Corwin J. "Hargy" Hargleroad
Corwin J. ‘Hargy’ Hargleroad, 94 of Perkins Pavilion, Good Samaritan Village, died Sunday, August 25, 2002 at Perkins Pavilion.
Services will be Thursday, August 29, 2002; 10:30 A.M. at First Congregational United Church of Christ with Pastor Karen Robak officiating. Burial with Masonic Rites will be in Parkview Cemetery, both in Hastings, Nebraska.
Corwin J. ‘Hargy’ Hargleroad was born
January 5, 1908 in Furnas County, Nebraska to Robert & Marie (Stethem) Hargleroad. He graduated from Hastings High School in 1926 and began working for A.M. Dutton (which is now Dutton-Lainson). It was during that time, he met Dorothea Gettman. They were married on September 24, 1930 and she preceded him in death . In 1932, he worked for the Fleet Foote Oil Company and Started Hargleroad Transportation in 1933. In 1940, he bought Overland Transport’s Iowa Authority and started hauling petroleum products in Iowa. He served in the United States Army from 1942 to 1943. He returned to Hastings, Nebraska and was assigned by the U.S. Manpower Commission to the Naval Ammunition Depot. In 1945, he received his release from the NAD and purchased the Fergus Transfer Company. From 1943 to 1965, he owned and operated Hargleroad Van & Storage Company. He was part owner/operator of H & M Equipment for more than 10 years. He served on the Central Nebraska Public Power and Irrigation District’s Board of Directors. He served on the Hastings City Council, was president of Motor Carriers’ Association form 1968-1970. He was president of the United Transporters of Petroleum Products. Hargleroad’s conservation efforts on his own farm were recognized in 1951, when he won a soil conservation plaque for the Omaha World Herald. He was a member of First congregational United Church of Christ, American Legion, past director of the four States Irrigation Council, former member of the Hastings Chamber of Commerce and past president of the Jeffrey Lake Development Association. He belonged to numerous Masonic bodies, including Lodge #317, Scottish Rite, Royal and Select Masters-Council No.8, Mt. Nebo Commandry No. 11, Royal Arch masons Chapter No. 21, 32nd Degree Mason, Tehama Temple, The Cabiri and Royal Order of Jesters Court No 152. He was Potentate of the Tehama Temple in 1954. He was an active member of church, serving many years as trustee.

Former Hastings resident, Georgia V. Schmale, 91, of Blue Hill Care Center died Thursday, August 22, 2002 at the Blue Hill Care Center, Blue Hill, Nebraska.
Memorial service Friday, September 6, 2002; 11:00 A.M. at First Presbyterian Chapel with Dr. Carl W. Utley officiating. Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, both in Hastings, Nebraska.
Georgia V. Schmale was born
September 18, 1910 in Cowles, Nebraska to John N. & Charlotte (Brimmer) Hutchins. She graduated from Red Cloud High School, Red Cloud, Nebraska and from Kearney State College, Kearney, Nebraska. She married Carl F. Schmale on August 15, 1939 in Red Cloud, Nebraska. She was an elementary school teacher in rural Webster & Franklin counties including Campbell, Nebraska and Blue Hill, Nebraska schools. They moved from Campbell, Nebraska to Hastings, Nebraska in 1968. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Hastings, Nebraska and was a Mary Lanning Auxiliary volunteer.

Former Hastings resident, Ronald E. Shay, 56, of Rt #1, Box 159, Ord, Nebraska, died Tuesday, August 20, 2002 in a semi truck accident near Palmer, Nebraska.
Services will be Friday, August 23, 2002; 10:00 A.M. at Butler-Volland Chapel with Father Michael Houlihan officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery, all in Hastings, Nebraska.
Ronald E. Shay was born
September 28, 1945 in Hastings, Nebraska to Lester & Thelma (Crawford) Shay. He grew up in Ayr, Nebraska and graduated from Blue Hill High School, Blue Hill, Nebraska in 1963. He married Mary Kay Krebsbach on January 24, 1967and they later divorced. He then married Shari Kelley in 1987 and they later divorced. He worked for Roberts Dairy for 20 years in Hastings and Grand Island, Nebraska. He moved to Central City, Nebraska and then to Ord, Nebraska. He was currently employed with Double O Trucking Company of Columbus, Nebraska. He was a past member of the Eagles and Nebraska National Guard.

May 9, 1909 in Downs, Kansas to the late Earl & Nina (Yost) Donahey. She graduated from Hastings Business School and was a 50+ year employee of Dutton-Lainson Company, serving in a corporate officer capacity as Assistant Secretary. She married Jess McClelland Gillespie and he preceded her in death on September 6, 1985. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Church Circle and Eastern Star.

Blake Calvin Mankin, 79, of 1607 Apache Avenue, died Wednesday, August 14, 2002 at Perkins Pavilion.
Services will be Saturday, August 17, 2002; 2:00 P.M. at Zion Lutheran Church with Rev. Donald E. Boeschen & Rev. Robert Harms officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Hastings, Nebraska.
Blake C. Mankin was born
August 8, 1923 in Clay County, near Trumbull, Nebraska to Clinton & Trella (Phelps) Mankin. He graduated from Trumbull High School, Trumbull, Nebraska in 1941. Following graduation, he worked on a combine crew, following the wheat harvest from Texas to Canada. On August 15, 1954, he married Dorothy Koch at Zion Lutheran Church, Hastings, Nebraska. He was a lifetime area farmer in Adams, Clay and Hamilton counties. He moved to Adams County in 1954. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and the Endowment Committee. He was a former elder at Zion, served on the Stewardship, Evangelism and Church Building Committees. He was also a Sunday School teacher and member of the Choir. He was a member of the American Corn Growers Association. He was a former member and chairman of Adams County Heart Association and the Adams County Soil Conservation Service. In addition, he was a former member of Nebraska Elected County Committeeman, Adams Central School Board and Adams County Extension Board. He was former licensed realtor with Town & Country Realty.

Rita Jean Vacek was born
September 18, 1933 in Hastings, Nebraska to Francis Walter ‘Walt’ & Ella (Cornelius) Brannigan. She graduated from St. Cecilia High School in 1951. On December 26, 1952, she married Joseph F. Vacek and they later divorced. She was a homemaker and a secretary for the Transportation Department at Central Community College for 26 years, retiring in 1999. She was a member of St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church and a past member of the Altar Society.

Jerome L. Tillemans, Sr. was born
November 23, 1928 in Milbank, South Dakota to Henry & Petronella (Croymans) Tillemans. He graduated from Milbank High School in 1946. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War from April 6, 1951 to April 4, 1953. In June of 1954, he married Jolietta C. Boesch and she preceded him in death on September 6, 1994. He worked in construction and moved from Elm Creek, Nebraska to Good Samaritan Village Hastings, Nebraska after the death of his wife. In 1996, he moved to the Nebraska Veterans Home, Grand Island, Nebraska. He was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Hastings, Nebraska.

Robert D. ‘Bob’ Rodgers, 77, of The Kensington, 233 N. Hastings, died Sunday, August 4, 2002 at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital.
Rosary service will be Thursday, August 8, 2002; 7:30 P.M. at Butler-Volland Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, August 9, 2002; 10:00 A.M. at St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church, with Father Larry Gyhra officiating. Robert D. ‘Bob’ Rodgers was born
February 5, 1925 in Washington, DC. to Henry & Catherine M. (Di Camillo) Rodgers. He was in the United States Marine Corps during WWII from 12-1-1942 to 10-28-1945, serving in the Pacific and was a maintenance chief for a squadron of Marine fighter pilots. His unit saw action on Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands, Iwo Jima, Midway and the Philippines. He was a staff sergeant when he was honorably discharged. He married Catherine ‘Kay’ Horan in 1946 in Washington, DC and she preceded him in death on July 20, 2001. He came to Hastings, Nebraska in 1946 and entered the men’s clothing business. He was vice president of Ben Sherman’s when the store was destroyed by the gas explosion in February of 1979. After living 33 years in Hastings, Nebraska, they moved to Lincoln, Nebraska to continue his career in retail men’s wear. They then moved to Topeka, Kansas for 15 years, where they lived until the death of his wife. He moved to The Kensington, Hastings, Nebraska where he was currently residing. He was Past Exalted Ruler of the Hastings Elks Lodge, a member of the local VFW Post and a former member of the Hastings Jaycees.
