Raymond Donald Lee Crowner

Raymond Donald Lee Crowner, age 72 of Nebr. City, NE passed away on Tuesday, August 17, 2010 at the Ambassador in Nebraska City, NE.

Raymond Donald Lee Crowner, who was always called Don or Donald, was born icon on October 25, 1937 in Nebraska City, NE; the son of Shubert and Ottilia (Sims) Crowner. Donald grew up in Nebraska City and graduated from Nebraska City High School in 1957.

While he was still in high school, at the age of 16, Donald began working at Morton House Kitchens in Nebr. City. He worked there until they closed. He got a job at the Trump Manufacturing plant outside Plattsmouth, and after awarding Donald a watch for working there for two years, that plant was closed. He was without a job for a couple of years, and then he went to work on a hog farm outside Otoe, NE. After working there for some time, he developed some infection in his feet. The doctors wanted to amputate both feet because of the infection, but Donald refused to allow it. It was not done, and they healed. He worked for a short time, but then was forced to retire because of other health problems.

Donald moved into Riverview Terrace, where he lived until he suffered a stroke and a possible heart attack in 2003. He went to the hospital, and then to the Ambassador Care Center, where he recuperated enough to go into a private room there. He lived there for the rest of his life.

As a young man, Donald played golf, and was an avid bowler. He also like to go fishing, but he refused to use bait or a fishhook. He also liked to go to the Memorial Building to watch wrestling matches that were held there, and would also drive to the wrestling matches in Omaha.

Donald liked dogs, and had several of them as pets during his lifetime. He liked watching TV. His favorite shows were Westerns and movies, especially with John Wayne.

Donald is survived by three brothers: Joe Crowner, John Strange of Murray, NE; Mike Strange of Bloomsdale, MO; three sisters: Linda Strange of New Jersey; Patty Weber of Bloomsdale, MO; Wanda Strange Beline of Guam and other family and friends.

Memorial Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, August 23, 2010 at Gude Mortuary in Nebr. City, NE. Inurnment will follow the services at Wyuka Cemetery in Nebr. City.

Robert F. DeVorss

Robert F. DeVorss, age 75 of Nebraska City, NE passed away on Sunday, August 15, 2010 at St. Elizabeth's Regional Medical Center in Lincoln, NE.

Robert was born icon on January 28, 1935 in Shubert, NE; the son of Charles Floyd and Elsie (Boatman) DeVorss. He attended school in Nebraska City. He was united in marriage to Lola Yates on April 17, 1955 in Auburn, NE. .

On January 17, 1955 he entered the United States Air Force and was honorably discharged on November 16, 1958.

Robert owned and operated Bob's Auto Repair for many years until his retirement in 2000.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife Lola DeVorss of Nebr. City; son: Robert F. DeVorss Jr. and his children: Holly and Taylor DeVorss; daughter Kim Kreifels and husband Clint and their children: Jason Kreifels and wife Jaclyn and Lisa Andrew and husband Bryce; daughter Karla DeVorss and her children: Tara and Neil DeVorss; and daughter Kathy Allgood and husband Bret and their daughter Kylie Allgood all of Nebr. City, NE; two great-grandchildren: Justus Kreifels and Aca Andrew; siblings: Ronald DeVorss and wife Carolee of Tecumseh, NE; Lorraine Rico and husband Joe of Nebr. City, NE; sisters-in-law: Phyllis Curry of Auburn, NE; Jean Slagle of Tecumseh, NE and Sally Yates of Lincoln, NE and other family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents Charles Floyd and Elsie DeVorss; mother and father in law: Pete and Marie Yates; sisters Wanda McGuire and Dorothy Morris; brother Richard DeVorss; brother-in-law Donald Yates and daughter-in-law Susan Elaine DeVorss.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 18, 2010 at Gude Mortuary in Nebr. City with Fr. Mark Cyza officiating. Burial will be at Wyuka Cemetery in Nebr. City, NE with Military Services conducted by the United States Air Force Funeral Honors Detail.

The family will greet friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday (8/17) at Gude Mortuary.

Thomas Hietbrink

Thomas Hietbrink, age 88 of rural Nebraska City passed away on Tuesday; February 22, 2011 at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Grand Island, NE.

He was born icon on March 13, 1922 at Adams, NE; the son of Benjamin and Anna (Osting) Hietbrink. He was united in marriage to Marie Feilen and the couple shared 25 years of their lives together.

Tom worked at various places and could be best described as a "jack of all trades". He was a farmer in his younger years and then owned and operated the tavern in Paul, NE. He was also an over the road truck driver and served as the bulk plant manager for an oil company. He also managed the Farmers Co-op and sold cars. He enjoyed golfing and yard work and loved the outdoors. His passion was taking care of people.

He entered the U.S. Army on September 26, 1942 and honorably served his country until his honorable discharge on October 27, 1945. During his time in the Army, he was the recipient of the Purple Heart Medal as well as other various decorations and citations. He was a member of the Purple Heart Association and the American Legion.

He is survived by a son Roger Hietbrink of West Palm Springs, FL; brother Ken Hietbrink and wife Elda of Ft. Morgan, CO; sister Chrys Rolff of Peoria, AZ; sister-in-law JoAnn Feilen of rural Nebr. City; step-sons: Rod Westerlin and wife Deb of Omaha, NE and Rick Westerlin and wife Lori of Chicago, IL; and other family and friends.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held Monday; Feb. 28. 2011 at 10:30 a.m. at the Gude Mortuary in Nebraska City with Rev. Rodger Good of the Bethel United Church of Christ officiating. Military honors will be conducted at the mortuary by the Nebraska Army National Guard Funeral Honors Detail.

Private family inurnment will be at the Wyuka Cemetery in Nebraska City, NE.

Memorials may be given to the Purple Heart Association.

Mary Catherine (Sand) Zech

Age 90, of Douglas, NE passed away on Monday, February 21, 2011 at BryanLGH East in Lincoln, NE.

Catherine was born icon on July 4, 1920 in Nebraska City, NE; the daughter of Fridolin O. and Adeline H. (Bischof) Sand. She attended school in Nebr. City and graduated from St. Bernard's Academy (Lourdes Central Catholic) in 1938. She attended St. Joseph's Junior College in Maple Mount, KY and received her teaching certificate. Then later in life, Catherine continued her education at the Univ. of Nebraska at Lincoln and received her Bachelors Degree in Elementary Education. She was an elementary teacher for some 30 years.

Catherine was united in marriage to Arthur Lowell Zech on June 11, 1942 in San Diego, CA and to this union seven children were born: Julianne, Linda Kay, Gary Wynn, Mary Jo, Thomas Harry, David Arthur and Barbara Jean. She was a member of St. Martin's Catholic Church in Douglas, NE and St. Martin's Altar Society and was very active in the church.

She is survived by her children: Linda Kay Zech of Douglas, NE; Mary Jo Pankoke of Lincoln, NE; Thomas Harry Zech and wife Becky of Eagle, NE; David Arthur Zech of Douglas, NE; Barbara Jean Leising and husband Steve of Roca, NE; son-in-law Ronald Nishimura of Long Beach, CA; 13 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren; siblings: Patricia Sand Sloan and husband Blaine of Ft. Garland, CO; Robert Fridolin Sand of Olympia, WA; sister-in-law Mary O'Grady Sand of Lincoln, NE and many other family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband Arthur L. Zech on April 13, 1999; children Julianne Adams and Gary Wynn Zech both in 2010; brother Dr. Paul F. Sand; sisters Margaret (Peggy) Sand Nabity, Dorothy A. Sand and Jean Sand Anderson and an infant brother James R. Sand.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, February 26, 2011 at St. Martin's Catholic Church in Douglas, NE with Fr. Christopher Barak as the celebrant. Burial will follow at St. Martin's Cemetery.

There will visitation at Gude Mortuary in Nebr. City from 12:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Friday (2/25). Visitation at the church will begin at 4:30 p.m. and a rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. in Catherine's memory.

Memorials may be given to the Douglas Library, Nebraska Children & Families Foundation or St. Martin's Catholic Church in Douglas, NE.

Willa I. (Arthur) Stedry

Age 72 of Wichita, KS; formerly of Nebraska City passed away on Saturday; February 12, 2011 in Wichita following a brief illness

Willa Irene Arthur was born icon on November 24, 1938 in Pawnee City, NE; the first child of Dayton S. and Nadine W. (Tannyhill) Arthur. She was later joined by her sisters: Donneta, Judith and Rhonda.

The family moved to Nebraska City in 1942 and Willa attended several schools. She graduated from the Nebraska City High School with the class of 1957.

Following college, Willa lived briefly in Lincoln, NE and then relocated to Kansas where she lived in Topeka, then McPherson. During her time in McPherson, Willa was recognized as an Outstanding Young Career Woman for her work with the Jaycees Toys for Tots program.

Willa married Doug Stedry in June of 1965 and the couple raised two children; a daughter Dayna Sheridan and a son Brent A. Stedry. The couple later divorced and Willa and the children relocated to Wichita where she worked for Farm and Ranch Life Insurance, Montgomery Wards and the IRS,-where she was still employed at the time of her death.

She was preceded in death by her father Dayton S. Arthur and a sister and brother-in-law: Donneta and Duane Smith.

She is survived by mother Nadine Arthur of Nebraska City; daughter Dayna Sheridan of Wichita, KS; son Brent Stedry and wife Yunsuk of Leavenworth, KS; two grandchildren: Abby and Adam Stedry of Leavenworth and sisters: Judith McElroy and husband Rod of Percival, IA and Rhonda Arthur of Phoenix, AZ; other family and friends.

Memorial Services will be held Thursday (Feb. 24) at 11:00a.m. at the Gude Mortuary in Nebraska City with Rev. Jeff Kelley officiating. Burial will follow in the Wyuka Cemetery at Nebr. City, NE.

A memorial fund is being established in her memory.

Bennie M. Collins

Age 83 of Hamburg, IA passed away on Sunday morning; February 20, 2011 at the Ambassador in Sidney, IA.

He was born icon on July 18, 1927 at Watson, MO; the son of John and Mary M. "Peg" (Ozenbaugh) Collins.

Bennie was united in marriage to Esther Osborn on September 1, 1945 at Hiawatha, KS and the couple shared over 65 years together. He worked at the former Conkey's Mill in Nebraska City for some 15 years and at Cargill for over 21 years. He was a member of the Hamburg Methodist Church. He loved to hunt and fish and was an avid outdoorsman.

He is survived by his wife Esther Collins of Hamburg, IA; three children: Michael Collins and special friend Shelley of Lincoln, NE, Judith Gonzalez of Mt. Pleasant, IA and Theresa Willey and husband Mark of Olds, IA; 6 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and a brother Everett Collins of Council Bluffs, IA as well as a host of other family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by a grandson Todd Collins, brothers: John Henry, Bill and Jack Collins and his parents.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. graveside at the Hamburg Cemetery with Rev. Thelma Subramanian of the Hamburg Methodist Church officiating. Burial will follow the services.

Pallbearers are Mark Willey, Nate Tracey, Merle and Charles Dovel, Louis Becker and Shawn Collins. The family will receive friends Monday evening from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Rash-Gude Funeral Home in Hamburg, IA.

Memorials may be given to the family.

Bernice K. (Wurtele) Ferguson

Age 96 of Nebraska City passed away at her home on Sunday morning February 20, 2011.

She was born icon on August 9, 1914 at Dunbar, NE; the daughter of Joe and Hattie (Scharp) Schreiner.

She was united in marriage to Ralph Wurtele on July 9, 1932 in Nebraska City, NE and to this union three children were born. Ralph preceded her in death in 1971. She later married Scott Ferguson on July 19, 1982 in Waynesboro, MS. He also preceded her in death in 2002.

Bernice was a housewife and homemaker. She was a very talented musician and enjoyed playing the piano at the local nursing homes. She also enjoyed gardening.

She is survived by her daughter Linda Brooke and husband Vernon of Nebraska City, NE; a son Roger Wurtele and wife Jeannie of Plano, TX; ten grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, six great-great grandchildren; other family and friends.

In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by her daughter Darlene Webber in 1961, a grandchild Eldon in infancy and two sisters: Elsie Patton and Alma Huss.

Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon (Feb. 24) at 2:00 p.m. at the Gude Mortuary in Nebraska City, NE with Rev. Rodger Good of the Bethel United Church of Christ officiating. Burial will be in the Wyuka Cemetery at Nebraska City, NE.

The family will greet friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Gude Mortuary in Nebraska City, NE.

Memorials may be given to the family in her memory.

Norman R. Hansen

Age 87 of Hamburg, IA passed away on Sunday morning; February 13, 2011 at the Ambassador in Sidney, IA.

He was born icon on April 6, 1923 in Ord, NE; the son of Henry and Dagny (Tiedman) Hansen. Norman attended school in Omaha, NE and graduated from Omaha North High School with the class of 1941. He became a member of the United States Army/Air Corps in 1942 and faithfully and honorably served his country until his discharge in 1946.

He was united in marriage to Loisjean A. Small on May 3, 1947 in Omaha, NE.

Norman was a corporate pilot for several Omaha businesses for some 40 years. He then worked as a pilot for Duncan Aviation in Lincoln, NE for 10 years before retiring. He was a member of the United Trinity Church of Hamburg, IA.

He is survived by his children: Nancy Taylor and husband Roger of Overland Park, KS; Keith Hansen and wife Mary of Hamburg, IA; Neil Hansen of Hartford, KS and Gary Hansen of Hamburg, IA; five grandchildren: Amber Rish, Chris, Terry, Matthew and Sgt. A.J. Hansen; two great-grandchildren: Aidan Lowe Hansen and Constantine Scott Hansen; sisters: Eleanor Gatti of Boston, MA and Pauline Gately of Carver, MA; other family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife in November of 1977; daughter Joy Hansen in November of 1977; a son Eric Hansen in February of 1984; a sister Thelma and a brother Harold.

Funeral Services will be held Wednesday (Feb. 16) at 10:30 a.m. at the United Trinity Church in Hamburg, IA with Pastor Chuck Bulger officiating. Graveside interment services with military honors will be held Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. at the Westlawn-Hillcrest Cemetery in Omaha.

The family will greet friends Tuesday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Rash-Gude Funeral Home in Hamburg, IA. The casket will remain closed.

Memorials may be given to the Hamburg Fire/Rescue Dept. or Grape Community Hospital in Hamburg, IA.

Jerry Lee Schreiter

Age 72 of Los Angeles, CA; formerly of the Dunbar, NE area passed away on December 29, 2010 in Los Angeles.

He was born icon on April 15, 1938 at Dunbar, NE; the son of Leonard Edward and Della Mae (Lowrey) Schreiter. Jerry grew up on the family farm north of Dunbar, NE and attended school through the 8th grade at District #11 Smallfoot Country School north of Dunbar, NE. He then attended Dunbar High School where he graduated with the class of 1956.

Jerry enlisted in the National Guard on October 13, 1956 and was discharged on September 27, 1959. He worked at Morton House Canning Factory and at Clemmy Holmes Motor Company both in Nebr. City.

Jerry moved to Los Angeles, CA by 1960 and was residing in Valley Village, CA at the time he passed away. He worked as a bookkeeper for an Appliance Company in Van Nuys, CA for several years.

He was a member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in North Hollywood, CA and with his love of animals he was a long-time member of the National Humane Society. He also loved music - especially music from the late 50's and 60's and Jazz. He was an avid cook and possessed many cookbooks and cooking magazines.

Jerry was also very fond of his nieces and nephews and was always happy to hear about them. He saved all correspondence from his mother, sisters, nieces and nephews over the years! He also loved the California weather and refused to visit Nebraska in the winter - not even at Christmas. He often called to let his family know he was enjoying 70 degree weather.

He is survived by his two sisters: Linda Sue Weston and husband Tom of Nebr. City, NE and Alice Auer and husband Randy of Syracuse, NE; numerous nieces and nephews; other family and many friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two infant sisters Francis Ann and Polly Kay Schreiter.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, February 12, 2011at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Nebraska City; inurnment will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery in Nebr. City.

The family will receive friends in St. Mary's Church Hall following the inurnment services at the cemetery.
