Helen L. Murray, 88, of Perkins Pavilion, died Saturday, March 8, 2003 at Perkins Pavilion.

Services will be Thursday, March 13, 2003; 10:00 A.M. at First Baptist Church, Hastings, Nebraska with Rev. Harland Minscer and Rev. Thomas Murray officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery, Hastings, Nebraska.

Helen L. Murray, daughter of Dewey & Mabel (Gibboney) Sypherd, was born icon November 12, 1914 in Munden, Kansas. She moved to Hastings, Nebraska in th 1920's. She graduated from Hastings High School in 1933. On September 28, 1940, she married Floyd B. Murray in North Platte, Nebraska and he preceded her in death on May 16, 2002. She was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church and Ruth Church Circle. She was a pink lady with over 2500 volunteered hours at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital.

Helen L. Murray was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Floyd and a brother, Dale Sypherd.

Survivors include,

Nancy E. Schmidt

Nancy E. Schmidt, 65, of 2407 W. 4th, died Friday, March 7, 2003 at Cumbernauld Village, Winfield, Kansas.

Services will be Thursday, March 13, 2003; 11:00 A.M. at Grace United Methodist Church with Pastor Jim Miller officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Garden, Hastings, Nebraska.

Nancy E. Schmidt was born icon May 20, 1937 in Harvard, Nebraska to Elwood & Eva (Helzer) Selko. She graduated Harvard High School, Harvard, Nebraska, Hastings College and Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital, School of Nursing, both in Hastings, Nebraska. On June 8, 1963, she married William F. Schmidt of Minden, Nebraska. She was an O.B. Instructor at the Nursing School for many years and was currently employed by Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital as a Registered Nurse. She had over 40 years of service at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital. She helped bring hundreds of new borns into this world. She was a very active member of Grace United Methodist Church for over 35 years. She was also a member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, the Nebraska Nurses Association, American Nurses Association, and various nursing organizations. She received the “Outstanding Achievement in Nursing” award by the Nebraska Nurses Association in 2002. She touched many lives in all the years of her nursing career. She jokingly said, “When some of the babies I helped deliver grew up and had babies of their own, and then they repeat this again; it’s probably time to retire.”

Nancy E. Schmidt was preceded in death by her parents.

Lynn C. Stewart

Lynn C. Stewart, 81, of 3406 Park Lane Dr., died Monday, March 3, 2003 at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital. Services will be Friday, March 7, 2003; 11:00 A.M. at First Presbyterian Church with Dr. James Cooke officiating. Burial with military rites will be in Parkview Cemetery, Hastings, Nebraska. Lynn C. Stewart was born icon November 15, 1921 in Palco, Kansas to Lewis & Mary (Brumbaugh) Stewart. He graduated from Portis High School, Portis, Kansas in 1939. He attended Fort Hayes Teachers College, Fort Hayes, Kansas and volunteered for the United States Air Corp in 1941, serving in England. He was discharged in 1943 and returned to Fort Hayes Teachers College and graduated in 1946. He began working for Kansas Nebraska Gas Company in Phillipsburg, Kansas in 1946. In 1947, he married Doris Blaylock and in 1953, he was transferred to Hastings, Nebraska. He retired in 1969. He then was owner/operator of Stewart Oil & Gas Leasing Company until his death. He was a member of the American Legion and V.F.W.
Lynn C. Stewart was preceded in death by his parents, son Ronald in 1999, 2 brothers (1 a young child in 1918) and 2 sisters .

Survivors include,

Son: Stephen Stewart - Castle Rock, CO

William Hugh 'Bill' Koepke

William Hugh 'Bill' Koepke, 75, of 719 S. Kansas, died Monday, March 3, 2003 at Perkins Pavilion. Services will be Friday, March 7, 2003; 2:00 P.M. at First St. Paul's Lutheran Church with Rev. Frank Kerkemeyer officiating. Burial with military rites will be in Parkview Cemetery, Hastings, Nebraska. William H. 'Bill' Koepke was born icon November 7, 1927 in Hastings, Nebraska to William Albert & Mabel Fern (Rieke) Koepke. He was baptized November 20, 1927 and confirmed on May 18, 1941 at Zion Lutheran Church, Hastings, Nebraska. He attended Zion Lutheran School through the 8th grade and graduated from Hastings High School in 1945. He served in the United States Army from March 1946 through September 1947. He married Rogene B. Garrelts at Zion Lutheran Church on May 20, 1951. He operated Koepke Auto Repair for 22 years. He later was a salesman for Friends Motor Supply for 21 years until his retirement. He was a member of First St. Paul's Lutheran Church, United Commercial Travelers and Order of Bagmen, National Rifle Association and V.F.W.

William H. 'Bill' Koepke was preceded in death by his parents and an infant daughter Janice Dorenne.

Calvin E. Freid

Former Hastings resident, Calvin E. Freid, 58, of Ruckersville, Virginia, died Monday, March 3, 2003 at his home. Services will be Saturday, March 8, 2003; 10:00 A.M. at Butler-Volland Chapel with Dr. Lee Wigert officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery, both in Hastings, Nebraska. Calvin E. Freid was born icon May 1, 1944 in Hastings, Nebraska to Everett & Dorene (Rasmussen) Freid. He graduated from Sutton High School, Sutton, Nebraska in 1962. He married Kay L. Gipe on August 16, 1964. They lived most of their married life in Lincoln, Nebraska where he was a CPA for Sprint. In 1983, he transferred to Virginia where he retired from Sprint. He later was a CPA for Charlottesville Albemare Airport, Charlottesville, Virginia.

Calvin E. Freid was preceded in death by his father, Everett and father-in-law, Robert Gipe.

LuluBelle Peterson, 83, of Perkins Pavilion, died Wednesday, April 30, 2003 at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital.

Services will be Saturday, May 3, 2003; 10:30 A.M. at Butler-Volland Chapel with Dr. Sam Rathod officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery, Hastings, Nebraska.

LuluBelle Peterson was born icon August 21, 1919 in Hastings, Nebraska to Lawrence & LuluBelle (Nelson) Douglas. She attended Hastings High School and on February 25, 1939, married Harlan Robert Peterson. He preceded her in death in 1997. She owned and operated a children’s day care and also had worked for Swift & Company for many years. She was a member of First United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School for 22 years. She was also a member of DAR-Daughters of the American Revolution, China Belles, served on the Adams County Historical Society Board of Directors and was a genealogist researcher. She was a poet and a lifelong resident of Hastings.

LuluBelle Peterson was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Harlan Robert Peterson and 18 siblings.

Lois G. ‘Trudy’ Barry, 88, of 8535 N. Marion Rd, Hastings, Nebraska died Wednesday, April 23, 2003 at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital.

Rosary and visitation service will be Friday, April 25, 2003; 7:00 P.M. at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, Doniphan, Nebraska. Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, April 26, 2003; 9:30 A.M. at St. Ann’s Catholic Church with Father Steve Major officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery, Hastings, Nebraska.

Lois G. Barry was born icon June 9, 1914 in Adams County, Nebraska to Joseph M. & Mary E. (Kernan) McKenna. She graduated from Hastings Senior High School in 1932 and attended Hastings College. On September 21, 1935, she married William M. ‘Bill’ Barry and he preceded her in death on July 24, 2001. She taught school, worked at the Naval Ammunition Depot, as a nurses aide at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital and at the Cornhusker Ammunition Plant in Grand Island. She was a member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church, Altar Society and Adams County Extension Club. She was a life long area resident.

Lois G. Barry was preceded in death by her parents, husband, William M. ‘Bill’ Barry Sr., infant daughter, Lillian, granddaughters, Paula Smits and Catherine Osterhaus, a great granddaughter, Amanda Smits, 2 brothers and 2 sisters.

Donna Kay Hartman was born icon April 22, 1941 in Hastings, Nebraska to Harold & Nettie (Koch) Meyer. She grew up on the family farm northwest of Blue Hill, Nebraska. She enjoyed farming along side her dad. She attended county grade school and graduated from Blue Hill High School in 1958. On April 17, 1960, she married Richard Hartman. To this union was born, one daughter, Lori Ann, two sons, Timothy Wayne and Daniel Dean. She was Clerk of Court at the Adams County court House for 22 years, retiring in July of 2002. She was a loving wife and mother and a friend to everyone she met. She enjoyed spending as much time as possible with her grandsons, who were the apple of her eye. She was a member of First St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Hastings, Nebraska.

Donna Kay Hartman was preceded in death by her father, daughter, Lori Ann, step father and one step sister.
