Dorothy M. Stoughton, 84, of 505 Lane D, Hastings, Nebraska died Friday, January 4, 2002 at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital, Hastings, Nebraska.

Services will be Tuesday, January 8, 2002; 10:30 A.M. at the United Methodist Church, Bladen, Nebraska with Rev. Carroll Plisek officiating. Burial will be in East Lawn Cemetery, Bladen, Nebraska.

Dorothy M. Stoughton was born icon November 7, 1917 in Blue Hill, Nebraska to Julius & Anna (Koepke) Kottwitz. On November 6, 1937 she married Tommy Stoughton and he preceded her in death on February 8, 2000. She was a homemaker and a member of the United Methodist Church of Bladen, Nebraska. She moved to Hastings in 1997 coming from Bladen.

Dorothy M. Stoughton was preceded in death by her parents, husband Tommy Stoughton, 4 sisters, 5 brothers and 1 grandson Todd Hoevet.

Survivors include,

Yula Mae 'Babe' Conway

Yula Mae ‘Babe’ Conway, 91, of #15 Village Drive, Hastings, Nebraska, died Tuesday, March 5, 2002 at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital.

Rosary will be Saturday, March 9, 2002; 9:30 A.M. at St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church with Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 10:00 A.M. with Father Larry Gyhra officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery, Hastings, Nebraska.

Yula Mae ‘Babe’ Conway was born icon July 29, 1910 in Dayton, Ohio, to Henry H. & Helen (Smith) Conover. She was a sportswear buyer and professional model for Rickes Cumler for 10 years, retiring in 1942. She was also merchandise manager at Kerr’s in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma before moving to Hastings, Nebraska in 1949. On June 12, 1955, she married James D. Conway and he preceded her in death on May 8, 1990. She was a member of St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church, Altar Society, Mary Lanning Hospital Auxiliary where she served as manager of the ‘Pink Elephant’, Infant Welfare and Hastings Civic Symphony.

Yula Mae ‘Babe’ Conway was preceded in death by her parents and husband, James.

Dr. Victor J. Young

Dr. Victor J. Young, Physicist, Professor Emeritus of CUNY and Queensboro College, a Sperry-Rand research engineer and former Vice-president of Hazeltine, died March 1, 2002 at Eastern Long Island Hospital in Greenport, NY. He was 88 years old and a resident of Greenport Village and Hastings, Nebraska.

Born in Albion, Michigan on April 11, 1913 to Dean C. Young and Katherine Raub, he was graduated Summa Cum Laude from Albion College and received his Masters and Doctorate from the University of Iowa. While at the University, the PHI BETA KAPPA member, met Margaret Brandt of Hastings, Michigan and they married in June of 1940.

Dr. Young was the author of the book, “Understanding microwaves” and was a member of the team that developed the cyclotron. He was also proud to be an Eagle Scout.

The Young’s spent their retirement years traveling extensively throughout the world. They would select a location they wished to visit and would then spend two months living there. Among the countries they visited were China, Germany, Japan, Austria, Australia, France, Jamaica, Italy, the Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, Canada and Iran.

Formerly a fifty year resident of Port Washington, L.I., NY, he was a member of the First United Methodist Church there and upon moving to Greenport Village in July of 2001, he became a member of the Greenport United Methodist Church.

In Hastings, Dr. Young lived at 834 North St. Joseph and was the owner of property at Lake Hastings and the farm in Glenvil that is operated by the Hinrichs family.

Preceded in death by his wife on December 30, 1998; he leaves his sons, Jan Brandt Young and wife Mary Henry Young, Port Washington, Wisconsin and Donald J Young and wife, Dr. JoAnn Frazer Young, Cutchogue, NY; grandchildren, Alice Serra, Tom Young and great-grandchildren, Julia and Joseph Serra and his beloved cat, LaPorte.

Graveside services will be Thursday, March 7, 10:00 A.M. in Parkview Cemetery, Hastings, Nebraska. Friends and family may gather at Butler-Volland Funeral Home prior to graveside services.

Thyra A. Hulsker

Former Hastings resident, Thyra A. Hulsker, 85, of 10101 Palmeras Dr. #234, Sun City, Arizona, died Sunday, March 10, 2002 at John C. Lincoln Hospital, Phoenix, Arizona.

Services will be Saturday, March 16, 2002; 10:30 A.M. at First Presbyterian Chapel with Rev. Matt Nieman officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery, Hastings, Nebraska.

Thyra A. Hulsker was born icon October 9, 1916 in Kearney, Nebraska to Albert Lee & Rhea (Smith) Moore. She graduated from Minden High School, Minden, Nebraska and attended the University of Nebraska, Lincoln and passed the Pharmacy exam. She married Edwin Fay Hulsker on September 7, 1937. She was in charge of Mary Lanning Pharmacy from 1947-1948. They opened Fay’s Hastings Drug Store in Hastings in 1948 and continued ownership for 30 years.

Thyra A. Hulsker was preceded in death by her parents and 1 brother, LaGrant Moore.

Survivors include,

Sons: William ‘Bill’ Hulsker - Grosse Pointe, MI
Richard ‘Dick’ Hulsker - Sunnyvale, CA

Esther H. Jackson

Esther H. Jackson, 89, of 1711 Bateman, died Monday, March 11, 2002 at her home.

Services will be Monday, March 18, 2002; 1:00 P.M. at the Church of The Nazarene with Rev. David Speicher and Rev. Dick Tschetter officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery, Hastings, Nebraska.

Esther H. Jackson was born icon October 1, 1912 in Columbus, Nebraska to Gustav & Othilia (Schachtschneider) Garber. She married Cecil J. Jackson on April 10, 1939 in Columbus, Nebraska. They moved from Columbus to Hastings, Nebraska in 1942. She was a homemaker, a member of the Church of the Nazarene and the Missionary Society.

Esther H. Jackson was preceded in death by her parents and brothers, Gus Jr. and Robert Garber and three grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.

Zella L. Farnsworth

Zella (L’Heureux) Farnsworth, 83, of Perkins Manor, died Wednesday, March 13, 2002 at Perkins Pavilion.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, March 16, 2002; 10:30 A.M. St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church with Father Larry Gyhra officiating. Private family interment will be at a later date.

Zella L. Farnsworth was born icon December 23, 1918 in Campbell, Nebraska to Hector & Elizabeth (Boudreau) L’Heureux. She graduated from Campbell High School, Campbell, Nebraska and attended nurses training school in Wichita, Kansas. She was a nurse at Lovelace Hospital in Albuquerque, New Mexico for over 20 years. She married David Doucette and he preceded her in death in 1983. She later married Ken Farnsworth and he preceded her in death in 2001. She moved from Larned, Kansas to Hastings, Nebraska in 1997. She was a member of St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church, Altar Society and several nursing organizations.

Zella L. Farnsworth was preceded in death by her parents, 2 brothers, Leon & Joseph L’Heureux, 1 son, Donald Doucette and an infant daughter.

Survivors include,

Lila M. Pritchard, 88, of Perkins Pavilion, died Thursday, March 21, 2002 at Perkins Pavilion.

Graveside services and burial will be Saturday, March 23, 2002; 10:30 A.M. at Parkview Cemetery, Hastings, Nebraska with Rev. Arthur Schakat officiating. Family and friends may meet at Butler-Volland Funeral Home 10:00 A.M. Saturday.

Lila M. Pritchard was born icon February 6, 1914 in Campbell, Nebraska to Charles & Margaret (Lang) Rhine. She moved to Bladen, Nebraska with her family and received her education in the Bladen School, graduating from Bladen High School in 1932. On August 5, 1951, she married Rev. Nathan Pritchard in Bloomfield, Nebraska and he preceded her in death in 1968. She moved from Guide Rock, Nebraska to Hastings, Nebraska in 1963. She was a long time member of the Methodist Church.

Lila M. Pritchard was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Rev. Nathan Pritchard and a brother, Calvin Rhine.

Edna L. M. Carper, 91, of 7540 W. Powerline Rd, Ayr, Nebraska, died March 24, 2002 at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital.

Services will be Wednesday, March 27, 2002; 2:00 P.M. at Immanuel Lutheran Church southwest of Hastings, Nebraska. Burial will be in Immanuel Lutheran Churchyard Cemetery.

Edna L. M. Carper was born icon April 4, 1910 in Adams County, southwest of Hastings, Nebraska to Charles & Louise (Gartner) Bunde. She married DeVerde Carper in Adams County, on February 19, 1939 and he preceded her in death in 1985. She was a homemaker and a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. She was a life long area resident.

Edna L. M. Carper was preceded in death by her parents, husband, DeVerde, 2 sisters and 9 brothers.

Survivors include,

Ivan E. Hohnstein, 81, of 1005 Hewett, died Thursday, April 4, 2002 at his home.

Services will be Monday, April 8, 2002; 10:30 A.M. at First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Matt Nieman & Dr. Carl W. Utley officiating. Burial with military rites will be in Parkview Cemetery, Hastings, Nebraska.

Ivan E. Hohnstein was born icon December 5, 1920 in Harvard, Nebraska to George L. & Viola (Carriker) Hohnstein. He graduated from Harvard High School and served in the United States Army during WWII from September 2, 1942 to October 12, 1945. On March 13, 1946, he married Druella Rose. He was a salesman for Gambles and Tempo. He was a life long area resident and a member of First Presbyterian Church.

Ivan E. Hohnstein was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Terry.
