inurnment will be in the Riverton Cemetery, Riverton, IA with complete military honors.

The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until service time on Saturday at the church.

Marcella M. Owings

Marcella M. Owings, age 91 of Sidney, IA (formerly Nebr. City) passed away on Tuesday, August 4, 2009 at The Ambassador in Sidney, IA.

Marcella was born icon on April 16, 1918 in Nebr. City, NE; the daughter of Morris T. and Jessie E. (Tucker) Sharp. Marcella attended school in the Nebr. City area. She was united in marriage to Herman Rietsch and to this union a daughter Carol was born. Herman preceded her in death and Marcella was then united in marriage to Arted“Buzz” Owings on February 5, 1945 in Nebr. City, NE and to this union two children were born: Richard and Cheryl.

Marcella was a loving wife and mother. She worked at Appleman’s Sewing and Nebr. City Outerwear as a seamstress for many years. She was a member of the Community of Christ Church and the VFW Auxiliary.

Those left to cherish Marcella’s memory include two children: Richard Owings of Avoca, NE and Cheryl Messenger and husband Randy of Shenandoah, IA; 9 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild; sister Jean Collins of Portland, OR and other family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Arted on July 28, 1994; daughter Carol Rietsch on June 4, 1995 and seven brothers and sisters.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, August 7, 2009 at Gude Mortuary in Nebr. City, NE with Pastor Tom Sherer of the Community of Christ Church officiating; burial will follow at Wyuka Cemetery in Nebr. City.

The family will greet friends from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday evening ( 8/6) at the Gude Mortuary.

Memorials are suggested to the family.

Doris M. Brown

Doris M. Brown, age 89 of rural Riverton, IA passed away on Tuesday, July 28, 2009 at The Ambassador in Sidney, IA.

Doris Marilyn Brown was born icon on April 22, 1920 near Watson, MO; the daughter of Oscar L. and Ruth (Adams) Moore, Sr. She graduated from Underwood High School in Underwood, IA. She was united in marriage to Elbert N. Brown on February 20, 1940 at High Creek Baptist Church in rural Watson, MO and to this union a son Rick was born.

Doris was a devoted wife and mother. She also worked as a nurses aid at Grape Community Hospital in Hamburg, IA for several years.. She was a member of the Riverton United Methodist Church and enjoyed square dancing and riding horses.

Doris is survived by her son Rick Brown and wife Pam of Jefferson City, MO; sister Deana Boettner and husband J.H. and brother Oscar Moore, Jr. and wife Margaret all of Rock Port, MO; other family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Elbert in January of 2001; sister Helen Beasing and 3 brothers: Byron, Don and Ralph.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, July 31, 2009 at the Riverton United Methodist Church in Riverton, IA with Rev. Jaye Johnson officiating; burial will follow the services at Utterback Cemetery of rural Riverton.

There will be open visitation on Thursday, July 30, 2009 at the Shull-Gude Funeral Home in Riverton, IA from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m..

Memorials may be given to Riverton United Methodist Church or Grape Community Hospital Extended Care.

Lois Marie Hamilton

Lois Marie Hamilton was born icon on January 17, 1956 in Nebraska City, NE to Kenneth G. and Mary E. (Hall) Cole. She graduated from Nebraska City High School in 1974.

Lois worked at the former Jade, Pendletons and the Embers. Most recently she worked at Lil Dickies Restaurant.

She is survived by her children: Jason Hamilton and Jennifer Hamilton, both of Council Bluffs, IA; 6 grandchildren; parents Ken and Mary Cole of Nebraska City, NE; brother Thomas Cole of Lincoln, NE; sister Diana Bohlen and husband Michael of Percival, IA; other family and friends.

Graveside memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 29, 2009 at Wyuka Cemetery with Rev. John Duling officiating.

Lois Marie Hamilton entered eternal peace on December 18, 2008 at her home in Nebr. City, NE.

John J. Hodges

Age 81 of Julian, NE passed away early Thursday morning, July 23, 2009 at Bryan LGH West Medical Center in Lincoln, NE.

John James Hodges was born icon on October 8, 1928 in Nebraska City, NE; the son of Walter T. and Lily V. (Wilberger) Hodges. He attended school and graduated from the Julian High School with the class of 1946. He was united in marriage to Joan E. Lovelady on June 6, 1948 at the Methodist Church in Julian, NE and to this union four children were born: Daniel, Patrick, Randall and Diane.

John served the Nemaha Methodist Church, Bethel Community Church near Auburn, NE, the Table Rock, Elk Creek, Johnson and Brock Methodist Churches. In all, he served the people of these communities for some 30 years.

He worked at Allied Chemical from 1956 until his retirement in 1982 and also worked as an Auctioneer at Bernard Realty in Auburn for 25 years. He was very active in the community and the county and served as a Board Member for the Blue Rivers Agency on Aging and Region V. He was a member of the Julian Volunteer Fire Dept. and served on the Village Board and School Boardl. He served at Otoe County Commissioner for eight years.

He is survived by his wife Joan of Julian, NE; four children Daniel T. Hodges and wife Sue of Julian, NE; Patrick J. Hodges and wife Gail of Julian, NE; Randall K. Hodges and wife Ruth of North Branch, MI and Diane L. Stalcup and husband Jim of Marietta, GA; nine grandchildren: Brian Hodges and wife Aubry; Shane Hodges; Michael Hodges and wife Christy; Timothy Hodges and wife Jen; John Hodges and wife Katey; Amy Hodges and friend Chris Casey; Emily Anthony and husband Blane; Mary Head and husband David and Ben Hodges; 9 great-grandchildren: Elizabeth, Abigail, Andrew, Liam, Ainsley; Gretchen, Mitchell, Ciara and Justin; many other family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his grandson Justin, a brother Glen Hodges and his sister Della LaVigne, half-sister Creola Edwards as well as his parents.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, July 27, 2009 at the Julian Methodist Church in Julian, NE with Pastors John and Ruth Henderson and Val Jean Warman officiating; burial will follow at Camp Creek Cemetery south of Nebr. City, NE.

The family will greet friends from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday (7/26) at Gude Mortuary in Nebr. City, NE.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the family’s choice.

Phyllis M. Densberger

Phyllis M. Densberger, age 73 of Nebr. City, NE passed away on Tuesday, July 21, 2009 at her home in Nebraska City.

Phyllis was born icon on October 9, 1935 in Lincoln, NE; the daughter of George and Janice (Stoner) Kempkes. She graduated from Malcolm High School in Malcolm, NE. She was united in marriage to Marvin E. Densberger on July 17, 1954 at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Lincoln, NE. They were blessed with four sons: Ralph, Rocky, Tony and David.

Phyllis was a devoted wife and mother. She enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her children: Ralph L. Densberger and his wife Cathy of Nebr. City, NE; Rocky A. Densberger and his wife Vicki of Talmage, NE; Tony M. Densberger of Nebr. City, NE and David B. Densberger of Geneva, NE; 8 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren; other family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Marvin on June 23, 2006.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, July 27, 2009 at the Church of Christ in Nebr. City, NE with the Pastors Glen Redmond, Terry Duffy and Larry Chapin officiating. There will be no viewing or visitation; however friends may stop by the mortuary at any time to sign the Memorial Book.

Memorials may be given to the Church of Christ in Nebr. City, NE.
