Miss Jane W. Bell

Jane Wilson Bell, 90, of 233 N. Hastings, The Kensington, died Thursday, January 9, 2003 at Perkins Pavilion, Hastings, Nebraska.

Services will be Monday, January 13, 2003; 10:00 A.M. at First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Dr. James P. Cooke officiating. Burial will follow at 2:00 P.M. at Ord City Cemetery, Ord, Nebraska with Rev. Dr. J. Paul Cook, M.D. officiating.

Jane Wilson Bell was born icon May 23, 1912 in Valley County, a few miles south of Ord, Nebraska to Oliver ‘Ollie’ Perry Rugh & Alice Brown (Gray) Bell. She was the middle of three children. Her brothers, both deceased, were Rev. Moore Gray Bell & Dr. Gordon Dale Bell. Moore was a Presbyterian minister. Gordon was a physician, and in retirement, served in mission work in South America. She grew up in Mira Valley. She and her family were very active in Wilson Presbyterian Church in Mira Valley. That church closed in 1926. Jane’s father purchased the church building and the manse. He tore them down and transported the lumber to Hastings, Nebraska where he used the lumber and his skills as a carpenter to build the house and garage that still stand at 1103 E. 9th Street. The family moved into that house. Jane has lived in Hastings from that time until her death. Jane finished her high school education at Hastings College, where she (and her brother Gordon) was one of the students in a laboratory high school for teacher training. Then she secured her degree in nursing from Mary Lanning Nurses School, later going to Hastings College to earn her bachelor’s degree. She was a surgical nurse for many years at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings, Nebraska and later a nurse at the medical complex at Ingleside, just west of Hastings. She never married, but felt very close to her brother’s families and other members of her larger family. She shared an apartment all her adult life with her good friend Miss Sarita Wilson. Jane was a dedicated member of First Presbyterian Church during all of her Hastings years.

Jane W. Bell was preceded in death by her parents and 2 brothers.

Mary Sears Smith

Area resident, Mary Sears Smith, 84 died Wednesday, January 8, 2003 at Rosebrook Care Center, Edgar, Nebraska.

Private family services will be held.

Mary Sears Smith was born icon August 5, 1918 in Campbell, Nebraska to Fred & Ema (Specht) Sears. She graduated from Edgar High School, Edgar, Nebraska and from Hastings Business College in 1940. She was a long time employee of the Federal Government having worked in Washington D.C., Milwaukee, Wisconsin & Chicago, Illinois. She worked in Kobe, Japan from 1947-1948. In 1949, she moved to Louisville, Kentucky where she married Colonel Judson Smith. They moved back to Kobe, Japan where Colonel Smith was base commander from 1950-1953. In 1953, they moved to Cincinnati, Ohio and retired to Lincoln, Nebraska in 1960. Colonel Judson Smith preceded her in death in 1988. She moved to Hastings, Nebraska in 1995 and to Rosebrook Care Center in 1999.

She was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, Lincoln, Nebraska and was active in Abendmusik Choir of First Plymouth Congregational Church in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Mary Sears Smith was preceded in death by her mother, Ema Lyons, her father, Fred Sears and her husband, Colonel Judson Smith.

Survivors include,

Memorial may be given to the campaign fund for the next European tour of the Abendmusik Choir at First Plymouth Congregational Church-Lincoln.

Connie S. Norden

Fairfield resident, Connie S. Norden, 51, of 406 ‘B’ Street, died Tuesday, January 7, 2003 at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital, due to cancer.

Services will be Friday, January 10. 2003; 2:00 P.M. at Butler-Volland Chapel with Rev. Earl Higgins officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery, Hastings, Nebraska.

Connie S. Norden was born icon September 6, 1951 in Hebron, Nebraska to Leo & Evelyn (Holtzen) Grueber. She graduated from Nelson High School, Nelson, Nebraska in 1969. She married Jim Miller in 1969 and in 1993 they divorced. She worked at the Hastings Regional Center for many years and was the Activities Coordinator. On October 4, 1997, she married Bill Norden. She was a lifetime area resident.

Connie S. Norden was preceded in death by her brother, Randy Grueber.

Wilma I. Pederson

Hastings resident, Wilma I. Pederson, 92, of 906 E. 6th St. died Monday, January 6, 2003 at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital.

Services will be Saturday, January 11, 2003; 11:00 A.M. at Butler-Volland Chapel with Rev. John L. Ross officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery, Hastings, Nebraska.

Wilma I. Pederson was born icon March 4, 1910 in Gayville, South Dakota to James C. & Grace (Benthin) Clark. She graduated from Vermillion High School, Vermillion, South Dakota. On August 1939, she married Delmar ‘Pete’ Pederson in Sioux City, Iowa. They lived in several communities until moving to Hastings, Nebraska in 1945. They established Cash-Way Candy Company in 1945 and later expanded the business to Grand Island, Nebraska. They also opened York Wholesale in York, Nebraska. She served as the corporate secretary/treasurer until the death of her husband in 1997. She was a past member of the Nebraska Heart Association.

Wilma I. Pederson was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Pete, 1 daughter, Sally Wanek, 2 grandchildren, Michael Baker & Rebecca Pederson and a sister, Twila Harrington.

Fred A. Tripp Jr., 54, of Lincoln, Nebraska, died Saturday, January 4, 2003 at Bryan LGH Medical Center East, Lincoln, Nebraska.

Masonic services will be Thursday, January 9, 2003; 10:00 A.M. at Butler-Volland Chapel, Hastings, Nebraska. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery, Hastings, Nebraska.

Fred A. Tripp Jr. was born icon April 9, 1948 at Davenport, Iowa to Fred T. & Leona J. (Reiche) Tripp. He graduated from Phoenixville Area High School in 1966, Phoenixville, Pennsylvania and from Hastings College in 1971, Hastings, Nebraska. He was a District Manager for Finocchiaro Wine Company of Omaha, Nebraska. He was a member of Hastings Lodge #50 A. F. & A. M., Scottish Rite, Tehama Shrine Temple and was Director of Ceremonies for many years, all of Hastings, Nebraska.

Fred A. Tripp Jr. was preceded in death by his father, Fred T. Tripp.

Luther D. Schmidt

Luther D. Schmidt, 81, of 407 Hillside Dr. died Friday, January 3, 2003 at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital.

Services will be Wednesday, January 8, 2003; 11:00 A.M. at Zion Lutheran Church with Pastor Dan Heuer officiating. Burial with military rites will be in Parkview Cemetery, both in Hastings, Nebraska.

Luther D. Schmidt was born icon August 22, 1921 in Hamilton, Texas to John T. & Elsie (Herderhorst) Schmidt. He graduated from St. John’s Academy in Winfield, Kansas in 1939. He attended Concordia Seminary, St Louis, Missouri from 1942-1943. He served in the United States Army Air Force during WWII from August 18, 1943 until March 2, 1946. On August 22, 1947, he was married to Ilon Josephson at First Lutheran Church, Omaha, Nebraska by Pastor Norman Temme and Pastor John T. Schmidt. He graduated from Concordia Teachers College, Seward, Nebraska in 1948. He was principal at St. Paul Lutheran School, Paducah, Kentucky from 1948-1950. He then pursued his masters degree from the University of Nebraska from 1950-1952. He then became principal at Trinity Lutheran School, Norborne, Missouri from 1952-1957 and from 1957-1966 was a teacher at Zion Lutheran School, St. Louis, Missouri. He was chairman of the St. Louis Teachers’ Conference in 1964. In 1966, he moved to Hastings, Nebraska to become principal of Zion Luther School, Hastings, Nebraska until 1970. In 1971, he initiated and directed all community services for mentally handicapped citizens in a four county area in South Central Nebraska. He was named ‘Citizen of the Year’ by the Nebraska State Association for Retarded Citizens in 1980. He was a member of Association for Retarded Citizens. He was also an active member of Zion Lutheran Church. After retiring, he enjoyed gardening.

Luther D. Schmidt was preceded in death by his parents and 2 sisters, Mildred Morris and Elsie Fry.

Harry Reed

Harry Reed, 64, of 220 N. California Ave., died Friday, January 3, 2003 at his home.

Services will be Wednesday, January 8, 2003; 12:00 noon at Butler-Volland Chapel with Rev. Earl Higgins officiating. Burial will be at a later date.

Harry Reed was born icon August 16, 1938 in Penn Yan, New York to Herbert & Alice (Lucas) Reed. He moved to Hastings, Nebraska in 1979 and worked for Hastings Pork for 12 years. He was also a mechanic and farmer. On July 3, 1995, he married Brenda Dedrick. .

Harry Reed was preceded in death by his parents, 1st wife, Grace (Clark) Reed, daughter, Kim and a son, Tom Reed.

Ida Esther Keier

Ida Esther Kleier, 91, of Perkins Pavilion, died Wednesday, January 1, 2003 at Perkins Pavilion.

Services will be Monday, January 6, 2003; 10:30 A.M. at Christ Lutheran Church with Pastor Greg Volzke officiating. Burial will be in Concordia Cemetery, Christ Lutheran Churchyard, rural Juniata, Nebraska.

Ida Kleier was born icon September 10, 1911 in Adams County, Nebraska to Harm & Anna (Gartner) Johnson. She was baptized on October 17, 1911 and confirmed on May 31, 1925. She graduated from the 8th grade on May 8, 1925 from District #5. At the age of 11, she began playing the organ at St. Matthews Church in Hastings, Nebraska. On December 11, 1929, she married Herman Kleier and he preceded her in death in 1992. She was a homemaker and enjoyed quilting. She was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, Ladies Guild and served on the election board for many years.

Ida Kleier was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Herman, 4 brothers, Hank, Harm, John & Walter and 1 sister, Marie Wortman.
