Norval D. Placke, 69, of Denver, Colorado, died Sunday, February 3, 2002 at St. Luke’s Presbyterian Hospital, Denver, Colorado.

Services will be Friday, February 8, 2002; 10:30 A.M. at Butler-Volland Chapel, with Pastor Kathleen Kasper officiating. Burial will be in the Kenesaw Cemetery, Kenesaw, Nebraska.

Norval D. Placke was born icon November 3, 1932 in Adams County, Nebraska, to Henry C. & Elise R. (Warnke) Placke. He moved with his family to Kenesaw, Nebraska in 1943 and graduated from Kenesaw High School in1951. He farmed before serving in the United States Army during the Korean War from January 29, 1953 to January 26, 1955. He worked for United Air Lines in Chicago, Illinois, Atlanta, Georgia and Denver, Colorado.

Norval D. Placke was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Charles Placke.

Edith V. Means, 85, of 607 Lane F., died Sunday, February 3, 2002 at Perkins Pavilion.

Services will be Thursday, February 7, 2002; 2:00 P.M. at Butler-Volland Chapel with Rev. Neil Vik officiating. Burial will be in Roseland Cemetery, Roseland, Nebraska.

Edith V. Means was born icon April 1, 1916 in Roseland, Nebraska to Peter & Mary (Kranau) Wermeskerch. She attended Roseland Public School and on June 15, 1937, married Virgil Means. He preceded her in death. She worked as a nurses aide at Good Samaritan Village. She lived in Glenvil, Nebraska for many years, moving to Hastings, Nebraska in 1993.

Edith V. Means was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Virgil, 4 sisters, 3 brothers and a granddaughter, Bonnie Lee.

Fred K. 'Fritz' Walker

Former Hastings resident, Fred K. ‘Fritz’ Walker, 89, of Haven Home, Kenesaw, Nebraska, died Monday, February 4, 2002 at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital.

Services will be Saturday, February 9, 2002; 10:00 A.M. at First Christian Church with Rev. Judith Allen officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery, Hastings, Nebraska.

Fred was born icon August 17, 1912 in Grand Island, Nebraska to George & Kathryn (Deitz) Walker. He moved with his family to Hastings, Nebraska at the age of 3. He attended Hastings Public Schools and married Waunita Keeler on January 2, 1937 in Smith Center, Kansas. He worked at Western Land Roller for 49 years, retiring in 1977. He managed the Wintergarden Ballroom from 1950-1960. He was a member of First Christian Church, Knights of Pythias and the Eagles.

Fred was preceded in death by his parents, son DeWayne, grandson Christopher Walker, 3 brothers and 2 sisters.

Velma A. Korgan

Former Hastings resident, Velma A. Korgan, 91, of Harvard Rest Haven, died Tuesday, February 19, 2002 at Harvard Rest Haven, Harvard, Nebraska.

Graveside services will be Thursday, February 21; 11:00 A.M. at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Hastings, Nebraska.

Velma A. Korgan was born icon November 1, 1910 in Eustis, Nebraska to Charles R. & Nellie (Stark) Wyatt. She graduated from Hastings High School and on December 22, 1928, she married Joseph L. Korgan. He preceded her in death on February 1, 1985. She worked at Swift & Company, Dalton Café and Hastings Daily Tribune. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and Zion Lutheran Altar Society.

Velma A. Korgan was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Joseph, an infant daughter, Rosella May and a son, Lowell D. Korgan

Hildegard F. Svoboda, 85, of 1116 Circle L., died Wednesday, February 20, 2002 at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital.

Rosary will be Friday, February 22, 2002; 8:00 P.M. at Butler-Volland Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, February 23, 2002; 10:00 A.M. at St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church with Father Larry Gyhra officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Hastings, Nebraska.

Hildegard F. Svoboda was born icon July 28, 1916 in Nuckolls County, Nebraska. near St. Stephens to Ben & Elizabeth (Kliene) Venhaus. She graduated from Lawrence High School in 1934 and married William J. Svoboda on September 11, 1939 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Lawrence, Nebraska. She was a member of St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church, Altar Society in Hastings and American Legion Auxiliary, Gold Star Sisters Lawrence, Nebraska. She moved to Hastings, Nebraska 18 years ago from the Blue Hill, Nebraska area.

Hildegard F. Svoboda was preceded in death by her parents, 2 sisters and 7 brothers.

Steven Gilruth Boyd, 31, of 820 Richmond, Hastings, Nebraska. Past away Friday, February 22, 2002 at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital, Hastings, Nebraska; after a lengthy battle with melanoma.

Wake /Rosary service will be Monday, February 25, 2002; 7:30 P.M. at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Hastings, Nebraska. Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday, February 26, 2002; 10:00 A.M. at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Hastings, Nebraska, with Father Michael Houlihan and Father David Bourek officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery, Hastings, Nebraska.

Steven Boyd was born icon December 4, 1970 in Denver, Colorado to Jerry & Blue (Darrington) Boyd. He graduated from Hastings High School in 1989. He graduated from Central Arizona Junior College and attended University of Nebraska Lincoln. Steve was a record holding pitcher for the University of Nebraska Baseball Team for 1992 and 1993 seasons. He married Heidy DeWitt on July 20, 1996 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Hastings, Nebraska. Steve worked at Nebraskaland Distributors in Sales. He was actively involved in softball, golf and was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Lochland and Southern Hills Country Clubs.

Elva M. Aufdenkamp, 95, of Perkins Pavilion, died Sunday, February 24, 2002 at Perkins Pavilion.

Services will be Thursday, February 28, 2002; 1:30 P.M at Zion Lutheran Church (Wanda) with Rev. Harold King officiating. Burial will be in Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery (Wanda).

Elva M. Aufdenkamp was born icon July 24, 1906 in Reemsville, Kansas to Clarence E. & Eda (Witzel) Barnes. She moved to Hastings, Nebraska at an early age and graduated from Hastings Senior High School and attended Business College. She married Elvin Aufdenkamp, February 8, 1955 and he preceded her in death in 1985. She was a secretary for A.H. Jones Dealership for Charles Osborne for 45 years. She was a member of Wanda Zion Lutheran Church and for several associations with the ladies in the church.

Elva M. Aufdenkamp was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Elvin, brothers, Jack & Pete Barnes, 2 sisters, Elsa Barnes and Esther Kennedy.

Ella Hahlweg, 91, of RR#1, Hastings, Nebraska, died Monday, February 25, 2002 at Perkins Pavilion.

Services will be Thursday, February 28, 2002;11:00 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church with Rev. Donald E. Boeschen officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery, Hastings, Nebraska.

Ella Hahlweg was born icon January 15, 1911 in Adams County, Nebraska to August & Hulda (Einspahr) Hahlweg. She attended Hastings College and Kearney State College and received her B.S. in Special Education. She taught school in Adams, Kearney and Buffalo counties. She was a life long area resident except for two years that she lived in Washington D.C. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Luther Anns and the National Retired Teachers Association.

Ella Hahlweg was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Harley.

Edna L. M. Carper, 91, of 7540 W. Powerline Rd, Ayr, Nebraska, died March 24, 2002 at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital.

Services will be Wednesday, March 27, 2002; 2:00 P.M. at Immanuel Lutheran Church southwest of Hastings, Nebraska. Burial will be in Immanuel Lutheran Churchyard Cemetery.

Edna L. M. Carper was born icon April 4, 1910 in Adams County, southwest of Hastings, Nebraska to Charles & Louise (Gartner) Bunde. She married DeVerde Carper in Adams County, on February 19, 1939 and he preceded her in death in 1985. She was a homemaker and a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. She was a life long area resident.

Edna L. M. Carper was preceded in death by her parents, husband, DeVerde, 2 sisters and 9 brothers.
