Leora J. Scribner, 74, of Good Samaritan Village, Hastings, Nebraska, died Friday, February 15, 2002 at Perkins Pavilion, Good Samaritan Village.
Services will be Tuesday, February 19, 2002; 10:30 A.M. at Butler-Volland Chapel, with Rev. Art Schakat officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Hastings, Nebraska.
Leora J. Scribner was born
September 25, 1927 in Stockham, Nebraska, to George & Edith (Topping) Willcock. She graduated from Stockham High School and married Robert O. Scribner on August 17, 1947. He preceded her in death on July 10, 1981. She moved from Lincoln, Nebraska to Hastings, Nebraska in the 50's. She was a cook for Thiel’s Café. She was a past member of the PTA, Den Mother for the Boy Scouts of America and Hastings Women’s Bowling Association.
Leora J. Scribner was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Robert O. Scribner, 1 brother and a great granddaughter.

Former area resident, Elroy D. Swanstrom, 64, of Arvada, Colorado, died Friday, February 15, 2002 in Lutheran Hospital, Wheatridge, Colorado.
Services will be Thursday, February 21, 2002; 10:00 A.M. at All Saints Chapel with Rev. Neil Vik officiating. Burial will be in Nora Cemetery, Nora, Nebraska.
Elroy D. Swanstrom was born
February 15, 1938 in Oak, Nebraska to Arthur & Edna A. (Kapperman) Swanstrom. He attended high school in Nelson, Nebraska. He was a contractor in Colorado for many years.
Elroy D. Swanstrom was preceded in death by his mother, Edna in 1997.

Thelma G. (Hunt) Zehr, 96, of Hastings, Nebraska, died Friday, February 8, 2002 at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital, Hastings, Nebraska.
Services will be Tuesday, February 12, 2002;10:30 A.M. at Grace United Methodist Church, Hastings, Nebraska with Rev. Jim Miller and Rev. Dean Joy officiating. Eastern Star Memorial Service will be conducted by Acacia Chapter #39 Order of the Eastern Star, Hastings, Nebraska. Burial will be in Chappell Cemetery, Chappell, Nebraska on Wednesday, February 13, 2002; 1:00 P.M. mountain time with Rev. Dean Joy officiating.
Thelma G. (Hunt) Zehr was born
March 19, 1905 near Juniata, Nebraska to Clarence & Goldie Charlotte (Conger) Hunt. She graduated from Chappell High School, Chappell, Nebraska. She married Nicholas C. Zehr in Greeley, Colorado on June 4, 1925 and he preceded her in death on February 28, 1996. They lived in Chappell until 1936 when they moved to Fremont, Nebraska and in 1989 to Good Samaritan Village, Hastings, Nebraska. Thelma moved to Sunnyside Retirement Home in 1997 and resided there until becoming ill in November 2001. She then resided in Haven Home in Kenesaw, Nebraska and then in Perkins Pavilion, Good Samaritan Village, Hastings, Nebraska. She clerked in several stores in Fremont, including J C Penney. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church; a dual member of Acacia Chapter #39 in Hastings and of Arbor Vitae Chapter #92 in Fremont Order of the Eastern Star, past Noble Grand of Rebekah’s in Chappell, Nebraska and NARFE in Hastings.
Thelma G. Zehr was preceded in death by her parents and 2 sisters, Marguerite Spindler and Dorothy Riley.

Thelma E. Sanders, 83, of 402 South Delaware, Hastings, Nebraska died Friday, February 8, 2002 at her home.

Thelma E. Sanders was born
June 6, 1918 in Johnstown, Nebraska to Fred & Rose (Jelinek) Micheel. She graduated from Woodlake High School in Woodlake, Nebraska. In September of 1939 she married Ted Higgins and he preceded her in death. She had been a member of St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Valentine, Nebraska and was a clerk at J C Penney in Valentine. She later moved to Hastings and married Thomas Sanders and he preceded her in death in 1984. She cooked at Hastings Catholic Schools, and worked for Hastings College in housekeeping before retiring in 1984. She was a member of AARP.

Melvin L. Plum was born
December 27, 1916 in Hastings, Nebraska to Clinton E. & Katie
Barbara (Leaman) Plum. He graduated from Hastings High School in 1935 and from the University of Nebraska College of Engineering in 1943. On February 21, 1943, he married Lenora E. Genschmer. They moved to Cleveland, Ohio where he worked for NACA for seven years. They moved back to Hastings, Nebraska in 1950 and lived and farmed northwest of Hastings, retiring when he was 75. He was a life long member of First Baptist Church, Hastings, Nebraska.

Emil Frank Hajny
Emil F. Hajny, 84, of 106 University, died Tuesday, February 5, 2002 at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital.
Rosary service will be Monday, February 11, 2002; 10:00 A.M with Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 10:30: A.M at St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church. Burial with Military Rites will be in St. Martin’s / Loucky Cemetery, Deweese, Nebraska, 2:00 P.M.
Emil F. Hajny was born
March 29, 1917 in Clay County, near Fairfield, Nebraska to Frank W. & Mary B. (Mazour) Hajny. He graduated Fairfield High School in 1936. On January 11, 1940, he enlisted in the United States Coast Guard and served over seas duty for four years as radio man installing communication bases and radar. He returned to the states as Chief Radio Technician as an instructor for two years at the United States Coast Guard School in Groton, Connecticut. He was discharged on January 10, 1046. He worked as a radio station engineer for KHAS and KRVN, for Shulmerich Carillon Bell Company installing bell systems throughout the United States, as an electronics field and installation engineer for KHOL, KHAS, KOLN-KGIN, retiring in 1979 from television stations channel-10 and channel-11, Lincoln-Grand Island, Nebraska. While working for Shulmerich Bells he installed systems in the Empire State Building, University of Nebraska, Lincoln and many churches. As an engineer for KOLN-KGIN, he helped install and maintain twenty translator systems and televison towers. He married Velma Skalka on May 17, 1949. He was awarded the Captain of All State Post Commanders Team in Nebraska in 1960-1961. He was a life long area resident and a member of St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church, Hastings V.F.W. Post#1346, Eagles and a Charter Member of the South Central Czech’s Society.

William E. Hall was born
November 20, 1922, in Smith Center, Kansas to Winifred & Nellie (Rorabaugh) Hall. He married Esther Marie Goebel on May 12, 1944 and they later divorced. He was a custodian for Jefferson County Public Schools in Colorado. On June 22, 1974, he married Ruth Dunn and she preceded him in death in 1993. He moved to Hastings, Nebraska in 1994 after living in Colorado for 22 years. He was a member of Salvation Army.
William E. Hall was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Ruth, 2 sons, Lance Corporal Richard LeRoy Hall and an infant, Vernon Dean Hall.

Owen Francis Oatman was born
on Mother’s Day, May 12, 1940 in Red Cloud, Nebraska to Edwin Leetsch & Nora Catherine (Slaby) Oatman. He graduated from Blue Hill High School, Blue Hill, Nebraska in 1958. On May 5, 1961, he married Mary Alice Hecht and they later divorced. On September 15, 1984, he married Elane Caroline Swanson. He was the service manager at Laird Motors for 38 years, retiring in December 2000. He was a member of the Eagles. He was a Hastings resident for 40 years.
Owen Francis Oatman was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Gerald Oatman, a grandson, Korey Larsen and a brother-in-law, Carl ‘Beaver’ Mason.
