Glendyn Max “Glen” Staack

Glendyn Max “Glen” Staack, age 91 of Nebraska City, NE passed away on Monday, July 20, 2009 at the Ambassador in Nebraska City.

Glen was born icon on April 14, 1918 near Syracuse, NE; the son of Frank and Winifred (Marquis) Staack. He graduated from National Institute, Washington, DC in March of 1941 and started work as an assistant Radio Mechanic with Civil Service in April 1942. Through Civil Service, he attended the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago and from there went to the Philco Training School in radar at Philadelphia, PA. Glen then went on to the Aircraft Radio Laboratory in Dayton, OH for training in aircraft radio equipment. He was assigned to McClellan Field at Sacramento, CA in the radar field and later received advanced schooling at Bell Telephone Laboratory in New York City. From there he went to Warner Robins Air Depot at Macon, GA and back to California to work in radar on Aircraft.

After the ending of World War II, Glen went back to Otoe, NE and opened a radio sales and service business in October of 1946. He began selling Black and White televisions in 1949. In February of 1959, he sold the first Color Television and during his working years, he sold and serviced over six thousand televisions in the area.

He was united in marriage to Jane Swan Paasch at United Methodist Church in Union, NE on March 7, 1977. She preceded him in death on July 8, 2002.

He is survived by two step-daughters: Lynn Lemmer and Ellen Winkleman and husband Charles both of Colorado; four step grandchildren and several step great-grandchildren; sister Wilma Niedermeyer and husband Harvey of Cook, NE; brother John Staack and wife Mary of Syracuse, NE and sister Etta McCammon and husband James of Monrovia, CA; sister-in-law Betty Easter; special friend Dottie Easter and family and many nieces, nephews and other family.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Jane; sister Eunice Edwards and his parents.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 23, 2009 at First United Methodist Church in Nebr. City with the Rev. Jeff Kelley officiating; burial will follow in Wyuka Cemetery in Nebr. City.

The family will greet friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at the mortuary.

Memorials are suggested to the First United Methodist Church in Nebraska City and it's Sunday School Program.

Ricky M. Van

Ricky M. Van, age 57 of rural Watson, MO passed away near his home on July 13, 2009.

He was born icon on Nov. 15, 1951 at Hamburg, IA; the son of John William and Florence Easter (Davidson) Van. He was united in marriage to Wendy Diane Miller on April 20, 2000 at Sidney, IA.

Ricky served in the U.S. Navy and was honorably discharged on March 27, 1970. He worked for Tom Proudfoot Farms for several years, worked in construction and also operated a concrete business.

He is survived by his wife Wendy of rural Watson, MO; four sons: Duane, Rusty, Ricky and Robbie Van; brothers: Charles Van and wife Arlinda of Clarinda, IA and Tom Van and wife Becki of San Antonio, TX; other family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Memorial services for Ricky will be held at a later time.

Memorials may be directed to the family.

Kenneth L. “Kenny” Hemmer, Sr.

Age 82 of Nebraska City passed away at his home on Saturday; July 11, 2009.

He was born icon on January 31, 1927 at Nebraska City, NE; the son of Edward and Carrie (Dahlke) Hemmer. He attended school in Nebraska City and graduated from the Nebraska City High School with the class of 1945. He was united in marriage to Marilyn D. Voges on May 24, 1945 in Nebraska City and to this union four children were born. Kenny served in the US Army during World War II. He served overseas; primarily in Italy. He worked for some 35 years at the former Nebraska City Grocery and later at Dinty Moores in Nebraska City. He always enjoyed visiting and socializing with the customer.

He was a member of the Eagles Aerie #968 and the American Legion Post #8 both in Nebraska City, NE.

He is survived by his three children: Gayle O’Connell and husband James of San Diego, CA; Kevin Hemmer and wife Loretta of Lewisville, TX and Edwynna “Edie” Petersen and husband Kevin of Lincoln, NE; daughter in law Debra Hemmer of Lafayette, LA; 10 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren; other family and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife Marilyn on June 25, 2004, his son Kenneth Hemmer, Jr. on January 2, 2002, a grandson Jason Chrisman and 11 brothers and sisters.

Funeral Services for Kenny Hemmer will be held Thursday morning at 11:00 at the Gude Mortuary in Nebraska City; burial will be in St. Benedict’s Cemetery at Nebraska City. Military services will be conducted by the Nebraska Army National Guard Funeral Honors Detail.

The family will greet friends from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Gude Mortuary in Nebr. City.

Memorials may be given to the American Lung Association.

Melvin L. Kopf

Melvin L. Kopf, age 84 of Nebraska City, NE passed away on Wednesday, July 8, 2009 at the Golden Living Center in Nebr. City.

Melvin was born icon on August 1, 1924 in Nebraska City, NE; the son of Henry and Hazel (Kinnison) Kopf. Melvin attended Nebraska City High School and graduated with the class of 1943. After high school Melvin joined the United States Navy. He served as a Navy Seabee in WWII from June 9, 1943 to March 5, 1946 in the Marianas Islands.

Melvin was united in marriage to Rita Gress on June 28, 1948. He was a Police Officer for the Nebraska City Police Department from October 8, 1956 until his retirement on July 31, 1989. He was a member of St. Benedict’s Catholic Church, the American Legion Post #8 and the Police Officers’ Assoc. of Nebraska.

Melvin is survived by his wife of 61 years, Rita Kopf of Nebr. City, NE; 2 sons: Roger Kopf and wife Paula and Dale Kopf all of Nebr. City, NE; uncle Lester Kinnison and wife Jan of Nebr. City, NE; granddaughter Brandi Ragsdale and great-granddaughter Jaycee Ragsdale of Fort Carson, CO and several nieces and nephews and friends.

Melvin was preceded in death by his parents and a sister Betty Whitehead.

A Memorial Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, July 14, 2009 at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Nebr. City, NE with Fr. Jeremy Hazuka as celebrant; inurnment will follow at St. Benedict’s Cemetery in Nebr. City, NE with complete Military Services conducted by the US Navy Funeral Honors Detail.

There will be visitation on Friday (7/10) from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and on Saturday (7/11) from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Gude Mortuary.

Memorials may be given to the John Wayne Cancer Institute for Leukemia or the American Diabetes Assn.

Andrew E. Kreifels

Andrew E. Kreifels, age 85 of Nebraska City, NE passed away on Wednesday, December 30, 2009 at Creighton Hospital in Omaha, NE.

Andy was born icon on October 3, 1924 in Syracuse, NE; the son of Eugene and Rosalia (Ramold) Kreifels. He graduated from Nebraska City High School with the class of 1942. Andy then served his country during World War II in the United States Navy. He was honorably discharged on July 3, 1946. Andrew was united in marriage to his beloved Margaret M. Stehno on October 23, 1950 at St. Adalbert's Catholic Church in Omaha, NE. The couple was later blessed with 7 children: Joan, Jean, Dennis, Judy, Douglas, Jane and Victoria.

Andrew owned and operated Kreifels Poultry Farm from 1946 to 1960. He then owned and operated City Wholesale Meat with his brother from 1960 until his retirement. He was a member of St. Benedict's Catholic Church, the American Legion Post #8, 40 & 8, the Knights of Columbus, former member of the Elks and a lifetime member of the Eagles. He was an avid gardener and especially loved flower gardening. He also enjoyed Word Jumble Puzzles in his newspaper every morning and Nebraska Football, but his greatest love was his family and the Catholic Church. He continued to attend Mass daily until only three weeks ago when his health failed.

Those left to cherish his memory include his children: Joan M. Comiskey and husband Robert of Hickman, NE; Jean A. Detloff and husband Herb of Bellevue, NE; Dennis A. Kreifels and wife Barb of LaVista, NE; Judy M. Lemrick and husband Paul of Bellevue, NE; Douglas J. Kreifels and wife Frances of Nebraska City, NE; Jane E. Hartwell and husband Mark of McClelland, IA; and Vicky L. Kreifels of Lincoln, NE; 18 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; siblings: Allen Kreifels and wife Delores of Springfield, NE, Barbara McCarthy of Norfolk, NE; Mary Jean LeCure and husband Clement of Eire, PA, Floyd "Buck" Kreifels and wife Garnet of Nebr. City; other family and many friends. He was preceded in death by his wife Margaret on January 25, 2007, a brother Orville Kreifels and his parents.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, January 4, 2010 at St. Benedict's Catholic Church in Nebr. City, NE with Fr. Jeremy Hazuka officiating. Burial will follow the service at St. Benedict's Cemetery with full military honors by the US Navy Funeral Honors Detail.

Visitation for the public is open after 4:00 p.m. Sunday.

There will be a Parish and Knights of Columbus Rosary held on Sunday evening at 7:00 p.m. at the mortuary followed by the family greeting friends. Memorials may be given to St. Benedict's Cemetery Fund.

Belva E. Barton

Belva E. Barton, age 77 of Nebraska City passed away on December 29, 2009 at Golden Living Center in Nebraska City, NE.

She was born icon on September 8, 1932 at Nebraska City, NE; the daughter of Ocie and Dorothy (Reeves) Mullenax. She was united in marriage to Bobbie Joe Barton on May 4, 1947 at Nebraska City, NE and to this union seven children were born: Susan, Robert, James, Dale, Tom, Joe and Steven. The couple shared over 61 years of marriage together before Bob's death on October 19, 2008.

Belva worked for many years at Ocoma Foods and Morton House Kitchens. She also helped her husband at Nebr. City Fish Market which they owned and operated. Belva was an avid Nebraska Football Fan and loved to play BINGO.

She is survived by her children: Susan Shallenberger, Robert Barton and wife Carol, Jim Barton and wife Nancy and Steven "Buck" Barton and wife Tiffany all of Nebr. City, NE; Tom Barton of Oklahoma City, OK, Dale Barton of Lincoln, NE and Joe Barton and wife Mary of Lincoln, NE; 17 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren; brothers: Bob Mullenax of Nebr. City; Melvin Mullenax and wife Ramona of Oskaloosa, IA and Chris Mullenax and wife Bonnie of Michigan and other family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband Bob, a grandson Chad in infancy, 2 brothers Ed Mullenax and Clifford, sister Doshie and her parents.

The family will greet friends from 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Monday, January 4, 2010 with a Memorial Service to follow at 3:30 p.m. at Gude Mortuary.

Memorials may be given to Otoe County Veteran's Van Fund.

Betty J. Lynn

Betty J. Lynn, age 85 of Nebraska City, NE passed away on December 24, 2009 at Duff's Friendship Villa in Nebr. City.

Betty June Lucas (Harshbarger) Lynn, loving daughter of Norman and Elsie (Krecklow) Lucas was born icon on June 16, 1924 in Falls City, NE. She attended high school in Falls City and graduated with the class of 1942. She married Edward (Ed) Harshbarger on October 12, 1945 and to this union one daughter, Cheryl, was born. She later married Robert Lynn on July 18, 1969.

She lived in the Nebraska City area most of her adult life, working for the Nebraska City NewsPress and the ASCS Office in Syracuse, NE. She attended the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Nebr. City. Betty enjoyed reading, dancing and participating in the Nebraska City Saddle Club events.

Betty is survived by her brother-in-law: Virgil Lynn and wife Virginia of Hamburg, IA; 2 aunts: Lois Lynn of Hamburg, IA and Mildred Bolton of West Plains, MO; many nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

She was preceded in death by her first husband Ed Harshbarger, beloved husband Robert Lynn, her parents, her daughter, Cheryl Arthur and grandson Chuck Arthur.

There will be Graveside Services held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, December 30, 2009 at Wyuka Cemetery in Nebr. City, NE; burial will follow the services.

Memorials may be given to Duff's Friendship Villa in Nebr. City, NE.

Bernard Gress

Bernard Gress, age 84 of Nebraska City passed away on Wednesday evening; Dec. 23, 2009 at the Ambassador in Nebraska City.

Bernard was born icon on July 21, 1925 at Nebraska City, NE; the son of Michael A. and Helen W. (Zeiner) Gress. He attended country school at District 37 and then attended St. Bernard's Academy in Nebraska City.

He was united in marriage to Lois M. Teten on August 16, 1945 at St. Benedict's Catholic Church in Nebraska City, NE.

Bernard was a life long farmer. He was a life long member of St. Benedict's Catholic Church -as was his family-and he was very active in the church. He was a life member of Eagles Aerie #968 in Nebraska City; a member of the Holy Name Society, Square Dance Club, We Wanna Go Camping Club and a former member of the Elks. He served as a 4-H Leader for many years, served on the District #37 School Board, and Rural Fire District where he was very instrumental in the district obtaining a rural fire truck. He also served on the Otoe County Fair Board and Otoe County Extension Board and was member of the Horned and Polled Hereford Assn. He loved flying but his greatest love was his family.

He is survived by his beloved wife Lois of Nebraska City; son Fred Gress and wife Jan of Nebr. City; daughter Linda Allen and husband Paul of Nebraska City; seven grandchildren: Michael Gress and wife Janelle of Nebr. City; Darin Gress of Hebron, NE; Jennifer Briley of Nebr. City; Kyle Gress and wife Debra of Unadilla, NE; Paula Aldana and husband Jose of Nebr. City; Joni Flewelling and husband Dennis of Nebr. City; and James Allen and wife Chrissy of Nebr. City; 21 great-grandchildren: Matt, Tom and Alex Gress; Brittney, Jacob and Justin Gress; Joshua and Jillian Briley; Ashley, Logan, and Brennan Gress; Ashlee Aldana and fiance Jason Miller, Adam, Aaron, Andrew and Aidan Aldana; Michael, Bryant and Matthew Flewelling; Nick and Kealii Allen; great-great grandchild Addy; a sister Phyllis Paap and husband Allen, Jr. of Nebr. City; other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by a daughter Sheila Gress, grandson Matthew Allen, a brother Emil, sister Elsie and his parents.

Funeral Services will be held Tuesday morning at 10:30 a.m. at St.Benedict's Catholic Church in Nebraska City, NE with Fr. Jeremy Hazuka celebrating the Mass. Burial will follow in the St. Benedict's Cemetery at Nebr. City.

A rosary will be recited Monday evening at 7:00 p.m. at the Gude Mortuary in Nebraska City.

Memorials may be given to St. Benedict's Catholic Church Building Fund.

Graden Devoe "G.D." Casey, Age 95 of Farragut, IA passed away on Sunday, December 20, 2009 in Kansas City, MO.

G.D. was born icon on March 8, 1914 in Parthenon, AR; the son of John and Esther (Reynolds) Casey. He was united in marriage to Loretta Drain on May 16, 1949 in Parthenon, AR. G.D. spent his life doing what he loved, farming.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Loretta Casey of Farragut, IA; son Jerry Casey and wife Joyce of Kansas City, MO; two granddaughters Jeni Johnson and husband Dell and Teri Casey; three great-grandchildren Maile Johnson, Janessa Johnson and Jea Johnson and other family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, 6 sisters and a great-granddaughter Tanisha Johnson.

Funeral Services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 23, 2009 at the Congregational Church in Farragut, IA with Pastor Claude Westerfield officiating; burial will follow at the Farragut Cemetery.

The family will greet friends from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday; December 22, 2009 at the Shull-Gude Funeral Home in Riverton, IA (weather permitting).

Memorials may be given to the Farragut Congregational Church.

Nadine M. Frakes

Nadine M. Frakes, Age 75 of Nebraska City passed away Saturday; December 19, 2009 at her home.

Nadine was born icon on August 20, 1934 in Nebraska City, NE; the daughter of George C. and Harriet Naomi (Lord) Frakes. Nadine graduated from Nebraska City High School in 1951 and then attended Doane College in Crete, NE.

Nadine was a long-time employee, owner and officer at Farmers Banks in Nebraska City. She began her employment with the bank in 1955 and retired in 2003 after 48 years of faithful service. Following her retirement, she continued to serve on the Board of Directors for the bank until her health declined.

She was a member of Cornerstone Church, the National Assn. of Banking Women where she was chosen as Woman of the Year, the Women's Chamber of Commerce, the Wildwood Board and the Nebraska City Alumni Association.

She is survived by her sister Chris Jordan and husband Jerry of Bellevue, NE; niece Angie Carvell and husband Josh and their children Victoria Christine and Alexandria Michele, nephew Brandon Jordan and his children Alexis Michele, Cean Scott and Kaelan William; other family and friends.

Funeral Services will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at the Gude Mortuary in Nebraska City with Rev.'s George Jacobs and Rob Connor officiating; burial will follow at the Wyuka Cemetery in Nebr. City.

The family will greet friends from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Gude Mortuary in Nebraska City.

Memorials may be given to the Cornerstone Church in Nebr. City or Tabitha Hospice.
