Hastings resident, Edna G. Schumm, 93, of the Villa at Good Samaritan Village, died Friday, August 22, 2003 at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital.
Services will be Tuesday, August 26, 2003; 2:00 P.M. at Butler-Volland Chapel with Rev. Frank Kerkemeyer officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery, Hastings, Nebraska.
Edna G. Schumm was born
September 4, 1909 in Kensington, Kansas to John and Myrtle (Morland) Kersey. On August 13, 1946 she married Anthony Schumm in Hastings, Nebraska and he preceded her in death in 1980. She was a Nurses Aide at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital and was a drape maker for J.M. McDonald Company in Hastings, Nebraska. Edna was a member of First St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Golden Age Eagle member and a past president of Eagle’s Auxiliary, all in Hastings, Nebraska.
Edna G. Schumm was preceded in death by her parents, husband Anthony, 1 son, 1 daughter, 2 brothers, 2 sisters and 2 grandchildren.

Former Hastings resident, Gordon R. ‘Gordy’ Smidt, 58, of Wenatchee, Washington, died Wednesday, August 20, 2003 at Central Washington Hospital, Wenatchee, Washington.
Services were held Sunday, August 24, 2003; 1:00 PM at Jones & Jones Colonial Chapel in Wenatchee, Washington. Graveside service and burial will be Friday, August 29, 2003; 1:30 P.M. at Parkview Cemetery, Hastings, Nebraska with Rev. Harold D. Stromer officiating.
Gordon R. ‘Gordy’ Smidt was born
January 13, 1945 in Hastings, Nebraska to John & Marie (Lindemann) Smidt. He had lived in Wenatchee for 28 years and had worked as an electrician for about 40 years.

James Lloyd Standley
James Lloyd Standley, 80, of 735 N. Cedar, died Monday, August 18, 2003 at his home.
Services will be Thursday, August 21, 2003; 2:00 P.M. at Butler-Volland Chapel with Rev. Ralph Ford officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery, Hastings, Nebraska.
James Lloyd Standley was born
January 30, 1923 in Fort Scott, Kansas to James Lloyd & Nancy Mae (Lambert) Standley. After graduation from the Fort Scott High School in 1941, he worked for a short time in St. Louis, Missouri as a government inspector of trucks being built for the Army. In 1942, he married Ruth Branstetter also of Fort Scott. Drafted into the Army, he assigned to the Army air force where he served until 1946 as Link Trainer instructor teaching pilots to fly by instruments. After his discharge from the service, he earned a B.S and M.S. from Kansas State College at Pittsburg, Kansas, taught at the Kinsley, Kansas High School for seven years, worked as an insurance salesman for State Farm Insurance and served, with Ruth, as house parents of the Twin Oaks Boys Home in Hutchinson, Kansas. In 1956, the family moved to Hastings where Jim was named head of the mathematics department and taught until 1988. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, National Mathematics Association, AAUP, and for 63 years, the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. While in Kinsley, Kansas, he was a member of the Kiwanis Club, serving two terms as president.

Rev. Harvey Arthur Herman, Sr., 87, of Perkins Pavilion, died Sunday, August 17, 2003 at Perkins Pavilion.
Services will be Thursday, August 21, 2003; 10:30 A.M. at North Shore Assembly of God Church with Rev. Bob Nazarenus & Rev. Tony Anderson officiating. Burial will be Thursday, August 21, 2003; 3:00 P.M. at Pleasant View Cemetery, near Milford, Nebraska.
Rev. Harvey Arthur Herman, Sr. was born
February 11, 1916 to Arthur & Nora (Skinner) Herrmann in Banner County Nebraska. On February 8, 1935, he married Eula Miller in Scottsbluff, Nebraska and she preceded him in death in 1985. They worked on a ranch in Banner County for three years before moving to Friend, Nebraska, where he farmed and had a Grade A dairy. In 1960, he entered full time ministry. He pastored churches in Crete, Red Cloud, Sidney, Cozad, and Gibbon, Nebraska. He was a visitation pastor at Christ’s Place in Lincoln, Nebraska. In 1986, he married Lillian (Cox) Rainforth. They lived in Friend, Nebraska until 1996 when they moved to Good Samaritan Village in Hastings, Nebraska. He was a member of North Shore Assembly of God Church.
Rev. Harvey Arthur Herman, Sr. was preceded in death by his parents, first wife, Eula (Miller) Herman, one son, Richard Herman, one grandson, Daniel, one great granddaughter, Ashli, two sisters and three brothers.

Betty Lou Haase, 67, of The Villa, 931 East ‘F’ St., died Saturday, August 16, 2003 at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital.

Betty Lou Haase was born
October 12, 1935 in Denver, Colorado to Norman & Esther (Lundquist) Engblom. She graduated from high school and attended Immanuel Lutheran College of Nursing in Omaha, Nebraska for 2 years. In October of 1960, she married Bob Haase in Denver, Colorado and was divorced in May of 1999. She moved from Denver, Colorado to Hastings, Nebraska in 1969. She was Director of Nursing at the State Hospital and worked for the Department of Corrections before retiring in 1999. She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church and a past member of American Nurses Association.
Betty Lou Haase was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and one sister.

Walter ‘Walt’ W. Morse, 84, of 1311 E 7th, died Wednesday, August 13, 2003, at Perkins Pavilion in Hastings, Nebraska.
There will be private family viewing and services.
Walter ‘Walt’ W. Morse was born
February 22, 1919 in Liberty, Kansas to Ralph and Grace (Coffey) Morse. He married Phyllis O. Gellinger on November 30, 1937 in Centralia, Kansas. She preceded him in death on March 14, 1998. He served in the Army during World War II from November 27, 1942 until January 2, 1946. In 1964, they moved from Lincoln, Nebraska to Hastings, Nebraska. He worked for the Nebraska Public Power District as a dispatcher from 1958 until 1978, when he retired.

Elsie Emma Schafer, 84, of 821 N. Lexington, died Thursday, August 7, 2003 at Hastings, Nebraska.
Services will be Monday, August 11, 2003; 10:00 A.M. at Faith Lutheran Church with Rev. Carl H. Rehwaldt & Rev. Paul Dunbar officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery, Hastings, Nebraska.
Elsie Emma Schafer was born
September 4, 1918 in Hastings, Nebraska to William P. & Emma R. (Erdman) Dier. She graduated from Hastings High School. She was a private secretary for the president of City National Bank for 25 years, retiring in 1963. She married Conrad ‘Coonie’ Schafer on November 30, 1963 and he preceded her in death on July 28, 1972. She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church and Beta Sigma Phi Beta Master Sorority.
Elsie Emma Schafer was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Conrad, brother, Edward L. Dier, Sr. And a sister, Martha Wiese.

Mass of Christian burial will be Wednesday, August 6, 2003 ; 10:30 A.M. at St Mary’s Catholic Church, Alexandria, Nebraska with Father Doug Dietrich officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Alexandria, Nebraska.
Victoria Agnes Cramer was born
November 11, 1925 in Shickley, Nebraska to Anton and Louisa (Morris) Dondlinger. On April 7, 1947, she married Vernon Dale Cramer at St. Mary’s Church in Alexandria, Nebraska. They later divorced. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church. She also worked at the OK, Thiel’s and Treasure Island Cafes.
Victoria Agnes Cramer was preceded in death by her parents, a son, Ronald Cramer, two brothers, and two sisters.

Harvey Munsterman was born
July 13, 1920 in Lincolnville, Kansas to William & Minnie (Meyn) Munsterman. He graduated from Lincolnville High School and farmed in Kansas, Iowa and Nebraska. He moved to Doniphan, Nebraska in 1976. He was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and Lutheran Laymen’s League.
