Richard L. James

Age 66, of Nebraska City passed away on Tuesday, March 15, 2011 at the Ambassador in Nebraska City.

Richard was born icon on October 10, 1944 in Nebraska City, NE; the son of Merritt Earl and Irene Frances (Belcher) James who were married on June 9, 1933 in Los Angeles, CA. He attended school in Nebraska City and graduated with the Class of 1962 where he served as President of his class. After high school he joined the United States Navy and served from Sept. 15, 1964 to July 30, 1968. During his time in the Navy, he was an Electronics' Mechanic.

He was united in marriage to Linda Diane Deras on September 28, 1991 in Nebraska City.

Richard worked for the Nebraska City Utilities as a Lineman for 37 years. He retired in January of 2007. He was a member of the Eagles and enjoyed playing softball. Rich was also a "jack of all trades" and was very skilled in construction, carpentry and electrical work. He very much enjoyed working on his home as well as helping others with their remodeling projects. He was one who had to do a project perfect, or he was not satisfied!

He is survived by his wife Diane James of Nebraska City; daughter Rena Miller and husband Todd of Meridian, ID; sons: Randy DeVorss of Nebr. City, Danny DeVorss of Colorado Springs, CO, Bryan DeVorss of Julian, NE and Matt Tillman of Nebr. City; seven grandchildren: Hayden and Randy Miller, Rudi Richmond, Madeline DeVorss, Tyler Tillman, Ben DeVorss and Jordan Tillman; siblings: Barbara James of Nebr. City; Merritt James and wife Mary of Lincoln, NE and Donald "Dee Dee" James of Nebr. City; father in law Bud Carrillo of Nebr. City; sisters in law Georgia Harrah and Mary Jo Gadeken and husband Jerry all of Nebr. City; nieces, nephews and other family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his mother on Dec. 24, 1991 and his father on Dec. 30, 1963.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 19, 2011 at Gude Mortuary in Nebr. City with Fr. Michael McCabe officiating. Military Honors will be conducted at the mortuary by the U.S. Navy Funeral Honors Detail following the funeral services.

The family will greet friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday evening at the mortuary.

Stephen John Hinze

Age 58 of Hamburg, IA passed away at his home on January 23, 2011.

He was born icon on June 3, 1952 at St. Mary's Hospital in Nebraska City, NE; the son of Gene Merritt and Doloris Ellen (Paben) Hinze. He attended school in Hamburg and graduated from the Hamburg High School with the class of 1970.

Stephen farmed for many years with his late father Gene. He was one who always loved the outdoors.

He is survived by his mother Doloris Hinze of Hamburg, IA; sisters: Sandra Christensen and special friend William Himebaugh of Panama; Elizabeth Siegling and husband Robert of Mesa, AZ; nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews; other family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father on October 27, 2008.

Memorial Services will be held Saturday (March 19) at 11:00 a.m. at the Rash-Gude Funeral Home in Hamburg, IA with Pastor Jan Phillips officiating. Inurnment will be in the Hamburg Cemetery.

Theodore M. "Ted" Wirth

Age 95, of Nebraska City, died Sunday, March 13, 2011 at the Ambassador in Nebraska City. He was born icon in Nebraska City March 13, 1916 to Otto and Agnes Wirth.

He attended District 17 School, St. Bernard's Academy and the University of Nebraska Farm Operator's Program.

He was a life-long devout member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. He farmed in Otoe County with family members except during military service before and during World War II. He married Charlotte McGowen, an instructor at the Nebraska Center for the Education of Children who are Blind or Visually Impaired, in Columbia, Mo., on Dec. 23, 1941.

During the war, Theodore served as a bombardier on a B-17 crew. He flew 17 missions, the last one on Jan. 4, 1944 when the plane was disabled and crash-landed in Denmark. He spent the remainder of the European War in a German prisoner of war camp.

After the war, he and his wife spent the majority of their 60-year marriage on the family farm west of Nebraska City. He enjoyed farming, being active in the operation into his 90th year. He was a long-time livestock producer and was active in forming the Otoe County Livestock Feeders Association. He had a passion for preserving the quality of the soil and served as a member of the Otoe County Soil Conservation Committee and was one of the first farmers to adopt no-till farming in Nebraska.

He enjoyed classical music, baseball, beef and ice cream.

He was preceded by his wife, Charlotte in 2002, infant daughter Barbara, brother Jerome in 2004 and brother Austin in 2004.

He is survived by his children and their spouses, John and Sherri of Littleton, Colo., Gerald and Susan of Nebraska City, James and Cheryl of Nebraska City, Marylou and Dave Garrett of Omaha and Donald and Denise of Grand Island; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Kathleen McGowen Wirth of Salinas, Calif.; and nieces and nephews.

Memorials are suggested to St. Mary's Catholic Church and the American Red Cross.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 17, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Nebraska City with Fr. Michael McCabe as the celebrant. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery in Nebraska City with the Offutt Air Force Base Honor Guard conducting military honors.

A Rosary will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 16, at Gude Mortuary in Nebraska City followed by the family receiving friends.

Gude Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Kathleen M. "Kathy" Spidell

Age 68 of Nebraska City, NE passed away on Friday; March 11, 2011 at St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Lincoln, NE.

She was born icon on March 2, 1943 in Omaha, NE; the daughter of Harold Patrick and Florence (Kelly) Sheridan. She attended school in Omaha at Notre Dame Catholic School.

She was united in marriage to Jack Lee Spidell on September 30, 1967 at the Methodist Church in Nebraska City, NE.

Kathy was a housewife and homemaker and also worked as a Nursing Assistant at various nursing homes in the area. She worked for a short time at Duff's Friendship Villa in Nebraska City, the Beatrice Good Samaritan Center in Beatrice, NE and for some 20 years at the Good Samaritan Center in Auburn, NE. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother and was always willing to help out her children with the care of the grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband Jack L. Spidell of Nebraska City; children: Sheri M. McCall of Auburn, NE, Michael P. Speer of Omaha, NE, Brian L. Spidell and friend Leslie Shutz of Glenshaw, PA, Sandra L. Spidell of Nebr. City and Laura Reese and husband Dave of Nebr. City; 12 grandchildren: Tonya C. McCall and sig. other Travis Watson, Justin McCall, Austin and Zachary Speer, Shande, Trenton and Emma Spidell, Darrick, Brady and Brett Minner, Jeremy Baker and Jaxson Reese; four great-grandchildren: Izayah, Mycah, Kyerrah and Marquese Watson; siblings: Sharon Rathbun, Mary Johnson and husband Clay, Mike Sheridan and wife Linda, and Danny Sheridan all of Omaha, NE; Margaret Singer and husband Paul of Traverse City, Mich., Maureen Pierre of Montclair, NJ and Kelly Sheridan of Lincoln, NE; Numerous nieces and nephews, other family and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her daughter Evelyn Louise "Ev" Spidell on Feb. 6, 2005, an infant brother, brother Patrick, nephew Tony Rathbun and her parents.

Services will be held Tuesday afternoon (March 15) at 2:00 p.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Nebraska City with Fr. Michael McCabe celebrating the Mass. Inurnment will be held at a later time in the Wyuka Cemetery at Nebr. City.

A prayer service will be held Monday evening at 7:00 p.m. at the Gude Mortuary in Nebr. City followed by the family receiving friends.

Memorials may be given to the family.

Charles E. Smith

Age 89 of rural Rock Port, MO passed away on Thursday; March 10, 2011 at the Village Care Center in Maryville, MO. He had been a resident of the care center for seven years.

Charles Edward Smith was born icon on March 8, 1922 in Hamlin County, TN; the son of Plez and Ella (Gregg) Smith. At a young age, he started farming to help his parents.

He was united in marriage to Shirley M. Price on September 19, 1963 at rural Watson, MO. They shared over 47 years of marriage together until his death.

Charles was a lifelong farmer and he had also worked at the former Interstate Nurseries in Hamburg, IA for some 28 years. He was a devoted husband and father always looking after the needs of the family.

He is survived by his wife Shirley Smith of rural Rock Port, MO, a daughter Charlene Smith of Rock Port, MO; one sister Ruth Hayes of Hamburg, IA; brother in law Donald "Corky" Price of Tarkio, MO; his dog that he dearly loved Calimae; numerous nieces and nephews and other family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father Plez Smith, his mother Ella Smith Hartman in 1989, a brother Carroll Smith in 1964; sisters-in-law Ruth Wright in 1986 and Betty Mae Price in 1999; brother-in-law I.B. Hayes in 1983, a nephew Michael Ruelas in 1986 and a niece Rita Price in 2000.

Funeral Services for Charles E. Smith will be held Monday (March 14) at 2:00 p.m. at the Rash-Gude Funeral Home in Hamburg, IA with Pastor Clarence Schaffner officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Olive Cemetery southeast of Hamburg, IA.

The family will greet friends from 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sunday (March 13) at the Rash-Gude Funeral Home in Hamburg.

Memorials may be given to family in lieu of flowers.

Paul E. Stoll

Age 86, of Nebraska City passed away on Sunday; March 6, 2011 at Duff's Friendship Villa in Nebraska City.

He was born icon on October 16, 1924 in Dunbar, NE; the son of Joseph William and Ruth Esther (Williams) Stoll.

He entered the United States Army on December 3, 1943 and served during World War II with the 310th Infantry-78th Division. He was honorably discharged on April 30, 1946. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, a lifetime member of the American Legion , V.F.W., D.A.V. and the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #968 in Nebraska City.

Paul was united in marriage to Marie A. Allen on February 10, 1948 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Nebraska City.

Paul worked for many years at the Nebraska City Utilities and retired from there. He also worked at the G.E. Conkey Company. He was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend.

He is survived by his wife Marie Stoll of Nebraska City; children: Lenis G. Grauf and wife Sharon of Plattsmouth, NE; Linda Sue Johnson of Nebraska City and Brian Stoll and wife Georgette of Nebr. City; Daughter-in-law Theresa Stoll of Omaha, NE; five grandchildren: Heather Grauf, Melissa Stoll, Jason Stoll & wife Jena, Jessica Holland and Bradley Stoll, one great-grandchild Makenzie Stoll; brothers: Clyde Stoll of Nebraska City, Joseph Stoll of Fremont, NE and a sister Mary Ann Dickerson of Beaumont, TX; other family and many friends.

He was preceded in death by a son Paul E. Stoll, Jr.; a son-in-law Charles "Chuck" Johnson; three brothers and five sisters as well as his parents.

Funeral Services for Paul Stoll will be held Thursday morning (March 10) at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary‘s Catholic Church in Nebraska City with Fr. Michael McCabe and Fr. Matthew Rolling officiating; burial will follow in St. Benedict‘s Cemetery with complete military services conducted by the Nebraska Army National Guard Funeral Honors Detail.

The family will greet friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday (3/9) and a Scripture Service will be held at 7:00 p .m. Wednesday evening - all at Gude Mortuary.

Memorials may be given to St. Mary‘s Catholic Church in Nebraska City, NE.

Earl B. Lloyd

Age 83, of Hamburg, IA passed away on Sunday, March 6, 2011 at Duff's Friendship Villa in Nebr. City, NE.

Earl was born icon on March 10, 1927 in Atchison County, MO; the son of Carl B. and Elna (Breedlove) Lloyd. He attended school in Hamburg and graduated from Hamburg High School in 1944. He then entered the United States Army on June 6, 1945 and proudly served his country until his honorable discharge on January 28, 1947. He had attained the rank of Sergeant.

Earl was united in marriage to Barbara Smith on August 8, 1952 in Nebraska City. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 34 years. He was a carrier for 12 of those years and a clerk for the other 22 years. He was a member of the United Trinity Church in Hamburg and the Eagles. He had served on the Hamburg School Board and was a Volunteer Firefighter for 35 years.

One of his greatest loves was fishing and going to Rush Lake every summer. For nearly 60 years Earl and his family would spend summer time at Rush Lake.

He is survived by his wife Barbara Lloyd of Hamburg, IA; children Barney Lloyd; Nancy Bieri and husband David and Steve Lloyd and wife Becky all of Hamburg, IA; 6 grandchildren: Alisha Ettleman & husband Bill; Kelly Ferryman & husband David; Josh Catlett & wife Jamie; Tanner Lloyd; Lacey Wurtele & husband Jason; Dani Gamber & husband Steve; and 7 great-grandchildren: Hayden, Layne, Libby, Seth, Trevor, Grayden and Jade and other family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and 2 brothers: Carl W. Lloyd and Charles H. Lloyd.

Memorials Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 10, 2011 at the Rash-Gude Funeral Home in Hamburg, IA with Fr. Michael McCabe officiating. Inurnment will follow at the Hamburg Cemetery in Hamburg, IA with Military Services conducted by the Hamburg American Legion.

Memorials may be given to the family.

Gena Grace Prater,

Age 51 of Hamburg, IA passed away on Friday morning; March 4, 2011 at Bergan Mercy Medical Center in Omaha, NE.

Gena was born icon on January 5, 1960 at Fairfax, MO; the daughter of John Lewis and Arlene June (Grace) Prater.

She worked at Nishna Productions in Shenandoah, IA and was a member of the United Methodist Church in Hamburg, IA.

She is survived by her mother Arlene Prater of Hamburg, IA; two brothers: Jayson L. Prater and wife Lisa of Milo, IA and Jerald H. Prater and wife Katrina of Platte Woods, MO; three nephews: Jakob, Lucas and William;

Numerous aunts and uncles, other family and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her father on April 17, 2008.

Funeral Services will be held Tuesday morning (March 8) at 11:00 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Hamburg, IA with Rev's Thelma Subramanian and Jan Phillips officiating. Burial will be in the Mt. Olive Cemetery southeast of Hamburg.

The family will greet friends Monday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Rash-Gude Funeral Home in Hamburg, IA.

Memorials may be given to the Hamburg Fire and Rescue Dept. or to the donors favorite charity.
