Private graveside services and burial will be Saturday, March 22, 2003; 2:30 P.M. at Juniata Cemetery, Juniata, Nebraska with Rev. James Miller officiating.

Frances Ruby Pingry was born icon February 17, 1910 in Rosault, North Dakota to Elvis & Blanch (Gowin) Ennen. She married John E. Pingry on June 29, 1929 in Ponca City, Oklahoma and he preceded her in death in 1985. They moved from, Seward, Kansas to Juniata, Nebraska in 1965. She was a homemaker and a member of Juniata Methodist Church.

Frances Ruby Pingry was preceded in death by her parents, husband, John, a daughter-in-law and 4 brothers.

Survivors include,

JoAnn Johnson (Bush)

Former Hastings resident, JoAnn Johnson, 71, of Silvercrest Assisted Living Community, Omaha, Nebraska, died Monday, March 17, 2003 at her home.

Services will be Thursday, March 20, 2003; 9:30 A.M. at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Holstein, Nebraska with Rev. Carl H. Rehwaldt officiating. Burial will be in St. Paul Lutheran Churchyard Cemetery, Holstein, Nebraska. Prayer service Friday, March 21, 2003; 3:00 P.M. at Silvercrest Assisted Living Community, 108th & Q, Omaha, Nebraska.

JoAnn Johnson was born icon August 16, 1931 in Holyoke, Colorado to Archie F. & Leona M. (Hahn) Bush. She moved to Hastings, Nebraska & graduated from Hastings High School and attended Hastings College. On February 25, 1951, she married Robert F. Johnson at First Christian Church in Hastings. She was a long time member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Holstein, where she was superintendent of Sunday School and active in Ladies Aide & DORCAS Society. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Holstein. From 1964 -1971, she and her husband lived in Boulder, Colorado where JoAnn was Sunday School Administrator at Mt. Zion Lutheran Church. In 1971, they moved back to the farm in the Ayr/Roseland area. They moved to Hastings in 1988. For 10 years, she worked in housekeeping at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital. From 1995-2000, they were custodians and members of Faith Lutheran Church in Hastings. In 2000, they moved to Omaha, Nebraska to be nearer to their children. She was currently a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Gretna, Nebraska.

JoAnn Johnson was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Dr. Robert A. Bush.

Hastings resident, Alma Marie Woodward, 89, of Perkins Pavilion, died Saturday, March 15, 2003 at Perkins Pavilion.

Services will be Thursday, March 20, 2003; 2:00 P.M. at Butler-Volland Chapel with Rev. Harold D. Stromer and Pastor Sacia Vik officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Hastings, Nebraska.

Alma Marie Woodward was born icon May 7, 1913 in Ayr, Nebraska to Henry W. & Fannie (Jensen) Gartner. On October 5, 1935, she married Arlo S. Woodward and he preceded her in death on November 26, 2002. They farmed with his father for several years before founding Woodward’s Disposal Company in 1933. She was a homemaker and the bookkeeper at Woodward’s Disposal Company until her retirement. She was a member of First St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and a past member of the Eagles Auxiliary.

Alma Marie Woodward was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Arlo, 3 brothers and 3 sisters.

Vernon L. Hoyt, 94, of Blue Hill Care Center, Blue Hill, Nebraska, died Saturday, March 15, 2003 at Blue Hill Care Center.

Family interment will be Thursday, March 20, 2003; 10:30 A.M. at Massena Center Cemetery, Massena, Iowa with Rev. Don Seeger officiating..

Vernon L. Hoyt was born icon January 11, 1909 in Cumberland, Iowa to James M. & Clara E. (Ferguson) Hoyt. He graduated from Cumberland High School in 1926 and attended University of Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa. He married Bernice L. Tracy on August 12, 1930 and she preceded him in death on August 24, 1988. He was a Copy Editor & Music Critic for the Omaha World Herald from 1946, retiring in 1974. He had also worked for the Lincoln Journal, Lincoln, Nebraska, Omaha Bee News, Omaha, Nebraska and newspapers in Columbus, Nebraska, South Dakota and Oregon. He moved to The Kensington, Hastings, Nebraska in 1999 and later to Blue Hill Care Center, Blue Hill, Nebraska.

Vernon L. Hoyt was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Bernice; son, Richard Hoyt; grandson, Barry Aspengren, 2 brothers, 1 sister and 2 infant sisters.

Survivors include,

Mildred Munroe

Mildred Munroe, 87, of 524 Lane B, Hastings, Nebraska died Friday, March 14, 2003 at her home.

Services will be Monday, March 17, 2003; 1:30 P.M. at First St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, with Pastor Sacia Vik officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Trumbull, Nebraska.

Mildred Munroe was born icon February 16, 1916 in Adams County, Nebraska to Frederick & Anna (Sommerfeldt) Papenhagen. She married Lawrence Munroe on May 8, 1938 and he preceded her in death on February 10, 1991. She was a seamstress at Mode O Day in Hastings. She was a member of First St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, WELCA and Stephen’s Ministry.

Mildred Munroe was preceded in death by her parents, husband Lawrence, 2 brothers Walter and Hugo Papenhagen.

Paul Johnann Friedrick Uden

Paul Johann Friedrick Uden, 80, of 1911 W. 9th, died Friday, March 14, 2003 at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital.

Services will be Thursday, March 20, 2003; 1:00 P.M. at Faith Lutheran Church with Rev. Carl H. Rehwaldt & Rev. Paul Dunbar officiating. Burial with military rites by Hastings Veterans Organizations will be in Concordia Cemetery, rural Juniata, Nebraska.

Paul Johann Friedrick Uden was born icon May 26, 1922 in Prosser, Nebraska to John F. & Ann (Augustin) Uden He was baptized on June 1, 1922 by Rev. William E.J. Landgruf at Christ Lutheran Church. He was confirmed and graduated from the 8th grade at Christ Lutheran School, rural Juniata, on May 17, 1936. In 1940, he graduated from Kenesaw High School, Kennesaw, Nebraska. He worked on a dairy & livestock farm, east of Grand Island, Nebraska for 2 years before being drafted into the United States Army on April 14, 1944. He trained at Camp Hood Texas and went over seas in November of 1944. He was at South Hampton, England for 1 month, then on December 24, 1944, her crossed the English Channel to Cherbourg, France where he served with the 66th Division Black Panthers in an Anti-Tank Company 262 Regiment. He was in combat from December 24, 1944 until V-E Day. He was then transferred to Quartermaster Truck Company. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal, the Combat Infantry Badge Medal, the European Theatre Ribbon and the Victory Ribbon. He was honorably discharged on June 6, 1946. On November 23, 1947, he married Wilma R. Dankert of Palmer, Nebraska, at Zion Lutheran Church, Worms, Nebraska. They farmed in rural Adams County for 40 years before moving to Hastings, Nebraska on July 4, 1986. He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, Juniata, Nebraska for 64 years before joining Faith Lutheran Church, Hastings, Nebraska, Concordia Cemetery Association, V.F.W, and PVA (Panther Veteran Organization).

Paul Johann Friedrick Uden was preceded in death by his parents, 1 son, Roy: 3 brothers, Arnold, Lewis and Robert: 2 sisters and 1 grandchild.

Ruth Bertha Lyngstad, 86, of 718 So. Bellevue, died Wednesday, March 12, 2003 at her home.

Services will be Saturday, March 15, 2003; 10:30 A.M. at Butler-Volland Chapel with Pastor Dan Heuer officiating. Burial will be in Blue Valley Cemetery, Ayr, Nebraska.

Ruth Bertha Lyngstad was born icon December 5, 1916 in Rush Lake Township, Minnesota to Albert W. & Bertha F. (Wandekow) Muller. On November 9, 1936, she married Marvin Lyngstad in Fergus Falls, Minnesota and he preceded her in death in May 1999. They moved to Hastings, Nebraska in 1951. She was a cook at various cafes and at Sunnyside Home, retiring in 1978. She also worked as a housekeeper at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church.

Ruth Bertha Lyngstad was preceded in death by her parents, husband Marvin 2 grandchildren, 1 sister and 2 brothers.

Herman Knudson, 93, of Perkins Pavilion, Good Samaritan Village, died Sunday, March 9, 2003 at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital.

Services will be Thursday, March 13, 2003; 2:00 P.M. at Butler-Volland Chapel with Rev. Jerry Bumgardner officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery, Hastings, Nebraska.

Herman Knudson was born icon December 3, 1909 in rural Clay County, Nebraska to Mads & Anna (Frandsen) Knudson. He attended school in Verona Township. On August 29, 1939, he married Dorothy Johnson of Fairfield. They farmed in Clay County, Nebraska, near Inland, Nebraska, before moving to Hastings after their retirement in 1978. Dorothy preceded him in death on June 2, 1983. On December 22, 1984, Herman married Vera Malcom of Cozad. They lived in Cozad and Kearney until Vera’s death on April 14, 1998. Herman then returned to Hastings. He was a member of the Berean Bible Church.

Herman Knudson was preceded in death by his parents; wives, Dorothy & Vera; a son, Harlan Knudson; a brother, Louis Knudson; and sisters, Carrie Jensen & Nellie Overturf.
