Lloyd E. Scheer

Age 88 of Nebraska City; formerly of Cook, NE passed away on March 2, 2011 at the Ambassador in Nebraska City.

Lloyd was born icon on August 25, 1922 near Nickerson, NE; the son of Herman Heinrich Edward and Johanna Friedareke (Hilgenkamp) Scheer. He was baptized on Sept. 9, 1922 and confirmed on April 5, 1936 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church north of Arlington, NE. He attended St. Paul's Lutheran School and Brinkman School, both north of Arlington. He then received his high school equivalency certificate in December of 1955.

Lloyd entered the United States Navy on November 11, 1942. He served his boot camp at Great Lakes, IL and then attended Aviation Electrical School for 3 months. He served the Naval Air Transport Squadron at Olathe, KS and then was honorably discharged as an Aviation Electrician's Mate First Class on March 19, 1946. He was a member of the American Legion Bickel-Nelson Post #360 in Cook, NE where he served as Commander, Adjutant and Service Officer.

He was united in marriage to Verona L.C. Oetken on June 22, 1947 at the Immanuel Evan. Lutheran Church in Cook, NE. After their marriage, they lived in Fremont, NE where Lloyd worked as an electrical contractor. In 1950 they moved to Cook, NE where he operated an appliance shop, wiring, heating, and plumbing business. He was appointed Postmaster of Cook in June 1956 and served there for 27 ½ years, before retiring in Jan. 1984 due to health problems. He was a member of the Nat'l Association of Postmasters of the U.S. and served as Nebraska State President in 1979. He also trained Postmasters in the Southeast NE area. He was a member of the National Assoc. of Retired Federal Employees and worked at Gude Mortuary.

Lloyd's religion was a very important part of his life and he was very active in the Cook Community. He was a member of the First Evan. Lutheran Church in Nebr. City. When he lived in Cook, he was a member of Grace Lutheran Church. While a member there, he served as chairman, secretary, financial secretary, and Sunday School Superintendent. He was the Electrician when Grace Lutheran Church was built in 1950. He was a member of the Cook Commercial Club, the Fire Dept., the Village Board, Rescue Squad, Yesterday's Kids and helped with Meals-on-Wheels.

He is survived by his wife Verona of Nebraska City, NE; three children: Loren L. Scheer and wife Mary of Phoenix, AZ, Ralph E. Scheer and wife Kathryn of Cook, NE and Wanda L. Wilnes and husband Douglas of Lincoln, NE; 8 grandchildren: Kevin Scheer & wife Jessica, Kerrie Scheer and husband Anthony Dezilva, Christina Scheer, Gabriel Scheer, Marcus Scheer, Abigail Scheer, Rebecca Scheer and Kasey Jae Wilnes; 3 great-grandchildren: Samantha Scheer, Zachary Scheer and Noah Dezilva; other family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 sisters: Lilly Sperling and Meta Scheer and an infant brother, Harry.

Funeral Services will be held Saturday morning (March 5) at 10:30 a.m. at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Nebraska City, NE with Pastor Bruce Berggren officiating. Graveside interment services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday (March 5) at the Grace Lutheran Cemetery near Cook, NE with military honors conducted by the US Navy Funeral Honors Detail.

Open visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday (Mar. 4) at the Gude Mortuary and an hour prior to the services on Saturday at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Nebraska City or the Grace Lutheran Church in Cook, NE.

Ralph N. Nelsen

Age 87, of Nebr. City, NE passed away early Wednesday morning, March 2, 2011 at The Monarch in Lincoln, NE.

Ralph was born icon on June 20, 1923 in Nebraska City, NE; the son of James J. and Laura C. Nelsen. He attended school in Nebraska City and graduated from Nebraska City High School with the Class of 1940. He joined the United States Navy on Oct. 15, 1942 and served his country during WWII. He attained the rank of Chief Petty Officer. He was honorably discharged on October 27, 1945.

He was united in marriage to Leatha Davis on September 21, 1946 at First Lutheran Church in Nebr. City. He was a truck driver and heavy equipment operator for Allied Chemical for 31 years. He retired in 1985.

He was a member of First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Nebr. City, the Nebr. City Eagles and a life-time member of the American Legion.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Leatha Nelsen of Lincoln, NE; children David R. Nelsen and wife Nancy of Lincoln, NE; Jacqueline L. Sanks and husband Randy of Lincoln, NE; 3 grandchildren: Tara Mata and husband Fidel of Decatur, IL; Nathan Sanks and wife Jaime of Lincoln, NE and Sherry Nelsen-Smith and husband Charli of Lake Havasu City, AZ; 6 great-grandchildren: Athena Mata, Trinity Mata; Cordelia Mata, Kaden Sanks, Calissa Sanks and Charli Smith; sister Mildred Stahlhut of Nebr. City and other family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and 3 brothers: Roy, Melvin and Howard.

Funeral Services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, March 4, 2011 at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Nebr. City with Pastor Bruce Berggren officiating; burial will follow the services at Wyuka Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Navy Funeral Honors Detail.

The family will greet friends Thursday evening (3/3) at Gude Mortuary in Nebr. City from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Memorials may be given to the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Nebraska City.

Herbert Paul McMullen

Age 90, of Riverton, IA passed away on Sunday, Feb. 27, 2011 at the Ambassador in Sidney, IA.

Herbert Paul, son of Claude and Estella (Welchans) McMullen was born icon in Locust Grove, Fremont County, IA on September 15, 1920. He paternal grandparents were Amos and Nora (Adell) McMullen of Valley Falls, KS and his maternal grandparents were D.L. and Mary (Green) Welchans of Madison Township, Fremont County, IA. Paul had one brother, Rex Loyd, who died at the age of six months.

Paul attended Fairview County School for two years, when his family moved to their farm home southeast of Riverton in 1930. He attended grade school where his mother was a teacher. He attended Riverton High School and graduated in 1938. He farmed with his father until he retired and then farmed by himself. He also worked part time for the Shull Hardware in Riverton.

Paul and Lois Jean (Reed) were married on September 18, 1944. Paul went to work as a Sub Rural Mail Carrier in 1952. In 1978 he was appointed as Rural Carrier. They lived at the Maxey property in Riverton for 33 years, before moving to the farm.

Paul built a workshop and spent many hours working with wood making gifts for many friends.

Paul a member of the Riverton United Methodist Church where he held many offices. Paul was a 60 year member and Past Master of Riverton Masonic Lodge 481. He was the secretary for 40 years. He belonged to the Eastern Star Association of the Sidney Chapter. He was a retired fireman and belonged to the Community Club and Silver & Gold Senior Citizens..

On September 17, 2007, Paul and Jean celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary. They celebrated part of their 50th Anniversary in Niagara Falls on their way to Maine. Paul was very proud to say he was able to visit 23 of the states of America. Paul has been very helpful at the Southern Loess Hills Welcome Center where he helps people map out their trips.

In addition to his brother, Paul was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Jean McMullen on October 28, 2009. He had four loves in his long life: his mother, his dear wife Jean, and Fritz and Lady.

He is survived by numerous nieces and nephew, other family and his "adopted son" Randy Schaeffer and wife Becky of Riverton who took care of Paul for many years.

Funeral Services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, March 4, 2011 at the United Methodist Church in Riverton, IA with Revs. Jaye Johnson and Norman Walter officiating. Burial will follow at the Riverton Cemetery in Riverton, IA.

The family will greet friends from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday (3/3) at the Shull-Gude Funeral Home in Riverton, IA. Masonic Services will be held at 7:00 p.m. Thursday (3/3) at the Shull-Gude Funeral Home.

Memorials may be given to the United Methodist Church in Riverton, IA.

Betty Lea Holman

Age 79, of Hamburg, IA passed away on Saturday, February 26, 2011 at the Univ. of Nebr. Medical Center in Omaha, NE.

Betty was born icon on March 7, 1931 in Randolph, IA; the daughter of Lee W. and Bertha E. (Cooper) James. She attended school in Randolph and graduated from Randolph High School in 1949. She was united in marriage to Robert R. Rucker on March 13, 1949 in Rock Port, MO. Robert preceded her in death in 1957. She later married Richard O. "Scotty" Holman on Sept. 4, 1965 in Sidney, IA.

Betty was the Supervisor of Laundry and Housekeeping at Grape Community Hospital for many years. She was a member of the Methodist Church in Sidney, IA.

She is survived by her children: Gwendolyn McMurray of Denton, TX and Mindy Schaeffer and husband Terry of Sidney, IA; four grandchildren: Christopher Rasmussen; Leyla Massengale and significant other Chad Perry; Lindsay Schaeffer and significant other Keith Nelson and Alexander Schaeffer; six great-grandchildren: Brittney Rasmussen; Jensen Massengale; Trey Massengale; Gabby Massengale; Chayla Perry and Owen Nelson; sister-in-law Marilyn Smith and husband Wayne of Sidney, IA; life-long best friend Bev York of Thurman, IA; nieces, nephews and many friends.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents; her husband's; a son William Lee Rucker in 1980 and a brother Gerald Wake, Sr.

Graveside Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 2, 2011 at the Sidney Cemetery in Sidney, IA with Rev. Jan Phillips officiating. Burial will follow the services.

The family will greet friends from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday (3/1) evening at the Rash-Gude Funeral Home in Hamburg, IA.

Memorials may be given to Grape Community Hospital in Hamburg, IA.

W. Joan Stockstell

Age 73, of rural Rock Port, MO passed away on Sunday, July 10, 2011 at the Gardenview Care Center in Shenandoah, IA.

Joan was born icon on August 14, 1937 in Gillette, WY; the daughter of Carl and Dorothy (Study) Ward. She attended school in Riverton, IA. She was united in marriage to Roy A. Stockstell on November 27, 1954 in Farragut, IA. She was baptized at the Assembly of God Church in Tarkio, MO on June 14, 1972.

She worked at the Interstate Nurseries, Stoner Drug and American Meter in Nebr. City, NE where she retired in 1996. She was an active member of the Assembly of God Church in Hamburg, IA

She is survived by her three children: Penny Ann Blank, Russell D. Stockstell and wife Sandy and Mark A. Stockstell and wife Tara all of Hamburg, IA; 10 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren; siblings: Lonnie Ward and wife Verma of Anderson, IA; Cecil Ward of Riverton, IA; Darwin Ward and wife Betty of Evans, CO; Roger Ward and wife Bonnie of Sidney, IA; Joyce Philbrick and husband Jim of Gillette, WY and Charles Ward and wife Rosemary of Riverton, IA and other family and friends.

Joan was preceded in death by her husband Roy on May 26, 2006 and an infant brother and infant sister.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, July 14, 2011 at the Rash-Gude Funeral Home in Hamburg, IA with Pastor James Burnette officiating; burial will follow at the Hamburg Cemetery in Hamburg, IA.

Open Visitation will be held from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 13, 2011 at the funeral home.

Memorials may be given to the Assembly of God Church in Hamburg in her memory.

Donald L. Eggers

Age 78 of Riverton, IA passed away on Saturday; July 9, 2011 at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, NE.

He was born icon on July 28, 1932 in South Dakota; the youngest of eight sons of Edward and Louise (Krausman) Eggers. He moved to Riverton in 1951where he finished high school graduating with the class of 1952

He was united in marriage to Florence Irene Ward on May 23, 1953 at Sidny, IA and to the union three children were born: Debora, Kenny and Carrie.

In August of 1953, Don entered the US Army during the Korean War. He faithfully and honorably served his country until his discharge in June of 1955. During his time in service, he was a Cook.

Don began his career with Iowa Power in 1953 and retired from the company (Mid American Energy) in 1992 after 40 years of service. He was a member of the Riverton Volunteer Fire Dept., Sidney, IA American Legion and served in various capacities in the community including as a Little League Baseball Coach, Boy Scout Master for Troop #211 where he fashioned five Eagle Scouts. He also served on the Riverton School Board and on the Riverton/Farragut School Board. He enjoyed fishing and hunting, farming, antique tools, restoring tractors and driving his pickup around town, but spending time with his grandchildren was his greatest love.

He is survived by his wife Florence Eggers of Riverton, IA; children: Kenny Eggers and wife Brenda of Riverton and Carrie McQueen and husband Jeff of Riverton; son-in-law Gale Fengel of Riverton; Eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other family and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his daughter Debora Fengel on September 23, 2004, his seven brothers and his parents.

Funeral Services will be held Wednesday morning at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Riverton with Rev. Jaye Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in the Riverton Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Sidney, IA American Legion Post.

The family will greet friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Shull-Gude Funeral Home in Riverton.

Memorials may be given to the Riverton Fire/Rescue Dept.

June M. Martin,

Age 70 of Denver, CO; formerly of Nebraska City passed away at her home on July 1, 2011.

She was born icon on October 6, 1940 at St. Mary's Hospital in Nebraska City, NE; the daughter of Marshall and Hazel (Horner) Bates. She attended school in Nebr. City. She was united in marriage to Lewis W. Martin on May 24, 1965 at Beatrice, NE and he preceded her in death on November 5, 2005.

June worked for some 20 years at American Meter Company in Nebraska City and retired from there. She later worked for Public Service of Colorado where she also retired from.

She is survived by her five children: Debbie Cohn and husband Steve of Littleton, CO; Debbi Hartley and husband Craig of Nebr. City, NE; Bobbi Teten and fiance Jody Hermann of Nebr. City; Lewis "Buck" Martin of Edgemont, SD and Eric "Rocky" Martin and wife Melissa of Lincoln, NE; 13 grandchildren: Aaron Cohn, Drew and Paige Hartley, Jordan and Dalton Teten, Dani Simrell, April Stukenholtz, Kayla, Baron, Aaron, Kolton, Ambryia and Caleb Martin; two great-grandchildren: Adison and Zoey Stukenholtz; brothers: Charles "Sonny" Bates and wife Becky of Nebr. City, Lynn Ericson and wife Jan of Lincoln, NE; sister Julie Henderson of Sidney, IA; sister-in-law Sharon Bates of Nebr. City; other family and many friends.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by an infant grandson Brandon Lewis Martin and brother Marshall "Bud" Bates.

Funeral services will be held Saturday morning; July 9, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. at the Gude Mortuary in Nebraska City with Fr. Michael McCabe officiating. Burial will be in the Wyuka Cemetery at Nebr. City.

The family will greet friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday evening at Gude Mortuary in Nebr. City.

Memorials may be given to the Nebraska City Fire Dept. Museum or Hearts United for Animals.

Paul E. Barker

Age 90, of Bellevue, NE (formerly Nebr. City) passed away on Monday, July 4, 2011 at the Bellevue Medical Center in Bellevue, NE.

Paul was born icon on March 10, 1921 in Council Bluffs, IA; the son of Edward and Paula (Goos) Barker. He graduated from Louisville High School in 1938 and then attended Nebraska School of Business in Lincoln. He joined the United States Air Force on July 22, 1942 and proudly served his country during World War II until his honorable discharge on Oct. 17, 1945.

Paul was united in marriage to Vada L. Brothers on December 21, 1947 in LaPlatte, NE and to this union two children were born: Nancy and Steve. Paul worked at Morton House in the purchasing department for many years until the plant closed in the 1980's. He was a member of the American Legion and the Nebraska City Elks.

He is survived by his children Nancy Moyer and husband Phil of Bellevue, NE and Steve Barker and wife Roxie of Nebr. City, NE; four grandchildren: Cameron, Shannon, Patrick and Darin; two great-grandchildren: Jacob and Joshua; and other family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife Vada on September 14, 2007.

Graveside Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, July 7, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at LaPlatte Cemetery in LaPlatte, NE with military services conducted by the Offutt Air Force Base Honor Guard.

The family will greet friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday evening (7/6) at Gude Mortuary in Nebraska City.

Curtis E. Hensley

Age 71, of Rural Sidney, IA passed away on Sunday, June 26, 2011 at Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs, IA.

Curtis was born icon on January 6, 1940 in Jasper, AR; the son of Alec and Ollie Lewis. His family moved to Missouri where he attended grade school and then they moved to Farragut, IA where he attended elementary and high school. He graduated from Farragut High School with the class of 1958.

On August 24, 1957 he was united in marriage to Janice Aspedon. They were married 53 years. The couple had three sons: Mike, Jeff and Tim.

He worked for the United Postal Service before retiring. His love of horses was his life long dream. He raised and sold quarter horses. His entire life he loved and truly enjoyed all his grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his son Mike, his parents and a brother Willis.

Curtis is survived by his wife Janice; two sons: Jeff Hensley of Nebr. City, NE and Tim Hensley and wife Sheli of Elkhorn, NE; daughter-in-law Cheryl of Omaha, NE; sisters: Macel Tuck and husband Floyd of Shenandoah, IA, Wanda Exceen and husband Jim of Maryville, MO; brother Wayne Hensley and wife Anni of Riverton, IA; 20 grandchildren and great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, other family and many friends.

Funeral Services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 29, 2011 at the Church of Christ in Riverton, IA with Travis Hensely officiating; burial will follow at the Riverton Cemetery in Riverton, IA with military honors conducted by the Hamburg, IA American Legion Post #156.

The family will greet friends on Tuesday evening (6/28) from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Shull-Gude Funeral Home in Riverton, IA.

Memorials may be directed to the Curtis Hensley family.
