Norva M. (Mickey) Willson

Age 84, Nebraska City, Nebraska died Monday, September 26, 2011, at The Ambassador-Nebraska City. She was born icon in Sterling, Colorado on March 6, 1927 to William Allen and Helen Esther (Weed) Stark.

She was married to Jack Clarence Willson on February 8, 1944 in Portis, Kansas. Jack and Mickey moved to Florida in 1972 where they resided in Homestead until 2004 when they moved to Nebraska City to be closer to family. Mickey was a devoted wife and mother and loved to be with her family. One of her favorite pastimes was traveling.

She is survived by her husband, Jack Willson and two sons: Robert Willson and David Willson and wife Linda, all of Nebraska City, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Eric Willson and wife Kristina and Isabelle of Nebraska City and Lisa Bruce and husband Jason, and Emma and Adelle of Omaha, NE; sister-in-law Alice Courtney of Chester, NE; brothers-in-law and wives, Robert and Faye Willson of Miami, FL and Ormal and Helen Willson of Denver, CO and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and twelve brothers and sisters.

Family visitation will be on Friday, October 21 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Ambassador in Nebraska City with a Memorial Service to follow at 7:00 p.m. with Rev. Mark Cyza officiating.

Inurnment will be on Saturday, October 22 at 10:00 a.m. at High Creek Cemetery in Watson, Missouri with Rev. Peter Mitchell officiating. Honorary Pall bearers will be her grandchildren, Eric and Kristina Willson and Lisa and Jason Bruce.

Gude Mortuary in charge of the funeral arrangements.

Lori M. Reuss

Age 46 of Bellevue, NE; formerly of Nebr. City, NE passed away on Saturday; October 15, 2011 at Midlands Hospital in Papillion with her family by her side.

She was born icon on November 3, 1964 in Nebraska City, NE; the daughter of Martin William and Elaine Marie (Rhyno) Heng. She attended school in Nebraska City and graduated from Nebr. City Lourdes High School with the class of 1983. She then attended the University of Nebraska at Lincoln and later the Lincoln School of Commerce. She was baptized, confirmed and married at St. Joseph Catholic Church southwest of Nebr. City near Paul.

Lori was united in marriage to Michael J. Reuss on May 17, 1986 at St. Joseph Catholic Church and to this union three children were born: Sara Marie, Andrew Michael and Nathan Michael.

She worked as a Secretary for the State of Nebraska Dept. of Corrections in Lincoln until the family moved during her husband Mike's service in the United States Air Force. Lori was very involved in Breast Cancer Awareness and was very active in support groups and in other various ways.

She is survived by her husband Michael J. Reuss of Bellevue, NE; children: Sara M. Reuss of Bellevue, Andrew M. Reuss of Lincoln, NE and Nathan M. Reuss of Bellevue; her parents Martin and Elaine Heng of Nebr. City; sister Cindy Larson and husband Jeff of Omaha, NE; brother Lynn Heng and wife Sharon of Nebr. City; father and mother in law: John and Elaine Reuss of Papillion, NE; brother in law Martin Reuss and wife Michelle of Omaha, NE and sisters in law: Rena Pepper of Bellevue, NE and Rachel Reuss of Beloit, Wisc.; other family and many, many friends.

She was preceded in death by her paternal and maternal grandparents.

Funeral Services will be held Tuesday morning at 10:30 a.m. (Oct. 18) at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Nebraska City with Fr. Michael McCabe celebrating the Funeral Mass. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery southwest of Nebr. City near Paul.

A rosary/prayer service will be held Monday evening at 7:00 p.m. (Oct. 17) at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Nebraska City.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund is being established.

Willie James Massey

Age 95 of Nebraska City, NE passed away on October 10, 2011 at Duff's Friendship Villa in Nebraska City.

Willie was born icon on May 26, 1916 and raised at Dora, NM at the Massey Family Farm; the son of James Isaac and Ruth Garner (Hess) Massey. He attended two years of college in NM where he met his future wife, Lorraine. They married in January 1941 and lived in NM until they moved to Manley, NE in 1947, where he farmed and started to use terraces on the land.

In 1952 they moved to Nebraska City and rented farm land North of town. In 1958 he bought 4 1/2 acres of land in Nebraska City and built their home. He continued farming full-time until 1961, when he began working for the Nebraska City Utilities Company. He retired from there in 1980. He celebrated 50 years of marriage with Lorraine in 1991. He belonged to the Nebraska City Saddle Club for several years---He enjoyed traveling in their motor home, visiting the National parks and visiting relatives and friends.

He preceded in death by wife, Florence Lorraine (Preston); brothers, George Massey, Charles Massey and James Massey, Jr.; sons, James V. Massey and Douglas W. Massey.

He is survived by a son Ray Massey of Sikeston, MO; sister, Ruth Lawson and husband Darwin of Hope, NM; daughters-in-law Beverly Massey of Vallejo, CA and Linda Massey of Omaha, NE; six grand-children, many great-grandchildren; and close friends from the Nebraska City area.

Funeral Services will be Saturday at 11:00 am at Gude Funeral Home, Nebraska City with Rev. Keith Hunt of the First Baptist Church officiating. Interment will be in the Forest Lawn Cemetery in Omaha, NE.

Memorials may be given to the Morton James Public Library in Nebraska City.

Phyllis D. Keeler

Age 79 passed away on Friday morning; October 7, 2011 at Pleasant View Care Center in Rock Port, MO.

Phyllis Darlene (Gardner) Keeler was born icon on October 1, 1932 at Hamburg, IA; the daughter of Jess O. and Mamie (Lynn) Gardner. She attended school in Hamburg and graduated from the Hamburg High School with the class of 1950. She later attended school to become a Nurses Aid; a career that she worked in for many years.

Following high school, she worked as a telephone operator in Hamburg. Later, she started her career in healthcare as a nurses aid and she worked at various hospitals and nursing homes. She was a longtime and faithful member of the Assembly of God Church and was also a member of the Warrensburg Optimist Club, Warrensburg, MO.

She is survived by her three children: Carolyn Brady of Nixa, MO, Roger Keeler and wife Sheryl of Warrensburg, MO and Lori Green and husband Randy of Elkhart, ID; 11 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren; aunts Lois Lynn of Hamburg, IA and Mickey Bolton of Denver, CO; nieces, nephews, cousins, other family and friends.

She was preceded in death by a son Warren Keeler in 2009 and two sisters Ruth and Donita.

Funeral Services will be held Monday at 11:00 a.m. (Oct. 10) at the Rash-Gude Funeral Home in Hamburg, IA with Rev. Randy Green officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Olive Cemetery southeast of Hamburg.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Alzheimer's Association.

The family will greet friends and visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home.

Lois J. Gruber

Age 85, of Nebraska City, NE passed away on Tuesday, October 4, 2011 at St. Mary's Hospital in Nebraska City, NE.

Lois was born icon on April 30, 1926 in Talmage, NE; the daughter of Otto C. and Bertha E. (Turre) Shields. She was united in marriage to Theodore Gruber on January 21, 1947 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Nebraska City.

Lois was a housewife and homemaker and a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and the Christian Mothers.

She is survived by her three children: Pam Brewer and husband Tom of Lincoln, NE; Jan Schutte of Nebr. City and Nick Gruber and wife Therese of Nebr. City; five grandchildren: Judd Brewer and wife Michelle of Hattiesburg, MS; Jarrod Gruber and wife Shelsea of Pensacola, FL; Kyle Brewer and wife Justina of Lincoln, NE; Lauren Gruber and fiance Ben Westwood of Pensacola, FL and Kallie Brewer of Lincoln, NE; five great-grandchildren: Colby Brewer, McKenzie Gruber, Ava Gruber, Kinsley Brewer and Milly Brewer; sister-in-law Shirley Gruber of Nebr. City and other family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Theodore Gruber on August 20, 2005 and a sister Bonnie Jelinek.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 8, 2011 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Nebr. City. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery in Nebraska City.

A Rosary will be recited at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, at the church, prior to the funeral mass.

Memorials may be given to A.L.S. Foundation, the National M.S. Society, Juvenile Diabetes Fund, American Heart Assn. or Lourdes Central Catholic High School.

The casket will remain closed.

Berneil E. Housh

Age 86, of Nebraska City, NE passed away on October 3, 2011 at the Ambassador in Nebr. City. She resided at the Ambassador the last nine years of her life.

She was born icon on March 4, 1925 on a farm north of Syracuse, NE; the daughter of Joseph and Edith (Rugha) Martacho. She attended school and graduated from the Syracuse High School. She was later united in marriage to Robert P. Housh on June 24, 1948 in Nebraska City.

Berneil was a loving wife and mother. She worked at American Meter in Nebraska City for some 25 years before retiring in 1990. One of her favorite pastimes was fishing.

She is survived by her children Robert G. Housh and significant other Barbara Evans; Steve Housh and wife Lorreen; Evette VanderWal and husband Rich and Alan Housh and wife Pam all of Nebraska City and Denise Barret and husband Kevin of Bennett, NE; 12 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren; a sister Zona Leika of Lincoln, NE and other family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband Robert in 1992, a son Roger Lee Housh and a brother Vyron Martacho.

Funeral Services will held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 7, 2011 at Gude Mortuary in Nebraska City, NE with Terry Weible officiating. Burial will follow at Wyuka Cemetery in Nebr. City.

There will be open visitation at the mortuary after 2:00 p.m. on Thursday (10/5).

Memorials may be given to the family.

Myla May Durr

Infant daughter of Jeremiah and Meghan Durr passed away on September 28, 2011 at Bergan Mercy Medical Center in Omaha, NE.

She was born icon at 2:08 a.m. on Wednesday morning; September 28, 2011; the daughter of Jeremiah Joseph and Meghan May (Edwards) Durr. She passed away the same day at 11:24 a.m. after being with her family for some nine hours.

She is survived by her parents Jeremiah and Meghan Durr of Nebr. City; brothers: Hayden Michael Durr and Ryker Joseph Durr both of the home; maternal grandparents Rodney and Cindy Edwards of Nebr. City; paternal grandparents Raymond and Nancy Durr of Nebr. City; maternal great-grandparents Richard and Mary Copenhaver of Apache Jct., AZ; paternal great grandmother Peggy Huffman of Auburn, NE; aunts and uncles: Jennifer Edwards of Nebr. City, Cliff Edwards of Phoenix, AZ, Guy Durr and wife Taryn of Marino Valley, CA, Kimberly Gross-Rhode and husband Rob of Crete, NE, Jody Honeysuckle and husband Gary of Nebr. City, Christina Smallfoot and husband Ryan of Nebr. City, Theresa Brown and husband Rick of Nebr. City, Gabriel Durr of Nebr. City, Nina Durr of Nebr. City, Zebulon Durr and wife Amber of Hamburg, IA, Natasha Durr of Lincoln, NE, Nicole Durr of Nebr. City and Tiffany Durr of Nebr. City; other family and friends.

Funeral Services were held Saturday morning at 10:30 a.m. (Oct. 1, 2011) at the Gude Mortuary in Nebraska City with Fr. Michael McCabe officiating. Burial followed in the Wyuka Cemetery at Nebr. City.

Memorials may be given to the family in Myla's memory.

Harley E. Rakes

Age 90, of Nebraska City, NE passed away early Wednesday, Sept. 28, 2011 at St. Mary's Hospital in Nebr. City.

Harley was born icon on April 10, 1921 in Union, NE; the son of Albert and Carrie V. (Hall) Rakes. He entered the United States Army on July 11, 1942 and was discharged on October 4, 1945 and proudly served his country during WWII. He was a Corporal with the 3869th Service Command Unit. He was captured by the German Army and placed in a work camp outside Munich, Germany in 1944 where he was a prisoner for 8 months and 22 days.. Their quarters consisted of tents with straw on the ground for a bed. Most of the prisoners were infested with lice and they all had to be decontaminated before they could be liberated. He was liberated in April of 1945.

He was united in marriage to Yvonne Guthals on October 28, 1946 in Nebraska City.

Harley worked as a custodian at the Nebraska City Post Office for over 30 years. He loved polka music and did craftwork as a hobby.

He is survived by his son Gary Rakes and wife Carole of Rochester, NY; brother Orval Rakes and wife Lois and sister Zola Smith all of Nebr. City and other family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife Yvonne in May of 1985; his parents and a sister Evelyn.

Graveside Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, September 30, 2011 at Wyuka Cemetery in Nebr. City with Military Services conducted by the Nebraska National Guard Funeral Honors Detail; interment will follow the services.

Gude Mortuary in Nebr. City in charge of the arrangements.

Everett L. Lyons

Age 77 of Hamburg, IA passed away on Saturday; Sept. 17, 2011 at UNMC in Omaha, NE.

Everett was born icon on October 10, 1933 in Hamburg, IA; the son of Arnold and Vada (Weisenberger) Lyons. He graduated from Sidney High School in Sidney, IA with the Class of 1951. He was united in marriage to Mary Ann Lutz in Nebraska City on November 29, 1952. He was a lifelong resident of Fremont County except for the years he served in the Army. He proudly served his country from 1955 to 1957 in the Army and then served in the National Guard for 6 years.

He was a lifetime farmer and even after his retirement in 1995, he enjoyed helping in any way he could. His other true enjoyment was wood working.

Everett is survived by his wife Mary Lyons of Hamburg, IA; children: Kathy Jacobs and husband Tom of Council Bluffs, IA; Mike Lyons and wife Kathy of Hamburg, IA and Vicki Hanson and husband Steve of Hamburg, IA; seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; sister Mildred Loewe of Sidney, IA; numerous brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews and other family and many friends.

Funeral Services will be held Wednesday afternoon, September 21, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at the Rash-Gude funeral Home in Hamburg, IA. Burial will be in the Hamburg Cemetery with complete military services conducted by the Hamburg American Legion Post #156.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday (9/20) at the Rash-Gude Funeral Home in Hamburg.

Memorials may be given to the Hamburg, IA Rescue or the Sidney, IA Rescue.

Helen L. Miller

Helen L. Athen was born icon August 8, 1920, in Atchison County, MO; the daughter of Earle T. and Myrtle (Moore) Athen. She attended Sunny Slope Country School in Atchison County, MO. She was privileged to have the same teacher, Gladys Brown, all eight years. She graduated from Hamburg High School as Valedictorian of her class of 1937. In 1940 she was Hamburg's Peony Festival Queen. She attended Grand Island business college until becoming bookkeeper and dental assistant for Dr. J.H. Bang in Hamburg.

Helen married Ralph Miller on December 21, 1941. She was a member of Hamburg Methodist Church until her marriage, when she joined the Madison Methodist Church. After its closing in 1970, they joined the Farragut Methodist Church. She served in many offices and on various committees in both churches. Helen and Ralph still lived on the farm and always enjoyed square dancing, traveling and spending time in their winter home in Florida.

She is survived by husband Ralph; daughter Deloris and husband Glen Stenzel, two grandchildren: Debra (Scott) Hennings and Steven (Wendi) Stenzel and five great-grandchildren: Brett and Amy Hennings and Matthew, Jacob and Nathan Stenzel; sisters-in-law Jean Athen, Betty Athen, and Ruth Nook and brother-in-law Carl Rose, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers Orville Athen and Allen Athen.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2011 at the Rash-Gude Funeral Home in Hamburg, IA with Rev. Fred Bryson officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Zion Cemetery in Rural Hamburg, IA.

The family will greet friends on Monday (9/19) at the funeral home from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Memorials may be given to the Farragut Methodist Church or Hamburg Rescue.

Pauline Cockerham

Pauline Cockerham, age 74, of Lincoln, NE passed away on Friday, September 16, 2011 at the Tabitha Journey House in Lincoln, NE.

Pauline was born icon on May 28, 1937 in Northboro, IA; the daughter of Loren O. and Lois I (Irvin) Williams. She attended school in Iowa and graduated in 1955. She was united in marriage to Donald L. Cockerham on September 23, 1956 in Coin, IA and to this union three children were born: Steven, Natalie and Rodney.

Pauline worked as an Operator for the former L.T.& T Phone Company in Nebraska City for many years and also at the Farmers Bank. She later worked at Commerce Bank in Missouri from 1981 to 1999. She moved to Lincoln, NE in January of 2000, where she resided until her death. She was a currently a member of the Southwood Lutheran Church in Lincoln and was very active in the church and its many activities. Her favorite pastimes were reading, sewing and working crossword puzzles. She also dearly loved playing the piano and was a very talented pianist.

She is survived by her children: Steven D. Cockerham and wife Kim of Grand Island, NE; Natalie D. Schreiter and husband David of Lincoln, NE and Rodney L. Cockerham and wife Michelle of Liberty, MO; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; brother Charles P. Williams and wife Kay of Ankeny, IA; mother-in-law Dorothy Miller of Farragut, IA, and dear friend Ken Hulbert of Lincoln, NE and other family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Cockerham on January 13, 1990; her parents and a sister Lora Lea Fulk in 2009.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, September 19, 2011 at Gude Mortuary in Nebraska City, NE with Pastor Michael Ryan officiating. Burial will follow at Wyuka Cemetery in Nebraska City, NE.

Pallbearers will be Shane and Mike Cockerham, Ryan and Nick Schreiter, Dale Fulk and Jared Scott.

The family will greet friends from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday (9/18) at the mortuary.

Memorials may be given to the Tabitha Journey House in Lincoln, NE.
