Mable H. Hunt

Age 97, formerly of Lorton and Dunbar, NE died on July 14, 2011 at the Ambassador in Nebr. City.

Mable was born icon to Albert and Orilla (Kreider) Printz on February 24, 1914 in Avoca, NE. She was a graduate of Weeping Water High School in 1931 and later attended Peru State Teacher's College where she earned her bachelors degree. She then received her Masters degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She taught elementary school for 23 years, retiring in 1979 from Nebraska City Public Schools where she was teaching 5th Grade at Hayward.

She married Orval L. Hunt on October 21, 1933 in Weeping Water, NE and to this union three daughters were born: Patricia, Shirley and Sally. She was a member of the Dunbar Presbyterian Church and a former member of Delta Kappa Gamma Teachers Sorority.

She is survived by daughters: Patricia A. Draeger and husband Arnold of Dunbar, NE; Shirley M. Wright and husband Jim of Dunbar, NE and Sally J. Stubbendieck and husband Wendell of Lincoln, NE; 11 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and 7 great great-grandchildren; a sister Anna Marie Roberts of Nebr. City, NE and other family and friends.

Mable was preceded in death by her husband Orval on January 13, 1969, her parents, three brothers: Albert E., Cleo S. and Peter D. Printz; and sister Alberta "Jackie" Scott.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, July 18, 2011 at the Dunbar Presbyterian Church in Dunbar, NE with Andrew DeGolyer and Wendell Stubbendieck officiating. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery in Weeping Water, NE.

The family will greet friends on Sunday evening (7/17) from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Gude Mortuary in Nebr. City.

Memorials may be directed to the family for donation to charities of their choice.

LaVonne Elizabeth (LaForce) Thompson

Age 83, of Nebr. City passed away on Monday, July 11, 2011 at her home in Nebraska City, NE. She moved to Nebraska City in 1967.

LaVonne was born icon on December 7, 1927 in Grand Forks, ND; the daughter of Mel and Clara (Running) LaForce. She attended school in Grand Forks. She was united in marriage to James L. Thompson on May 24, 1947 in Grand Forks, ND and to this union four children were born: William, Lynne, Robert and Kathy.

She was a housewife and homemaker and was a loving wife, mother, grandmother. She was affectionately known to her family and many friends at "Pee-Wee".

She is survived by her children William Thompson and wife Darlene of Topeka, KS; Lynne Lacy of Nebr. City, NE; Robert Thompson and wife Norma of Lincoln, NE; Kathy Hammer and husband Dexter of Pensacola, FL; 9 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren; a sister Beverly Yearkey of Grand Forks, ND and other family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James, on October 17, 2007 and a sister Marian Wilson.

Memorial Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 16, 2011 at Gude Mortuary in Nebr. City; burial will follow at Wyuka Cemetery in Nebr. City.

Terrence Alan Sjulin

Age 64 of Independence, MO; formerly of Hamburg, IA passed away on August 25, 2011, succumbing to mesothelioma.

Terry was born icon on March 1, 1947, In Hamburg, Iowa. Terry was the first of three sons born icon to John F. "Ted" Sjulin and Marjorie Jean Brown Sjulin. Terry attended Hamburg public schools and participated in band, football, track, wrestling, and student government. After high school graduation in 1965, Terry enrolled at Iowa State University to study horticulture. Terry's college education was interrupted by military service with Lima Company, 3rd Battalion, 5th Regiment, of the US Marines in the Vietnam War. In Vietnam, Terry was a radio operator and earned a purple heart for wounds he received in combat. After military service, Terry returned to Iowa State University and completed his degree in horticulture.

In 1967, Terry married Sheila Collins and began a family with daughter Jill Marie Sjulin, followed by son Jason Randall Sjulin. Terry established his home in Hamburg and began his lifelong profession in the nursery industry, working at Interstate Nurseries and at Sjulin Nurseries. Terry was in charge of nursery operations and was involved in every aspect of the nursery business from propagation through product delivery. If anything needed attention, whether it was repairing an irrigation system, restoring a failing cold storage building, or solving a computer or software problem, Terry would figure it out and fix it.

At the same time that he was involved in the nursery business, Terry was also actively involved in the community and with long distance running. He coached baseball and he served on the boards of the Hamburg School District and the Fremont County Farm Bureau. He ran almost every day and entered and completed 33 marathons, qualifying for the Boston Marathon twice by breaking 3 hours, once at age 40. Terry then coupled his community involvement and his running by organizing and hosting the Tri-State 10,000, an event which became a Hamburg Popcorn Day tradition.

In 2001, Terry married Linda Miller of Hamburg. Terry and Linda worked together at Sjulin Nurseries and later at Klupenger Nursery in Oregon, at Loma Vista Nursery in Ottawa, Kansas, and at Schwope Brothers Tree Farm near Independence, Missouri.

Terry is survived by his wife Linda, by his children Jill of Corning, Iowa, and Jason of Jonesboro, Arkansas; by his brothers Jim of Portland, Oregon, and Tom of Aromas, California, and their families; and by Linda's children John Tracy Miller of Clarksville, Tennessee, and David Miller of Lincoln, Nebraska. Also surviving are Linda's grandchildren Russell, Trace, Anthony, Megan, and Ashley.

Funeral Services will be held Monday (Aug. 29) at 10:00 a.m. at the Baptist Church in Hamburg, IA with Pastor Tom Beutler officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Olive Cemetery with military services conducted by the Hamburg American Legion Post #156.

The family will greet friends on Sunday (Aug. 28) from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Rash-Gude Funeral Home in Hamburg, IA.

Memorials may be given to the Hamburg American Legion Post #156.

Laquita J. Rubenking

Age 68, of Nebraska City, NE passed away on Thursday, August 25, 2011 at the Univ. of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, NE.

Laquita was born icon on July 12, 1943 in Peru, NE; the daughter of Orville C. and Ellen P. (Applegate) Allgood. She attended school and graduated from the Peru High School with the class of 1961. She then attended Beauty School in Omaha. She was united in marriage to Roy R. Rubenking on January 20, 1963 in Peru, NE and to this union two children were born: Lori and Marvin.

Laquita was a hairdresser for many years and was also an employee of the Nebraska School for the Visually Handicapped in Nebraska City where she served as a houseparent to the students that resided at the school.

She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Roy R. Rubenking of Nebr. City; children: Lori Devine and husband Terry of Lincoln, NE and Marvin Rubenking and wife Heather of Waverly, NE; 4 grandchildren: Chet, Amanda, Caden and Carley; 1 great-grandson: Trayton; siblings: Darrell Allgood and wife Jan; Marty Allgood; Ron Allgood and wife Candy; Deb Sammons all of Nebr. City; Pearl Rainforth and husband Dave of Lincoln, NE and Arnie Allgood and wife Kathy of Nacogdoches, TX; two sisters-in-law: Mary Allgood of Nebr. City and Shirley Halpern of Lincoln, NE and numerous other family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her father on May 9, 1969 and her mother on May 26, 2007; an infant brother Orville; brother Eldon on Oct. 23, 2010; sister-in-law Sandra Allgood and brother-in-law Howard Halpern.

Memorials may be given to the Pulmonology Dept. at University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha.

At the request of Laquita, no formal services will be held.

Carolyn Sue Nielson

Carolyn Sue Nielsen, lovingly known as Sue to her family and friends, passed away on Saturday; August 20, 2011 at Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs, IA a the age of 57 years.

Sue was born icon on September 10, 1953 in Council Bluffs, IA; the daughter of William and Donna (Franks) Lockard. She attended school in Council Bluffs and graduated from the Thomas Jefferson High School with the class of 1972. She was united in marriage to William "Bill: Nielsen on January 16, 1974 at Rock Port, MO.

Sue worked at the Grape Community Hospital in Hamburg. Later, she worked at the Glenwood State School, Glenwood, IA until she retired in 1987 due to a disability.

She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and her family was always the most important matter in her life.

She is survived by her husband William "Bill" Nielsen of Hamburg, IA; three daughters: Tammi Johnson and husband Mike, Kimberly Copeland and husband Chris and Jennifer Hammers and husband Jesse all of Hamburg; seven grandchildren: Destiny, Matthew, Jessica, Keisha, Payton, Isaiah and Haylee; a sister Sandra Vincent and husband Danny of Council Bluffs; two brothers: John Lockard and wife Francine of Omaha, NE and Dennis Lockard of Council Bluffs, IA; many nieces and nephews, other family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her brother William "Billy" Lockard and sister Patricia Fichter both of Council Bluffs.

Funeral Services will be held Wednesday morning (Aug. 24) at 11:00 a.m. at the Rash-Gude Funeral Home in Hamburg, IA with Pastor Donna Woods of the Free Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in the Mt. Olive Cemetery southeast of Hamburg.

The family will greet friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday at Rash-Gude Funeral Home in Hamburg, IA.

Memorials may be given to the Sue Nielsen family in her memory.

James Paul Johnson,

James Paul Johnson, lovingly know as Paul, age 59, of Omaha, NE (formerly Nebr. City) passed away on August 12, 2011 at his home in Omaha.

Paul was born icon on October 6, 1951 in Nebraska City, NE; the son of Lee Cyrus and Mary Jean (Head) Johnson. He graduated from Nebraska City Lourdes in 1969 and then attended Kearney State for one year before entering the United States Army. He entered the Army on November 17, 1970 and was honorably discharged on May 17, 1972.

He worked at the Bureau of National Affairs in Washington D.C. for many years preparing and and assisting in the printing of government documents and forms.

He is survived by his siblings: Phillip Johnson and wife Kathy of Lincoln, NE; Mary Rowan and husband Bill of Falls City, NE; Karen Kempkes of Omaha, NE and Gail Giron and husband Ernesto of Estes Park, CO; an uncle Don Schnitzer of Medford, Oregon and numerous nieces and nephews and friends.

A Memorial Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 23, 2011 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Nebr. City with Fr. Michael McCabe officiating. Inurnment will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery in Nebr. City with Military Honors conducted jointly by the Nebraska National Guard Funeral Honors Detail and the Talmage, NE American Legion Post.

A Rosary will be recited at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the church prior to the memorial mass.

Lovella E. Cooper

Age 85, of Nebr. City, NE (formerly Malvern, AR) passed away on Tuesday, August 16, 2011 at Duff's Friendship Villa in Nebr. City.

Lovella was born icon on February 20, 1926 in Hamilton, KS; the daughter of Guy and Opal Lorene (Needels) Webb. She was united in marriage to Harold "Norman" Cooper on November 20, 1943 in Lawrence, KS.

Lovella was a loving wife and mother. She worked as a telephone operator in Lawrence, KS and Green Forest, AR and was affiliated with the Assembly of God Church in Nebr. City.

She is survived by her 4 children: Clifford Cooper and wife Kathleen of Nebr. City, NE; Carol Ann Fields and husband Jerry of Magnolia, TX; Steve Cooper and wife Peggy of Greenfield, MO and Patty Prater and husband Tommy of Malvern, AR; 13 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great grandchildren; siblings: Edwin Webb and wife Meredith of Washington; Dorothy Williams of Kansas; Carol Chastain and husband Everett of Kansas; David Webb of Montana; Rose Milburn of Kansas and Larry Webb of Kansas and other family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Harold "Norman" Cooper in November of 1976; a sister Ella Mae and a brothers Eugene and Guy.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 20, 2011 at Ruggles-Wilcox Funeral Home in Arkadelphia, AR; burial will follow at Alford Cemetery in Possum Trot Community, AR.

The family will greet friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Ruggles-Wilcox Funeral Home.

Vogel, Arthur M.

Age 90, of Hamburg, IA passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2011 at the Nebraska Heart Institute in Lincoln, NE.

Art was born icon on May 20, 1921 in in Marion, KS; the son of Alex and Anna (Schuber) Vogel. He graduated from Rock Port High School in Missouri in 1939. He was united in marriage to Betty Jo Butler on March 31, 1945 in Hamburg, IA.

He started Vogel Popcorn in 1943. He was a longtime community leader and the owner/operator of Vogel Popcorn and Vogel Agri Service. He was a member of the United Trinity Church; the Kiwanis, the Mid-American Regional Boy Scouts Board; the Grape Community Hospital Board; the Hamburg School Board and Fremont Co. School Board; and he was on the Board of Directors of the Popcorn Institute National Assn. of Concessions.

He is survived by daughters: Anne Eichenholz and husband Richard) of Sebastopol, CA; and Debra Fisher of Newport Beach, CA; 5 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren other family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Betty Jo Vogel on November 20, 2008 and a brother Walter James Vogel in 1944.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, August 19, 2011 at the United Trinity Church in Hamburg, IA. Burial will follow at Mt. Olive Cemetery southeast of Hamburg.

The family will greet friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday (8/18) at United Trinity Church in Hamburg.

Memorials may be given to Hamburg Rescue or Grape Community Hospital Foundation.

Frieda H. Coufal

Age 91, of Nebraska City, NE passed away on Monday, August 15, 2011 at St. Mary's Hospital in Nebr. City.

Frieda was born icon on February 5, 1920 in Union, NE; the daughter of Charles and Rachel (Ervin) Boardman. She graduated from Nebraska City High School with the Class of 1938. She was united in marriage to Fred Coufal on June 9, 1964 in Omaha, NE and to this union two daughters were born: Judy and Alice.

Frieda worked at the former Ocoma Foods in Nebr. City. She then worked at American Meter in Nebr. City, from which she retired in 1982. She was a member of the American Legion, the Eagles Auxiliary, the V.F.W. Auxiliary and the Red Hat Society.

She is survived by her two daughters: Judy Glockel and husband Ernest of Nebr. City, NE; Alice Stover and husband Harvey of Beckley, WV, 6 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild and other family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Fred Coufal in 1991, 3 sisters and 2 brothers.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, August 19, 2011 at Gude Mortuary in Nebr. City. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery in Nebr. City.

The family will greet friends from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday (8/18) at the mortuary.

Memorials may be given to the Nebr. City Rescue Squad in lieu of flowers.

Beverly J. Gardner

Age 71, of Hamburg, IA passed away on Saturday, August 13, 2011 at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, NE.

Beverly was born icon on April 30, 1940 in Milan, MO; the daughter of Gail and Louise Bennett. She attended school at Hamburg High School and was a part of the class of 1958. . She was married to Gary W. Gardner and to this union three children were born: Terri, Jerri and D. Allen.

Beverly was a housewife and homemaker and in addition to this, she worked at other various jobs including at Hamburg Public Schools, Sidney Health Center and most recently at Stoner Drug where she enjoyed socializing with the customers.

Those left to cherish Beverly are her husband Norbert "Mo" Moeller of Hamburg, IA; children: Terri Gardner and Jerri Gardner both of Lincoln, NE; and D. Allen Gardner of Riverside, CA; two step-children: Derek Moeller and wife Michelle of Omaha, NE and Wade Moeller and wife Karen of Midland, TX; step-grandchildren: Annabell Scofield, Maliyah Moeller and Isaiah Moeller; two step-sisters: Carol Gillman of Stinson Beach, CA; Nancy Alfsen and husband Jim of Bolinas, CA; step-brother Jack Bennett of Stinson Beach, CA; step-mother Minetta Bennett of Stinson Beach, CA and other family and friends.

She was preceded in death by sisters Ellen Hutchinson and Charlene Martinez and a brother Billy Bennett.

Memorial Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, August 22, 2011 at the Rash-Gude Funeral Home in Hamburg, IA with Rev. Jim Young of the Hamburg United Methodist Church officiating.

Memorials may be given to the American Heart Assn. or the American Diabetes Assn.
