Phyllis L. (Hudson) Arnold

Age 72, of Eagle, NE (formerly Nebr. City) passed away on Friday, May 20, 2011 at St. Elizabeth's Regional Medical Center in Lincoln, NE.

Phyllis was born icon on May 17, 1939 at her parents home near Reamsville, KS. She was the seventh of nine children born icon to Earl and Gracie (Rust) Hudson. Phyllis graduated from Franklin High School in Franklin, NE with the class of 1957.

She married Darrell L. (Benny) Arnold on July 5, 1958 in Nelson, NE. Together they raised their two children Kelly and Brent in Nebraska City. Phyllis worked many jobs, however her true calling was being a wife, mother, and grandmother. She enjoyed gardening, tending to her flowers, quilting, and many outdoor activities, particularly when they included her family. In 1994 Phyllis and Bennie moved to Eagle, NE. She was an active member of the Methodist Church in Eagle. She was involved in many fund raising events, assisting less fortunate people, and enjoyed the fellowship of the church.

Phyllis is survived by her husband of fifty three years Darrell (Benny) Arnold of Eagle, NE; daughter Kelly Holland and husband Mike of Nebraska City, NE; son Brent Arnold of Lincoln, NE; grandchildren: Ross Cullin of Millard, NE; Rusty Arnold, Cody Arnold, Cierra Sterling of Lincoln, NE and Jessica Holland of Myrtle Beach, SC; great grandson Demari Arnold of Lincoln, NE; sisters: Alma Konvalin and husband John of Kittitas, WA; Mary Calhoon of Yakima, WA; Carol Johnson and husband Jim of Tieton, WA and Sue Fordahl of Yakima, WA and other family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Loyal Hudson, Gene Hudson and Ralph Hudson; infant sister Maybelle Hudson; brothers-in-law Dennis Fordahl and Richard Calhoon; sisters-in-law: Evelyn Hudson, Rita Hudson and Verna Hudson.

Funeral Services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 25, 2011 at the Eagle Methodist Church in Eagle, NE with the Rev. Chuck Cornwell officiating. Burial will follow at Eagle Cemetery in Eagle, NE. The casket will remain closed to honor Phyllis' wishes.

Memorials may be given to the Methodist Church in Eagle, NE or Otoe County Relay For Life.

Norma J. Vogel

Age 77 of Nebraska City passed away on Saturday; May 21, 2011 at St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Lincoln, NE.

She was born icon on May 29, 1933 in Nebraska City, NE; daughter of Edwin James and Emma Sophie (Bolte) Skillett.

She was united in marriage to Howard R. Vogel on May 15, 1955 at Nebraska City, NE.

Norma was a housewife and homemaker and a loving wife, mother, grandmother and sister. She had also worked at the Nebraska City Schools Hot Lunch Progam and for Dr. Brown at the former Brown's Hospital in Nebraska City. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Nebraska City and served on the Election Board for many years. She also taught ceramic classes for many years and enjoyed sewing, crocheting and quilting and was very artistic and talented in these areas.

She is survived by her two sons: Steven J. Vogel and Jolene of Nebr. City, NE and Ronald E. Vogel and Nancy of Millard, NE; two grandchildren: Alexander and Elizabeth; a sister Darlene McCauley and husband Vernon of Richland Center, Wisc.; other family and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband Howard on December 6, 2001, her son Darin Vogel on August 19, 1984 and a brother Jim Skillett.

Funeral Services will be held Wednesday afternoon (May 25) at 2:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Nebraska City with Rev. Jeff Kelley officiating. Burial will follow in the Wyuka Cemetery at Nebraska City.

The family will greet friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday (May 24) at Gude Mortuary.

A memorial fund is being established in her memory.

Leroy (Dick) Sudman

Age 81, of rural Brock, Julian, was born icon January 15th, 1930 in rural Avoca, NE, to parents of John and Marie (Mary) Bucholtz, Sudman. He was one of seven children. He passed away May 16th at Auburn hospital at age 81 years, 4 months and 1 day. He was baptized at North Branch Church in Avoca, NE in 1930. He attended elementary and high school in Avoca, NE and graduated with the class of 1947. He met Amelia (Pat) Forker, the love of his life, at a dance in Tabor, Iowa in 1948. They were happily married December 11, 1951 at North Branch Church in Avoca, NE. They enjoyed many years of dancing and life together. He later joined the United States Army- Air Force October of 1948, with his future brother-in-law Leo Carr. They served one year active duty, then recalled during the Korean War March 10th, 1951. He was honorably discharged in July of 1952.

Dick was an avid sports fan, he enjoyed watching his kids, grandkids and now great-grandkids compete. He operated a Bulldozer for 59 years, all the way up to one month prior to his death. He truly loved his work, and was always on the job unless he and his family were involved in other activities. Dick enjoyed dancing, playing cards, boating, camping, fishing and the Nebraska Huskers and was always donating his work to areas of the community.

Dick was a member of the First Lutheran Church of Nebraska City for 54 years and been the member of the Ushering team since the new church was built in 1959. He was a lifetime member of the Nebraska City Elks and 50plus year member of Nebraska City Eagles #968 American Legion Post #8 for 57 years and a member of U.C.T and L.I.C.A.

He was preceded in death by his mother Marie and father John and Grandfather George and Brothers George (Bud), Ralph and Sister Helen Shallenberger.

He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. He always put family first. He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife Amelia (Pat) of 59 and a half years, Son Randy and Wife Robin of Nemaha, Daughter Vicki Simon and Husband Randall of rural Brock, Julian. Grandchildren Technical Sergeant Shane Sudman and Wife Staff Sergeant Tandra of Colorado Springs, CO, Shannon Snyder of Auburn, Shauna Betts and Husband Brian of Auburn, Trisha and Joshua Adams and Kaitlynn Simon of rural Brock, Julian, Great-Grandchildren Kaitlin Sudman, Courtney and Hailey Snyder and Kyran Henley, Waylon Sherman and Lauren and Brayden Inman, Sister Norma Burner and Husband Dean of Avoca, Dolores (Tootie) and Husband Leo Carr of Lincoln, and Brother Wilman and Wife Shirley of Omaha and Sister-in-law Louise Sudman of Bellevue many Nieces, Nephews, cousins and other relatives and many, MANY friends. He will be greatly missed by all.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, May 23, 2011 at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Nebr. City. Burial will follow at Wyuka Cemetery in Nebr. City with Military Honors conducted by the United States Air Force Funeral Honors Detail.

The family will greet friends from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Sunday (5/22) at Gude Mortuary in Nebr. City. Memorials may be given to the First Evan. Lutheran Church in Nebr. City.

Roger E. McCreary

Beloved husband, father, step-father, grandpa and great-grandpa, Roger passed away at the Ambassador Retirement Center in Nebraska City.

After graduating from Benson High School in Omaha, Roger attended Omaha University. He and his first wife, Virginia McLucas, were married in Omaha where Roger worked as a professional photographer with Rhinehart Marsden Studio. He also worked for Pioneer Paint before moving to Nebraska City where he owned and operated the Otoe Paint store for twenty-five years.

Roger's civic activities were many, including Junior Chamber of Commerce, Street Commissioner for fourteen years, President and Honoree of the Optimist Club, various Lutheran and Methodist church boards, trolley manager, Elks Club, and the River Country Industrial Development Corporation.

Roger married Betty Lou Bybee in 1969 after the death of his first wife, Virginia. He loved to spend time with his family as well as fishing, painting, traveling, gardening, and socializing with his many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Wilma McCreary, his wife, Virginia McLucas, adopted son, David, sons in law, Doug Hatten and Galen Kriesel and grandson Ronnie Barnes.

He is survived by his wife Betty, daughter Marcia Kriesel, daughter and son-in-law Phyllis and Brian Usher, stepdaughter and husband Cheryl and Warren White, stepson and wife Cliff and Diane Bybee, stepson and wife Scott and Donna Bybee, grandson and wife Wes and Darlene Kriesel, granddaughter Marielle Kriesel, grandson and wife Jeff and Melody Hatten, granddaughter and husband Amy and Jess Becker, granddaughter and husband, Tammy and Mark Ravens, grandson Steve Barnes, granddaughter Lindsay Wielfeld, grandson Brian Bybee, grandsons Justin and Shawn Bybee and many great grandchildren.

A memorial service honoring Roger McCreary will be held Saturday, May 21st, 2011 at 1:30pm at the First United Methodist Church in Nebraska City with Rev. Jeff Kelley officiating.

Inurnment will be at a later date.

Paul Gregory Doiel, lovingly known as Greg to his family and friends

Age 54, died on Saturday May 14, 2011 at Duff's Friendship Villa in Nebraska City, NE.

Greg was born icon on October 19, 1956 in Fairfax, MO; the son of Walter Doiel and Rhetta Jean (Gregg) Dyke. He attended school in Hamburg, IA and graduated from Hamburg High School with the class of 1974. He then attended Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, MO where he earned his B.S. in geology.

He was united in marriage to Denese McNair in September of 1981 at Hutchinson, KS They have two children: Kerry Williams and Tessa (Doiel) Samarripas. The couple was later divorced.

Greg was a geologist and worked for various companies in Oklahoma, Texas and Wyoming. He enjoyed camping with his brother Pat and writing songs and singing with his brother Matt. He also enjoyed painting, making pottery and reading.

He is survived by his children: Kerry Williams of Denton, TX and Tessa Samarripas and husband Anthony of Plano, TX; his mother Jean Dyke of Hamburg, IA; father Walter Doiel and wife Sandy of Council Bluffs, IA; siblings: Patrick A. Doiel of Fruita, CO, Leigh A. Calfee and husband Carl of Nebr. City; Cindy Francis of Trumbull, CT and Shelly Lautenbaugh and husband Scott of Omaha, NE; nieces and nephews: Ashley, Trent, Luke, Dwayne, Victoria, Spencer, Kyle, and Nathan, and other family and friends.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Matthew Dyke, his maternal grandparents Paul and Anna Mae Gregg, and his paternal grandparents Walter, Sr. and Colleen Doiel.

Visitation with Greg's family will be held Wednesday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Rash-Gude Funeral Home in Hamburg, IA. A private graveside family service, with Rev. Rob Conner officiating will be held at a later date.

Memorials may be given to the family in Greg's memory.

Juan (Jack) Manuel Najar, Sr.

Age 67, a resident of San Jose, CA entered into rest on May 7, 2011.

He was born icon in Johnson Mines, AZ on May 6, 1944; the beloved son of Guillermo and Jacova Najar.

Loving father to Juan and Kim Najar. Devoted brother to Bill Najar and the late Federico Najar and Katie Najar.

Devoted friend and companion to Lynne Rodriguez and son Eric. He spent the last 35 years of his life living with Lynne (Hawthorne) Rodriguez.

Jack worked for PG&E for 38 years and has enjoyed his retired life for the past ten years.

Jack was an amazing person, irreplaceable in the hearts of everyone who knew him. He will be truly missed more than he will know.

Graveside services will be held Wednesday (May 18) at 1:00 p.m. at the Wyuka Cemetery in Nebraska City; burial will follow the services.

Jacqueline C. Ryan

Age 87 of Nebraska City, NE passed away on Saturday; May 7, 2011 at BryanLGH west Medical Center in Lincoln, NE. She moved to Nebr. City with her husband James in 2002 after living for many years in North Platte, NE.

She was born icon on September 13, 1923 at North Platte, NE; the daughter of Carl Edward and Henrietta Aller (Young) Simon. She attended school in North Platte and graduated from St. Patrick's High School with the class of 1940.

She was a housewife and homemaker to her husband and eight children. She also worked at the Hall Insurance Agency, Dixon Jewelers and at Woolworth's in North Platte, NE. She also volunteered many hours to the North Platte Canteen during World War II. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Nebraska City.

She was united in marriage to James Francis Ryan on February 8, 1943 in North Platte, NE and to this union eight children were born: Linda, Timothy, Patrick, Theresa, Elaine, Janet, Christina and Carrie.

The couple shared over 68 years of their lives together until her death.

She is survived by her husband James Ryan of Nebr. City; children: Linda Lutz and husband Larry of Parker, CO, Timothy Ryan and wife Mary Jo of North Platte, NE, Patrick Ryan of Grants, NM, Theresa Ryan of Goodyear, AZ, Elaine Lehmkuhler and husband Paul of Dodge City, KS, Janet O'Neil and husband Scott of Dunbar, NE, Christina Reitz and husband Daniel of Eagle River, AK and Carrie Brown and husband Evan of North Platte, NE; 13 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren; sisters: Mary Haigler of Casper, WY, Regis Bliss of Ft. Collins, CO, Rose Ann Ott of Lakewood, CO, and Patricia Sexton of North Platte, NE; numerous nieces and nephews, other family and friends.

She was preceded in death by a sister Veronica Heelan, a brother William Simon and an infant brother Robert Simon.

Funeral Services will be held Thursday (May 12) at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Nebr. City with Fr. Michael McCabe celebrating the Mass. Graveside interment services will be held on Friday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. at the Ft. McPherson National Cemetery at Maxwell, NE.

A rosary will be recited Wednesday evening (May 11) at 6:00 p.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Nebr. City.

Memorials may be given to the Lourdes School Expansion Project, St. Patrick's Catholic Church in North Platte, NE or the Otoe County Veterans Van.

Dennis D. Driever

Age 68 of Nebraska City passed away at his home on Saturday; May 7, 2011.

He was born icon on January 2, 1943 at Hamburg, IA; the son of Donald Carl and Lyvah Lorraine (Wilson) Driever. Following Lyvah's deth in 1943, Dennis and older sister Mary Jane lived with their paternal grandparents, while Carl served in the Navy during World War II. Carl returned home after the death of his own father in 1945 to raise his children. In 1946 Carl married Dorothy Irwin, giving Dennis a mother and also welcoming two more sisters over the next 7 years.

Growing up Dennis attended Sidney Community Schools. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and hanging out with friends.

On December 22, 1962, Dennis was united in marriage to Connie Wilton. He and Connie were married for 28 years, and remained close friends. Connie remains a large part of Dennis' family today.

Dennis had a love for cars and continued this passion by working in the Auto Body Repair Business. In his later years he drove a cement truck for Concrete Industries. Following open heart surgery and staff infection, rendering him unable to work, Dennis retired in 2004.

Throughout his life Dennis usually had a dog. Several canines made their way into his heart. The latest of these was "Buddy" who was rescued from a frozen snow bank by Dennis 2 years ago and they became close companions.

Dennis was a 49 year member of the Nebraska City Eagles Club where he served as President at one time. Dennis or Denny, as he was affectionately called by his many friends, was outgoing and easy to talk to.

He will be welcomed to Heaven by his mother Lyvah, his father Carl, mother Dorothy; sister Delores Ann Conyac and niece Carol Ann Hinkle.

Remaining to miss him are sisters: Mary Jane Hinkle and husband Kenny of Omaha, NE; Donna Walker and husband Gary of Sidney, IA; brother-in-law Criss Conyac of Coin, IA; good friend Connie Driever of Nebr. City and of course "Buddy"; 4 nephews: Todd and Sylvia Walker and their daughter Marissa of Temple, TX; Trent and Sandra Walker and their children Chris and Caleb of Glenwood, IA; Terry and Carly Walker and their son Carsten of Snyder, NE and Jeff Hinkle of Council Bluffs, IA; 4 nieces: Alesa, Callie and Dana Conyac of Shenandoah, IA and Carla and Randy Gardner of Arapahoe, NE and many, many dear friends and other relatives.

Services will be held Thursday (May 12) at 2:00 p.m. at the Gude Mortuary in Nebraska City with Pastor Nancy Profit officiating. Inurnment will follow in the Sidney Cemetery at Sidney, IA.

The family will greet friends from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday evening at Gude Mortuary.

U. Maxine Pierce

Age 89, of Nebraska City, NE passed away on Wednesday, August 10, 2011 at the Golden Living Center in Nebr. City.

Maxine was born icon on June 12, 1922 in Primrose, NE; the daughter of Lyle and Mabel I. (Brown) Arthur. She attended school in Pawnee City, NE and graduated from Pawnee City High School in 1939. She was united in marriage to Glen George Pierce on April 10, 1941 in Pawnee City, NE. He preceded her in death on August 25, 1989.

Maxine was a housewife and homemaker and also worked as a housekeeper for Betty Palmtag for many years. She was a member of the Calvary Community Church in Nebr. City and a life member of the D.A.V. Auxiliary.

Maxine is survived by her four children: Ronald Pierce and wife Sally; Jerry Pierce and wife Kathy; Sandra Borrego and husband Raul all of Nebr. City, NE and Peggy Blevins and husband Raymond of Washington, UT; 8 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren and 15 great-great grandchildren; three sisters-in-law: Nadine Arthur and Nina Arthur both of Nebraska City and Hazel Arthur of Jonesboro, TN; other family and friends.

In addition to her husband Glen, she was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers and a sister.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, August 15, 2011 at Gude Mortuary in Nebr. City with Rev. Norman Anderson of Calvary Community Church officiating. Burial will follow at Wyuka Cemetery in Nebr. City.

The family will greet friends on Sunday (8/14) from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the mortuary.

Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society or the Calvary Community Church in Nebr. City.
