Former Roseland resident, Luella Agnes Horton, 88 of Perkins Pavilion, died Saturday, June 8, 2002 at Perkins Pavilion.

Rosary service will be Wednesday, June 12, 2002; 10:30 A.M. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Roseland, Nebraska. Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:00 A.M. with Father Thomas Au officiating. Burial will be in Roseland Cemetery, Roseland, Nebraska

Luella Agnes Horton was born icon October 30, 1913 in Campbell, Nebraska to Harvey & Josephine (Nollette) LaPorte. She graduated from high school and married Raymond Horton in Roseland, Nebraska in October 22, 1935. He preceded her in death in 1989. She was a homemaker and a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and its Altar Society in Roseland, Nebraska.

Luella Agnes Horton was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Raymond and 2 sisters.

Mable E. Banta

Former Hastings resident, Mable E. Banta, 94, of Blakely, Pennsylvania, died Sunday, June 9, 2002 at her home.

Graveside service and burial will be Monday, June 17, 2002; 10:00 A.M. at Parkview Cemetery with Rev. Dr. Sam Rathod officiating.

Mable E. Banta was born icon August 17, 1907 in Hartington, Nebraska to George W. & Blanche (Burnie) Jones. She graduated from high school and married Jeff R. Banta. He preceded her in death in 1994. Moving from Omaha, Nebraska in 1943, her family was one of the first to settle in Spencer Park as Jeff was a fire fighter employed at the Naval Ammunition Depot. She was active in starting the first Girl Scout Troop at Spencer Park. In 1954, the Banta’s moved into Hastings, Nebraska where she continued her membership in the Methodist church which she had joined in 1922. She was honored in 1998 for her 75 years of membership. Upon Jeff’s retirement as Deputy State Fire Marshall, they moved to Good Samaritan Village where she lived until their daughter, Janyce Larsen, died in January of 2000. She then moved to Blakely, Pennsylvania to be closer to her remaining children.

Mable E. Banta was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Jeff, son, Richard, daughter, Janyce Larsen, three brothers, Irwin, Alton and Dale Jones and 2 sisters,
Marjorie McCarthy and Maxine Willis.

Survivors include,

Brother: Roger Jones - Omaha, NE

Beulah Grace Thaut

Hastings resident, Beulah Grace Thaut, 85, of 519 So. Sewell, died Wednesday, June 12, 2002 at her home.

No visitation or services. Private family interment at a later date.

Beulah Grace Thaut was born icon January 18, 1917 in Rulo, Nebraska to Mel & Dora (Speers) Martin. At the age of 7 she moved with her family from Rulo to Hastings. She attended Hastings school and married Carl Thaut. He preceded her in death in 1981. She worked from 1969 to 1973 at the Ordinance Plant in Grand Island, Nebraska. She was a homemaker and a member of New York Avenue Congregational Church, AARP and the NRA.

Beulah Grace Thaut was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Carl 1 sister and a granddaughter.

Leo J. Purvis

Leo J. Purvis, 63, of 202 N. Railroad, Deweese, Nebraska, died Friday, June 14, 2002 at his home.

Rosary will be Tuesday, June 18, 2002; 10:30 A.M. with Mass of Christian Burial to follow at St. Michael’s Catholic Church with Father Michael Houlihan officiating. Burial will be in Grand Island Cemetery, Grand Island, Nebraska.

Leo J. Purvis was born icon August 17, 1938 in Grand Island, Nebraska to Leo & Vernie (Skibinski) Woitaszewski. He was later adopted by Fred Purvis. He attended schools in Grand Island, Nebraska. On April 20, 1960, he married Nellie Kemplin in Grand Island, Nebraska and they later divorced. He was a refrigeration engineer for Armour Food Company, Hastings, Nebraska. He was a member of Eagle’s Club in Grand Island and a life long area resident.

Leo J. Purvis was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Melvin, 2 sisters, Wanda & Ernestine and 4 nephews.

Hastings resident, Helen M. Porterfield, 93, of the Regency, 1235 N. Laird, died Saturday, June 15, 2002 at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital.

Rosary will be Monday, June 17, 2002; 7:30 P.M. at Butler-Volland Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday, June 18, 2002; 1:00 P.M. at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Hastings, Nebraska with Father Michael Houlihan officiating. Burial will be in Holy Family Cemetery, Heartwell, Nebraska.

Helen M. Porterfield was born icon January 29, 1909 in Adams County, Nebraska to John & Mae (Keiffe) Wynn. She graduated from Hastings High School and married Hugh ‘Butch’ Porterfield in January 1929. They moved to the Kearney County area. He preceded her in death in 1952. She worked for Geyerman’s Clothing Store, was a nurses’ aide at Hastings Regional Center and worked at the Kenesaw Haven Home. She was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church, the Altar Society and Crosier Apostolate. She was a life long Adams County and Kearney County area resident.

Helen M. Porterfield was preceded in death by her parents, husband, ‘Butch’, 1 son, Jerry Porterfield, 2 grandsons, Gary Ellis & Billy Porterfield, a great grandson, James Porterfield, 2 sisters and 4 brothers.

Lester Carl Mohling

Former Glenvil resident, Lester Carl Mohling, 80, of Veteran’s Home, Grand Island, Nebraska, died Monday, June 17, 2002 at the VA Nebraska-Western Iowa Health Care System, Grand Island, Nebraska.

Service will be Friday, June 21, 2002; 10:30 A.M. at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Glenvil, Nebraska, with Interim Pastors Bonnie & Les Larsen officiating. Burial with military rites by Glenvil American Legion Post 26 will be in Glenvil Cemetery, Glenvil, Nebraska.

Lester Carl Mohling was born icon December 19, 1921 on the family farm north of Hastings, Nebraska to Herman A. & Emma B. (Hagemeister) Mohling. He attended grade school at rural District #33 and Hastings High School. He attended a vocational technical school in Bellevue, Nebraska. He served in the United States Army during WWII from July 1942 to 1946 and again during the Korean War form 1950-1953. He married Verna Rose Wiese on June 11, 1950 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Hastings, Nebraska. He later joined the Nebraska Army National Guards and was retired in 1981 with 32 years of service. In civilian life, he was a carpenter and utilities maintenance for the village of Glenvil, Nebraska for 20 years. He was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Hastings, Nebraska and Immanuel Lutheran Church in Glenvil, Nebraska. He was also a member of Eagles #592 in Hastings, AARP and a life member of American Legion Post #26 in Glenvil. He was a past member of V.F.W. and United Commercial Travelers.

Lester Carl Mohling was preceded in death by his parents, wife Verna, 3 brothers, 2 infant brothers and Lt. Col. Kenneth E. Mohling (Ret.).

Delbert L. Stromer

Former Hastings resident, Delbert L. Stromer, 84, of Hamilton Manor, Aurora, Nebraska, died Wednesday, June 19, 2002 at Hamilton Manor.

Services will be Saturday, June 22, 2002; 10:00 A.M. at First St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Hastings, Nebraska with Pastor Sacia Vik officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery, Hastings, Nebraska.

Delbert L. Stromer was born icon June 22, 1917 on the family farm in rural Adams County, Nebraska to William E. & Sarah J. (Harrenstein) Stromer. He attended school at District 23 in rural Adams County. Delbert married Elsie M. Juedeman on August 15, 1939 at Glenvil, Nebraska and she preceded him in death on January 24, 1998. Delbert farmed his entire life in rural Adams and Hall counties. He was actively involved in his church as a choir member, church council, usher, finance committee, 4-H leader, NRD committee man and Mary Lanning Auxiliary member. Delbert enjoyed people, baseball, traveling, bowling, fishing, playing cards and being involved with his grandchildren.

Delbert L. Stromer was preceded in death by his parents, wife Elsie Stromer, 5 brothers, Dick, Reinhard, Alvin, Paul and William Stromer and son-in-law Lynn Lautenschlager.

Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery, Hastings, Nebraska

Donald L. ‘Don’ Maul was born icon March 28, 1937 in Hastings, Nebraska to Edmund & Stacia (Dusatko) Maul. He graduated from Hastings Senior High School in 1955 and married Gwendolyn ‘Peach’ Albers on July 13, 1956. She preceded him in death April 25, 1984. He was owner and operator of a floor installation company. On August 11, 1995, he married Jo (Andrews) Michel. He was a member of St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and Elks Meadowbrook Golf. He was a life long Hastings resident.

Donald L. ‘Don’ Maul was preceded in death by his parents and 1st wife, Gwendolyn ‘Peach’ Maul.

Benjamin Franklin McAllister

Hastings resident, Benjamin Franklin McAllister, 90 of 1520 W. 9th, died Friday, June 21, 2002 at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital

Services will be Monday, June 24, 2002; 10:00 A.M. at Butler-Volland Chapel with Rev. Dr. Sam Rathod officiating. Burial will be Monday, June 24, 2002; 3:00 P.M. MST at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Imperial, Nebraska with Rev. Michael Laing officiating.

Benjamin F. McAllister was born icon March 14, 1912 in Pine River, Minnesota, the youngest son of Peter and Edna B. (Ehler) McAllister. He graduated from High School in Pine River, Minnesota. Ben & his mother moved near Imperial, Nebraska in 1929. He worked on a farm and ranch until 1933, when they moved into the town of Imperial. He worked at whatever he could find, as money was scare and jobs were few. In the summer of 1934, he joined the Civilian Conservation Corporation. He went to Arkansas for 13 months to work then returned to Nebraska. He went into road construction work, driving trucks for other people. He bought his first truck in 1937 and worked hauling gravel and dirt for the State of Nebraska. He married Grace Jeanette Wetherby on June 8, 1938 in Oshkosh, Nebraska. He continued to work on road jobs in western Nebraska from 1938-1940. Ben, Jr. was born icon August 14, 1940. The family returned to Imperial where Ben engaged in trucking locally by hauling grain and livestock. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church where he was active in Methodist Youth Fellowship as a sponsor and driver for their trips. He was a volunteer fireman for 25 years and received his 25 year pin from the Imperial Fire Department. He was also a member of Independent Order of Odd Fellows and Isaac Walton League all in Imperial, Nebraska. He was an avid hunter and golfer. In 1964, they moved to Hastings, Nebraska where he worked for Werner Construction, driving truck until the age of 65, retiring after having driven over 800,000 safe miles in 14 years. From 1972-1989, they spent their winters in Arizona and stayed home to get better acquainted with their grandchildren. After retirement, Ben drove cars for Spady Motors. He was a member of First United Methodist Church.
