Michael A. Bascom

Michael A. Bascom, age 64 of Auburn, NE; formerly Nebraska City passed away at his home on September 26, 2010 (Sunday).

He was born icon on April 27, 1946 in Nebr. City; the son of Charles A. Bascom and Naoma A. Comstock. He attended school and graduated from the Nebr. City High School with the class of 1965.

Mike was a self-employed painter. He gave blood at the Red Cross Bloodmobile numerous times.

He is survived by a daughter Aubrey Bascom of Franklin, NC; sisters: Nikki Oberg and husband Rod of Marietta, GA; Ronda Wigington and husband John of Nebr. City and Deb Witte and friend Tim of Nebr. City; other family and friends.

No services are planned.

Charles C. "Chuck" Finley

Charles C. "Chuck" Finley, age 79, of Lincoln, NE; formerly of Nebr. City passed away on Wednesday evening, September 22, 2010 at The Monarch in Lincoln, NE.

He was born icon on November 5, 1930 in Sioux City, IA; the son of Cline C. and Olga (Dusatko) Finley. He attended school and graduated from Benson High School in Omaha, NE. He was united in marriage to Beverly Mohring and to this union four sons were born: Dave, Gregg, Doug and John. Chuck later married Connie Harms on December 2, 1983 in Nebraska City, NE.

He worked for O.P.P.D. for many years and retired from there in 1985. He was a life-long member of the Blue Birds across Nebraska and served as their coordinator for many years.

He is survived by his wife Connie Finley of Lincoln, NE; sons: Dave Finley and wife Cathy of Bellevue, NE, Gregg Finley and wife Mary of Omaha, NE, Doug Finley and wife Michelle of Omaha and John Finley and wife Jana of Omaha; daughters: Tammy Secord and husband Jim of Lincoln, NE and LuAnn Snyder and husband Mitch of Lincoln, NE; 16 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren; a brother Thomas Finley of Omaha and his children Steve and Julie; other family and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife Beverly and his parents.

Funeral Services will be held Saturday morning (9/25) at 11:00 a.m. at the Gude Mortuary in Nebraska City with Pastor Aaron Erdley officiating. Burial will follow at the Wyuka Cemetery in Nebraska City.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday at the Gude Mortuary in Nebraska City.

Memorials may be given to the American Heart Assn. or Parkinson Disease Assn.

Tony England

Tony England, age 50; formerly of Nebraska City passed away on Monday; September 20, 2010 at Faith Ridge Life Center in Malvern, IA.

Tony A. England, age 50, of Malvern, IA (formerly Clarinda, IA) passed away on Monday, September 20, 2010 at the Faith Ridge Life Center in Malvern, IA.

Tony was born icon on May 6, 1960 in Nebraska City, NE; the son of Louis "Tommy" and Marilyn I. (Broughton) England.

He is survived by his children Brandon England, Bryce England and Brianna England all of Tarkio, MO; sister Sandra Jean Moore of Wharton, TX and Tommy R. "Manny" England of Nebr. City, NE and other family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his dad, Tommy, on Dec. 25, 1993 and his mom, Marilyn, on Sept. 30, 2007 and a brother Jason England.

Graveside Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 24, 2010 at Wyuka Cemetery in Nebr. City, NE.

Memorials are suggested to the family.

Betty L. Murphy

Betty L. Murphy, age 84, of Hamburg, IA passed away on Friday, September 17, 2010 at the Ambassador in Sidney, IA.

Betty was born icon on February 4, 1926 in Langdon, MO; the daughter of Harmon and Mary (Davis) Gerdes. She graduated from Rock Port High School in Missouri in 1944. She was united in marriage to Glen Eldon Murphy on October 3, 1954 in Sidney, IA and to this union two children were born: Vic and Debbie.

Betty was a devoted wife and mother. She worked at the former Interstate Nurseries in Hamburg as an Order Filler. She was a member of the Hamburg Methodist Church, the American Legion Auxiliary and the Grape Community Hospital Auxiliary.

She is survived by her children Vic Murphy and wife Rhonda of Hamburg, IA and Debbie Sturm and husband Marc of Hamburg, IA ; four grandchildren: Jarrod and Kylie Murphy and Dustin and Dayne Sturm; her twin brother Bob Gerdes and wife Beverly of Weldon Spring, MO and other family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Glen Murphy in 1995 and three sisters: Doris Muntz, Wilma Stepp and Gertrude Tookey.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 22, 2010 at the Methodist Church in Hamburg, IA with Pastor Thelma Subramanian officiating; burial will follow at the Hamburg Cemetery.

There will be open visitation on Tuesday (9/21) from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Rash-Gude Funeral Home in Hamburg, IA.

William T. Warren

William T. Warren, age 80, of Auburn, NE (formerly Nebr. City) passed away early Tuesday; September 14, 2010 at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Auburn, NE.

William was born icon on May 13, 1930 in Nebraska City, NE; the son of William J. and Mary M. (Portis) Warren. He attended school in Nebraska City and then he entered the United States Army on February 27, 1952 and served until April 2, 1954 during the Korean War.

He was united in marriage to Elaine Barnes in Torrington, WY. He later married Dorothy Miedl in 1961 in Green River, WY. Bill was a truck driver for the Nogg Brothers Paper Company for some 22 years. He also worked for Lincoln Inspection Service inspecting grain cars and at O.P.P.D. until his retirement.

He is survived by his children: Sharon Rexious and significant other Eddie Perez of Torrington, WY; Susie Vandermate and husband Vandy of Casper, WY; Cheryl Horne of Auburn, NE; Wade Warren and wife Jaque of Kimball, NE; Carmen Mann and husband Garland of Julian, NE and Karena Reeves and husband Brett of Peru, NE; dear and special friend Dorothy Miedl of Auburn, NE; 17 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; siblings Max Warren of Plattsmouth, NE and Bernice Streeter and husband Clarence of Auburn, NE and other family and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, September 17, 2010 at Gude Mortuary in Nebraska City with Pastor Edie Bickford officiating; burial will follow at Wyuka Cemetery in Nebr. City with complete military services conducted by the Nebraska Army National Guard Funeral Honors Detail.

Pallbearers will be Billy and Jimmy Black, Brett Reeves, Jr., Shawn Warren, Derrek Mann, Daniel Strobel and Jimmy Ervin.

The family will greet friends on Thursday (9/16) from 6:00p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Gude Mortuary.

Gilbert J. Hart

Gilbert J. Hart, age 73, of Hamburg, IA passed away late Sunday evening, September 12, 2010 at BryanLGH East in Lincoln, NE.

Gilbert was born icon on July 28, 1937 in Milwaukee, WI; the son of John and Mildred M. (Sherman) Hart. He attended school in Milwaukee and then served in the United States Navy.

Gilbert was united in marriage to Charlotte E. Cooper on February 11, 1961 in Rockford, IL. He worked as a mechanic for GM for 27 years in Wisconsin, Colorado and Wyoming. He was a member of Pheasants Forever, N.R.A. and the Knights of Columbus.

He is survived by his daughter Donna Lee Flowers and husband Bob of Rock Port, MO; one grandchild Amanda; two great-grandchildren Izaiah and Jenna; siblings Diane Braeger; Ethel Stulo and Robert Hart all of Milwaukee, WI and other family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife Charlotte Hart in February of 2006 and sisters Janice and Kathleen.

No services are planned.

Memorials may be given to American Cancer Society.

Edward L. Benson, Jr.

Edward L. Benson, Jr., age 73 passed away on July 14, 2010 at the Alexandria Hospital.

Ed was born icon on November 3, 1936, the eldest child of Edward Lee ad Katherine Benson of Des Moines, IA. He proudly served his country in the US Air Force for twenty years before joining the Foreign Service where he served in domestic and overseas assignments. He was united in marriage to Margaret Solzman on February 22, 1969 at the Baptist Church in Hamburg, IA.

He is survived by his wife Margaret (Solzman) Benson and daughter Amy Benson both currently of Woodbridge, VA; his father Edward Lee Benson of Norwalk, IA; sister Mary Jane Hildreth and husband Jim and brother Frederick Eugene Benson and wife Linda all of Indianola, IA; brother and sister-in-law Raymond Underwood and wife Beth of Rock Port, MO; many nieces and nephews and other family and friends.

Ed was a member of the Nishnabotna Lodge #153 A.F. and A.M. in Sidney, IA. He was a lifelong member of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite in the Valley of Marquette.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 9, 2010 at the Rash-Gude Funeral Home in Hamburg, IA with Rev. Tom Beutler officiating; inurnment will follow the services at the Hamburg Cemetery.

Kevin E. Pfeiffer

Kevin E. Pfeiffer, age 39 of Omaha; formerly of Nebraska City, passed away on Wednesday; September 1, 2010 at his home.

He was born icon on December 16, 1970 in Nebraska City, NE; the youngest son of Leo A. and Rosemarie L. (Sistek) Pfeiffer. He attended the Zion Country School-District #37 near Paul throught the 6th grade. He then attended Nebraska City Lourdes where he graduated with the class of 1989. Following his graduation, he attended school in Milford where he received an associates Degree in Drafting/Surveying. He was currently working as a Surveyor for Douglas County in and around the Omaha area.

He was united in marriage to Jacqueline Durr on September 16, 1994 at St. Leo‘s Catholic Church in Omaha, NE. Kevin was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Omaha, NE and the Stevens Ministry. He volunteered countless hours of his time to his church..

He is survived by his children Rebecca and Ryan Pfeiffer of Omaha, NE; his mother Rosemarie Pfeiffer of Nebr. City, NE; three brothers: Donald Pfeiffer and wife Angela of Beaver Crossing, NE, Kenneth Pfeiffer and wife Kris of Lincoln, NE, and Dennis Pfeiffer of Kankakee, IL; numerous aunts and uncles, other family and many friends.

Funeral Services will be held on Saturday (Sept. 4) at10:30 a.m.at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Nebraska City with Fr. Michael McCabe celebrating the Mass. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery near Paul, NE.

A rosary will be recited Friday evening at 7:00 at the Gude Mortuary in Nebraska City followed by the family receiving friends.

A memorial fund is being established for Kevin's children Rebecca and Ryan.

Larry D. Frazier

Larry D. Frazier, age 69, of Hamburg, IA passed away on Tuesday, August 31, 2010 at Bergan Mercy Medical Center in Omaha, NE.

Larry was born icon on July 31, 1941 in Hamburg, IA. He was the son of Lewis A. and Dorothy L. (Hudson) White. He was united in marriage to Lillian C. "Lynn" Welch on June 24, 1972 in Nebraska City, NE.

Larry worked at Vogel Fertilizer, he drove truck for Lyman- Ritchie Aggregates of Weeping Water, NE and most recently he had worked at the Hamburg Car Wash for 10 years.

He is survived by his wife Lillian "Lynn" Frazier of Hamburg, IA; his five children Becky Tomlyn-Litten and husband D.L. of San Diego, CA; Marty Frazier and wife Jodi of Denver, CO; Beverly Sydow of Florida; Melissa Frazier of Hamburg, IA and Michael McKibben of Hamburg, IA; five grandchildren; siblings Morgan White and wife Kathy of Hamburg, IA; David White and wife Debbie of Hamburg, IA and Betty Cary and husband Bill of Pawnee City, NE; many nieces and nephews and other family and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 4, 2010 at Rash-Gude Funeral Home in Hamburg, IA with Pastor Tom Beutler officiating; burial will follow at Hamburg Cemetery.

The family will greet friends from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday (9/3) at the funeral home.

Memorials may be given to the family.

Rex W. Mitzner

Rex W. Mitzner, age 64 of Nebraska City, passed away on Wednesday, August 25, 2010 at St. Elizabeth's Regional Med. Center in Lincoln, NE.

Rex was born icon on March 1, 1946 in Nebr. City, NE; the son of Marion M. and Betty Jean (Thompson) Mitzner.

Rex served 8 years in the Nebraska Army National Guard.

Rex lived at Riverview Terrace in Nebr. City and helped with the maintenance and various other jobs there.

He is survived by his daughter Toni Byfield and husband Richard of Auburn, NE; 5 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, August 30, 2010 at Gude Mortuary in Nebr. City.

Paul V. Zanker

Paul V. Zanker passed away August 18, 2010 at Garden View Care Center in Shenandoah, IA.

He was born icon in Hamburg, IA on March 9, 1921 to Charles and Mary (Weste) Zanker. After attending Cox Chapel School, he helped his father and brothers on the farm.

He was a Tech Sargeant in the Air Force during World War II, taking part in D-Day and the Battle of the Bulge. He was awarded 7 battle stars.

After the war, he farmed with his brothers Carl, Raymond and Harold for nearly 40 years.

He married Carolyn Cowles, daughter of Thad and Myrtle Cowles on January 9, 1955. They had three sons: Charlie, John and James.

"Slim" had many hobbies and was well known in this area for his extensive toy tractor collection and restoration skills. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the American Legion, serving in the Honor Guard for over 60 years. He served on the City Council and was a member of several other military and civic organizations in the past.

He retired from farming in 1983, but continued to work at the farm until just recently.

Slim was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters Hilda and Hazel, and brothers Carl, Raymond and Harold.

He is survived by his wife Carolyn, sister Ruby of Hamburg, children: Charlie and wife Jaylene and grandson Matthew of Hamburg; John and granddaughter Samantha and twin sons Jonathan and Jeffrey of Lafayette, IN; James and wife Kyle of Ft. Wayne, IN and grandsons Josh and Paul of Washington, D.C.

Graveside Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 28, 2010 at Mt. Olive Cemetery in Rural Hamburg, IA; inurnment will follow the services.

Memorials may be given to the Hamburg Legion Honor Guard or Iowa Hospice.
