Hastings resident, Mary V. DeVaney, 93, of 1400 N. Kansas, died March 3, 2002 at Good Samaritan Center, Nelson, Nebraska.

Memorial services will be Thursday, March 7, 2002; 2:00 P.M. at Butler-Volland Chapel with Rev. Barry Rempp officiating. No visitation or viewing. Interment at Parkview Cemetery, Hastings, Nebraska.

Mary V. DeVaney was born icon May 24, 1908 in Hastings, Nebraska to George & Nina (Bell) Springer. She graduated from Hastings High School and married Walter DeVaney. He preceded her in death on January 8, 1983. She was a homemaker and a member of First Congregational church, Eastern Star and Daughters of the Nile. She was a life long Hastings resident.

Mary V. DeVaney was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Walter, a son, George and 1 sister, Ruth Swigle.

Survivors include,

John Allan Aspen

John Allan Aspen, 63, of 106 East 17th St., Grand Island, Nebraska, died Friday, January 11, 2002 at Good Samaritan Hospital, Kearney, Nebraska.

Rosary will be Sunday, January 13, 2002; 7:30 P.M. at Butler-Volland Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, January 14, 2002; 10:30 A.M. at St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church with Father Larry Gyhra officiating. Burial with military rites will be in Parkview Cemetery, Hastings, Nebraska.

John Aspen was born icon December 1, 1938 in Yankton, South Dakota to Lester M. & Lucille (Buschelman) Aspen. He moved with his family to Hastings, Nebraska in 1944. He attended St. Cecilia’s Catholic Schools and graduated from Hastings Senior High in 1956. He attended the University of Nebraska, Omaha, Nebraska. He served in the United States Air Force from 1957-1968, serving in Germany, Japan, Philippines as well as various United States locations. On July 18, 1964, he married Dorothy Grace. They later divorced. He lived in Omaha, Nebraska from 1968-1972 and in Hastings, Nebraska from 1972-1974. He moved to Grand Island, Nebraska in 1974 where he owned and operated Johnny’s Lock & Key. He was a member of Experimental Aircraft Association.

John Aspen was preceded in death by his father, Lester M. Aspen.

Paul Gartner

Paul Gartner, 85, of 1014 W. 12th Street, died Sunday, January 13, 2002 at his home.

Services will be Thursday, January 17, 2002; 11:00 A.M. at the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd with Rev. John Lee Ross officiating. Burial will be in Glenvil Cemetery, Glenvil, Nebraska.

Paul Gartner was born icon September 29, 1916 in Glenvil, Nebraska to Peter & Maggie (Trauernicht) Gartner. He married Freda Black in 1940. They farmed around Glenvil, Nebraska until 1957 when they moved to Hastings, Nebraska and worked in construction. In 1959, he was farm manager of Bethphage Mission at Axtell, Nebraska until 1963. He started as a real estate agent in 1964 and began Gartner Realty in 1969retiring in 1983. He was a life long area resident and a member of Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd.

Paul Gartner was preceded in death by his parents, 1 son, Leonard, 1 great grandson, 3 brothers and 3 sisters.

Randy G. Paymal, 59, of 1109 N. Webster, died Sunday, January 13, 2002 at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital.

Services will be Thursday, January 17, 2002; 2:00 P.M. at Faith Lutheran Church with Rev. Carl H. Rehwaldt officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery, Hastings, Nebraska.

Randy G. Paymal was born icon December 6, 1942 in Hastings, Nebraska to Ronald & Betty (Feis) Paymal. He graduated from Hastings High School in 1961 and attended Kearney State College, Kearney, Nebraska. He served in the United States Army from March 23, 1964 to March 16, 1967. After his discharge, he returned to Hastings, Nebraska and worked for Hastings Grain Inspection. In 1972, he became a Fireman for the City of Hastings, Nebraska, retiring in 1998. On March 6, 1998, he married Marcy (Smith) Waegli. He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, V.F.W., Elks and Elks Country Club.

Randy G. Paymal was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.

Former Hastings resident, Richard H. Cushing, 74, of Surprise, Arizona, died Wednesday, January 9, 2002 in Boswell Hospital, Sun City, Arizona.

Rosary will be Friday, January 18, 2002; 5:00 P.M. at Butler-Volland Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, January 19, 2002; 11:00 A.M. at St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church with Father Steven Major officiating. Burial with military rites will be in Parkview Cemetery, Hastings, Nebraska.

Richard H. Cushing was born icon December 11, 1927 in Hastings, Nebraska to Harry H. & Grace (Lavely) Cushing. He graduated from St. Cecilia’s High School in 1946 . He served in the United States Army from August 28, 1946 to December 12, 1947. He attended the University of Nebraska, Lincoln and was a member of S.A.E. Faternity. He married Patricia Frasier in1949 and she preceded him in death on June 10, 1984. He worked in the family’s food brokerage business, the Cushing Company in Hastings, Nebraska until the mid 1950's. He moved to Denver, Colorado, Billings, Montana and then to Omaha, Nebraska to rejoin his father in the family business. He moved to Surprise, Arizona in 1995 from Omaha, Nebraska. On July 25, 2001, he married Goldia (Simons) Story. He was past member of St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church and American Legion Post #0374.

Richard H. Cushing was preceded in death by his parents, 1st wife, Patricia Cushing and a son, Judson Cushing.

Donald Lee Runcie Sr.

Donald Lee Runcie Sr., 75, of 2410 West 5th Street died Wednesday, February 20, 2002 at his home after a long illness.

Services will be Saturday, February 23, 2002; 2:00 P.M. at Grace United Methodist Church with Rev. Jim Miller & Rev. Dean Joy officiating. Private family interment at a later date.

Donald Lee Runcie Sr. was born icon March 20, 1926 in Hastings, Nebraska to Hiram & Pearle (Rutan) Runcie. He attended Hastings High School until 1944. He entered the U. S. Army and was a veteran of WWII and Korea. He served in the 24th Infantry Division and was discharged in 1951. He married Jean Pontine on April 17, 1949. He worked for Hastings Industries for 37 years retiring in 1983. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church and a past member of Southern Hill Golf Course. His hobbies included working with stained glass, golfing, singing in the Chorus of the Plains and the Neighborhood Four Quartet.

Robert D. Johnson was born icon November 20, 1946 in Hastings, Nebraska to Robert & Berdena (Janssen) Johnson. He attended Hastings High School and on December 9, 1972 he married Kathryn ‘Kathy’ Struss at Christ Lutheran Church, rural Juniata, Nebraska. He worked at Fred Spady Motors in Hastings and then for Richard Mousel Auto Repair. He became co-owner of B & R Body Shop some 25 years ago until his death.

Helena ‘Lena’ Onken, 96, of Perkins Pavilion, died Friday, February 15, 2002 at Perkins Pavilion.

Services will be Tuesday, February 19, 2002; 2:00 P.M. at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Glenvil, Nebraska with interim ministers Bonnie & Les Larsen officiating. Burial will be in Glenvil Cemetery, Glenvil, Nebraska.

Helena ‘Lena’ Onken was born icon May 29, 1905 in Glenvil, Nebraska to Klaus & Helena (Jansen) (Saathoff) Hinrichs. She was baptized on July 30, 1905 and confirmed on April 9, 1922 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, rural Glenvil, Nebraska by Rev. C. Goede. She attended country school, District #51, Glenvil, Nebraska. She married John F. Onken on November 6, 1925 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, rural Glenvil, Nebraska and he preceded her in death. She was a homemaker and a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Glenvil, Nebraska. She was a Sunday School teacher and a Circle member of Immanuel. She was an Avon representative and enjoyed playing cards, gardening and flowers, yard work, crocheting and working puzzles and traveling.

Helena ‘Lena’ Onken was preceded in death by her parents, husband, John F. Onken, daughter Karen Hinrichs, 5 brothers and 4 sisters.
