Richard Joel January, 61, of 3501 S. Valley Rd, Hastings, Nebraska, went to be with Our Heavenly Father, Saturday, March 30, 2002 from his home surrounded by his family.

Services with Masonic Rites will be Tuesday, April 2, 2002; 2:00 P.M. at Butler-Volland Chapel, Hastings, Nebraska with the Rev. Al Schultz from Eagan, Minnesota officiating. Burial with Military Rites by Hastings Veterans Organizations will be in Parkview Cemetery, Hastings, Nebraska.

Richard Joel January was born icon January 27, 1941 in New Orleans, Louisiana, the son of the late Chester & Margaret (Baugh) January. He was raised in Hastings, Nebraska and graduated from Hastings High School in 1958. He married his high school sweetheart, Deanna E. Robare, on June 13, 1959. He served in the United States Navy from 1958 to 1962. He attended Hastings College and graduated from Southeast Community College in Milford, Nebraska with an Associate Degree in Electronics. His career was in electronics until 1977 when Richard joined Farm Bureau Insurance Company as an agent in Alma, Nebraska. In 1979, he accepted the Agency Manager position for Scottsbluff/Sioux Agency in Scottsbluff, Nebraska. In March of 1984, he was appointed Division Manager for western Nebraska. March 1987, he was promoted to South Dakota Agency Vice-President and resided in Huron, South Dakota. Minnesota and Utah agencies were added to South Dakota in April 1996 and he was appointed Regional Vice-President in January 1999. Richard graduated in October 1987 from the American College in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania with a CLU designation and was a member of NAIFA and GAMA. He is a Master Mason at Mitchell Lodge #263 in Mitchell, Nebraska and a member of the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry in Alliance, Nebraska and a member of the Methodist Church in Huron, South Dakota.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Chester and Margaret January.

Milo A. Rutherford

Milo A. Rutherford, 74, of 2403 W. 5th, died Saturday, March 30, 2002 at NHS Clarkson Hospital, Omaha, Nebraska.

Services will be Wednesday, April 3, 2002; 10:30 A.M. at Butler-Volland Chapel with Pastor Kathleen Kasper officiating. Burial with Military Rites by Hastings veterans organizations will be in Parkview Cemetery, Hastings, Nebraska.

Milo A. Rutherford was born icon March 15, 1928 in Hastings, Nebraska to Lester & Fauvette (Martin) Rutherford, He graduated from Hastings High School and served in the United States Coast Guard from February 12, 1946 to April 18, 1947. He was the Gas Inspector for the City of Hastings for 34 years, retiring in 2001. He was also a photographer and a gun smith. He married Leanne Doering on September 29, 1962. He was a member of Masonic Lodge, Eagles, American Legion, V.F.W., UCT, Safari Club International, Four Rivers Sportsman Club and a life member of NRA. He was a life long Hastings resident.

Milo A. Rutherford was preceded in death by his parents, 1 brother, 1 sister and a granddaughter.

Victoria Marie ‘Tori’ Weber, daughter of Eric & Sara (Thomas) Weber of Chesapeake, Virginia, was born icon March 23, 2002 and died on March 23, 2002 at Portsmouth Naval Hospital, Portsmouth, Virginia.

Services will be Monday, April 1, 2002; 1:00 P.M. at Butler-Volland Chapel with Rev. Matt Nieman officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Hastings, Nebraska.

L. J. Schmidt, 64, of 1506 Apache, Hastings, Nebraska died Saturday, March 23, 2002 at his home.

Services will be Wednesday, March 27, 2002; 10:30 A.M. at First St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Hastings, Nebraska with Pastor Sacia Vik officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Hastings, Nebraska.

L. J. Schmidt was born icon March 24, 1937 in Ayr, Nebraska to Klaus W. & Hendricka (Eihusen) Schmidt. He graduated from Hastings High School in 1955. He married Marilyn L. Classen on July 15, 1956 at First St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Hastings, Nebraska. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1956-1959. He retired as manager of the Heartland Co-op Elevator at Juniata, Nebraska. He was a member of First St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Eagles Aerie #592 and Mid-West Lodge #317 A.F. & A.M. all of Hastings, Nebraska.

L. J. Schmidt was preceded in death by his parents and 1 brother Jacob Schmidt.

Doris M. Sahling

Former Hastings resident, Doris M. Sahling, of 225 N. 56th St., #515, Gateway Manor, Lincoln, Nebraska, died Thursday, March 21, 2002 at BryanLGH Medical Center East, Lincoln, Nebraska.

Memorial services will be Tuesday, March 26, 2002; 1:00 P.M. at First Presbyterian Church with Dr. Carl W. Utley officiating. Private family interment at a later date. Memorial service at Gateway Manor will be Wednesday, March 27, 2002; 2:00 P.M. with Dr. Andrew McDonald officiating.

Doris M. Sahling was born icon July 7, 1922 in Kenesaw, Nebraska to Calvin H. & Lulu (Hoppe) Hartwig. She graduated from Kenesaw High School and taught elementary school in a one room schoolhouse. On August 15, 1942, she married Clinton J. Sahling in Mankato, Kansas. She then worked in POW camp near Atlanta, Nebraska during WWII and was featured in Nebraska Public Television documentary about the camp. They moved to Hastings, Nebraska in 1946. She was the business manager and bookkeeper for Foote Medical Clinic for 20 years. She was a member & Trustee at First Presbyterian Church, a member of Church Circle #4, life member and past president of P.T.A., 4-H leader, O.E.S. Acacia Chapter #39, American Legion Auxiliary. They moved to Lincoln, Nebraska in 2002.

Merle Alexandria Erickson

Former Hastings resident, Merle A. Erickson, 91, of Clear Lake, Iowa, died Sunday, March 17, 2002 at Manly Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Manly, Iowa.

Services will be Wednesday, March 20, 2002;10:00 A.M. at the First Baptist Church, 401 N. Lincoln, with Rev. Mark Farris and Rev. Thomas Murray officiating. Burial will be in Hordville Cemetery, Hordville, Nebraska at 2:00 P.M.

Merle A. Erickson was born icon January 17, 1911 in Hordville, Nebraska to Carl & Jennie (Larson) Johnson. She graduated from Hordville High School in 1927 and married Virgil Erickson in Hordville, Nebraska on June 7, 1934. He preceded her in death in 1976. They moved to Grand Island, Nebraska from Hordville in 1940 and to Hastings, Nebraska in 1942. She worked at Hastings Senior High School in the cafeteria and later at Custom Pack for 25 years. She was a member of First Baptist Church and held many church offices.

Merle A. Erickson was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Virgil, step mother, Esther Johnson, 1 daughter, Kathryn and 1 brother, Donald.

Riley Howard Smith

Riley Howard Smith, 85, of 1235 N. Laird #106, died Wednesday, March 20, 2002 at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital.

Services will be Saturday, March 23, 2002; 10:00 A.M. at First Presbyterian Church with Dr. Carl W. Utley, Rev. Matt Nieman and Rev. Blake Tiemann officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery, Hastings, Nebraska.

Riley Howard Smith was born icon November 7, 1916 in Glenvil, Nebraska. As a child, he lived with his parents, Roy & Ethel (Greenfield) Smith on a farm east of Hastings that later became part of the Naval Ammunition Depot. He moved to Hastings, Nebraska and graduated from Hastings High School in 1934. On November 29, 1940, he married Irva Bierhaus and began working for Dutton Lainson until 1948. From 1950 until 1960, they farmed east of Hastings where the current Co-op plants are located. They moved back into Hastings and owned Smith Insurance Agency from 1962 until his retirement in 1982. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church where he was a Deacon, Elder & Session member, Masonic Lodge 50, 32nd degree Scottish Rite, Tehama Temple, longtime Kiwanian and past president, Adams County Extension Service board member, Central NE Gun Club, NE State Trap Association and Holiday Rambler Club, State & National Clubs.

Riley Howard Smith was preceded in death by his parents.

William C.'Bill' Coats

William C. ‘Bill’ Coats, 82, a rural farmer, of 2770 N. Liberty Ave., Juniata, Nebraska, died Monday, March 18, 2002 at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital.

Services will be Friday, March 22, 2002; 10:00 A.M. at Butler-Volland Chapel with Rev. Thomas Murray officiating. Burial with military rites will be in Juniata Cemetery, Juniata, Nebraska.

William C. ‘Bill’ Coats was born icon February 24, 1920 in Juniata, Nebraska to William J. & Anna (Woolington) Coats. He graduated from Juniata High School, Juniata, Nebraska in 1939. He served in the United States Army during WWII from January 26, 1942 to December 29, 1945. He was staff sergeant in the South West Pacific for 3 years. On January 22, 1946, he married Beverly Gangwish at Juniata, Nebraska. He was a charter member of the Juniata American Legion Post #365. He was a stockholder in the Farmers Union Co-op Gas & Oil and Heartland Co-op of Juniata. He was a volunteer fireman and a past member of the Juniata Chamber of Commerce. He was the owner of Coats Implement in Hastings, Nebraska and coached Little League, Big League and Junior Legion Baseball for almost 20 years. He was a member of Juniata Community Church.

William C. ‘Bill’ Coats was preceded in death by his parents, a son Jack; daughter Jean, an infant brother, Joseph and granddaughter, Theresa.
