Howard Potter, Jr.

Howard Potter, Jr., age 80 of Nebraska City passed away on Wednesday; Oct. 7, 2009 at St. Mary's Hospital in Nebraska City.

Howard was born icon on October 7, 1929 at Hamburg, IA; the son of Howard Wilson and Hazel Ruth (Ware) Potter. He attended school in Hamburg and graduated from the Hamburg High School with the class of 1947. He entered the US Army in 1951 and was honorably discharged in 1953 after service in Korea.

On November 8, 1953, he was united in marriage to Shirley Ann Baur in Omaha, NE and to this union four children were born: David, Kevin, Cindy and Bradley. After their marriage, the couple made their home in Hamburg, IA and Howard worked at Athen Implement there. He left Athen Implement in 1963 and started working at Master's Implement until 1985 when they closed. He then owned and operated his own business - Howard's Tractor Repair - in Nebraska City as well as working at other various places.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Nebraska City; American Legion Post #8 and the We-Wanna-Go Camping Club.

He is survived by his wife of over 55 years Shirley Potter of Nebr. City; his children: David Potter and wife Mary of Lincoln, NE; Kevin Potter and wife Kathryn of Lincoln, NE; Cindy Stalder and husband Darwin of Humboldt, NE and Brad Potter and partner Tom Bordenkirtcher of Hilliard, OH; Nine grandchildren: Stephanie Potter and partner Brigid of Chicago, IL, Jonathan Potter and wife Anissa Pinkham of Portland, Maine, Rebecca Sands and husband Patrick of Lincoln, NE; Caitlyn Potter and Jeremy Potter both of Lincoln, NE and Ashley, Jamie, Dustin and Laura Stalder all of Humboldt, NE; three great-grandchildren: Sebastian Pinkham, Basil Pinkham Potter and Aghna Pinkham Potter; other family and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral Services will be held Saturday morning at 10:30 a.m. at the Gude Mortuary in Nebraska City with Rev. Jeff Kelley officiating. Burial will be in the Mt. Olive Cemetery southeast of Hamburg, IA.

The family will greet friends Friday from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Gude Mortuary in Nebr. City.

Memorials may be given to the family.

"E.K." Elmer Kenneth Gray

"E.K." Elmer Kenneth Gray, age 85 of Nebr. City, NE passed away on Sunday, October 4, 2009 at St. Mary's Hospital in Nebr. City.

E.K. was born icon on February 7, 1924 in Onawa, IA; the son of Charles Kenneth and Garnett Ann (Gray) Gray. He was united in marriage to Leona "Skip" Williamson on June 27, 1948 in Nebr. City, NE. She preceded him in death in 1988. He later married Odelle Roddy in Las Vegas, NV. She preceded him in death in 1999.

E.K. most recently worked as a slot machine tech. He previously owned and operated Gray's Septic Tank Service in Nebr. City and did work as a carpenter, electrician and did some farming. He built several homes in the Nebraska City community. He was a member of the Hillister Assembly of God Church in Hillister, TX.

He is survived by his children Peggy Hobbie and husband Gary and Bob Gray all of Nebr. City, NE; 7 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; siblings David Gray and Kenneth Gray both of Portland, ME; Charles Gray of Los Angeles, CA and Judy Fraser of Columbia, SC and other family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wives.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, October 8, 2009 at Gude Mortuary in Nebr. City; burial will follow at Wyuka Cemetery in Nebr. City.

The family will greet friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday (10/7) evening at the mortuary.

Memorials are suggested to the family.

Frances Phillips

Frances Phillips, age 89 of Hamburg, IA passed away on Thursday evening; October 1, 2009 at her home in Hamburg.

Frances Phillips was born icon on February 27, 1920 at Hamburg, IA; one of 11 children born icon to Joseph Edward and Emma Pauline (Hofsaess) Leckenby. She attended school and graduated with the class of 1938 from the Hamburg High School. She was united in marriage to S.A. "Lonnie" Phillips on August 3, 1942 in Rock Port, MO.

Frances loved being outdoors, especially working in her garden. She could make anything grow. She also enjoyed reading and cooking. For many years she had a neighbor rivalry with Mrs. Brookshire on who would produce the first tomatoes and sweet corn of the season. This would give one of them the bragging rights for the year. Most of all she enjoyed her family. She was the happiest when her family gathered!

She was a stay at home Mom until the youngest son was old enough to be trusted alone at home for a few hours. Then she went to work at Ocoma Food in Nebraska City. After leaving there, she worked in the laundry at the Hamburg Hospital. Before her many years of employment and after her retirement, she babysat for numerous children in her home, nurturing and caring for them as if they were her own. She kept contact with many of these children into their teen and adult lives.

Frances is survived by two sons: Harry Phillips and wife Donna of St. Joseph, MO and Dennis Phillips and wife Sue of Riverton, IA; grandchildren Kevin Phillips and wife Tamra of St. Joseph, MO; Kristin Thatcher and husband Steve of Agency, MO; Dan Gordon and wife Cory of Riverton, IA; Cody Phillips of Riverton, IA; Lacy Miller and husband JJ of Riverton, IA; great-grandchildren Nestor, Dominick, Donna, Harry, Holly, Benjamin - children of Kevin Phillips; Justin and McKenzie - children of Kristin and Steve Thatcher; Jake and Grace - children of Dan and Cory Gordon; other family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband S.A. "Lonnie" Phillips on June 19, 1992; sisters Leta Holman, Pauline McCall, Meta Dalhgreen, Edith Phillips and Adeline Leckenby; brothers George, Tom, John and William Leckenby; one infant child and one grandson Marty Gordon.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, October 5, 2009 at the Rash-Gude Funeral Home in Hamburg, IA with Kyle Dankof officiating; burial will follow in the Hamburg Cemetery.

The family will greet friends and family on Sunday from 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Rash-Gude Funeral Home. The casket will be closed.

Visitation for the immediate family will be from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home.

Victor A. DeLay, Sr.

Victor A. DeLay, Sr., age 82 of Lincoln, (formerly of Falls City and Nebr. City) passed away on Thursday, September 24, 2009 at the Lancaster Manor in Lincoln, NE.

He was born icon in his grandparent's home in Atkinson, NE on June 19, 1927; the son of John and Gladys DeLay. He graduated from Red Bluff, CA High School and Bayles College of Omaha, NE where he studied telegraphy and railroad accounting. He served in the United States Navy from 1942 to 1944 as a cook. He also took courses in ministry.

He worked for the Missouri Pacific RR and Union Pacific RR for 40 years. The last 17 years he served as a traveling mobile agent to many stations in Kansas and Nebraska. Prior to this he painted high bridges and smokestacks for Western Pacific.

Mr. DeLay was a member of the Church of Nazarene in Falls City, NE. He loved to play the guitar and sing. He knew over 500 Christian hymns and enjoyed writing hymns and country songs.

On July 18, 1945 he married Edna P. Hershey. To this union were born icon four sons and four daughters. God spared Edna's life twice in childbirth.

He was preceded in death by his parents and five brothers: Ray, Joe, John, George and Darrell. He is survived by his wife, Edna of Lincoln, NE; sons: Victor DeLay and wife Sandy of Cookeville, TN; Dan DeLay and wife Carol of Dunwoody, GA; Roger DeLay of Lincoln, NE; Robert DeLay and wife Susan of Lincoln, NE; daughters: Shirley Farmer and husband Doug of Lincoln, NE; Sandy Shigley of Pensacola, FL; Linda Stoner of Lincoln, NE and Christine Williams and husband Randy of Ponca City, OK; 18 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren; sisters: Betty and Barbara; sister in law Barbara DeLay of Napa Valley, CA; other family and friends.

His wife was a wonderful homemaker. She cooked large meals for 10 people. They went on camping trips to big lakes. All of them slept in a 3 room tent and cooked on a 3 burner Coleman stove. They ate wonderful trout and bass. He was visiting his son Victor in Florida when he caught a 7 ½ lb bass on a long shiner. He caught many really big catfish in Stanton Lake by Falls City, NE. He preached for nine years in two nursing homes voluntarily. The Lord saved him in 1953. He spent years in nursing homes and brought many precious souls to Christ. Many glorious miracles happened there and in churches.

Memorials are suggested to the family.

Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, September 28, 2009 at the Gude Mortuary in Nebr. City, NE with Rev. Joyce Elliott officiating; burial will follow at Wyuka Cemetery in Nebr. City with complete military honors conducted by the US Navy Funeral Honors Detail. Visitation is open on Sunday, Sept. 27 from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Gude Mortuary.

Lynn Morris

Lynn Morris, 79, Talmage, died Sunday, March 23, 2008, at St. Mary’s Community Hospital, Nebraska City.

Surviving are his wife, Rosie, two sons, Ron and Allen, all Talmage; a sister, Margie Conaway, Council Bluffs, Iowa; and sister-in-law Esther, Dunbar.

Services are Wednesday, March 26, at 11 a.m. at Faith Lutheran Church, Talmage. The Rev. Douglas Allen will officiate. Interment is at St. Paul Cemetery northeast of Talmage.

Members of Bryan-Holtgrewe American Legion Post No. 246, Talmage, will conduct graveside honors.

Visitation is Tuesday, March 25, from 9 a.m.-8 p.m. at Hall Mortuary, Talmage, which is in charge of arrangements.

Anita G. Nosky

Anita G. Nosky, 69, Lincoln, died Friday, March 21, 2008.

She had worked as a nurse’s aide for 11 years at St. Mary’s Community Hospital and Duff’s Friendship Villa in Nebraska City and was a member of St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Nebraska City.

Graveside services are Tuesday, March 25, at 11 a.m. at Wyuka Cemetery, Nebraska City. Father Michael McCabe will officiate.

Mona L. Ringle

Mona L. Ringle, 94, Nebraska City, formerly of Fremont, died Thursday, March 20, 2008, at St. Mary’s Community Hospital, Nebraska City. She was born icon May 29, 1913, at Hamburg, daughter of Mon and Eva (Marvin) Callahan. She married Wesley F. Ringle April 16, 1933, at Fremont. He died Nov. 13, 1998.

She grew up at Hamburg and later moved to Fremont. She and her husband owned Ringle Salvage Yard. Ringle enjoyed babysitting her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and neighborhood children. She was a former member of the Free Methodist Church, Fremont, where she was a Sunday school teacher and was active in the church. While living in Nebraska City Ringle attended First Baptist Church. She was a member of Fremont Alliance Church, where she was involved in many church activities.

Surviving are a son, David, Fremont; sister, Doris Osbon, Nebraska City; six grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; three nieces, Sue Jones, Texas, Linda Cummings, Corpus Christi, Texas, and Kathleen Smutz, Fremont; three nephews, Tom and Wayne Stork, Apache Junction, Ariz., and Mick Osbon, Nebraska City.

Besides her husband, Ringle was preceded by a son, Dale; and four sisters, Ruth Johnson, Martha Kirchmann, Irene Stork and Marjorie Callahan.

Services are Tuesday, March 25, at 2 p.m. at Fremont Alliance Church, Fremont. The Rev. Keith Hunt of First Baptist Church, Nebraska City, will officiate. Interment will be at Ridge Cemetery, Fremont.

Visitation will be March 25 from 9-11 a.m. at Moser Memorial Chapel, Fremont, and at the church an hour before the service.

Robert Bruce Huber

Robert Bruce Huber, 79, Nebraska City, died Wednesday, March 19, 2008, at his home. He was born icon Dec. 3, 1928, at Nebraska City, son of George and Daisy (Price) Huber. He married Joan Volkmer Feb. 18, 1958, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Paul.

Huber served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean conflict from 1951-53. He was a hard-working and dedicated farmer who worked hard to provide for his loving family. He was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church near Avoca. He was a proud father and grandfather who always enjoyed spending time with his family.

Surviving are his wife, Joan, Nebraska City; five daughters, Kris Barrett and husband Jerry, and Gayle Wurtele and husband Lou, all Nebraska City; Lisa Buchholz and husband Jim, Otoe; Lori Everett and husband David, Union; and Nadine Meyer and husband Bill, Avoca; 13 grandchildren; siblings, Mary Staack, Syracuse; Beatrice Stastny, Yerington, Nev.; Dorothy Gruenemeyer, Indianapolis; Ben Huber, Schuyler; Yvonne Smith, Boise, Idaho; and Karen Reinecke, Huntington, Calif.; and a host of other family members and friends.

He was preceded by his parents and a grandson.

Funeral mass was Monday, March 24, at St. Paulinus Catholic Church, Syracuse. Interment was at St. Mary’s Cemetery. Military services were conducted by members of the U.S. Marines Funeral Honor Detail.

Memorials may be given to Tabitha Hospice, ALS of the Heartland or Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Avoca.

Viola M. Stoll

Viola M. Stoll, age 84, of Nebraska City passed away Wednesday evening at the Ambassador in Nebraska City.

Viola was born icon on October 20, 1926 in Nebraska City, NE; the only child of Jacob and Leora (Chase) Eacret. She attended school in Nebraska City and graduated from Nebraska City High School with the class of 1945. She was united in marriage to John William "Jack" Stoll on January 23, 1946 in Hiawatha, KS.

Viola worked at Woolworths for many years and also worked at the Lourdes Hot Lunch Progam. She loved children and very much enjoyed working with the children at the lunch program. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Christian Mothers and also worked on the Election Board for many years.

She is survived by her two daughters: Susan Stoll of Julian, NE and Jackie Thomas of Kiowa, CO; four grandchildren: George Brown, Tammy Norris, Jason Brown and Danielle Thomas; seven great-grandchildren: Michael Brown, Ashley Brown, Jacquolynne Davis, Alan Davis, Travis Davis, Stephanie Norris and Jacob Brown; other family and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her dear husband Jack Stoll on June 10, 1999.

Funeral Services for Viola Stoll will be held Monday morning (Jan. 24) at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Nebraska City with Fr. Michael McCabe celebrating the Mass. Burial will follow in the Wyuka Cemetery at Nebr. City.

Viewing will begin at 1:00 p.m. Sunday at the Gude Mortuary. A rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. Sunday at the mortuary followed by the family receiving friends.

Memorials may be given to Lourdes Endowment Fund, St. Mary's Christian Mothers or the Lymphoma Foundation.

Gerald "Jerry" Henne

Age 78, of Nebraska City, NE passed away on Wednesday, January 19, 2011 at the Ambassador in Nebraska City, NE.

Jerry was born icon on June 7, 1932 in Dunning, NE; the son of Raymond and Hazel M. (Thompson) Henne. He attended school in Brownville, NE and graduated from Brownville High School with the class of 1951. He joined the United States Marine Corps on Feb. 20, 1952 and honorably served his country during the Korean War. During his time in service, he received numerous medals and citations from the Marine Corp. He was honorably discharged on Feb. 19, 1955.

Jerry was united in marriage to Francelia W. Allen on December 7, 1956 at Raton, New Mexico and to this union six children were born. Jerry worked in the construction business, he did over the road hauling and operated his own business hauling rock. Most recently, he worked for Prince of the Road Escort Service. He was a member of St. Benedict's Catholic Church and the Labor Union.

Jerry is survived by his wife Francelia Henne of Nebr. City, NE; six children: Gary Henne and wife Mary of Auburn, NE; Ronda Henne of Nebr. City, NE; Marvin Henne of Auburn, NE; Steven Henne and wife Mary of Nehawka, NE; Therese Hoyle and husband Mark of Nebr. City, NE and Tracey Henne and wife Kendra of Plattsmouth, NE; 18 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild; a brother Richard Henne and wife Velma of Nixa, MO and sister-in-law Lenora Henne of Syracuse, NE; other family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one granddaughter; a brother Donald Henne and 2 sisters Catherine Eldrige and Sherri Nincehelser.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 22, 2011 at St. Benedict's Catholic Church in Nebraska City, NE with Fr. Mark Cyza celebrating the Mass. Graveside interment services will be held at 1:15 p.m. Saturday at the Holy Cross Cemetery south of Auburn, NE with complete military services.

A Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 21, 2011 at Gude Mortuary followed by the family greeting friends.

Memorials may be given to Lourdes Central Catholic Schools in Nebr. City.
